RE: Calculator and recording/notetaking app on iPad

2014-07-17 Thread Maria Kristic
Hi Nimit,

For a scientific calculator (I am not aware of an accessible graphing
calculator for iOS unfortunately), I like Talking Scientific Calculator
because of its external keyboard support. You use + - * / % . and numbers
for the basic operations, ENTER (or Braille display equivalent, such as DOT
8 CHORD) for EQUALS; for more advanced functions, you keep pressing the
first letter of the function name until you get to the one you want, and
press SPACE to activate. For Braille displays, you turn off contracted
Braille to use the keyboard for entry. The calculator is self-voicing, but
you can also set the volume of that voice to 0% if you wish. Here's the
manual, if you wish to peruse before making a purchase decision (I believe
price is US$4.99 or so):

http://www.adamcroser.com.au/iPhone___iPad_Apps/Pages/Talking_Scientific_Cal
culator_files/Talking%20Scientific%20Calculator.pdf

RE text/audio note syncing app, have you tried AudioNote? I have been
meaning to buy and try it out myself on my iPhone (I do not have an iPad)
but have not gotten around to it so have no idea RE accessibility. It is
US$4.99 also I believe. Version 2.07.3 was fully accessible according to
Applevis, but the current version is 4.1.2. While I hope it is still
accessible, as I said, I have not tried it yet, so I cannot say. Perhaps,
someone else here has tried the latest version and can comment.

Good luck!

Regards,
Maria

Hello, all,
Can you guys please suggest of a calculator that can be used on an iPad? It
should be able to do basic functions and if possible, scientific and
graphing function? I prefer it being either free or less cost...
Similarly, can you guys suggest of an app that one can use on iPad for class
use that one can record lectures and possibly take notes along? And review
recording and notes later? I have noteability but it is a little
inaccessible at least to me. Can someone help with these suggestions?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your kind assistance and your time.

RE: Sonos Question about Non-Music Listening

2014-07-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Brent,

You could always get a Sonos Bridge for $59, sometimes they even have promos
and you get a free bridge if you buy one of the players. The bridge could
then sit right next to your router and all other players can then be
wireless. Well, OK, maybe right next or on top of your router might not be
that smart anyways because both the router and Sonos are wireless devices
and I'd keep at least 3 or 4 feet between to avoid direct interference.

I wonder why they don't have one with wifi for the Internet? It would be far
easier for places like mine because we had to put the modem/router in the
cabinet in the computer desk because the power cord wouldn't reach much
above, so one would have to run ethernet cable all around the room to where
I'd want the speaker. As for that 30-pin dock, with this Lario HD Music

Hi Brent and Allen,

Brent, the short answer is actually Yes, this can easily be done and all it
takes is one Airport Express which I believe costs around $80, maybe even
less in the States.

I have an Airport Express connected to one of my Sonos Connect Amp players
and I called it Sonos so when I tap on Airplay I see "iPhone", "Apple TV
Living Room" and "Sonos".
I furthermore have the system set up so that as soon as the Apple TV
delivers a signal to that Connect Amp which is actually in my kitchen, it
automatically plays in the Master Bedroom. If I want the Airplay stream to
play in other zones/rooms like the kitchen, bathroom, my Play 5 which I use
as a portable player either in my woodworking shop or on my deck then I just
group whichever other zones I want with the Master Bedroom.
This allows me to play any stream from any app on my Sonos system and
throughout the house.

As for setting up the Airport Express, you have to connect its network port
with the network port on the Sonos player and then also connect the 3.5mm
jack on the Airport Express to the RCA inputs on the Sonos. Then there is a
bit of configuration of the Airport Express which has to be set up in a
certain way. It's been I think 3 years since I set it up so I don't recall
the specifics, but if you Google how to setup an Airport Express you're your
Sonos system you can find an article on the Sonos website. The other option
is to call Sonos tech support and get them to walk you through the process
and if necessary they are more than happy to establish a remote support
session with you and do it for you.

