[videoblogging] Videoblogging Course

2008-02-21 Thread Kenya Allmond
Someone just sent this on Twitter. I think it's very interesting how expensive
this course is especially since there are various resources online as well as
unconferences that are free.

I can't retrieve. When I put it in my card reader and put the card
reader in my USB, I am getting an error message that says the disk is
not formatted and do I want to re-format. I don't notice any damage to
the card. How can I retrieve the files? And info, insight most needed
and appreciated. Thanks.

Where can someone go on the web to learn how to convert an existing WMV

Try ImTOO Video and Audio Suite (http://imtoo.com/video-and-audio-suite.html).
I think the 'free' version allows you to convert videos up to 5 minutes (with
some nag screens). And the full version is $45.

This software actually helped salvage some of my corrupted AVIs.

Re: [videoblogging] Wordpress Issue - Please Assist

2007-12-23 Thread Kenya Allmond
I'm guessing that the reason for this is that on own WordPress blog you have to
use the actual HTML code provided by Blip or whoever instead of the tags that
you can use on WordPress.com ... unless there is some plugin that allows you to
use the tags.

Ok so I'm doing my first - host on your own - Wordpress blog. I used
to do a lot of HTML and JAVA and early FLASH back in the early to mid
nineties but gave up web coding when I become an English major and
thought I had better things to write than scripts and webpages.

So here's the deal...
I've exported my old wordpress hosted site - and brought it back into
my new shiny dreamhost hosted site.

There's just one problem. All of my [audio...mp3] and [bliptv...=1]
tags (truncated for examples sake) aren't working. Feel free to take
a look. The top post is a perfect example.

Now I'm just now picking up on plugins and whatnot - and yes I tried
turning visual design off, and turning it back on...so I don't know
what hte problem is.

If anyone has a clue it would be greatly appreciated.

Love the forum - love the daily links and discussion - glad to be a
part of and grateful for your help in advance.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: ARTICLE - Web Video: Move Over, Amateurs

2007-11-20 Thread Kenya Allmond
If anything, the shift of TV shows moving to the Web will INCREASE the
amount of viewers for ALL video. It means that Mainstream Mom will
start feeling comfortable watching video online. That is great! It
opens up an even bigger audience beyond the 18-25 year-olds that
 currently dominate online video viewing.

I agree. I think that for the average person these days, online video is
synonymous with YouTube. Every time I have my camera out someone mentions
YouTube. A few weeks ago, I showed a friend a video I made on Halloween. The
first thing he said was That was neat. Are you going to put it on YouTube?
It was already on my site so I didn't get why he thought it should be on
YouTube. I showed another friend some online videos and she said that she had
no idea such a thing existed on the Internet. She also didn't know that she
could watch missed TV shows at the networks' websites. She knew about YouTube
though.

I think that as more video becomes available appetites for it will increase. I
don't think it's a competition for viewers. The on-demand nature of online
video will allow folks to watch everything instead of being forced to choose.
I've already been watching network shows online. In a particular case it's 3
shows that come on at the same time. I watch 1 on TV if I'm home then watch
the other 2 online when I feel like it. Otherwise I watch all 3 online at my
leisure in between videos from folks on this list. I think that same will be
the case when the masses start doing it. People aren't going to have to choose
and I don't think they will.

The article looks like propaganda to steer advertisers away from indy content
to me. But I think that if an indy show has good viewership, that's probably a
better deal for advertisers since indy shows spend significantly less than a
big media show and therefore are able to accept less money than a mainstream
show.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Online Video Posting Sites, HELP NEEDED please! :)

2007-11-14 Thread Kenya Allmond
If they do follow you to your blog to harrass you, each comment they
send you will come with their IP address - which is a number unique
(in most cases) to their internet connection. With your own Wordpress
blog, you can blacklist those specific IP addresses in your blog's
simple control panel. Get a comment from a stalker, copy the IP
address from their comment into your blog's IP-blocking box, and bam,
 their internet connection is blocked.
This is an excellent idea. In addition, having the stalker's IP address is one
step closer to that person's identity especially if the stalking is taken to
the real world. To get those IP addresses from YouTube (if they respond to
you) requires a subpoena.

Re: [videoblogging] bad Western Digital Hardrives?

2007-11-13 Thread Kenya Allmond
As you have seen in the replies, it's pretty much a crap shoot regarding hard
drives. At work we handle hundreds, if not thousands, of hard drives
regularly. The ones that fail most of the time are LaCie and Seagate even
though we buy primarily Western Digital internal and Maxtor externals. We have
relatively few problems with Western Digital and Maxtor.

Hard drives have moving parts that are bound to fail. The best choice for
storing large amounts of data is some sort of RAID configuration where if one
or two disks go, the data can be reconstructed. Even then you still have to
back the data up if it's valuable.

