Its definately a Mac, flopped or not. The shape
of the floppy slot and the bulges around the
case feet are much easier to see on the actual
box. :)

The "artist" who did the box design would have
"airbrushed" out any identifying marks. Trying to
pass off an image of a Mac on a PC motherboard
box is ballsy enough without them thinking people
wouldn't notice "PowerPC" on it, even backwards. ;-)

The picture had been flopped. If you notice, the
on/off switch for the monitor is also on the left.
Highly unusual. It's a Mac I've never owned so I guess
that narrows it down. But I'll go look again.

4400's have the words "PowerPC" just to the left of the floppy slot as well as
ventilation holes below the leading edge of the machine on the front. I doubt
this pic is one of a 4400.

It's been around since at least 1975, since Chuck Peddle developed the 6501
(the 6502's lost predecessor) to be pin- and bus-compatible with the 6800.
This led to a successful lawsuit against MOS Technologies by Motorola for
copyright infringement, and made MOS Tech a tempting target for buyout (it
was quickly snapped up by Commodore).

The oldest book, on 6800's, I can find in my library is "6800

was around in the late 70's.

It's a little hazy now, but I think I built my first computer in

Yep, got it. Mostly because 4 is an extremely superstitiously unlucky
number in China (and probably other East Asian cultures as well). Thus
"4400" wouldn't have gone over well in the market there...

Good thing Apple had some folks on their feet in the Apple Asia marketing
division. GM once made the famous booboo of selling the Chevy Nova in
Mexico. Those of you who know Spanish will immediately remember that "no

Not as a Mac model. As others have mentioned, they existed as a CPU line

And you can still buy embedded controllers based on them as well. Of course,
I'm a 6502 advocate myself. ;-)

I had heard of 6800's as in processors (but only vaguely, and in
passing) but was more curious about the Powermac 6800/180's

Seems tho, that they may be just elusive little things :D

6800, 6801, 6802 and 6809 DID exist. I built a kit computer (SWTP) in
the late 70;s that used 6800 and later the 6809. It came out around
the time the Apple I was released. When I sold it, it had over 700K
of ram.

The 6800 family was made by Motorola. We (Engineering Measurements
Co.) sold thousands of traffic controllers using them.

Clock speed was in the range of 1 to 2 Mhz.

OK, here's a picture I took with a camera. Didn't
have a flatbed scanner handy. Its a bit hard to
see since they tinted it blue but that is definately
the same floppy slot as on the Beige G3 at work. :)

I imagine they are probably talking about 68000s (as opposed to PPCs), and
are just misplacing the decimal point when they say it. :)

One of my coworkers is building a PC with an
ASUS A7A266 motherboard. Visible as part of the box

I'd go with the superstition thing? I know 8's are a very lucky thing,
and I -think- 4 (or 44) is the unlucky number.

could have renamed it an 8800... :)

Did 6800's exist btw? I do tech support for state schools, and some have
referred to them often enough for me to wonder if some special
educational version existed, however they've all been replaced and seem
to only exist in memory now - been meaning to ask that, and thought you,
pickle, may have an idea there if anyone would :D

Be well,
Dana

Now for the real Mac-head trivia test:

*why* was it sold as the 7220 in the Asian market?
