[videoblogging] Who wants to Hit the Road?

2010-02-28 Thread FluxRostrum
This is some what off topic UNLESS there is an aspiring Mobile Broadcast News
producer out there that needs a vehicle... then it's on topic. ~)

A non internet inclined friend of mine is selling his short bus
It is not a veggie bus (YET)

Giant roof storage
(used to store an entire industrial sized mobile kitchen - which is also for
sale)

DIESEL, new hoses belts
CHEAP
he told me how much but I think its worth so much more that I'm reluctant to
say.

I don't know the make an model
give him a call if interested
FLOWER 336-267-4394

The bus is mechanically sound- no leaks, runs like a champ. It's an automatic
with power steering and power brakes.

It has a stove, fridge, closet, desk, and double bed.

The only quirk is that the parking brake is missing, and the wheel has to be
chocked everywhere you go.

This bus has made several uneventful trips cross country and is currently
residing in North Carolina.

this sounds like a Net Neutrality End Around to me.

http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/10/youtube-bandwidth/
Now if you are Google, you might even begin asking Comcast to pay up to
connect its Google Tubes straight to their local cable ISP networks. That way,
YouTube videos and Google search results would show up faster, letting the ISP
brag that YouTube doesn’t stutter on their network, a potential commercial
advantage over its DSL competitors.
“Who pays whom is changing,” Labovitz said. “All sorts of negotiations are
happening behind closed doors.”
Unfortunately, few will know the outcomes of those talks, since most of the
net’s architecture, let alone the financial machinations behind them, remain a
secret cloaked in nondisclosure agreements.

This post has been making the rounds. Yourube actually doesnt pay much in
bandwidth costs because google owns much of its own fiber network.
http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/10/youtube-bandwidth/

Google is now responsible for at least 6 percent of the internet’s traffic,
and likely more — and may not be paying an ISP at all to serve up all that
 content and attached ads.

Credit Suisse made headlines this summer when it estimated that YouTube was
binging on bandwidth, losing Google a half a billion dollars in 2009 as it
streams 75 billion videos. But a new report from Arbor Networks suggests
that Google’s traffic is approaching 10 percent of the net’s traffic, and
that it’s got so much fiber optic cable, it is simply trading traffic, with
no payment involved, with the net’s largest ISPs.

You might want to be as skeptical of the mainstream as you are of independents.

MAINSTREAM is controlled by the major corporations of the world and they give

2008-11-30 Thread ~ FluxRostrum
I too have seen a much greater response in ads served on my YouTube account
than on Blip.
(UNFORTUNATELY) my YouTube Channel gets a lot more views than my website. It's
a numbers game.

Also, Google Adsense ads are extremely NonJudgemental of your content. They're
just matching keywords and such. So, once you get past the GATEKEEPERS that say
who gets to share ad revenue and who doesn't... the thought of advertisers not
wanting to advertise on your content for whatever reason doesn't make sense to
me. If you feel this is your case than maybe you should look at how you are
Naming your posts and the descriptions and keywords you are associating with
them.

Of course if you're talking about a sponsorship deal, well, that's totally
judgmental.

And, no, I don't think you need millions of views per video to generate a
supplemental revenue stream... unless you need to hire some French Maids. '~)

Blip.TV provides a great high quality free service and so does YouTube
for that matter. They are FREE!

As far as advertising revenue goes it's the chicken vs the egg. Sites
need great content that advertisers want to advertise around.

I get millions of views of French Maid TV but many advertisers don't
want their brands associated with French Maids. I get that.

I also don't publish on a regular bases. Advertisers want consistently
delivered, safe, emotionally engaging content. I get that too.

It's has been and it is going to continue to be very hard to make
money in video advertising unless you deliver fresh, stimulating
content on a regular basis that gets millions of views a day.

It would be great if I could just create content, post it and get paid
while still retaining ownership of my content but that world doesn't
exist yet.

YouTube or Blip.TV can't help you unless you have something that gets
millions of views that they can sell to an advertiser.

Now selling sponsorships yourself is a whole different story.

