I'm not trying to be harsh. I've looked at the freevlog stuff, in fact that's where I started. And this group is where I'd be looking for the answers, but no one seems to be able to solve this problem, neither the blip.tv people, the freevlog people, etc. I just want to know what format people are using that works for as many people as possible.

So once you use Comressor to export the iPod 320x240, the you re-save it to .mov? Because the iPod settings don't allow options

[videoblogging] Re: can someone PLEASE tell me the right format to use?

2006-03-15 Thread Bill Streeter
The problem is that there is no one format that can be viewed by
EVERYONE on all systems. There are a few that are more universal
than others. But in choosing one, you have to decide how you expect
your audience to view your material.

Do you expect your viewers to only watch your videos on your blog or
Web site?
Do you want your viewers to be able to download the videos for later
viewing?
Do you want to distribute your videos via an RSS feed?
Do you think a lot of your viewers will be watching on some portable
device like a PSP or an iPod?

Some formats can meet all these criteria for some people, others
only work well in some scenarios.

If you want your videos available to be viewed on an iPod choose
correctly encoded MOV, or MP4 formats. If you only expect the videos
to be viewed in the context of a web page Flash Video is probably
the most universal format. You can distribute most formats via RSS
but the most popular video RSS client is iTunes and it only plays
variants of MP4 and MOVs. Fireant will play almost anything. PSPs
require a different encoding of the MP4 format than iPods do.

Compression is as much an art as a science. There is virtually no
difference between encoding video from a consumer camera for the web
as there is for a professional post production suite. When it comes
to compression everyone is using the same tools for the most part--
or at least the same codecs.

There are other things to keep in mind as well. If you are posting
quicktime or MP4 files you need to know that IE breaks the fast
start in these formats. So that Explorer viewers will likely have to
wait for the entire video to download before they can watch your
movie. Sometimes this wait results in viewers clicking off the page
assuming that they can't view the movie for some reason. The work
around is to embed the movies--and that can cause problems too if
you don't do it just right.

So the answer is there is no simple answer. I recommend starting
with the Free Vlog compression tutorial and then use trial and error
to perfect your own scheme.

[videoblogging] Re: can someone PLEASE tell me the right format to use?

2006-03-14 Thread Gena
Dude, this is like searching for the Holy Grail. I know others have
given answers to you (and have done a good job) but let me put my
pagan, base level, un-coothed two cents into the mix. If you are
still reading this then there is hope so let's rock:

1. There is no standard video delivery format for all computer
systems. At least not this week. Things change quickly here so I
gotta watch my words carefully. The one that would come close for XP,
Mac, Linux and Solaris would be .avi but the huge file size would put
off 95.9% of your viewers. Next would be Flash. As mentioned before
there are issues with video quality and you don't necessarily escape
the file size issue.

2. At best, we consider our potential viewers and the means they
connect to the Internet, their connection speed and the preferred
method of delivery, i.e. on-line, download for later viewing on a
computer/home dvd player or media player users.

3. We also consider the quality level of what we want to produced.
Some folks just want to get it out and up, some want a smooth polish
and sparkle. To each his/her/its own. But it is part of the
consideration when you are producing web video.

4. Doesn't matter if you are using Windows Movie Maker 2 or FCP HD.
It is the end result, does the video convey what you wanted.

Yes, we want to make it easier for anybody to view stuff.

Yes, we want one way for all people (speakiing only of video and not
sex).

Until the re-incarnated version of Edison gets to work on a universal
format these are the tools we have to work with.

5. The right format is the one YOU decide based on the above factors
and what you want to accomplish.

I leave you to your magic, I go now to cram the National Library of
Medicine classification list in my head. I have 20 minutes.

Piece of cake.