Sonos used to make an iPhone dock with a 30-pin connector which was
wirelessly connected to the Sonos system just like any of the players and
all it needed was power. You could put it anywhere like on your night table,
the coffee table in the living room or whatever and put your iPhone in it
and it was just like using any speaker dock. I actually have one of these
but don't really use it any more since I guess I would have to buy an
adapter and so on. Have to put it up for sale one of these days on eBay or
something like that.

There is of course always the option to simply use an RCA cable and
physically connect your iPhone into the line in on a Sonos player. Then of
course Voiceover and everything would come through Sonos, but it works fine.
I have a cable sitting next to my laptop so if I ever want to sit in the
living room with my Logitech wireless keyboard and use the laptop I can just
plug it into the Connect in my office and send the audio anywhere and this
way I get Jaws and anything else playing.

The nice thing with Sonos is that it is so super flexible and expandable.
Keep in mind, however, that the Play 1 and I think also he Play 3 don't have
RCA inputs, you need a Play 5, Connect, Connect Amp or the Playbar for that.

Sieghard

Re: How easy is the app to use? was RE: KNFB Reader App

2014-07-17 Thread Brent Harding
Wow! How on earth would you be able to know where to aim to be able to get the
board read with it? I think being able to do mail with it would be nice because
these HP All in ones are slow at scanning as compared to the Epson scanner I
had before. I wonder if this would help with scanning the paycheck, so then I
could take the jpeg out and upload it to the deposit feature on my bank's site.
For whatever reason, even though sighted people say the scan is better than the
iPhone shot, the bank wants nothing to do with it for an unknown reason.

  Hi.

Of course the one for iOS is not out yet, but I personally found the old KNFB
reader a bit better at OCR than the OCR products for iOS that exist currently.

For instance, when we had it my partner and I used it to OCR and read the
menu that's up on the board at Mcdonalds. That's not been doable with stuff
like Prismo or Text Detective; at least it hasn't been possible for either of
us.

Another thing that we used to do with it back in the day, was use it to
quickly scan envelopes while standing at the mailbox. This was handy at the
time because like a sighted person would do, we could weed out the trash and
only take home what was important.

Now, if I want to scan the mail, using an OCR solution for the pc ends up
being the better deal. It would be nice to have a more reliable option.

The demos that I've listened to seem to indicate that the iOS app is going to
be equal to if not better than the old KNFB reader mobile solution.

All I can say, is I sure as hell hope so! This would make it well worth the
price imho.

If I can do all of those things efficiently like before, it would be very
handy. This is not to say that the current apps for iOS are bad, they're just
rather limiting by comparison, IMO.

  Hi.

I have a question about this app, and more specificly how it worked on other
devices in the past. I've heard it compared to other mainstream OCR apps on
the iPhone. I'd like to hear from KNFB users who have used this app on other
devices. How easy was it to use on these devices, and if you've used other OCR
apps on an iPhone, how does it compare with these apps? I think this will give
us a more accurate idea about how easy the app will be to use.

As for the cost of the app, in my opinion, I wouldn't have a problem paying
for it if it works as well as people say. Only problem I may have is I suspect
the app won't work on an iPhone 4, so I'll have to save up for an iPhone 6 to
use it. At least that's what I think the most logical thing to do.

Have a good day, and don't work too hard.

I do not have the Logitech, but a different brand.

The keyboard size is not a lot different than a netbook. The one thing to
remember, though, is that, unlike a netbook/notebook computer, the Ipad
cover is not hinged so that it will stay open on a table or on your lap. So,
you have to plan on opening it flat so that both the keyboard and Ipad are
lying on the surface or be able to remove the keyboard from the case and use
them separately. This is how mine works. The keyboard is a separate piece
that is held in the case by magnets. It does have a kickstand on the back to
prop the Ipad on a table, but does not work on your lap. I am not sure if
the Logitech keyboard can be removed from the case or not.

I would suggest either trying one in a store or purchasing from somewhere
with a good return policy. I actually have found with mine, the same as with
keyboards for the phone, I don't need the keyboard very often at all, but it
is with me all the time, and the added bulk and weight, no matter how
slight, are just not worth the trouble. So, for those few occasions I do
want a keyboard I would rather have something like the Apple Bluetooth, etc.
at hand over the more compact cover type.

