Can you check with your Registrar's office or personnel to see if they have
accepted her as a student?

This may be the case of an especially eager student who is totally
organized. Or not...

This has occasionally happened with me - especially for book requests, when
someone finds and utilizes our online request form. If I don't recognize the
name (hey, we're a small campus!) or if the email address isn't a Wabash.edu
one, I typically just email back, enquiring about the individual's relationship
to our campus community. Often, that's the end of it right there. Amusingly,
I've had a couple of women claim to be incoming freshmen. Wabash is all-male.

How aggravating. What's really a shame is that this is a good /
interesting / unique film. Our campus International Film Series
programmed this during the spring. But, if we didn't already have it in
the collection, this kind of dishonest marketing would make me not want
to order it on principle.

would check on requests for pricey items ( this one seems to be $300) even
if it comes from a legit student.

Re: [Videolib] email requesting dvd purchase possibly a fraud (Gretchen Lieb)

2015-05-14 Thread Gretchen Lieb
Hi everyone,

Thanks for the responses. A couple of things I could have added- I did
call our registrar and they suggested I call admissions to try to track
this email to an actual student, and I did consider emailing back asking
for a little more evidence to back up the identity of the requester. I
wrote to this list because I thought I'd probably get an email confirming
the spammy nature of the request (thanks, Maureen!), and hoped that I might
also be saving someone else who also has a zillion CHOICE slips to go
through by the end of the month taking those steps.

I get quite a few of these disguised requests for books, too, but I don't
think I've ever gotten one claiming to be an incoming freshman- I agree
that there's some evil genius behind using this ploy to explain their
non-institutional email address.

I'm glad to hear that this isn't a reflection of the quality of the film.
It sounds like an interesting subject, and my guess is that this is some
third party marketer who promised to shake up some sales, rather than the
filmmaker(s) themselves.

Thanks,
Gretchen