[videoblogging] videographers arrested at RNC in St Paul--help needed

2008-09-03 Thread ~ FluxRostrum
Howdy all,

In addition to the incidents described below by Randy there have been 2 AP
photographers, a NY Post photographer and 3 Democracy Now videographers
arrested. Also, my veggie Media bus is under severe harassement in a legal
parking spot. Cops attempted to break into the bus today with a crow bar and
were scared off by NLG lawyers and a couple of cameras.

Randy Rowland, from PepperSpray Productions, here. Instead of
sending you an announcement about a screening, this email is
unusual for us, it is a call for help.

Two PepperSpray collective members, Lambert Rochfort and Joe LaSac,
on assignment in St Paul covering the protests associated with
the Republican National Convention, were both arrested on Sunday
while covering the story. Both are still being held without
charges or an opportunity to go before a judge.

Lambert was swept up in a mass arrest of peaceful citizens who were
surrounded by cops and all arrested. Joe was arrested about the
same time as Amy Goodman and two other journalists from Democracy
Now! were arrested. In fact if you watch the footage of Amy
Goodman standing in handcuffs, the fellow sitting on the ground at
her feet is Joe.

Lambert and Joe had covered the DNC in Denver, and were in St Paul
to cover the protests. They both had their cameras with them when
arrested and were clearly doing nothing illegal, just trying to get
the story that corporate media tends to overlook. There have been
several other attacks on journalists there, including a raid on
an indymedia hospitality center, and a raid on the house of a
group that documents police brutality. It goes without saying that
there is no freedom of the press if reporters are jailed for
covering the story.

We want our people released without charges, and we want our
equipment back. If you value indymedia and the role of independent
journalists--and I know you do, or you wouldn't be on our
announcement list--then please take some or all of the following
actions to secure the timely release of these PepperSpray
videographers.

If you are in the St Paul area or can ask those you know who are in
that area, please join the 24 hour vigil at the Ramsey County
Jail, 425 Grove St., St Paul (24 hour vigil)

Please call some or all of the following numbers, demanding that
our reporters be freed:

Chris Coleman, St. Paul Mayor: 651.266.8510
or Chris Rider from Mayor Coleman's office at 651-266-8535
Ramsey County Jail at 651-266-9350 (press extension 0)
Ramsey County Sheriff: 651.487.5149

Here are the names and numbers of St Paul City Council people to
call as well:
Melvin Carter - Ward 1 - 651- 266-8610
Dan Thune - Ward 2 - 651-266-8620
Pat Harris - Ward 3 - 651-266-8630

PepperSpray Productions is an all-volunteer independent media
collective based in Seattle, WA. Among other things, we produce a
weekly access TV show called Indymedia Presents which airs on 20
channels, from Seattle to New York, including in St. Paul and
Minneapolis.

if you really don't want to get emails from us, reply to this email

Typically we only use this list to announce occasional screenings

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if any of you out there have experienced any problems
recently with uploading your videos onto Blip? Last week, I was
unable to upload my video after multiple attempts over a couple of
days using both Firefox and Internet Explorer.

When I contacted Blip they accused my year old Dell XPS M140 for the
problems although offering no REAL concrete answers or solutions to
why this happen and how to avoid it in the future.

I've been uploading my videos to Blip since Feb 2007 and I've never
been able to use Firefox for any of my uploads, and some of my uploads
have taken as long as 6 hours. Is this normal using Blip?

I cannot continue to have these problems and have Blip point the
finger at me and my computer. Does anyone have any insight or answers
to these questions?

Thanks!

Howdy all,

Actually there was alot of video blogs prior to 2004.

However, the most common term for them was that'll take too long NOT NEARLY
as catchy as a video blog.

The most common term for those attempting this feat back then was whataya
nuts... not nearly as effective a term as Vlogger to use when trying to get
an interview.

Also, I think the distinction of whether you use blogging software to produce
what is essentially a blog is a little nit picky.