The logitech cover with keyboard for ipad mini sounds very interesting.
Have you seen it? How big are the keys? Is it a full qwerty keyboard?

Somehow I can't imagine where the keys would be. Can you say any more about
the reliability and the way the keyboard works with vo commands?

Thanks

My cousin has it. the keys are similar to what you would find on a netbook

Calculator and recording/notetaking app on iPad

2014-07-17 Thread Nimit
Hello, all,
Can you guys please suggest of a calculator that can be used on an iPad? It
should be able to do basic functions and if possible, scientific and graphing
function? I prefer it being either free or less cost...
Similarly, can you guys suggest of an app that one can use on iPad for class
use that one can record lectures and possibly take notes along? And review
recording and notes later? I have noteability but it is a little inaccessible
at least to me. Can someone help with these suggestions?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your kind assistance and your time.

RE: Sonos multi-room Wireless music system was: Bluetooth speakers

2014-07-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Christina,

OK, I'll try to cut this down to the basics:

The Sonos app allows you to control your zone players as Sonos calls them. A
zone player can be any one of the following:

Portable/stand-alone devices: Play 1, Play 3 or Play 5 - basically boomboxes
of various sizes and price ranges

Connect: A small PreAmp which you have to hook up to an existing receiver or
you can use powered speakers.

Connect Amp: A stand-alone Sonos player with built-in 110 Watt amplifier and
you have to hook up normal stereo speakers with speaker wire.

OK, so basically you use the app to select on which player you want to play
music and this could be music in your Sonos library (you point the app to
where all your music is on your computer or network attached external hard
drive) or it could be music from any of the online sources which include
Spotify, Sirius, Rhapsody, Pandora, Slacker, Songsa and many more. Of course
if a service requires a subscription like Sirius, you have to be a
subscriber and enter your user name and password when you set up the service
in the Sonos app.

For example, I decide I want to play a Slacker stream in my bedroom. I open
the Sonos app, select Master Bedroom and then I am presented with a list of
music sources. I pick Slacker and just go on to find my station or stream
and in the end tap on "Play Now".
Now, let's assume my wife is in the living room and she wants to listen to
the album "Come on Over" by Shaniah Twain and she has her iPod Touch there.
She'll open the Sonos app and of course she can see what's playing in the
Master Bedroom if she looks at the list of players in our house. So now she
taps on Living Room, she then taps on "Music Library" then she can go by
Artist or Album and find the album or the artist she wants and play it.

Next I decide I am going into my woodworking shop downstairs where I have my
Play 5 and I want to listen to an Audible audio book I have on my iPhone.
Now here I have to use Airplay and in order to use Airplay on a Sonos system
you have to have an Airport Express connected to one of the players (doesn't
matter which one). In my case my Airport Express is connected to my Connect
Amp in the kitchen. So I now select my Play 5 in my shop and select "Line
In" as the music source. Here I now have 2 chouices, my laptop which I can
connect to another Sonos player in the office or my Airport Express in the
kitchen. I select the Airport Express and now I can start to play my book, I
tap on Airplay and select "Sonos" and bingo, my audio book is now playing in
my woodworking shop. Think of the Airport Express as just another music
sorce except that that in this case it's a hardware device and not a music
service or music coming from your computer's hard drive.

You can connect any device that has a 3.5mm or analogue RCA outputs to
either a Play 5, Connect or Connect Amp. This means a CD player, tape deck
or if you wanted your iPhone's headphone jack, but then of course Voiceover
would also be coming out of your Sonos player.

I find for my own digitized CD collection the best solution is a network
drive because this way it's always available even if your computer isn't
even turned on. I have most of my music on my iPhone as well, but I rarely
use it unless when I'm travelling because if I am at home and want to listen
to a CD I just use the Sonos app to play whatever I want from my network
attached hard drive. Like I said, you set this up once in Sonos and point to
where your music library is located just as you have to tell iTunes where
the music is and then you can set up the app to automatically index the
library once a day or so so that if you add new music it's going to be
available. If you let's say rip a CD and copy the content to the folder
where your music library is located then you won't see these songs in the
app until you index/update this which of course can be done right from the
app.

