[Videolib] Event Announcement--Time Correction
Please note that this event is scheduled for the afternoon on June 13, not the morning as originally announced. Workshop: Innovation in the Library, UMBC: From Digital Depository to e-Publishers Aa Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL) Workshop George Washington University, Washington, DC, June 13, 2012, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Facilitated by UMBC Faculty and Librarians E-publishing is not merely the replication of print formats, but something entirely new for us to invent. We will explore the intersections of repositories, publishing, and the digital humanities, then brainstorm innovative models for publishing, peer-reviewing, distributing, and archiving inextricably digital works that cannot be published in print form. Discussion will range from the theoretical to the elements and design of platforms and tools from a cross- disciplinary approach. The workshop will be led by the core group of UMBC faculty and librarians who developed the initial concepts of the UMBC Digital Publishing Initiative. Participants from an array of fields are invited (publishers, IT professionals, kibrarians, scholar authors, policy makers). To register for this workshop, go to http://jcdl2012.info/registration. Workshop participants are encouraged to consider also attending an additional workshop related to digital publishing, Using CLIR/NITLE Anvil for e-Publication from University Libraries, University Presses, and Scholarly Societies. [Videolib] swank motion p. and other streaming
Dear Wisdom, Do any of you have a contract with Swank for digital campus? If so, would you mind replying to me directly. It seems we are having difficulties in terms of the technical part and providing the access via our catalog. So I would like to know how you went around. [Videolib] promoting digital video question
Our library recently purchased a subscription to Health and Healthcare in Video (Alexander Street Press). I am trying to decide how to best promote this to our users-given that this currently is very selective. My reluctance is because I am afraid our users will try to use only this resource for videos after promotion. So-what do other academic libraries do? Anything you regret doing? Thanks in advance. [Videolib] streaming rights for Truffaut's Shoot the Piano Player?
Does anyone know who I would contact for information on the rights? Re: [Videolib] streaming rights for Truffaut's Shoot the Piano Player?
It is currently available, along with a lot of Criterion films, on Hulu Plus. I sent a general inquiry about streaming to Jon Mulvaney of Criterion mulva...@criterion.com and he replied by referring me to Hulu Plus: Institutional streaming licenses are not available at this time. I do hope you will find helpful that many of our titles can be streamed on Hulu (http://www.hulu.com/criterion). Additionally anyone signing-up on Hulu Plus with a .edu email address will get their first month free of charge. I would assume that the instructor could use a subscription to show it in the classroom, but that students would have to buy a subscription to watch at home. This is not a bad deal for film majors. The trick is that not all Criterion films are available all the time. Maybe Hulu could guarantee that a particular one would be available for a particular term. Re: [Videolib] streaming rights for Truffaut's Shoot the Piano Player?
I'm curious. Using your personal subscription to Hulu, or Netflix, etc. to show something in class does not infringe copyright law? In this case, since one does not own the material, one has to follow the terms of use of the service. Since these services clearly say for personal use, I don't think a faculty can use it in class. Am I wrong? Re: [Videolib] streaming rights for Truffaut's Shoot the Piano Player?
It might infringe on CONTRACT law in that in you stated it was for personal use to obtain the service, I don't believe it would not infringe on copyright law since it is a legal copy being shown in a classroom ( as opposed to being streamed to a students computer directly by the university). However since the school seems to want streaming rights to show OUTSIDE the classroom i assume the idea would be to have them open their own HULU accounts and get it that way.
