Re: Getting a IIsi up and going

2001-07-09 Thread Dana Collins

David,
In answer to another message -
the PRAM battery looks like a smallish squat AA battery, but only 1/2 the
length - yes, it looks like a battery! (not trying to be cute) - you won't
be able to see it inside the Mac until you take the cover off - I presume
you know this as you've replaced the HD - right behind the HD, dead center
between the HD and Floppy drive will be a black plastic holster, and inside
it is your battery in question.
Gently pry off one side of the black cover, then the other, then gently pry
out the battery ..
(a sidebar to all: your favorite tool for this feat - I'm a little leary of
putting a metal screwdriver inbetween a battery and a contact, even though
the contact is theoretically not on - I've fashioned a wooden screwdriver
out of a hardwood popsicle stick ttto use- perhaps I'm over cautious)
...out of the sleeve. On it will be a date to tell you how old it is
(shelf life =aver. of 10 years; performance life varies).
You can find a replacement at RadioShack ($10), at AppleWorks Users Group
(7.50) or at www.allelectronics.com ($1.50)
Hope this helps,
Dana
P.S. On the new Quantum HD you installed: sorry to mention the obvious, but
did you install a driver of any kind onto it? It will not mount until its
been initialized (formatted - you make no mention of this point)

2001-07-09 Thread Jim Arnott

Open up the case. Right in the center of the motherboard you'll see a
battery about the same diameter as a double A flashlight battery but
half as long. Probably purple. That is a 3.6v lithium cell and is
available from many list vendors or your local Radio Shack. It's in a
standard slip in holder but it has a 'cage' that clips over the top.
Take a small standard screwdriver and gently pry the ends away from the
holder and the 'cage' lifts off. Remove the battery noting polarity and
replace with a new one and I think that your problem will go away.

Getting a IIsi up and going

2001-07-09 Thread David Price

Trying to get a IIsi up and running. Reportedly, this computer has worked
before but only for word processing. After not using it for approximately
2 years, she tried to use it, but now gets a blinking question mark. What
should I do to fix this? I've looked at the manual, but still can't get it
to recognize the hard drive even after putting in a new Quantum hd. I have
put it in the Disk Tools disc, the install discs but the hard drive is not
recognized. Help!

One Bazillion and One Dollars

2001-07-09 Thread Galen Tatsuo Komatsu

ok, a little more on this. In addition to the original picture I
put up:
http://www2.hawaii.edu/~gkomatsu/launch.jpg

Compare it with:
http://www2.hawaii.edu/~gkomatsu/launch2.jpg

The latter is from an 8.1 PPC, but the Launcher works identically. (As far
as I know, except for variable sized buttons and being able to drag and
drop directly to/from the Launcher window, the Launcher has pretty much
worked the same since it's introduction in System 7.5. I've set up
Launchers under 7.5 like this without problem.)

Notice the folder names have the dot preceeding them, this signals the
Launcher to create those group buttons you see at the top of the Launcher
window (launch2.jpg). However this didn't happen with the machine in
question (launch.jpg). I just got four item buttons for the folders.

...the items in the Launcher Items folder of launch2.jpg are folders (as
shown by the open Internet folder. The reason for the special icons and
the abbreviated names (ie "(Mara)") is because I had originally set things
up to use the X-Launch launcher, but that kept crashing my machine so I
went back to Apple's Launcher and never reverted the icons and such to
their old selves.

anyone know if a pc running linux will mangle the files or is it just
windows that wrecks things?

OK, you do of course realise that this is grounds for asking the following...

Get an SE/30.
Remove Mode32 if present.
Install more than 8MB RAM.
Put the IIsi ROM SIMM in it.
Reboot.
Report results to list. Be prepared to give full ROM part numbers on both
the ROM SIMM and the SE/30 mobo, as well as the SE/30 ROM SIMM that was
replaced.

Downloading 7.1

2001-07-09 Thread gamba

Hi Listers,

>From time to time various members of these lists mention that
OS 7.1 is not a free download.

It is.

If one includes English, Spanish, and German then there are 6 sites.
Throw in 7.1.1 in French and there are 7 sites.

Does anyody know where to download 7.5?

The 7.5.5 update is a free download from Apple.
However, before you jump up and grab it, you'll
want to do a check on all your software and
hardware to make sure it will all work with 7.5.5
or if there are software updates to fix problems.
Far as I know, the 7.5.3 to 7.5.5 update "broke"
more stuff than any other System or Mac OS update.
I think there used to be lists of software that
needed updates for 7.5.5, and more important,
software that companies decided to _not_ fix.

I think he's wanting to put subfolders in the Launcher
but it displays all the aliases in one window as if
they're not in folders.

Such a disk already exists at
 but it's 7.0.1.
You should be able to do it with 7.1 using the same hacks, which are:

1 Delete unneeded system resources by using

2 Replace the Finder with MiniSubstitute 1.7.1

Another trick that can be used is to increase the effective space of the
floppy by putting a ram disk application on the floppy and expanding
compressed applications into a ram disk. For instance, MicroNet Utility
7.2.7, which is 642K after removing some unneeded graphics with ResEdit,
can be compressed down to 196K.

No way to make more room, either, on a floppy. You ma y make a little
headway by making a minimal install onto a floppy, then remove all but the
system AND finder. See what you can fit there, then.

If the problem is getting the folder to go away, remove its alias from
the launcher. As I read you above, it seems you want the folder out of the
launcher?

Dear List:

I have an old version of Norton Utilities (version 2.0) from which I would
like to make an Emergency Floppy Disk. The two Emergency disks which I have
are for earlier models than the LCIII. I tried creating a boot disk with a
minimal System 7.1 on it, but I could include Norton Disk Doctor and Speed

create a boot disk and include these two applications on the same floppy?

One Bazillion Dollars to Whoever Figures This Out

2001-07-09 Thread Galen Tatsuo Komatsu

Asked this on the Quadlist to no response, so let's try it here.
Technically it's on a Quad630, but it's more about System 7.5.5, so let's
just imagine I'm working with an LCIII. ;^)

I installed Kanjitalk (Japanese localized OS) 7.5.3 with the
7.5.5 update, put in a bunch of games, apps and stuff and threw all my
aliases in the Launcher Items folder.

But I didn't want a huge jumble in one window, so I made four
folders for the different groups, and put the option-8 dot in front of
each folder's name. ...This isn't the first time I've used the Launcher,
so I'm pretty sure I knew what I was doing... And I called up the
Launcher's window.

One group, four buttons with folder icons on them. Each button
with the corresponding names under them, with the dot. Tried taking out
the *Apps folder I made (Imagine the * is the dot) since the Launcher
usually puts any aliases not in a group folder in one named
"Applications". Pretty much the same result. Buttons for all the
aliases, and three buttons with the remaining folders.

If the above sounds somehwat confusing, I put up a screen shot at:
http://www2.hawaii.edu/~gkomatsu/launch.jpg
The window in the back is the "Launcher Items" folder, In the
foreground is the Launcher window.

What went wrong? Given the general lack of settings involved with
the Launcher, I'm rather stumped.
