Can you stay a little extra time there and book any other work or vacation?
That might influence things. I often try to get another client or two in
situations like this, and spread the travel costs among them.

It is not unusual for people to charge a percentage of their normal day
 rate
for long distance travel. So you could also ask for that directly. Yes you
are not working directly for them but you are giving up other work time for
 them, them being the client.

Can I assume you are getting all travel costs reimbursed as well?

Then I consider the client - their size and budget, how much I want the
 job,
how much will it help me and my portfolio, what can I get done on the
 plane,
etc. It may be that you can book some storyboarding type time and
 actually
do that on the plane to get compensated for your work and your time,
 without
having to bill directly for travel time.

Hope this helps - as you can see there are a lot of options therefore no
wrong answers. Just do what will make you feel good about going and do a
superb job for the client! It's in their best interest for you to be fresh,
 happy, and inspired.

 *flawless* is the

It's not that hard to get sound right. You just have to hire a

And above all, given that it's about web video, it should have

I think another lesson to learn here is also that you can get anyone to get

Great job David, and again I didn't want suggest anything derogatory. I
remember Google giving some numbers last year at about this time that

I did email the owner first, giving them the benefit of the doubt that
they may have just copied my site as a temporary template or
 something.
But once I realised it was clear deception and they were real-time
leeching and modifying my site for profit, that was it, take-down
 notice it was.
I also wanted to stop them from simply pointing their script at
someone else's video blog instead of mine, and the only way to do that
is to have their account suspended.

I don't think it's that easy to get another site taken down just by
accusation. You do have to prove to some human at least at the web
host that they have copied your content. They (I'm hoping) wouldn't
just shut down your site based on an accusation without at least a
cursary comparison between the sites/content in question to make sure
the claim has at least some basis.

BTW, this is the actual host in question:
 http://www.pronethosting.net/company/legal/terms-of-service/#cv
They sound quite through and not the trigger happy type.
But I suspect most hosts would err on the side of caution and suspend
the site if there is at least some reasonable evidence of violation.
If there is no evidence however, I'm sure they'd just ignore the
request, or in the case of this host, refer them to the authorities.

 Dave.

As a full disclosure Tom, Lijit is a previous client of mine.

The Lijit widget is paid for on its end buy advertising. The reason it
offers up other sites for the serach term is because it will provide
information of the people in your network.

You can configure the search results to default to your own blog initially
and then to your network of friends and their blogs, then to the web etc. I
am curious whether you also waited until the reports are sent out on Sunday
evening. It provides valuable information about what searches brought
people to your site, searches that people made on your site that do not
provide results etc.

The Lijit search function also allows people to get to other related search
results within your site that might also interest them It will increase
your page views from that standpoint. It may be that they can turn off ads
on your search results and they actually have a revenue share from that
end. I'll let them answer your questions directly and I know Tara Anderson
and her staff would be happy to answer all the questions to your
satisfaction. If not let me know and I will help where I can.

Julian,

Thanks for this question. I also need to begin to generate this type of
content for embedding in client blogs and websites etc, and I am reluctant
to get a professional rig when I see people doing well with a Flip or
otherwise and have been worried about better audio.

I think the Kodak Zi8 is leading the way with external mics and ease of use,
but I also hear stories of it malfunctioning and not working up to standards
of those that believe mics are important for the sound quality of a
professional video.

I am also very interested in what the experts here are doing and what they

and want a tool or process that will make the process quick and easy. Do you
 have any recommendations?

 Thanks so much!

p.s. Anyone drooling over the new full HD 60fps Sanyo Xacti VPS-CS1 for
$299? I am. I'm thinking it is my next camera but I'm terribly sad they
didn't put an external mic on it. Instead we have Sound zoom. Bollocks.

[videoblogging] HART Brochure - Haiti Relief

2010-01-15 Thread Jim Turner
I have been putting together a radiothon that is going to begin On Sunday at
6 p.m. PT and will continue for 24 hours to Monday.

The company that will be helping host is WhatGives.com

I'll be doing the show on WSRadio.com and we will be livestreaming the show
on Ustream.com

I am attaching a brochure for you guys to look at. I am looking for guests
and call ins as well as brands that want to help. I am about to push this
out and thought it timely for all concerned. The Hashtag we will be using
is #HART and those that can help would be welcome and all is very
appreciative. If you are in the San Diego area let me know we will get you
on the show, otherwise a call in is also welcome so I don't have to talk to
myself for 24 hours.

We have levels of donations for companies and you as an individual can give
as much as a dollar to help.

My first post to this group was on June 6th, 2004.

The first message in this group was June 1, 2004.

  Mine was the 6th message.

  It's been a wild ride from 2004 to 2010.

I remember the first Vloggercon in NYC in 2005 and the second in SF in
  2006.