OK, I hope I answered most of your questions.

Sieghard

I was quite excited to read the info shared here. :) Thanks! I am somewhat
confused though. I do have a BOSE speaker with airplay. I love airplay

I had always been afraid to try bluetooth speakers because I don't want to

2014-07-17 Thread Amy Billman
Hi.
Of course the one for iOS is not out yet, but I personally found the old
KNFB reader a bit better at OCR than the OCR products for iOS that exist
currently.
For instance, when we had it my partner and I used it to OCR and read the
menu that's up on the board at Mcdonalds. That's not been doable with stuff
like Prismo or Text Detective; at least it hasn't been possible for either
of us.
The demos that I've listened to seem to indicate that the iOS app is going
to be equal to if not better than the old KNFB reader mobile solution.
All I can say, is I sure as hell hope so! This would make it well worth the
price imho.
If I can do all of those things efficiently like before, it would be very
handy. This is not to say that the current apps for iOS are bad, they're
just rather limiting by comparison, IMO.

Hi.

I have a question about this app, and more specificly how it worked on other
devices in the past. I've heard it compared to other mainstream OCR apps on
the iPhone. I'd like to hear from KNFB users who have used this app on
other devices. How easy was it to use on these devices, and if you've used
other OCR apps on an iPhone, how does it compare with these apps? I think
this will give us a more accurate idea about how easy the app will be to
use.

As for the cost of the app, in my opinion, I wouldn't have a problem paying
for it if it works as well as people say. Only problem I may have is I
suspect the app won't work on an iPhone 4, so I'll have to save up for an
iPhone 6 to use it. At least that's what I think the most logical thing to
do.

Have a good day, and don't work too hard.

Subject: Sonos Question about Non-Music Listening

I'm very interested in the Sonos audio system and like that it can be
daisychained throughout a large space and controlled with an iPhone app. All
the info I've read on their website talks about enjoying your music with the
Sonos system. I plan to also listen to audiobooks with it which means I
would be using Apps such as BARD mobile, audible, kindle, and voice dream
reader. Would I be able to listen to audiobooks throughout my house with
Sonos and these other Apps, would I have to use some trick to do this or
would it be doable through the Sonos app?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

RE: Sonos Question about Non-Music Listening

2014-07-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Regards,
Sieghard

The short answer is, not likely easily. They don't have airplay, and you
can't do NLS books from a network drive because it would have to be the
Sonos decoding them. As I understand, the app is pretty much a remote
control to direct the unit to stream down something, not sending audio out
from the phone to it. If these exist, you might be able to get an airplay to
line out device of some kind and plug it into a Sonos that has an input.
Right now, what I did was to get this Lario HD Music receiver that plugs
into my 30-pin Klipsch IGroove dock that brings airplay to it. The phone
would only play to one place at a time though.

Re: Sonos multi-room Wireless music system was: Bluetooth speakers

2014-07-17 Thread Christina C.
I was quite excited to read the info shared here. :) Thanks! I am somewhat
confused though. I do have a BOSE speaker with airplay. I love airplay because
VO does not go through the speakers but I only hear it on my iPhone. I had
always been afraid to try bluetooth speakers because I don't want to hear
voiceover through the speakers. Anyways, I have been in the market for speakers
because for whatever reason, I can't seem to keep my BOSe playing the music
without having to reboot it every so often. That's a real pain when I'm jamming
to music while showering or doing chores and my music stops playing. :( LOL!

Anyways, I was wondering what the benefit is to using the airport express to
make the system airPlay? Do I use the Sonos app on iOS to play music or do I
use the Sonos app to manage the Sonos system? I'm a bit confused as to how it
all works. I am a slacker Radio subscriber. Do I open the slacker app, then
play the music then go to the Sonos app to manage the speakers I want to use?
How would the process be different with airPlay through airport express? I'm
just trying to figure this all out so I can figure out what to buy. I apologize
if I seem really dense. :)

Also, if I use the Sonos app to play music and I do not use airplay with the
airport express, will VO play through the speakers? If I do use airport Express
do I still use the Sonos app? I think i am confused as to the what the Sonos
app is for. is it to play the music or is it to to manage which speakers I use?
I hope I am making sense.

