[Videolib] Help securing rights

2014-04-07 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
Hello all,

I am working with a faculty on a film series. The films below are what she
would like to screen, and I'm having a heck of a time determining who to
contact for pricing. First, do any of you know and second, is there a simple
way of determining who has the rights? I know there is no 'one size fits all'
- but any tactics would be appreciated. A few of them I think I nailed, but
your input is welcome.

Thanks for your time.

The Syrian Bride, Kino Lorber, $349

Paradise NowWarner Independent Pictures?
(avail Swank Digital Campus, $$$)

Unveiled Wolfe Releasing?

Sleep Dealer SubCine (via Alex R) or
TransitMedia (for institutional DVD purchase, $295)

Children in No Man's Land New Day Films, $225

Would you recommend library purchasing Institutional DVD or trying to work out
a deal with vendors for a screening? Just curious. I guess it all depends on
how much cash we have.

Thanks again for any insight.

I think if you are fairly sure you only need to show the film once
(or during one short period) you should ask the distributors about
pricing for that. I think faculty needs to be flexible when films are
either unavailable for streaming or just too much that they consider
either another title or actually trying to get students to a LIVE
screening or checking it out of library or watching at library.

Dear Lorraine,

If it's a one-time use, often a negotiation with the distributor will
provide a lower rental fee -- especially if you talk with them on a
continued basis. Or even being conversational with them just once.

Edith Kramer of the Pacific Film Archive had a technique of just talking
for as long as it took to get the price she needed. She was a great
conversationalist AND she knew that sooner or later the booker would be
anxious to get to other bookings. Then again, there's only one Edith.

Lorraine,
I am confused. Do you want to show this at Athena? In that case
Tri-State could help. I mistakenly thought you wanted streaming
rights. IF you show them at Athena then you should START with
Tri-State but give them all the info you have re rights holders. As it
happens theaters do get much lower prices than schools in most cases.

[Videolib] Public Domain studio films?

2014-04-07 Thread Stanton, Kim
Hi all,

My library recently received a large donation of early studio films on VHS
format. The majority were official releases, but I have two hanging out that
came from one of those rare/vintage mail order video companies. The quality is
not so hot - they look like low end telecine transfers. I don't know the
copyright renewal status of either film, so I don't know if these are Public
Domain or not. I haven't been able to find copies for sale on Amazon, with a
quick Google search or listed in Worldcat - if these are legal PD copies and
super rare I'd like to keep them, despite the kind of crappy quality. Does
anyone have any info on the PD status of these particular titles or other
resources I could consult? Should I assume that most majors studios renewed
copyright on all their pre-1968 films or was it more case by case than that?

These are copyrighted films the rights holder (which in the case of
POINTED HEELS in Universal which ones Paramount films made between
1028-48) studios have not releases along with I would imagine tens of
thousands of others. The copies you have are bootlegs. I have seen
these titles online and at some of the film buff shows I go to so they
are not unique in any way just pirate copies of films the rights
holder has not released. There are studio films that are PD because
they were not renewed but this is very rare and it is safe to assume
anything made by a real studio after 1922 is copyrighted. One can do
copyright searches on titles like this but it is expensive and really
not necessary. The relatively small number of studio films that have
gone PD are generally known and very widely available ( Say SUDDENLY
or THE GENERAL)
In fact many lost films like LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT, 4 DEVILS and
whole lot of early sound Fox films are still copyrighted even if they
don't exist.

is not so hot - they look like low end telecine transfers. I don't know
the copyright renewal status of either film, so I don't know if these are
Public Domain or not. I haven't been able to find copies for sale on
Amazon, with a quick Google search or listed in Worldcat - if these are
legal PD copies and super rare I'd like to keep them, despite the kind of
crappy quality. Does anyone have any info on the PD status of these
particular titles or other resources I could consult? Should I assume that
most majors studios renewed copyright on all their pre-1968 films or was it
more case by case than that?

Hi Jessica,

Sorry to confuse all - I am looking to show these at the Athena Cinema in
Athens, 1x, in the Fall of 2014. So no streaming rights.
Thank all who responded. I will wait and see what Tri-State has to say on
dollar amount.

I still am curious on the best way to go about finding out who has rights to
films. Some of it I can figure out myself, but some titles...not sure how to
determine. I was curious if there was a 'good web site' for this type of info.

Again, thanks - and the Athens International Film Video Fest starts Friday!

Come on by, if you are around!
Best,

Lorraine,
I am confused. Do you want to show this at Athena? In that case Tri-State could
help. I mistakenly thought you wanted streaming rights. IF you show them at
Athena then you should START with Tri-State but give them all the info you have
re rights holders. As it happens theaters do get much lower prices than schools
in most cases.

Also, our art house Athena Cinema, works with Tri-State Theatre

 Thanks everyone,

 Dear Lorraine,

If it's a one-time use, often a negotiation with the distributor will
provide a lower rental fee -- especially if you talk with them on a
continued basis. Or even being conversational with them just once.

Edith Kramer of the Pacific Film Archive had a technique of just
talking for as long as it took to get the price she needed. She was a
great conversationalist AND she knew that sooner or later the booker
would be anxious to get to other bookings. Then again, there's only one Edith.

Well in your case you are really looking for theatrical rights holder.
IF the film was released theatrically than start with New York Times
review. To be fair most on your list are tricky but in the case of
Paradise Now you are better off asking Tri-State to go through Warner
Bros.

I have to say, it's expensive these days, but IMDB Pro has its moments --
especially since it includes the contact information for rights holders.
It's not entirely accurate, but if not in the Times or Variety, it's a
decent place to start.

And, wow, it must be the 40th Anniversary of the Athens Film Fest. I was
there for the second one, programmed numbers 6, 7 and 8 and was last there
for number 10. And yet, no statue... ;-)