My book is a nice how to guide for people starting out in online video.
 For
some of us who have been putting video on blogs wince 2004, it's seems so
  easy now.

When we started there was no YouTube, we were worried that our videos
 would
get popular, because that would cost us money.

Now we've got a myriad of free hosting solutions for have lots of great
  features.

But there still are and will always be people starting out.

That's where my book comes in. In the book I talk about choosing a
 camera,
getting good sound and lighting, and how to conduct interviews. Also, how
 to
edit and post, and how to go live.

I've interviewed a number of Yahoo! videoblogging group members.

I made a post today called, Where To Buy Get Seen. It's a very simple
 post
showing where people can order the book.

  It's at:
  http://bit.ly/buy-getseen

In addition to that the book has a website,
  http://stevegarfield.com/getseen

Over there I'm posting video interviews that I made for the book and
 there
are discussion forums for people who read the book who might have some
  questions.

So that's it. Just wanted to drop by and give you guys an update.

  Thanks for your support.

Re: [videoblogging] BETA TESTERS?

2009-12-29 Thread Jim Turner
Kevin I wouldn't call it a fiasco necessarily but more of a paradigm shift
in the way marketing of products occurred online with users.

The grabfest you refer to was probably BlogHer held in Chicago where every
brand possible was trying to get their products into the hands of a blogger
that might write about it and send them traffic links etc.

We had a similar attempt to introduce brands to bloggers at Blog World Expo
which was more of what we called a speed dating moment where bloggers could
sit down with brands and see how they could collaborate. Meaning how can we
get you to expose our products to your community.

This is the new age of marketing in the social media world and everyone is
falling over themselves to figure it out.

I was referring to when the bloggers had figured out that they had leverage
to the company brands in community and readers, or listeners or the like.

The review products are flying off the shelves to bloggers and perhaps now
even the video world to get them to help sale the goods.

This is in part why the FTC has now called out the disclosure regulations
related to review products.

From what I recall, there was a major meetup for mommy bloggers and
brands showed up to give them tons of freebies, which turned it into a
horrific grabfest. Folks felt ashamed by the whole incident and I
 think ethical concerns were raised.

I'm sketchy as I said, and I tried googling, but lacked details.

was Steve who wrote (not literally!) we need a bit time to have energy for
the next passionate conference. But if it had been an overwhelming success
wouldn't it have taken place in 2007?
  - Wasn't the vloggercon successful?
  - Did the vloggercon mean too much effort (maybe for earning no money - I
don't know the details for the organisers)?
Hopefully it's not a redundant topic - I was searching and reading for
 one hour.

No good answer. I think because they were so fun, it created a lot of
expectation for the next ones to be better. Difficult to live up to.
Also putting on events with little money takes its tool. It's several
months of full-time work. There was something special about how
 spontaneous and crazy Vloggercon was.

An ambitious mix of Europeans have put on Vlogeurope every year since
 2005: http://vlogeurope.com
Adam has put on http://vloggercue.blogspot.com/ a couple times.
 (2005/2007)
http://pixelodeon.org/ was a related event put on by this community in
 2007.

Bill Streeter did a great job organizing
http://twitter.com/vloggercamp in 2008...but the crash of the economy
and high gas prices cancelled it.

There are other online video events that have popped up as well like
New Media Expo (http://www.blogworldexpo.com/) and NewTeeVee Live
 (http://events.newteevee.com/live/09/). Different beasts though.

Events seem to happen when they need to happen.

I really appreciate the offer of help Roxanne. I am actually wanted to get
your help for www.rethinkhawaii.com very soon. I think we can get you on
the agenda there for sure if you are not already booked by the other
organizers.

Part of the other propblem is we are under tight restrictions with the
Internet provider at the Las Vegas Convention Center. We have to have their
service and you either like it or lump it I am afraid. They can charge
anything they want and make it as good or bad an experience as they deem
fit.

I really want to allow others that cannot make the trip to at least see a a
little of what they are missing. I have received a couple of proposals and
they are in line with what I was thinking and you are very correct when you
say people and cahs for bandwidth. I have a meeting set soon with Ustream
and with Livestream, but alas most companies want to charge me to feature
them and frankly I don't have the cash part yet.

BTW if any of you are planning to go to Vegas in October and have not yet
signed up I have a special code for the discount I would be happy to pass
along to you.

To answer your questions Roxanne--Yes.

I have thought of all of these different things and my problem is of course
logistics and all that comes with those issues.

I am talking with Rick and others to try to get this accomplished.

[videoblogging] BlogWorld New Media Expo 2009

2009-08-10 Thread Jim Turner
As we begin to aproach the final draft of the speakers for the event coming
up in October, I am looking over the lst of speakers we have and I think we
are going to be adequate this year. I am not sure if it will be stallar
because honesty makes me say I am just not well versed enough in the video
and podcasting world yet to know if we are doing the group justice. With
that stated, anyone in this group that would like a discount code for the
event in October, please let me know I would be happy to provide one to you.