So, can we hook this system up to our TV/cable/bluerayplayer and listen to a
movie while the kids listen to music upstairs? Or is this Sonos system not
really suited to hook up to the TV and is best for putting speakers in various
rooms and listening to music?

If I do purchase this system, I will definately contact them to make the Mac
app more accessible. It is great to know that they seem open to accessibility
since they improved the iOS app.

Thanks,
Christina

Re: TiVo app question

2014-07-17 Thread Brent Harding
You should be able to if Comcast offers cable cards. I'm not sure if it is a
requirement that cable companies have to offer the cards, but it seems like
many have the option, even though it may be buried. I know with Time Warner,
the option seems to be right there when you hit order or upgrade equipment in
their account once you log in. I've heard one will need sighted help because
their may be numbers in the menu that they would need to activate the card to
your Tivo.

maybe a macro could be made to make it a one-button toggle.

it is very rare that I need sighted assistance ever with my Tivo. Of course,
not being able to see you can't use all the features, but it is the best option

here before with the app, I can view my entire tV guide by time or channel,
search for any shows and set a season pass or record by episode, you can see
upcoming episodes, edit your season pass list, start programs playing on your

you can be on any Wifi network and connect to your Tivo to watch anything on

Kindle is the best option, in my opinion. There are some extra steps, because
you get dropped onto the Kindle Books site and you have to be sure your device
is registered with Amazon Kindle. The book is much more accessible in this
format, however. You can read these in the Kindle app. The overdrive app is not
terribly accessible, and Adobe Digital Editions isn't much better. I usually
just go for reading a library book with the Kindle app on the iDevice.

They have several formats from which to choose as a default. Has anyone had
experience with these, and if one may be best from this source?

I understand the formats to be:
ePub via Adobe
Open ePub (which they said was not real flexible)
Kindle(I was told this is a bit more cumbersome in terms of getting the book )
PDF (but this is not widely available for many books)

So, I’m guessing it’s ePub via Adobe or Kindle.

I have a Kindle account and read books with this app regularly, but the
librarian kind of scared me off saying it required more steps.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

RE: Need help pairing my Bluiz2

2014-07-17 Thread Ron Pelletier
Alex,

I followed your instructions. After the 5 seconds, although it did not say
pairing, I checked my phone and the device was there so I connected. Maybe
it does not say pairing at this point because the battery is not full. I'll
charge it and find out.

Thanks

Press and hold the power button (on the right, in front of the power port).
This turns the unit on and off, but when it turns on, keep holding the
button in. After five seconds or so, it will say "pairing". At that point,
pair the Bluez with your device in the usual way; you should not need a
passcode.

Re: Sonos Question about Non-Music Listening

2014-07-17 Thread Brent Harding

Overdrive app for library books - is there a preferred format for best reading experience?

2014-07-17 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

Our library offers Overdrive access to books.

They have several formats from which to choose as a default. Has anyone had
experience with these, and if one may be best from this source?

Kindle(I was told this is a bit more cumbersome in terms of getting the book )
PDF (but this is not widely available for many books)

So, I'm guessing it's ePub via Adobe or Kindle.

I have a Kindle account and read books with this app regularly, but the
librarian kind of scared me off saying it required more steps.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Re: Help, I think I broke my copy of Prizmo.

2014-07-17 Thread Julia

Hi Sandi and list.
Thank you for your helpful suggestions. Yes, I double-tap on quick
capture to take the picture, and then on take picture. You're probably
correct in that there isn't enough light to take a clear image of what
I'm scanning. I wasn't aware of this behavior of Prizmo, thanks for
pointing it out. I'll also try to close the majority of my apps before
scanning. Julia

Hi,
Just a thought: you double tap for the quick catcher, yes? Then, you double tap for the

trying this freehand, are you sure you have adequate lighting? Unfortunately, with
Prizmo, the Flash doesn't come on until the pictures taken, so, if the lighting is
inadequate the autofocusing function can't really kick in. In this regard, TextGrabber
is better because you can turn the flash on and it stays on all the time while the camera
is searching to take a picture. Also, I am finding that both of these OCR apps behave
better when I have less apps open in the app switcher.

