Re: Turning VO on or off

2012-06-09 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, if the app switcher comes up, it means that it's only registering 2
presses of the home button. Make sure you are really doing 3. However if
that still doesn't work, connect your iPhone to a computer running
iTunes and choose the device section which lists your iPhone. Tab to the
Universal configuration button and enable Voice over from there. Then it
will be on. Now the triple home setup is definitely in the iPhone
Settings app inside General > Accessibility. I believe it's one of the
last options there. Do not go into Voice over since it's not there.

Re: Is Cobo books accessible and easy to use?

2012-06-09 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Kirsten,

I assume you mean Kobo books? Yes, it's very accessible and you shouldn't need
sighted help to set it up. You just need to know that when VO says "Icon Gear"
it means Settings.

I read with Kobo on my iPhone all the time.

Hey all. I found this app from a tweet earlier today. It's by the same
developer who makes the Who Unfollowed Me app which is planned on
getting better accessibility in the future. This one adds a signature to
outgoing texts. Note that you need to send the sms text message from the
app itself for the signatures to work. It also includes several
templates of quick responses.

Hi Joe,

I don't know how Calendar Sync is exactly supposed to work and while I
have a gmail address, I rarely use it for anything, but I understand
you can set up your gmail account on the iPhone using Exchange Active
Sync with your gmail address as your user name, you rpassword and
m.gmail.com as the server. Then you should be able to tell it to sync
mail, contacts and calendar and everything should work.

Re: iTunes Radio Streams Missing

2012-06-09 Thread Esther
Hi Judy,

This sounds bizarre. I'm at a loss as to what is going on with your Windows
iTunes installation, and haven't been able to find a good explanation after
trying a web search through the Apple Discussion forums.

Usually, the issues can be tracked down to local settings (e.g. the preference
files for an individual user account), or a problem with the application (less
likely, at least in Mac installations). I know that Windows runs an
iTunesHelper.exe program that handles access and internet interface issues, so
I suppose that could be problematic rather than iTunes itself. On my Mac, if I
turn off internet access, the radio stream entries still appear, although if I
try to open a stream I'll get a message there was a problem. Is it possible
that you have a Firewall up or else something that might be blocking the
iTunesHelper.exe access to streaming? I'm stumped about this and don't have any
good suggestions, since you need someone with good familiarity about how this
works on Windows. Sorry about that.

Only other thing I can think of is trying to restart your machine and see
whether that helps when you re-aceess iTunes.

Hope you get a solution, and sorry not to have been more help. You might be
able to save yourself some work by saving your iTunes library files in another
location. These are described in an Apple Knowledgebase document:
• What are the iTunes library files?
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660

Under Windows XP, the two files are stored as:
\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes
Library.itl

\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.xml

The second file, with the .xml extension, saves the location and playlists of
your entire current library. If you reinstall iTunes, you should be able to
import into iTunes using the File menu on the iTunes menu bar, and going to the
"Library" menu option, and then to the "Import Library…" submenu option. (This
is the location of the options on a Mac). It's actually possible to re-build
an iTunes library with that file. The .itl file is the version of the database
file that iTunes itself uses internally, and is an unreadable binary format
file that includes other date stamps, while the .xml file is the version that
is readable by other programs. You would only import the .xml file, if all
your music, etc. folders were kept in the same place.

I wish I could be of more help, but it's a long, long, time since I had to do
anything with iTunes under Windows.

Best,

Esther

Re: Internet Productivity Using Windows and iOS

2012-06-09 Thread David Chittenden
Hello,

It really depends on which paradigm you use.

If you must stick with the old paradigm that everything needs to be done using
the keyboard, the computer will be significantly faster. After all, the
interface is designed for keyboard control, and the esoteric keyboard commands
are well-trained and well-memorised by blind people who have been properly
trained.

However, in the new paradigm, where the touch-screen interface is utilised to
full advantage, and the blind take as much advantage of the two-dimensional
interface as the sighted do, access actually speeds up.