Now with the advertisement out of the way, I am looking for someone to shoot
some quality video and help us live stream the event at Blog World. Can
anyone help with that? I am also thinking of live streaming myself as I
attend the event and provide somewhat of an behind the scenes look at what
goes on as well as through the eyes of its social media director. Can
anyone help with this? Please let me know.

We are also thinking of having a stage set up for attendees to use for their
live streams, their podcasts or a backdrop for video they want to take.
Please let me know if you are interested in helping in that way.

Thanks for hearing me out.

But I think mag.ma is an elegant solution to those times when you want

My beef, having a well-loved show with longevity but not huge amounts
of traditional popularity, is a way to move beyond the algorithms of
popularity. Most of the video hosting sites show the most popular -
which become more popular because it's so easy to watch what is on the
home page. The discovery part gets diluted quickly in favor of the
mob. Videos that appeal to the 15-25 male demographic continue to rule
  - they seem to have the most time to watch these and make them popular
by default. Looking at the top listings on Magma right now is enough
for me to think, same old same old; no need to return.

Thank heaven the TED videos are on the home page however. But then I
  already subscribe to them. :-)

I did try to add 3 BeachWalks,tv videos to the mix and got this error
  on all three:
This video could not be embedded at this time.

I'll be glad to help troubleshoot this with you unless you already
  know what the problem is.

Well, one thing struck me immediately. In with all the
freely-available media there's a bunch of stuff from the restricted
   Hulu, un-watchable outside North America.

While I can see why you have included it, I would *really*
  appreciate
some way of telling from a thumbnail whether I might actually be
  able
to watch the video, rather than having to play a guessing game and
click through to the magma page for each video. IMHO an ethical
aggregator should highlight unrestricted, community-sourced video,
  and
at least warn viewers of potentially restricted sources.

   Otherwise it certainly looks interesting.

Chuck Olsen recently pointed me to this theme that looks cool:

I'd suggest finding someone's videoblog that you really like. Often
theres a link to the theme's creator at the footer. Or just email the

Re: [videoblogging] Blog World Expo and New Media Conference [ Vloggercon 2009? ]

2009-05-14 Thread Jim Turner
I'll confirm what Steve has said. I just joined the group not long ago as I
have started www.socialmediasphere.tv and wanted a place to learn more about
this crazy video world which I am falling in love with. I am the conference
director and the social media director for Blog World and New Media Expo and
as stated we are now merged with the New Media Expo as of December and would
love to have a Vloggercon in Vegas. Vegas is really looking to make things
awesome for visitors as the economy is really cutting into their business so
it is really affordable. You can contact me Steve at Jim at
Blogworldexpo.com and my cell is (303)594-6276

Right now we have opened the speakers proposals and we are taking them
through May 31. Feel free to submit anything in that regard. I look
forward to your comments and will pass those along to our CEO who is in
Germany at the moment, but I will be in Hawaii with him and a couple of
weeks. Yeah dirty job but someone has to do it... I am actiually trying to
figure out a way to live stream my trip to Hawaii and have had my Twitter
followers pick my itinerary so I can video what they choose and allow them
to come along for the ride.

Please let me know if you guys have any questions.

Re: [videoblogging] Blog World Expo and New Media Conference [ Vloggercon 2009? ]

2009-05-14 Thread Jim Turner
 two cents.

 Jeffrey

 2009/5/14 Rupert rup...@fatgirlinohio.org

I'm not sure it's a question of nobody wanting to run it. I think
it's more a question of people not wanting to travel halfway across
the country/world to attend a vlogging event.

You know that I love this community, and so I'm not being negative
about it. Just being realistic about what I see as people's
  priorities and interests.

Bill Streeter tried valiantly to organise Vloggercamp last year, and
there was a lot of interest from people signing up on the wiki - but
in the end people just weren't motivated enough to pay the
registration fee, let alone buy plane tickets.

Pixelodeon got quite a few people attending because it was all about
screening lots of videos in a posh venue. But even then most of the
people who attended were from the West, I think. And that was two
years ago, and things have changed in the vlogosphere and in the
  economy.

The original Vloggercons and Vloggies worked because of the excitement
of vlogging being so new. I wish I'd been able to attend.

There's a small number of people here who do attend podcamps, new
media expo, etc. The people who make their living from social media
that you see on Twitter constantly tweeting about the latest social
media trends and business opportunities, and telling you how to blog
and make money from blogging. But this doesn't include the majority
  of vloggers, I don't think.

And I'm not sure that most of the vloggers I know would be that into
attending a big corporate Las Vegas expo as opposed to something much
  more intimate.

What does anybody else think? Maybe Jeffrey could pipe in with his
  experience of organising VlogEurope?
