Subject: [videoblogging] Quick question regarding blip pro..

 Hi Everyone!
If I upload videos on my free account and they time out on
conversion,
will I be able to go pro and reconvert and also convert for apple
 quicktime?

Reason I ask is I have a number of large videos, but a slooow
connection, I am wanting to pre-upload before going pro so I can
get
the best value out of blip without the slowness of my
connection 'degrading' my subscription to blip.
 Thanks in advance!

It doesnt seem to, it plays in itunes but itunes wont copy it to the

double-check that it doesnt, later.

OK Itunes tells me that both the sound and video format are not AAC-LC
for audio or mpeg 4 or h264 for video, but rather sorenson 3 and
QDesign music 2, which the ipod doesnt support.

You need to encode your vids with totally different settings to
achieve ipod compatibility.

.mov export in Vegas sucks. It's not worth using at all. Pay for quicktime

From what I recall ... it's not vegas' fault but Quicktime's. There
is something about the Windows Quicktime API that is not exposed to
windows applications (not even if you have QT Pro installed). I'm
pretty sure its the AAC audio codec.

Basically windows applications cant request the AAC codec be used via
the QT API.

You can use all sorts of other QT stuff ... but cant do ipod formatted
video without QT Pro ... because on a windows box only QT pro is going
to be able to access the parts of QT for Windows that allows for AAC
audio compression.

... poorly described ... but the bottom line is that in windows you
need QT Pro, and you have to actually use it (not some other app) to
do the final compression.

[videoblogging] Re: quick question

2007-06-04 Thread Steve Watkins
This situation means that even if buying quicktime pro, the process
will be more of a pain than your current export from video editing app.

Because now you will have to save your video timeline to an
intermediate format, which will then be loaded into quicktime pro (or
alternative) to be encoded.

To get decent quality, your intermediate format needs to be high
quality and bitrate, perhaps native DV format if thats what your
source camera is, and so long as your video editing app doesnt take
too long to export it.

Its a time/filespace/quality balance as to what you use, something
people dont need to worry about if the right export options are
available straight from their video editing app.

Also bear in mind quicktime is not the only h264 encoder available for
Windows or mac, here is my assessment of pro's and cons of Quicktime
versus other options:

pro's:
Its farily cheap
Lots of people know how to use it advise if you have problems
As Apple make quicktime and the ipod apple tv, we should be
confident that its output will be compatible
Its pretty easy to use

con's:
Its not free (some alternatives are free but can be harder to use)
Its not the fastest
If you want to make 640x480 files and your video to be encoded is
interlaced, quicktime doesnt do deinterlacing and so makes a pigs ear
of the results
Lack of manual control over bitrate ( thus filesize) if using apple
ipod tv presets

I still havent found the perfect alternative h264 encoder that is free
or dirt cheap for Windows, is easy to use, and accepts most formats of
video, and handles de-interlacing, although Im sure such an app exists
or could be made out of existing free hard to use stuff.

The only alternative commercial Windows h264 encoder I hav experience
with is Nero Recode 2. It may represent good value if all the other
apps it comes packaged with (cd writing etc), are of use. It is faster
than qucktime encoding for sure. I am not sure how up-to-date its
device profiles (ipod etc) are, but it does offer a lot of encoding
options, which is a good and bad thing. I cant remember wheher its
intelligent when it comes to deinterlacing or not, I will use it again
soon to refresh my knowledge.

That's been my experience yeah. I edit in Premier Elements and
export the final product as an uncompressed AVI (usually not too
painful my vlogs are all only 4-7minutes and I have a firewire drive
set aside for video production).

Then I load up the AVI in QT Pro and compress it down to a 3vix encoded MOV.

(Then - cause I'm a geek - I add on some QT interactive stuff, but
thats purely optional :P )

Then I upload it to blip!

As Steve points out there are other apps out there that have some
'compress for ipod' features (and some may be free) ... but I've not
tried them. Videora comes to mind. ??

I just up and got Quicktime Pro to do this last leg compression step,
and so far I haven't regretted it.

[videoblogging] Re: quick question

2007-06-04 Thread Steve Watkins
Aha you are using 3ivx, which is the older type mpeg4, rather than
h264, but is superior in speed and quality to apples mpeg4.

Certainly when it comes to mpeg4 rather than h264, theres a lot more
choice of encoders editing apps that may have built in export. 3ivx
on Windows may not even need quicktime pro to work, I cant remember.

Its a real shame that something went odd at 3ivx and they havent
released any updates or new versions for what seems to be years now.
So for those still wishing to use their stuff, and create ipod
apple-tv compatible mpeg4 instead of h264, its harder to recommend
3ivx than it used to be.

They have also annoyed some of their users/customers by repeatedly
stating release dates for the next version of 3ivx, and then failing
to release at all for ages afterwards. This year, they announced 3ivx
5 in January, but it didnt materialise. Then it was about to be
released in February, with the assurance that just some minor thing
was preventing release. Now it June and it might come out on Tuesday
apparently, but based on past history it will be a minor miracle if
this happens. At this rate mpeg4 will be obsolete, totally replaced by
h264, by the time they update! Bugs that have existed in Mac version
since Tiger came out, are in danger of being joined by new problems
when Leopard arrives!

Well the issue isn't the video codec its the audio. I could select
h264 if I wanted to but I still wouldnt be able to select AAC audio
from the QT export options in any windows app other than QT Pro.

As I understand it, the issue isn't windows or windows apps, or 3vix
... its that apple for some reason doesnt expose all the export
options in the windows api (thus QT Pro is the only windows app that
can use QT Export with AAC Audio).
