Re: [videoblogging] Re: DV to iPod (320x240) dilemna
I've tried this one a number of times, but it just does not compare in sharpness, and size to the auto export to iPod (320x240). But this may all be mute, if in fact that 7.0.4 does not do a multi-pass. I have not tried it yet, but I have a sneaky feeling that the quality will drop with the single pass. Which means getting back to 7.0.3 somehow. Thanks Steve, you always come through... Chris ps I have yet to try iSquint, or Divx for that matter. Export to mpeg4 Video type: H264 bitrate: about 700kbits/sec frame rate same as source Key frame: dunno, experiment press 'video options' button: Untick Main, tick Baseline Choose Best quality or Faster Encode (see below)* Audio: AAC-LC (Music) 128 kbps rest of audio settings probably dont matter much *Apple made some ipod export changes with qt7.0.4 compared to 7.0.3. Based on encoding times, I believe QT7.0.3 ipod export used multi-pass mode (so better quality) but Apple were getting stick for how slow the export was, so in QT7.0.4 theyve changed it to Single-Pass to stop encoding times being too depressing. Take your pick. Hoe that helps a little, if you are on a Mac then consider trying alternative encoders like iSquint to see if you prefer the quality, if you are on Windows there are other options too. Steve of Elbows --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, civanyi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Question: Had anyone had any luck replicating the sharpness, and file size of the export to iPod 320x240 function, but by doing it manually? I have found the quality, and file size of export to iPod (320x240) to be very appealing, with one exception, the stretch factor. Why does Apple not take into consideration the rectangular pixels of the 720x480 format, and make them square to a true 320x240 size, not 320x213? Because every time I have tried a manual compression from DV to 320x240, the image is just not as sharp, and the file sizes are larger than the standard export to iPod 320-x240. And I have tried a variety of compressions. I have tried making a self-contained 720x480 DV NTSC movie into a 640x480 DV NTSC movie. Then, I have done a variety of manual compressions, m4v, mp4, mov, with Video, or Sorenson 3, or MPEG$ settings. (The h.264 is definitely the best in quality and size). But again, none of the manual compression schemes come up to the quality of the automatic export to iPod (320x240) I have also tried going directly to 320 x 240 DV NTSC from 720x480, and worked a variety of manual compressions, but to no avail. I am curious to know if others have had similar experiences. Chris Yahoo! Groups Links Yahoo! Re: [videoblogging] Re: iPod test
Hey Steve: Thanks so much for all of your great information. The movie that I asked about was another re-encoded movie I made following Michael's suggestion, and yours too. I exported it as an .mp4, utilizing H.264 codec, and AAC -- set to Baseline. So I am perplexed as to why it's not playing on the iPod. I downloaded it from the URL where I loaded it, into iTunes and played it back in iTunes, no problem both on a PC and a Mac. So it's really wierd. I will have to try again, and maybe fork out the bucks to get my own iPod. Again, thanks so much!!! PS. When you earlier mentioned being able to see my movie on your iPod that was a different file. That one was using the movie to iPod (320x240). You simply changed the extension to .mp4, And it played on your iPod right? If so maybe I'll continue to use that automatic approach. ciao On 11/29/05, Steve Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: No I could not get that one to work, it wouldnt copy to the ipod. Icannot analyse the file to work out why, perhaps it is not baseline, but I have no software that can tell me whether it is baseline or mainprofile. Also in an email to me recently, you asked this:Hey Steve:What you are saying to me is that yousimply changed the extension from .mov to .mp4 and it worked on the iPod?Because I made a DVNTSC 640x480movie from the original DV movie.I then exported itMovie to iPod (320x240), and changed the extensionfrom .m4v to .mov. I did not do the export to .mp4, selecting the baseline thing that Michael described. So I'm confused.Im sorry all this stuff is confusing, I will try to make sense but Imay fail ;)When you use the 'movie to ipod' option in quicktime, it creates a mp4 file that is the right sort of h264 mpeg4 to work on the ipod. ButApple decided that rather than call it a .mp4, they will use .m4vinstead, which is confusing. So some people prefer to rename the fileback to .mp4, and it will still work. If you do a manual export to .mp4, selecting baseline, it is creatingthe same kind of file, it just doesnt automatically resize the footagelike the 'movie to ipod' export does, and it does not use the silly extension .m4vYou cannot rename files created with either of the above methods to.mov because they are not .movs.You cannot make ipod compatible h264 .mov's by just using the normal'export to quicktime' option and selecting h264 as the video codec, because this does not create baseline stuff, and so is not ipodcompatible. If you want to create a .mov that works on the ipod, you have 2options. You may avoid h264 altogether and use the older kind of mpeg4 (or 3ivx), many peopl edo this as it ensures that the video clips willplay back on computers that dont have quicktime 7.If you want a .mov that is h264 and is ipod compatible, you have toexport to a .mp4 file of the right sort (baseline) and then reload that mp4 into quicktime, and save it as a self-contained movie.Well I hope that maes some sense, Im a bit tired at the moment so Imay have made a mistake somewhere.Steve of Elbows--- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, civanyi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Could