Good luck,

Hi Julia,

I just opened the settings in Prizmo. I will list them here, so you can compare
what you have.

iCloud- Mine is off by choice. This is a toggle button.
General- Under themes, the default is neutral.
OCR- detect text orienntation is on.

Export image quality is high.
Accessibility- Under voice reading, you can change the reading speed, so this
is personal preference.

I also did a quick capture scan with prizmo. It gave the normal up, down, back, away,
right etc. to locate the text. I tapped on the "take picture" button and the
normal chimes were heard. Do you think it's time to contact support with Prizmo? They may
have something that they can suggest. HTH.

Hi list.

better results. I have no idea what I did, but now the app won't work properly
when I use quick capture to try to take a picture of the text. When I double
tap the button, it now says take picture heading, and sits there for a minute
or two, even when I hit cancel, the app still vibrates like it is detecting a
page. It does eventually sometimes take a picture, but not the speedy way it
did before. The settings I changed are, detect text orientation from off to
on,camera flash from auto to on, I set the recognition language to English, and
I changed the paper size to U.S. Letter. I have tried deleting the app and
downloading it again, but it looks like it remembered my previous settings. Is
there perhaps a way to set it back to default? I didn't see any option like
that.
Any suggestions about how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Julia

Re: TiVo app question

2014-07-17 Thread Brent Harding
I heard on the Tivo site that the Romeo Pro has the streaming built in. I was
thinking about getting one of these as opposed to the Time Warner DVR because
of being able to better control it with an app. Can you get into the settings
from the app, say to turn alternate audio on and off? The reason I couldn't
just have someone turn it on and leave it is because of channel 11. During
their programming that doesn't come from Fox, they play a continuous loop on
the SAP describing the feature and to return to main audio to hear the
programming. If you do have to do that from the remote, is it fairly easy to
toggle that setting? I heard that some of the remotes are programmable, so
maybe a macro could be made to make it a one-button toggle.

answer your question. No you do not need the stream to start shows playing on
your TV by the app. It's fantastic as I use the app for everything. You will
need some sighted assistance the first time you set the box up, but after that
it is very rare that I need sighted assistance ever with my Tivo. Of course,
not being able to see you can't use all the features, but it is the best option
on the market that I have found as the app is mostly accessible. I have posted
here before with the app, I can view my entire tV guide by time or channel,
search for any shows and set a season pass or record by episode, you can see
upcoming episodes, edit your season pass list, start programs playing on your
TV by the iPhone, it's pretty fantastic and I use it every day. With the Stream
you can be on any Wifi network and connect to your Tivo to watch anything on
it.

Hi jennifer. You can choose to search within a category such as the kindle
store. It a combo box right on the amazon site. Select kindle store when you
search for a kindle book and that's what you'll find.
To browse for things, go to the kindle store and then to kindle ebooks or
kindle books. Once you get there, things are very well laid out.
Hope that helps.

Re: Kindle bookstore?

2014-07-17 Thread Michael Feir
Hi jennifer. You can choose to search within a category such as the
kindle store. It a combo box right on the amazon site. Select kindle
store when you search for a kindle book and that's what you'll find.
To browse for things, go to the kindle store and then to kindle ebooks
or kindle books. Once you get there, things are very well laid out.
Hope that helps.

RE: App Switcher & Closing Running Apps

2014-07-17 Thread Scott Duck
Hi,
It has worked this way in all versions of IOS 7. This is the method that I
always use, rather I am closing one app or all of them. I find it to be
very quick and efficient.

Subject: App Switcher & Closing Running Apps

I'm using iOS 7.1.2 (worked this way in all versions of 7?); possibly in
prior iOS versions as well, but I just stumbled on this in 7.

When I focus on a running app, I'm informed to do a 3-finger swipe up to
close the app -- that works fine, but I've discovered a much more efficient
method to close an app if there are a number of open apps you may wish to
close at that time.