I was just thinking that you might want to take the first step in

Hey Steve, interesting interview. I was unaware that you
started in
public access.
Yeah, I did that for a long time...
In the interview, why did you say there werent any videoblogs
in 2004?
Did you mean as of January 1st, 2004 that there werent any
videoblogs?
Did you mean sites that only had video as their content in 2004?
What I meant was that on January 1, 2004 I decided to figure out how
to put video on a blog and did it. I was unaware of anyone
 else having ever tried to
do it. I'd never seen video on a blog. Adrian Miles was
 experimenting in 2003 and you'll
  see his entry on Wikipedia.
If you look at the Vlogumentary Wiki, there seemed to be some
people
making vlogs in 2004. http://vlogumentary.pbwiki.com/2004. You
also
said those of us that already had videoblogs in 2004 only
tried it and
didnt continue on. Were you just referring to members of the Yahoo
Videoblogging list as the only ones that continued on?
I was just talking about January 1, 2004 and earlier. Lots of people
started videoblogs after that date and continue posting video to blogs.
You also said in the interview that Final Cut and the MacBook
Pro came
out in 2004? Before you started your site? By the way, I
believe the
Canon GL2 came out in 2002.
What I'm referring to was the fact that I personally was able to get
FCP, a Mac laptop and GL/2 prior to 1/1/04, and have the
 technology in house and available
to produce video on a blog.
Lastly. You said, in the interview, that you coined the term
videoblog. This site, http://poddev.comitar.com/2006/08/
says you
called it a video podcast. On your site, you called it a video
podcast as well.

http://stevegarfield.blogs.com/videopodcast/2004/11/videopodcast_20.html
I dont mean to be picky. I'm just wondering about some of your
talking
points in that interview.
I started that videopodcast blog to experiment in including video in
RSS 2.0 with media enclosures for distribution. So that was
 in addition to the regular
  video blog I had.
A videoblog is video on a blog and a video podcast is video
delivered over RSS 2.0 with media enclosures.
Thanks for asking the questions. I hope I answered them for you.

Out of respect for people's time and resources I think you should be accepting
digital files from digital artists for the purpose of your consideration. I
can understand your need for the highest quality format possible for Theatrical
Distribution. However, most experienced vloggers can easily compress a file
that looks nice on a large screen TV or small screen theatre.

You're stance is basically shifting more work on to hopefuls by forcing them
to invest more of their time and money on a chance of being included. You will
have a lot more material to work with if you make the highest quality
possible requirement of only those you wish to actually use.

We use links files in these here parts. ;)

  Please see the details at:

Submission deadline is September 20th. This may be right around the
corner, but this increases the odds of inclusion in the favor of
vloggers as you have the most immediate means of creating videos.

I really encouarge you to accept links and digital files:
All submissions must be on DVD/CD (burned as an .mov or .avi data
file), or on mini DV.

Why not just let people upload DV files to you?
this is the future of TV.

1. The driver should not be the camera person. ;-)

2. Pre-plan everything in case the milk of human kindness does not
bring up logging for the night. Unless you've got the RV.

3. I'm thinking if you are going to post 365 days you are gonna want
to know every free wi-fi, Internet cafe and library on you trip around
the country. Kinko's will kill your budget if you don't know where the
free Internet resources are in a community.

4. Get to know your camcorder really well.

5. Have more than one. Maybe a good DV camcorder for the long
interviews and something like the http://tinyurl.com/3xjxe6 camcorder
for taking around town showing videos of the outdoors sights without
drawing attention to the camcorder. It's good for daylight stuff and
you can plug it into your laptop easy.

I have to put myself to bed but I'll stew on it. I'm sure others will
pipe in as well.

Howdy,

I was just invited to check out stumble upon video.
I don't think I like it, for us.

If you're uploading to YouTube or Google .. GooTube
Your videos show up in the stumble upon interface with no link back to you.

On Google Video you can place a link to your site along with the video.
As a director on YouTube you get a link back to you on each video
Scratch that.. now I'm pissed... On YouTube as a director you USED TO GET A
LINK BACK TO YOUR SITE.. the provided by link on my videos have all been
replaced by a link to my f'n U2B Channel instead of my site I tried to edit
the link and found no form for changing the URL... heads up

SOooo.. Stumble Upon... No Ads (YET), no link back, decent interface.
does this suck? or what?