The funny thing about media is that pretty much everything out there WILL fail.
CDs and DVDs have shelf lives (not sure what it is though). And hard drives
crash. Companies still use tapes for backup and they are problematic as well.

All that to say: Use a RAID and backup often.

I think I read either here or on Twitter that Bill
Streeter had 3 harddrives go bad last week. I'm
starting to find that my Western Digital WD HD's don't
show up on the desktop. And one of them had smoke
coming out like a toaster. Any other thoughts on these
always on sale at Best Buy clunkers. I'm gonna spend
the $ on reliable LaCie.

[videoblogging] Repair AVI files?

2007-11-06 Thread Kenya Allmond
Hi all,

A large number of the AVI files that my camera creates are corrupted. Some
will not open at all while others open but have flickering and static. I don't
know how it happened; it could be that they were damaged when I copied them
onto my hard drive but that really doesn't matter at this point. I've already
tried to see if I could recover them from the memory card but I had already
overwritten them.

Does anyone know of a tool that I can use that will repair (or salvage whatever
can be salvaged from) the videos? I did a Google search but don't really want
to install some random program. I'd rather get recommendations first. I'm on
XP but have access to Macs as well.

Thanks.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: electric slide youtube copyright insanity

2007-10-21 Thread Kenya Allmond
From the Washington Post article, Ric Silver:

I can't go to every wedding and bar mitzvah in the country, so this is
all I can do to make sure people learn it right, Silver said.

So take down every wedding or bar mitzvah video that has the electric slide in
it? I don't see how take down notices accomplish his goal. I'm interested in
finding out if he has the right to use the Marcia Griffiths song in his own
videos.

It's also interesting that the woman is suing Universal Music Group over her
baby video being taken down because it has a Prince song in it. I wonder what
the outcome will be.

Also from the article:

Take, for example, Karen Dudnikov and Michael Meadors. They run a mom-and-pop
eBay store out of rural Colorado,
10 miles from the nearest power line. When they opened, Dudnikov began
sewing pillows, potholders and other items out of fabric with licensed
images of cartoon characters and other trademarked or copyrighted
images. Soon they found their auctions were being taken down because of
infringement allegations.

To date they've taken 15 corporate heavyweights to court -- including Disney
Enterprises, Major League Baseball and MM/Mars -- and gotten them all to back
down. Facing off against these legal powerhouses, they represented themselves.

To me, this makes even less sense than the YouTube take down notices. The only
way these people were able to make things with fabric with copyrighted images
is because the copyright holders put that fabric in the stores to sell to the
public. What did they think people were going to do with it? I can see in the
future the copyright holders trying to get consumers to sign a EULA right in
the craft store before they leave.

he is just waiting for new rules from congress.

Machulis sued Silver for copyright abuse. As part of the settlement,

Re: [videoblogging] Are You Having Technical Problems With Blip TV

2007-10-18 Thread Kenya Allmond
Hi,

The Firefox issue is probably some setting that is not allowing you to upload
video. I use Firefox almost exclusively and haven't had any with blip but I
have seen others who had settings that blocked interactive type functionality
on various sites.

As far as slow upload speeds with Internet Explorer, if your videos aren't huge
it could be a number of things including slow connection, ISP blocking
something, Windows settings, firewall settings, spyware trojans eating up
your bandwidth, etc. It could even be Internet Explorer.

To identify whether the browser is the problem, I suggest FTPing the videos.
Instructions are here: http://blip.tv/ftp/
I use FileZilla as my FTP client - it's free and easy to use. Here's a video
on how to set it up: http://blip.tv/file/367660/

If you are able to upload via FTP without issue, then the problem is your
browser. Otherwise, there are many other things to explore including what
others have suggested.

Subject: [videoblogging] Are You Having Technical Problems With Blip TV

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if any of you out there have experienced any problems
recently with uploading your videos onto Blip? Last week, I was
unable to upload my video after multiple attempts over a couple of
days using both Firefox and Internet Explorer.

When I contacted Blip they accused my year old Dell XPS M140 for the
problems although offering no REAL concrete answers or solutions to
why this happen and how to avoid it in the future.

I've been uploading my videos to Blip since Feb 2007 and I've never
been able to use Firefox for any of my uploads, and some of my uploads
have taken as long as 6 hours. Is this normal using Blip?

I cannot continue to have these problems and have Blip point the
finger at me and my computer. Does anyone have any insight or answers
to these questions?

Thanks!

This is also encourage more artists to go independent...and the

Not only that, but unless I'm missing something here, I don't see
anything beneficial for videobloggers or even the average Joe who post
videos there. When I saw your post in my filter list Kendra, I
thought it was an announcement of YouTube rolling out the downloadable

return of director accounts after an overhaul).