Here's how to close a number of running apps quite efficiently:
- press the HOME button twice to launch app switcher
- focus on any given app you wish to close
- execute a one-finger swipe down (should change action from default to
close)
- do a one-finger double tap to close this app
- to close additional apps, simply focus on said app and do the one-finger
double tap

It seems that the one-finger swipe down changes the action for all apps from
default (open) to close so do not tap an app you want to continue having
open.

Kindle bookstore?

Hi all. Is there an easier way to search for kindle books aside from trying to
get through all the other results on the amazon site? Is there a kindle book

RE: App Switcher & Closing Running Apps

2014-07-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Bill,

A few comments regarding closing apps. Yes, if you sswipe down (or up) the
action rotor is set to close and as you said it stays there so youcan double
tap on multiple apps without having to swipe down each time. However, there
is one exception and that is if you accidently touch on the very left where
it says "Home". If your rotor is set to close and you touch home it will
reset to "Activate Item" which is the default.

Now, as far as closing apps after you set the rotor to close. You can double
tap on apps as you explained, but if you have lots of apps to close you can
also touch in the middle of the screen as the screen displays 3 items, home
on the left and 2 apps, one in the middle and one on the right side of the
screen. All other open apps are there but off the screen.
Once you touch and hear the name of an app, you can just leave your finger
on it and split tap, this will close the app and the app next to it will
slide over and I guess you can say it will slide under your finger. Then you
just tap again with another finger and so on. You can pretty much tap with
your second finger as fast as you like without moving your first finger and
close 10 or 20 apps in no time at all.

Sieghard

- to close additional apps, simply focus on said app and do the one-finger
double tap

It seems that the one-finger swipe down changes the action for all apps from

default (open) to close so do not tap an app you want to continue having
open.

There is another way to close the apps in the app switcher. Hit the home
button twice to get into the app switcher, find the app you wish to close
and swipe up with 3 fingers. It will tell you it is closing. I find this
is the way I like the best.

2014-07-17 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi,

I only opened your post and did see others above it, but I was curious to
see if I could pitch in. If my response is redundant, please forgive me. I
am assuming that you are using iMap. The SMTP should have a port of 465 and
the outgoing mail is smtp.gmail.com. My husband has the same problem and one
of the tech people over at Apple stated to uninstall and install it again.
At this time, he hasn't gotten around to it. So, I guess I'll be the one to
get his secondary account up and running so he can send from it. HTH.

Listers,

One of my e-mail accounts which I set up on the iPhone reports "user name or

I have checked and rechecked all the details: username, outgoing server,
smtp server and all are correct. I deleted and reentered my password
several times. I deleted the particular account and set it up again and it
still does the same thing. I use the same account on my mac and all is well
there. The details on my mac for this account are exactly the same,
including the port number.

Has anyone else had problems of this kind?

Many thanks

fitting a picture in the wall paper.

2014-07-17 Thread Pablo Morales
Hi all.

I have a picture that is almost square. I am guessing, but I think that when
we select a picture as wall paper, iPhone place that picture stretched to
the size of the screen, right?

So in the case of the picture that I was saying, the picture will be
deformed?

Now if it is true, how we can do placing a picture and do not deform the
picture?

If it is not true, we are able to select what part of the picture we want to
show, I am saying it, because if the picture is square, and the screen of
the iPhone is a rectangle, the picture should be not complete. We can select
what part of the picture will be the wall paper?

How the wall paper works?

I am trying to understand, but I have no idea how it will shows the pictures
when they are not with the same proportion of size than the iPhone screen.

Thanks in advance.

Pablo

Creating ringtones from songs with iTunes

2014-07-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Wren and others,

Below is what I posted previously regarding how you can create ringtones
from songs in your iTunes library with iTunes. What follows is a short
summary regarding the steps and this is followed by a more detailed
description:

1. Find the song you want

2. Press Control+I for "Get Information", arrow to the options tab, tab to
start and end time and set end time to no more than 40 seconds.

3. Right click on your song and select "Create AAC Version"

4. Right click on the newly created 40 second version of the song and select
"Show in Windows Explorer"

5. Cut the song with Control+X, then go to your Tones or Ringtones folder in
iTunes Media which in turn in in i/tunes which in turn should be in your
Music or My Music folder.