[videoblogging] Re: YouTube Video Thieves: How Many Are There?

2007-02-12 Thread ~ FluxRostrum
I had someone Steal most of one of mine on U2B a while back. I aggree with
most of your reasoning Randy. Eye ball factor, not relying on the man to fix
the problem.. I simpley gave it 5 stars and posted in his coments. thanks
for the credit. When he responded.. then I got angry. He got pissy with me,
asked me who I'd stolen the video from and why I thought I should be getting
credit for that...

So I told him. that I had paid for the travel, shot ALL the footage, edited the
video and had posted it with CREDITS on my website a week after the event (2
years ago.. ya know.. before YouTube). I don't think I told him these things
very nicely... he didn't even pay any attention to the credits, NONE. At least
he had't put his own URL on it... THAT ... uhh... THAT's reaaly not right.

We eventually became ... ok... he added a provided by and said that he was
just not use to seeing highly produced videos posted by the person who actually
made them on YouTube.. and he had a point.

I reinforced your Community Justice on AskTony. It really is descpicable.

I absolutely understand your point. Obviously, AskTony has behaved
 in a disgraceful manner.

The fact that you and virtually everyone will probably feel the same
way about AskTony is a very exquisite form of justice. He's been
caught with his pants down and/or with his hand in the cookie jar
and exposed as the sleazy operator that he is. This is a far greater
punishment than simply forcing him to quietly remove my video--even
though it is the second most popular of all his fourteen videos.

And frankly, these events forced me into confronting the different,
competing (and sometimes 'conflicting') reasons I have such a passion
for making these videos. Yes, we all want/deserve credit for those
marvelous moments we manage to catch on tape. But I also dream of
having the entire world watching my work. I believe video has real
 power impacting people's lifel

Looking at the big picture here. I see how it has evolved into a
 symbiotic, even mutually-beneficial adversarial relationship.
Because he stole ('copied' is a better term since I didn't really
lose the rights to my own use of this video) I learned the
importance of effective tagging which enabled me to lift my hits from
5,000 to 19,000 in three months. His use of a copy of my video
caused 72,000 people to see it who might never have seen it.

That response was re-inforced by one commentator who though age-
differences were what caused his greater success getting
subscribers. However, that person volunteered that he has actually
subscribed to both our feeds,,,symbiosis in action :-).

Because he's a clever young promoter, I can't help but think that
among his 72,000 viewers there were some young gay teenagers, some of
whom didn't know there were safe spaces a community of people like
themselves where they could be openly gay and have a life for
themselves. In Iraq, death squads hunt down anyone believed or know
to be gay and kills them. Catching a glimpse of freedom in the USA
 gives them hope.

Studies show that 50% of more of teenage suicides in the USA are
young people unable to adjust to parental rejection and/or religious
indoctrination. If AskTony's use of my video helped even one such
person, it gave it an unexpected redemptive aspect.

I have an HD camera and have several projects in the works which i
hope to turn into documentaries. I don't post most of my better
material on YouTube, just stuff I feel is PSA or that I don''t have
necessary releases for anyway. I love the wild West aspect of
vlogging and the absence of gatekeepers. I'm hate to call in the
authorities on anyone except as a last resort.

In this video, I held on to what I perceived as the moral high
ground. By going out of my way to be gracious and foregiving, I
only increased the scorn most viewers will heap on AskTony. In the
end, I see this as teaching a nineteen-year-old discipline while
increasing my own exposure and knowledge.

What I really am dying to know are the details as to how this
expose impacts KissTony's relationship with viewers and if it
alters his behavior. It's not going to turn a sinner into a saint
but it might have enough social fallout to make him behave more
cautiously ethically in the future. Kids learn that touching a hot
stove burns and hurtsl Then they stop doing it.

I think meeting AskTony and having a chat about this would be
fascinating at some point in the future. In one of the subtitles I
raised the possibility that I might be doing him a great favor

Make sure you have open source and/or paper trail voting procedures or you will
probably get Le Pen.
Bush has still not won an election. Both elections were stolen. The abundance
of evidence is mind blowing.
http://www.fluxview.com/Vote-Fraud.htm

Josh is paying the price of decades of good people allowing the government
they trusted to represent them to do whatever it wanted.