For instance, according to a study published in 2008, sighted people take 5
seconds on average to assess whether a website will be viable for the person's
current needs. For the blind, it takes between 10 seconds and 3 minutes just to
locate the pertinent information, if the web site is properly marked up. Using
the keyboard is a serial interface. Knowing which text, landmarks, headers,
Etc., if they are appropriately used, increases this speed, but the serial
nature of the interface means the blind will almost never be able to truly
understand how websites are structured. With the left, top, and right-hand
toolbars / link lists all starting above the text of theweb page, computer
screen readers with the serial interface are actually quite cumbersome, as the
iPhone's keyboard interface so aptly demonstrates.

That said, the relational two-dimensional touch-screen interface affords quite
good access when utilised as it was designed in the new paradigm.

When reading through email, ,i know where to touch on the display to start
reading of the actual message. I usually touch for the date/time announcement
and do a two-finger swipe down to have the message read. ,this is much faster
than using the keyboard, and I find it preferable to the computer because I
have precise control over what is spoken by where I touch, and I do not need to
memorise any esoteric commands.

For web pages, ,i can slide my finger to find where the main body of the text
is and then use a two-finger flick down to automatically read it. This means, I
can start reading the main body of the page without needing to memorise those
esoteric commands, and I don't need proper headings or landmarks to do so.

For this reason, I am strongly considering acquiring an iPad so I can have more
precise control / view of web pages. I am now a doctoral candidate, so I need
to do a lot of web research. Once I know where articles begin in database
search engines, I can go right to the article without worrying about whether
the author has added special blind-specific navigation commands.

Re: iTunes Radio Streams Missing

2012-06-09 Thread Esther
Hi Judy,

Best guess is that one of your Preferences files has gotten corrupted. iTunes
has two folders where preferences are saved under Windows XP. I would try
moving one of them to the Desktop, and then trying to see whether the problem
persists when you try to check your preference options. If nothing happens,
quit iTunes, then move it back and try moving the other one to the Desktop.
Start up iTunes and try checking your preference options again. This shouldn't
cause any problems. If iTunes starts up and doesn't find a preference file in
that location, it just creates a new one that sets your preferences to the way
they would appear if you started iTunes for the first time. I don't know which
one of the two determines your options for viewing the radio streams. If you
don't care about having to reconfigure your preferences from scratch, you don't
have to bother moving either file back to the original location.

The locations for the two preference folders are:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple
Computer\iTunes

Preference files get checked and possibly updated every time you open iTunes,
so it's possible that a bad entry was written at one time that is keeping the
option to show your radio streams from showing up.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi, Esther. I am using a Windows XP machine, service pack 3. I brought
up iTunes again and looked in the Preferences, and there is still no
option for radio streams. I have never seen this before. How do I
delete the Preferences folder in a Windows XP machine?

Thanks.

Re: iTunes Radio Streams Missing

2012-06-09 Thread Esther
Hi Judy,

Sorry, I just noticed that you're on the viphone list, so you're probably using
a Windows machine. Are you? I was giving you the shortcut sequences for a
Mac, because I was in the middle of answering a lot of Mac-specific questions.
You do need to access your iTunes preferences, but I think that may be an
option called "Preferences" under the "Edit" menu on the iTunes menu bar, and
you'll use different commands to check boxes, and exit the preferences menu.

If you can't find a "preferences" option on the menu bar under the "Edit" menu
that lets you check or uncheck "radio", write back and tell use what version of
Windows you're running. The fix is usually to delete the preference file and
start again, but the location depends on the version of the operating system
you're using. If you are using a Mac, and don't see an option for "radio" in
your iTunes preferences, can you tell use what version of the Mac operating
system you're running?

Sorry for the confusion.

Esther

Re: iTunes Radio Streams Missing

2012-06-09 Thread Esther
Hi Judy,

Your radio streams will only be displayed if they are checked in your iTunes
preferences. Use Command-Comma to bring up your iTunes preferences. On the
"General" tab, just after the text box for your Library name, you'll find
"Show:" followed by a list of checkboxes. Navigate to the box for "Radio" and
use VO-Space check this option, and any others that you may want to appear in
your sources list. I believe that entries such as radio, books, and iTunes U
are not checked by default. Close your preferences window with Command-W when
you're done.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

iTunes Radio Streams Missing

2012-06-09 Thread Judy Holloway
Hi. I have somehow managed to get rid of my radio streams in iTunes
and I would like to get them back. I've been into the Options and the
streams do not show up at all. I did not intentionally disable this
feature of iTunes. Since they no longer show up in my options at all,
how can I get the radio streams back?