someone please, please load this file onto there lovely, little, teeney, tiney tv gadget iPod thingy? Because I did not do the export to .mp4, selecting the baseline thing that Michael described. Rather, I made a DVNTSC 640x480 movie from the original DV movie. I then exported it Movie to iPod (320x240), and simply changed the extension from .m4v to .mov. It should have that main profile. But since you say it plays on your iPod, I'll go ahead and change the extension to .mp4 and upload the video to the server again. Thanks for you help. I opened it up in QT Pro, and exported as a MOVIE to iPOD (320x240). I ended up with the .m4v. But I changed the extension from .m4v to .mov. -- simply changing the number 4 to the letter 0, kind of a longwinded approach but I am curios if it will play on the iPod? Could you or anyone please check this .mov to see it it plays on the iPod? http://55broad.video.blip.tv/Civanyi-MissingPlacesH264iPodVersion908.mov chris @ www.cafesiena.blogspot.com I tried to get it to load in quicktime 7, but quicktime said it wasn't an understood format. I can't get it to go into iTunes as .mov, it will come in as .m4v. There may be something in the file header that specifies it to be m4v. -- Enric Yahoo! Groups Links Yahoo! Re: [videoblogging] Re: top feedburner vlogs.. steve garfield gets bumped by the boob
the beauty ofvideoblogging is that it doesnt HAVE to matter - Steve said I agree that it doesn't HAVE to matter, but, speaking personally, I feel that great pangs when my qualitative audience diminishes, and exhiliration whenitincreases. I have in the past easily been able to ignore the numbers. But honestly, I could never ever put up a video, if I knew no onewould watch it-- that would be an excercise in futility? And I truly believe that almost everyone would want to have as large an audience as possible,I know I would. And yes, I've been thinking ofdifferent ways on how to achieve that, and trying to figure out the success of other folks out there-- the proverbial grass is always greener on the other side. And for my two cents, it's not about:To Be Themed, or Not To Be Themed, it's about having compelling characters, coupled with compelling stories, period. SPONSORED LINKS Individual Fireant Use YAHOO! Re: [videoblogging] Re: new URLs @ ourmedia Not Working either
Oops. Correction: When you go to Ourmedia, sign in, your page (left sidebar), then Track, you have to open the movie to another page -- which will offer URL. Click on that, or just rt click to copy the URL address to your clipboard. This should work... Re: [videoblogging] FCP help
You could import the MP3 into QT and export them as a WAV or AIF 48khz -- no compression -- should be okay to import them into FCPro at that point. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Mac Switch Question!
I thought I weigh in too, Ryan, I personally use the compression setting suggested by http://freevlog.org/#compress -- you can adjust the frame size, and even frame rate to your needs. I have gone with 12 fps, and it works fine. Before these tutorial guidelines came along I would compress with the older Video, or Sorenson 3 codecs -- they work fine too. Nice thing is one can experiment with a variety of settings and compare them side by side. I've not tried the H.264 codec tho'. By the way, when you get the video camera hooked up to iMovie -- you are going to be in heaven! I love my mac too, but I may have to get a new one soon. I didn't say, but I vlogged! www.lightfantastic.org/imr/extras/videoblog/archives/2005/07/back_in_mac.htm l For very good quality and pretty big file sizes use the Compress movie for CD-ROM. This gets saved as a generic .MOV file. This is helpful. Like I said, I compress the hell out of my movies for the web (and my friends with slower connections), going Sorensen 3 at Low, scaling down to 240x180, 64 bits for audio, etc. I was just looking for how to get MOV files that were closest to the original MOV files that my camera made natively -- 320x240, 30fps, etc. I'll try the CD-ROM setting. This is probably too big for the web in my case, but good for archiving to CD (or now, DVD -- yay!). Question: Should I be using Sorensen 3? Or is MPEG-4 better for cross-platform availability (though wrapping it in a MOV file kind of kills that)? Or H.263? So many choices... the blessings and bane of videoblogging. H.264 video's look great if the original video is excellent quality and you dont mind the time it takes to export (forever on a G3 iMac 500Mhz!!!). And if you don't mind people not being able to see them (but they can hear them just fine!). I'm sure H.264 will rule the world, someday, but I'm not ready for it. It's too much codec for an amateur like me! PS. iMovie doesnt do Text very clearly so if you are gonna use text in a movie you should import as a picture from Photoshop or something like that. That's what I've been doing. QuickTime's text tracks are quite powerful for meta uses (I.e. captioning), but for just plain looking good, they leave a lot to be desired. My problem is, I have Photoshop for the PC but not the Mac. So I might have to start using iMovie's title features until I figure out Adobe's cross upgrade thing (if it even exists anymore). Michael Verdi wrote: Check out our tutorial on Freevlog. http://freevlog.org/#compress Select the Compress from iMovie video. I did! It advocated H.264 or MPEG-4, going down to 15fps and 600bits. I was trying to replicate my source MOV file settings, though. And here's something weird -- I did videos out of iMovie at 15fps and 30fps and found little different in the final file size... so my vlog entries are now 30fps, but still scaled down to 240x180. I love my Mac. My wife wants a Mini now. And I think she's going to get one.