The medium that we all work in has the power to change the problems that face
US... this is the reason for the chip on my shoulder against vloggers who ..
are too narcissistic in their approach. We have a powerful tool that, for the
time being, is in the hands of the people of the world and not the
governments or corporations although both have begun their process of
assemilating our tool... coopting it.. to silence us and reinforce their
brand: CAPITALISM.

There are alot of important storys out there just dieing to be told, maybe your
the person that story has been waiting for?

The online video landscpe has been changing extremely fast. When I uploaded my
1st independent online video show in 1999.. 1 9 9 9 .. it took DAYS to
upload, you could hardly see it it was so tiny and cost hundreds of dollars in
hosting even though I had hardly any traffic.. eventually the cost came down
and more people began to produce their own content; the vlogisphere was a
zygote... RSS feeds ... BlipTV ... Veoh.. this list ..Everything that came
along for the next few years seemed to be setting the stage for destroying
force fed commercial television (my main goal) .. then came the You Tube.
Which I believe has both Destroyed Television AND Ruined EVERYTHING. Now it
takes no talent, no money and hardly any special eqipment to crap out a video
every 10 minutes if you wanted (and some do)... I think it's important to put
this power in the hands of EVERYONE but I think we need to find a way to
encourage EVERYONE to use their power responsibly. So, if you are hell bent on
living your life infront of (or behind) a camera then .. atleast go outside and
do it, you'll eventually bump into something interesting.

Before Prison I corresponded with Josh, we have done similar work with our
video and have faced similar issues regsrding ourt work. I have been unlawfully
beaten, pepper sprayed, arrested and now MUGGED by police from multiple cities
of our great land and currently I'm under a threat of arrest by the NYPD ..
this is not the way I would prefer to spend my time.. I told Josh before he
went in that I was proud of him but didn't think I would be strong enough to
face prison for a princple when principles have become so devalued in our
society... I'm sure it would be easy to feel forgotten in there, like your
sacrifice was for nothing.. (hell, I feel that way much of the time on the
outside)... So, if you have a stable return address to offer and don't mind
Prison Guards reading your mail I'm sure Josh would love to hear from you.
BUT, I think he would be more inspired by seeing how much the vlogisphere
changed for the better because of his commitment and watching some informative,
quality video from reformed narcissaholics when he gets out.

Josh went to prison pre GooTube, pre RSS aggregator leach pandemic, pre 30
YouTube clones, pre vlogger goes Hollywood stories ... he'll be like a digital
caveman in strange an wonderous world when he gets out.

When he sits down at his (now outdated) computer alone for the 1st time ... ya
think he'll cry?

Hi, all.

I know I promoted a post here two weeks ago when I made a little New
Year's video card, but you'll forgive me for doing it again so soon.

I felt moved this year to make something for Martin Luther King Jr.
(MLK) Day. My workplace declared it a company holiday, and with some
free time on my hands and not really having any plans to attend any MLK
memorial functions, I decided I wanted to keep the day in my heart a
different way this year, and the more I thought about it, the better the
idea of making a vlog post about it was.

If MLK day is special to you like it is to me, please hop over to
http://www.weatherlight.com/freetime to see my video. Also, I'd love to
see any other MLK-related video posts anyone else makes, so please share
them in this thread.

Thanks, guys.

Edwards announcemnet from the 9th ward New orleans is rather infuriating, but
not surprising. What relationship did he have to that area prior to USING it
as photo op? Has he done anything to help the people of the area? other than
lipservice? I don't know maybe he has; but I have not seen or heard or any
REAL aid coming outa his corner.

Also, in his last bid for the nomination he had people who were passing out
copies of his voting record on drug war issues ARRESTED outside of one speaking
engagemnet.

So to me he seems like a slick smiling 2 faced... politician. not suited for
public office, but a great candidate.

2006-12-17 Thread ~ FluxRostrum

You were darned deep in the fray, dude.

