Diva, I really did want to hear your answers to these quetions: I own a virtual agency and I have to negotiate with every artist regarding usage rights. These folks work hard to produce their work and I don't feel that it is right to take it without authorization.I am interested in this point - how difficult is it to negotiate such rights? Are there standard forms? What kinds of fees are typical, if there is such a thing as typical in this field? Is there a clearinghouse where I could go and say I want to use Song X for my videoblog, which has an average monthly circulation of n, which is distributed by so-and-so means... How much will that cost me? - and get a quick answer? I would expect such a service to include considerations such as the difference between using a song in its entirety with no other sound (so that there could be abuses such as people stripping out the soundtrack to put on their iPod without further payment), vs using only some proportion of a song, or using it as background music with other sound so that a clean recording could not be easily stripped out of the video. 1. bad audio, if you can't hear it, well damn I hope it doesn't have bad audio. 2. bad lighting, we'll have to resort to just listening. 3. bad compression- who's going to be able watch your prized work of art or agrregate it? I'm gonna pull a Verdi here and assert that there are no vlogging mistakes, I mean other than linking to the wrong video or something like that. Everything else is just counter-intuitive to building a certain audience, but that doesn't mean it's a mistake. Make what you want, how you want, but if you really want people to tune in, pay attention to the things that turn people off and be aware when you are doing these things... Don't think I have any. Anything that doesn't catch and keep my attention (very little - I just don't have time!), I don't watch. I only have one that I can think of right now. Filming a screen. Anyone here who does this: STOP NOW. It's annoying. Filmiing a CRT is really bad-- the frequency sync problem means you always get a band of grey going across the screen you're filming. And there is no excuse for it. It's not like screencasting software isn't cheap. Get some. Use it. For crying out loud, if you don't, you're just lazy. Filming an LCD is not much better-- it's blurry and blue.
