I'd like to add that iTunes cannot convert all videos to an ipod
compatible format also. It will not play or convert WMV's or SWF's
which are two of the most common formats.

THat said... wmv's are statistically pretty rare among videoblogs.
Just how rare I don't know... and even rarer perhaps among blip users.
Flash is also pretty oncommon in subscription feeds too depending on
how advanced you are and where you look. For example... I doubt there
are even a handful of feeds coming from blip that have a Flash as the
default video format coming from RSS, and if you look in the iTunes
podcasting directory you'll certainly find none. This is because flash
is usualy used only for web based playback and is not easily
downloadable and syndicateable, especially to 3rd party hardware.

On the other hand the biggest video site on the web, Youtube ONLY
offers Flash in their feeds. Both Mefeedia and Democracy do support
flash and I can't speak for democracy, but on Mefeedia the probability
of finding video feeds that are using flash is increasingly pretty
rapidly, while WMV's and all other non-Quicktime/non-iTunes/non-iPod
compatible formats are on the decrease.

In fact... "just what formats are vloggers using?" is a great question
for Frank Sinton over at mefeedia.com. I can think of noone else who
can dig up such info as to the state of the video blogging space.
Perhaps he'll read this and do a little reasearch, take a slice of all
the last months activity and let us here know what percentage of what
videoblogs and podcasts were in what format. I think MANY here would
really like to know.

All this is to say. Gromik, welcome to the videoblogging group...
great question... I hope you like democracy and blip... and if you
have any videos that iTunes won't convert to an iPod compatible format
on the fly or any trouble whatsoever let us know. We're definitely
interested.

Also... one last thing... Not that there could be anything better then
Democracy --> iTunes --> iPod... for watching vlogs on your iPod.
But does anyone else have any solutions that might cover 100% of the
video formats and work simpler for vlog aggregation and watching on
your ipod?

I assume you're on mac right Gromik? While it's a superb competitor
to Democracy I don't think the mac version of Fireant.tv has
transcoding either.

Also... Can anyone verify wether you have to have Quicktime Pro or not
in order for iTunes to automatically convert video formats to an ipod
compatible format?

2007-03-29 Thread Bill Streeter
Not a bad question--one of the purposes of this list is for newbie
questions.

Actually I think the premise of your question is slightly off. Blip
doesn't "use" the Democracy Player, you use the Democracy Player to
get Blip.tv content. You can also use other aggregators like FireAnt
and iTunes to get Blip.tv content. If you subscribe to a Blip feed
directly in iTunes and configure ipod to automatically sync podcasts
then your Blip.tv content will make it to your ipod as podcasts.

I should also point out that this only works when the original
content is in an ipod compatible format. Blip.tv doesn't require all
their users to submit or publish iPod compatible files so not
everything from blip will necessarily work on your ipod.

2007-03-29 Thread Bill Cammack
Yes you can.

Open your downloaded file in iTunes. Connect your iPod, and drag the
video from the iTunes list onto the location where you can select your
iPod. It will either start transferring it, or it will tell you it
can't do it because the video isn't in the correct format. If it
won't send it, select the video you want to send to the iPod and at
the menu on the top, select ADVANCED and then CONVERT SELECTION FOR
IPOD in the drop-down. iTunes will make another file for you that's
compatible, and then you'll be able to send it to your iPod.

2007-03-29 Thread Gromik Tohoku
Hi,

Blip.tv uses democracy player as a distribution for
videoblog films.

I was wondering once I download a movie via democracy
player, can I upload it on my iPod?

sorry this is a really newbie question.

Thanks for providing an answer,
sincerely
Nicolas