Thanks so much.

Re: wireless connection

2012-06-09 Thread James Mannion
Glad you figured it out. That is really strange. One of those
instances where no amount of reasonable logic in trouble shooting
would have easily arrived at the answer. That is of course assuming
that setting back to the defaults didn't clear up something else that
was causing the problem. Maybe you narrowed it down though to custom
input = doesn't work and only whatever they gave you does.

RE: durable earphones for iPhone?

2012-06-09 Thread Cristobal
I redeemed some expiring Lufthansa miles for the Bose MIE2i Mobile Headset
and am quite happy with them. The earbud design is different and so that
they fit snuggly into your ear and stay securely. The sound quality is very
good and even though they're not necessarily "noise canceling", they more
than do the job with the comfortable fit. They also have a built in
microphone so you can make and receive calls and use Siri. All in all, a
very satisfying acquizition. The only way they could be better is if they
were bluetooth enabled. They are much more comfortable to use for longer
periods of time and stay in the ear than the headset that comes with the
iPhone.

This headset runs about $130.00. Like I said though, I got them with airline
miles. I don't know if I would walk around with them since they do a pretty
good job of blocking out external noises, but I mainly only use them in the
evening when listenning to my podcasts or audiobooks and my sighted wife's
watching TV or reading a book or something.

Hi Jared,

What I don't like about many of the earbud style headsets on the
market is the fact that most of the ones which claim to have good
sound quality are those which seal off your ear hence I can't hear
what is going on around me. For everyday use, phone calls, listening
to audio books etc. I really think the earbuds that come with any
iPhone or ipod Touch for $35 (replacement cost) are hard to beat. The
work extremely well, the remote works extremely well and I had more
people complaining about the sound quality with the $130 Jawbone ERA
bluetooth headset. I also rarely had problems with them breaking
unless I accidently dropped the earbud in the sink when it was hanging
around my neck, I wonder what you do to break them in 3 months, they
are not emergency shoe laces and also do not double as a dog leash...
just saying *smile*. By the way, if you have purchased the extended
Apple care, earphones are covered if they don't work because of bad
connection at the jack or the earbuds etc. Not sure if they replace
them every 3 months, but they did specifically tell me that when they
tried to talk me into buying the Apple Care plan. If you do find some
which allow you to still hear your environment and which you find are
of better quality don't forget to share it with the list.

Re: Replying to just the sender instead of a list

2012-06-09 Thread William Windels
Hello Ricardo,
When I tab on the detail-button, I receive 2 more buttons: create new contact
or put in a existing contact.
Also, I see the mail address but from there, I can't also send a new mail.
Also , when I do the double tab+hold, I don't have a option to make a new
contact.

But also about this topic: how can I do that on osx?
Workarounds I know: do reply to all and copy the from address to put it in a
new message or add the from to the address book and send from a new message...
But, is there not a option to chose reply_to_from or reply to reply_to?

I hope this is a little bit clear!

kind regards and a nice evening for you all...

I would highly recommend the Bose MIE2.

I have them on almost constantly and, they do not interfere with the sound

They just work great.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for durable earphones for the
iPhone, preferably earbuds? I've found that since I've gotten my iphone and
have been carying it around with headphones all the time I'm lucky if a pair
of earphones lasts me three months. The issue is usually with the cord
waring out, so the connections become flaky before completely giving out in
one or both ear pieces. If anyone knows of a good pair of headphones that
will last me a while I'd appreciate it.

Hi,

Sometimes you need to do a three-finger flick to get to the end of the
train before placing the domino. I think you flick up, but it's been a while
since I played, so I might not remember correctly. Try flicking down with 3
fingers if flicking up doesn't do the trick.

Anna

Hi.
Degrees does this. It only works in Canada though so I'm not sure if that's
what you wanted or not.

Hi,

I can't remember the name of the app I saw on viPhone a long time ago. It
was an accessible weather app that gives some kind of warning/alert if
there is severe or serious weather like tornados and such. Also, is it a
good app or does it give false alarms?

Thanks,
Christina C.