6. Paste the song with Control+V

7. Go to the Tools menu of your Windows Explorer window, go to Folder
Options and the View tab, make sure "Hide extensions for known file types"

is Off.

8. Rename the .M4A extension to M4R.

9. Press enter on the newly renamed file to play it in iTunes, this
automatically adds it to your Tones library.

10. Connect your phone, make sure Sync All Tones is selected or if you sync
selected tones, make sure your new ringtone is checked, then sync your
phone.

That's it.

Below are the more detailed instructions. This is for Windows, not sure what
would be different if you use one of the inferior Mac computers *smile*.

Creating Ringtones from songs using iTune for Windows:

1. Find the song you want to make into a ringtone in your Music tab in
iTunes.

2. Right click and select "Get Info". Go to the "Options" tab, tab down to
"Start Time" and check it by pressing the space bar. Tab again and specify
the Start Time.

usually you start at the beginning of the song, i.e. 0:00, but if the song
starts very slow you may want to find a good spot a few seconds from the
beginning where you start the ringtone.

tab one more time to go to "Stop Time", check it also and tab to the edit
field, specify the Stop Time. This will ensure that iTunes will play the
song starting from the specified Start Time to the Stop Time.

Make sure that the stop time doesn't exceed the start time by more than 40
seconds which is the maximum length of a ringtone.

Click OK.

Press enter to play the song, it will only play the part of the song you
selected and you can see if it sounds good where it starts and stops.

If it stops in the middle of a note or word you can make it a few seconds
shorter to find a better place.

I usually set the stop time to 39 or 40 seconds and then make it shorter to
make it sound good.

The start time is displayed as 0:00 where the first 0 means 0 minutes, then
a ":" and then the 00 after that is for the seconds.

The stop time by default has the ending time of the song, for example

3:23.46 where the first 3 is the number of minutes, then the ":", then the
next 2 digits are the seconds and then a "." and the last number or numbers
is I guess maybe in one tenth of a second or even one hundreds, not quite
sure, but it's a very small increment.

Note:

Instead of right clicking on the song you can also use the Windows
Application Key (some call it the Context menu Key, it's on the right side
of the space bar next to the Control key). Even easier is to use the
keyboard shortcut "Control+I" and this should work in Windows XP as well as
Windows 7.

3. Right click, press the Context Menu Key or press Control+I when you are
on the selected song and select "Creat AAC Version from the context menu.

Almost immediately you will hear that tri-tone iTunes makes when it's
finished doing something.

This will create an AAC version of the song for only the section of the song
you specified.

This new short song will appear right underneath the original song in your
list of songs, so you just have to down arrow once to find it.

Press enter to play it and to make sure it is as you want it.

you can now go back to the original and, in the Options Tab, uncheck the
start and stop times so that it will play normally again.

Note:

If you don't see a "Create AAC Version option when you right click on the
song, go to "Edit", "Preferences" and in the General tab click on Import
settings, the shortcut is Alt+O.

Make sure that the AAC encoder settings are selected, if MP3 is selected as
the encoder you have to change it to AAC.

I also suggest you check this anyways and make sure you have "iTunes Plus"

selected for the quality to make sure you create a good quality ringtone.

4. Select the newly created short AAC version of the song in iTunes and
press CTRL+C for "copy". Open your iTunes folder (most likely in "My Music",
go to the "iTunes Media" folder and the "Tones" or "Ringtones" folder. Press

Control+V to paste the song into the Ringtones folder.

5. Right click on the file and select rename or press the shortcut which is
F2. Change the extention for the file which will be .M4A to .M4R. Confirm
that you want to renam

Yes, I would strongly advise sticking to the Apple products.

The ones I've seen that are Apple go for around $20. You can sometimes get
them online for less, and you can probably get a non-apple one for less.
I'd stick with the Apple products though.

Are they expensive or no?
Just curious.
I've never had to replace this form of cable that's why I'm asking.

Hello there.
My lightning cable for my IPhone 4s is slowly going out on me.
Are these cables replaceable?
If so where can I buy them and how much are they?