All this is is simply good news for people like the RIAA and the MPAA.
As such, I don't think I'll be participating in this program

Just my honest opinion

2007-10-17 Thread Kenya Allmond
Once again, the whole thing's retarded. None of this would even be
happening if YouTube hadn't been *BUILT* on blatant piracy from day 1.

I agree. The exact matching is ridiculous and isn't going to find anything but
videos that are either directly from the studios or mass downloaded from
somewhere else. Only one byte of the file needs to be changed for the hash
values not to match.

As far as the audio, I'd imagine that it will be similar to Verizon's V Cast
Song Id where you play a song into the phone and get back the song title,
artist, etc. I read that there are a lot of false positives. Like you said I
don't think they are going to actually check anything and it's advantageous for
copyright holders to have false positives because they can control other folks
stuff.

Waiting for a leader to arise is apathetic. If you believe in a cause why wait

OK, with exception to folks outside the US
this story was out there on the net, blogs,
myspace, youtube. I heard about the Jena 6
story through Pacifica radio. For who those
that don't know. That's the PBS(public
broadcast station) of radio. t was like
someone was t sleep at the wheel when this
thing was making its round on the net.
Yes
this is not a virtual newsdesk group but
it does relate to videoblogging in a indirect
way. Local news broadcast from the area of
the incident was posted blogs, myspace, youtube
and so on. Is this group resting on its past
laurels. Wasn't one of the many reasons
we joined this list was to challenge the
system to do things that the mainstream
media wasn't capable of or motivated in doing.
Has this group fallen off.(not literally)
It's not about the technology it about the
people behind and in front of the camera.
I loved this group because it felt like we
were pushing the envelope and using video
in an innovative way. I can't blame this
group for anything. It's just a reflection
of the attitudes of the off-line world.
There's much diversity. The issues is no
different that you find in
 blogisphere and
podcasting community. The only thing that
left for me to feel excited for is the
technology innovations. Outside that it
has been ho hum discussion wise. I use to
look forward to reading the discussions
in group. It felt like a community of smart,
caring people who wanted to use technology
to shake things up. I guess I was just being
a bit naive. Nobody cares about anything
anymore. Have we become apathetic narcissist.
I this might sound negative, buts it not. My
heart is a bleeding just one that is sick of
the ways things are. I have tried to believe
in the goodness of people and thought would get
better.(this is a general statement about the
world as a whole) They haven't gotten any better
of course unless you one of the privileged few.
There no more Ghandi, Martin,
 Malcolm, Bobby,
John John or Theodore. Where are our heroes
for the 21st century. Will they emerge from
a unlikely source like this group?

If your point is Why Didn't We Discuss This Before, then why didn't

Personally, until Heath's post, which I read after reading yours, I
didn't know anything about it - first news I heard of it in the UK
was last night, and there was no mention of videoblogging or the web
as a crucial part of the story. And you know what, I didn't find out
from your unhelpfully toned and negative message.
This isn't a rolling news discussion group. If you think something

accuse everyone else of being dishonest or hypocritical for doing the
 same.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: YouTube suspends Vloggers account for Fair Use.

2007-09-19 Thread Kenya Allmond
My Prince lip-sync video (not unlike Vlog Deathmatch videos) was taken down
from YouTube a few weeks ago. Since then I have not put it on Blip because I
would rather not see them added to the list of folks being sued these days.
Veoh is being sued as well as of earlier this month.

Because of how the law is written, a video hosting service (or even your ISP)
is given no choice but to take the allegedly infringing material down first
because that's the only way that they will not be held liable. They also have
to terminate the accounts of repeat infringers. (See pages 9 and 11 of
http://www.copyright.gov/legislation/dmca.pdf)

When the lawyers, etc., find out about Blip I'm sure they
will point their minions at it as well. There are companies that do nothing
but search YouTube all day looking for infringing videos. From what I gather
from an article I read, these people aren't particularly skilled at recognizing
nuances of copyright law and probably don't even know what fair use is. Rest
assured if your video is completely legitimate, these people have no way of
knowing. They just know that it had a clip of some video or music in it. Even
if you have permission, they won't know and your video will be yanked. There's
really no protection for the little guy.

A guess as to why we don't hear about this take-down procedures in
relation to blip?

Blip doesn't figure in any of the reports about market share for top
video providers. Myspace, Youtube, Yahoo, Google get a mention, but
never Blip. Lawyers are too busy working to know that there are any
other places on the internet
of any size that show web video. Plus
if they just spend enough time to write one letter to Youtube, then
they can spend very little time working on the problem. but show
their client they're a great job and charge a lot of money for the
letter and their 'time'. My Prince gig visit was killed on Youtube,
but not on Blip.
Sooner or later, as Youtube's market share goes down (which it will
hugely, I'm sure), they will have to get smarter :(
