Re: [Videolib] documentary films on radical social movements

2014-01-27 Thread Olivia Newman
Hi Matthew (and all),

Pragda has a few of documentaries that make a really valuable contribution to
this subject:

SPAIN IN CRISIS: A COLLECTIVE RESPONSE is a new DVD compilation that we
recently released that looks at the Spanish fiscal crisis with a focus on the
Indignados Movement otherwise known as 15M, which influenced popular
protest movements all over the world including the USA's own Occupy Wall Street.

CRONICA D'UNA MIRADA: CLANDESTINE FILMMAKING IN FRANCO'S SPAIN 196-1975 is an
award-winning six-part documentary series about the little-know history of a
clandestine group of anti-Franco filmmakers who put their art into the service
of a political movement, altering the course of Spanish history.

THE DEATH OF PINOCHET, while not specifically about a particular movement,
captures the reactions of both Pinochetists and leftist Chileans to the death
of Pinochet and illustrates the dictator's ongoing divisive influence on
today's Chile.

Feel free to contact me with any questions or for any further assistance!
Best,
Olivia

Hi All:

I was wondering what some of you have done when you have a documentary film in
your collection that becomes damaged due to scratches or unidentified gunk or
what preventative measures you've chosen. Recently one of our dvds stopped
while in use by a faculty member during a class.

Any suggestions/input to any of the following questions will be appreciated:

Do you have a machine in the library for resurfacing? I would love to hear
suggestions for equipment.
RTI DiskChek - does a good job

Do you use anything else in-house that works well with regard to scratches?
NO

Or do you send it out? If you do send it out would you mind mentioning a vendor
who you've had a good relationship with.
NO

Do you burn a copy of the dvd as backup when you first receive it to prevent it
from being unavailable if the dvd does stop working.
No way - copyright violation

Do you review a dvd that you receive in order to determine whether it is free
from scratches, defects, etc. by playing it as well as by reviewing the disc
itself?
No. We wait until a patron comes in and says it has a problem. We don't have
time to visually inspect every DVD we purchase.

Do you ask whoever is staffing the circulation desk to check for scratches when
a dvd is returned? And, if so, when do you determine as to whether there has
been permanent damage (this probably is not done at the point of return)?
No, We just wait until we receive a complaint and then determine whether it can
be cleaned, or if we need to purchase a replacement copy.

Again, any input would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Sheri

Re: [Videolib] documentary films on radical social movements

2014-01-27 Thread Elizabeth Stanley
Hello, Elizabeth McMahon,

Thanks for the shout out about Rachel Carson. Take a look at A Sense of
Wonder.

When pioneering environmentalist Rachel Carson published Silent Spring in 1962,
the backlash from her critics thrust her into the center of a political
maelstrom. Despite her private persona, her convictions about the risks posed
by chemical pesticides forced her into the role of controversial public figure.
A Sense of Wonder is an intimate and poignant portrait of Rachel Carson's
life as she emerges as America's most successful advocate for the natural
world. Starring Kaiulani Lee as Rachel Carson.

Hi Elizabeth! You reminded me of the incredible documentary Rachel Carson's
Silent Spring about the grandmother of the environmental rights moving, whose
book really pissed off the federal government. She was painted as a fringe
radical, but her legacy is long-lasting.