Talk about that, will you?

Curious how you felt about your physical position.

Jan

I am somewhat accostumed to being deep in the fray, but it wasn't so deep when
I entered.

It got a little tense and I wanted to leave.

I was waiting my turn to exit when things got tight... was about to head for
the exit again when I saw the cop extend his baton at the cuffed person.. so I
felt obligated to stay but that's when they asked me to leave, I said I was
press, they said I needed to leave anyway, I agreed and started out the hole.

I've noticed an oddity in the way many people have reposted this. Most just
put a headline and a link, including people I have had a great deal of on-line
real life contact with... nobody seems to want to say anything about it. ...
seems odd that people who have asked me to give video activism workshops at
national convergences would remain so silent.

I inquired many people about whether or not I should make this video and
everyone said it was important to not let them get away with their
smashing/stealing camera activites this time, since there was so much evidence
of their actions. This is not an isolated incident. It's a violation of
rights of Journalists. It is a violation of rights any citizen with a camera..
journalist or not.

I can vouch for this (unfortunately).

I suppose the most effective methods call the least attention to
 themselves,
as they're the least likely to result in illegally seized footage. Anybody
know of a good resource/guide for filming police or protests?

[videoblogging] I was Attacked by NYPD ~ Wanna Watch?

2006-12-12 Thread ~ FluxRostrum
The War on Journalism

http://fluxrostrum.blogspot.com/2006/11/war-on-journalism.html

description from I-Witness Video
http://iwitnessvideo.info

On October 30, 2006 at a demonstration protesting the murder of journalist Brad
Will in Mexico, members of the NYPD assaulted an independent videographer and
stole his videocamera.

That's right, stole. The filmmaker, FluxRostrum, was not arrested. He did not
receive a receipt for seized property. He was not even directly asked for his
camera. Instead, without any warning, he was jumped by two police officers, one
of whom is an NYPD captain, and knocked down onto the asphalt of 39th Street.
One police officer was succcesful in wrenching the camera out of Flux's hands.
As Flux crawled around on the ground looking for the eyeglasses which had been
knocked off his face during the attack, the cop with the camera quickly
conferred with another officer. Then he ran off to hide the camera.

When Flux attempted to get his camera back after the demonstration, he was
threatened with arrest by a Lieutenant at the 17th Precinct. His lawyer was
told that camera was found abandoned at the scene and that it had been turned
over to the Manhattan District Attorney's office to be used as evidence against
people arrested at the Mexican Consulate demonstration that day.

Someone at the 17th Precinct told the D.A. that the camera was found
abandoned on the sidewalk. Now the D.A. is insisting on keeping a copy of the
stolen videotape to use as evidence.

Is this the new normal? Is it legal just because the police say so?

If police do not have their own videocameras at events will they simply bonk
one of us over the head and steal our gear and videotapes? What if they decide
that they do not like what the videotape shows? Will they then destroy it as
has happened to so many cameras seized by the NYPD over the past couple of
years?

This story is a little hard to believe, isn't it? Fortunately, you do not have
to take my word for it. Not to be denied his voice, Flux made a videotape about
his experience at the hands of NYPD.

This is the first blog installment in an ongoing I-Witness Video investigation,
The War on Cameras.

[videoblogging] N.O. Rights Now Availabkle for Rental

2006-03-24 Thread ~ FluxRostrum

howdy,

There's a new video rental service called Liberation Video; they are using the
NetFlix model to rent truth media. They requested a dvd collection of mine
title N.O. Rights which holds 4 pieces on housing other rights
issues in Post
Katrina New Orleans.

It is now availbale for rental along with many of the most important
documentaries of the Post 911 era.
http://www.liberationvideo.com/details.html?DVDSKU=146

I'm getting paid a little; based on demmand. The more copies they need to
fullfill requests the more I get. If I said how much per copy
you'd laugh; but
it's .. something. This rental service idea represents an additional means of
distribution that could make it easier for marginally interested people to
access the truth so I'm happy just to be included at this point.

PS. if you have not yet seen the Iraq War 3rd Anniversary Special I highly
reccommend it.
