[Videolib] ALA Filmmaker Series

2016-01-08 Thread Emily Lindin
Hi Video Librarians,

I am looking forward to meeting all the librarians coming along to ALA
Midwinter this year. I am pleased to be launching my film "UnSlut: A
Documentary Film" on Kanopy, as well as my new book, "UnSlut: A Diary and
Memoir" at the Houghton Mifflin booth.

I hope you can all come along to Kanopy's Exclusive Filmmaker Panel where I
will be talking about my new film, and the damaging and often fatal
consequences of 'slut' shaming and sexual bullying. I have been screening
UnSlut at colleges across the North America and have been overwhelmed and
excited by the huge response I'm receiving from students around the world.

The panel will be taking place on Saturday 9 January at 3pm, Room 204AB.
RSVP to eve...@kanopystreaming.com.

I will be joined on the panel by Lacey Schwartz, director and subject of
"Little White Lies," and Colin Goddard, survivor of the Virginia Tech
shooting who will be talking about his film "Living for 32".

I hope to see you tomorrow in Boston.

Kind regards,

Emily

Re: [Videolib] Promised Land

2016-01-08 Thread Deg Farrelly
Jeremy,

It does! But in terms of 108, is this information discoverable in a
"reasonable" search? (Note that 108 does not require an exhaustive search nor
does it require tracking down the copyright holder)

How would a librarian discover this information?

Of course one of the reasonable search tactics is to post a question to
VideoLib, and in this case the results are good. But apart from that approach,
would someone be otherwise able to find the necessary information for what I
assume is a manufacture in demand process.

[Videolib] "Living for 32: Searching for Solutions to Gun Violence" Filmmaker Panel

2016-01-08 Thread Colin Goddard
Hello Video Librarians,

My name is Colin Goddard. I am a survivor of the Virginia Tech mass-shooting in
2007, featured in the documentary "Living for 32: Searching for Solutions to
Gun Violence", and will be speaking at Kanopy's Exclusive Filmmaker Panel this
weekend. Earlier this week, I was invited to attend President Obama's
announcement of new Executive Actions and am looking forward to sharing what
these mean for campuses today.

I will also share some of the activity our not-for-profit, Everytown for Gun
Safety, is undertaking on college campuses around the country.

Meet me at the ALA event which is taking place on Saturday 9 January at 3pm,
Room 204AB. RSVP to eve...@kanopystreaming.com.

I will be joined on the panel by Emily Lindin, director "UnSlut" and Lacey
Schwarz, director of "Little White Lie".

Hope to see you tomorrow in Boston!

[Videolib] Looking for film distributor

2016-01-08 Thread Rhonda Pancoe
I'm looking for film distributor for screening license to use our DVD copy
of KIDS by Larry Clark. Does anyone have contact information for Shining
Excalibur Pictures or Guys Upstairs? Swank tells me they do not have this
film.

Re: [Videolib] Digital DVDs

2016-01-08 Thread Katie Aldrich/Northcentral Technical College
Hi Nicholle,

I've never encountered digital copies with DVDs, but my guess is that
there is a license tied to the digital copy. Licenses trump copyright
exceptions. So the license language would have to permit the use.

We often encounter a similar situation with books that include CD-ROMs or
an online access code. Unfortunately, we pay for those extra features &
have to discard them.

Licensed materials can be difficult to deal with as a library, so I'd be
interested to hear responses from any experts.

It would be fantastic if vendors offered a library-friendly version of
such products, even if it were a discount that excluded the "personal use
only" digital components.

Thanks!

Hi -
I'm wondering if public libraries will share what they do with the
digital copies of DVDs they receive with the physical DVDs and Blu-rays
they order. What's legal? What's feasible? For example, we've heard
that some libraries load them on to a Roku (or similar device) and allow
it to be checked out.
  Any comments are appreciated.
  Thanks,
