What is Versa Term?
I found a box, unopened, of Versa Term software. Includes disks, manuals, etc. What uses are there for a terminal emulator? I seem to be kind of confused! (But what else is new?? ;) Tracy -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: What is Versa Term?
Holy geez, haven't heard that name since the days of bbs's and dial-up connecting on my blazing 1200 baud modem. In terms of the internet, the terminal emulation program was great for accessing bulletin board systems (especially the pirate ones). It acted as sort of the Remote Access program to hookup with a certain bbs as well as being an archaic text based browser. Before NCSA came out with the graphical web browser MOSAIC, Versa Term was one of the best ways to get on to a bbs and, if you were lucky enough to be on a bbs with an internet gateway, surf the web in text mode. Great little program. All this nostalgia brings tears to my eyes (sniffle)... Commands for dialing: AT --- tells the modem to get ready for a command (but just typing this will only result in an OK reply. You need to partner this with other commands. ATDT --- attention dial using TONE mode OR ATDP attention dial using PULSE mode. Again use this with the actual phone number to get online. Example: ATDT6145551212 this would dial in TONE mode the number 6145551212 You can also add ATDT*70,6145551212 in order to disable call waiting. By using a terminal program you can have direct manual control of your modem. I believe AT0 to 5 (?) set the volume of the modem. Hope that helped a bit. on 8/29/01 10:06 PM, the pickle at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: At 22:10 -0400 on 29/08/01, Tracy Keirns wrote: I found a box, unopened, of Versa Term software. You can telnet into a DSL router via serial cable to adjust settings or telnet into a Win2K box that has the telnet server running and have a bunch of fun. Of course, for once, M$ wasn't being dumb. The telnet server is _not_ turned on by default. Lots of things you can do with telnet. Download your e-mail, read usenet groups, play MUDs, MOOs and MUSHes. Some people have even revived the old style BBSes with telnet access instead of a bunch of dialup lines. Before the WWW there was Telnet! Wasn't Compuserve originally a telnet based service? Also check out Better Telnet, it's a free app. = The earth swarms with inhabitants. Why then should nature, which is fruitful to an excess here, be so very barren in the rest of the planets? Ohyeah, you can also use it to access your companie's IBM AS/400 mainframe to access their customer database... (Yup, we have an AS/400 where I work. For some reason most of us there really don't like working with it too well. We're getting a new GUI interface to replace the old terminal emulation software. Of course its most likely Windows only. I use the one and only Mac (Beige G3 Desktop) in the whole place.) = The earth swarms with inhabitants.
