Um not just series. Growing number of documentaries are online only and I
strongly suspect that
feature films will follow  in the coming years. It sucks for librarians and
preservation but it does give rights holders/distributors total control for
logistical and legal reasons ( most streaming tends to have some kind of
contract involved).

Great question! Making a Murderer is hot right now, of course. I did figure out 
how to make a (fair use) clip from it (basically a screen capture video 
program) but as for the whole thing ... that remains to be seen!!

Ah the irony. Remember when Fox News sued Al Frankin over his book   L*ies
and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the
Right, *claiming
that they owned the copyright on their "fair and balanced" ( they
eventually withdrew it).

However this case does raise a number of issues that are not so simple.
There is a somewhat similar case that does not bode well for them. The fact
that something is on social media does not necessarily  deprive it of
copyright and "fair use' by major corporations even those involved in news
is in the eye of the jury/judge
