Hi Jenny,

If you’re running the beta of iOS 9, expect bugs and inconsistencies with apps
as they work to iron out all the issues with the new OS. If the bard app is
something you use regularly, you can go back to 8.4, as long as you kept a
backup either in iCloud or iTunes.

Re: Having problems upgrading Pandora.

2015-07-11 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I am not familiar specifically with getting that checkbox to check in that
particular circumstance, but it might be the bug with VoiceOver in 8.x,
where the cursor does not track correctly. When you are at the checkbox, do
a three-finger swipe up or down, or three-finger swipe left or right, and
see if it says the page changes. If so, try changing it a page or two in
different directions, then attempt to check it. Not always, but most of the
time, the cursor can be made to align with the proper page, and it will
work.

RE: iOS9 Beta

2015-07-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Jenny,

You would have to go on a site like http://ipswdownloader.com and download the
full iOS firmware for your specific device. I haven't checked if 8.4 is up
there yet, but I assume by now it would be. Then you have to connect your phone
to iTunes, put it in recovery mode, press shift+restore and select the
downloaded .IPSW file. If you use Windows, the file most likely will download
as a file with a .zip extension, you have to enable showing file extension and
rename it with .ipsw. Hopefully this will downgrade you and if you have
archived an 8.4 backup you can restore from it. All of this is explained at
beta.apple.com along with the appropriate warnings for using beta software. I
had a pretty hard time downgrading and since my backup was from 8.3 and I went
straight to 8.4 right after its public release, I couldn't restore my backup
and had to start from scratch, set up as a new phone, setup all my email
accounts again, reinstall apps and all that fun stuff. It took me hours and I
learned a pretty good lesson regarding archiving backups from various versions,
not to try and restore a backup from a previous version to a newer version and
in general about the risks involved with using early-stage beta software. I ran
iOS 8 from Beta 1 last year, but while I had all the usual bugs I think all in
all my 5S was actually more stabil than it was with iOS 9 Beta 1 and 2.

I may try iOS 9 agan before the public release in mid September, but probably
I'll let another 2 or 3 betas go by and look into it again in early or mid
August.

Good luck,
Sieghard

RE: iOS 9

2015-07-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
As others have already pointed out, the public beta program is free. However,
especially the first public beta can often have many bugs and you really have
to be willing to put up with those. In this case, the third beta for developers
became the first public beta and I can assure you that there are issues with
various aspects of iOS. Apps may crash or not load at all, SIRI and Voiceover
may not function as expected and so on. Being on the cutting edge can be fun,
but it is not for the faint of heart. If you rely on your iOS device a lot and
don't have a secondary device like an iPad or iPod Touch you could use for the
beta I'd think twice. I have been enrolled in the developer program and have
beta tested at least the last 3 or so iOS versions, but in the case of iOS 9 I
downgraded back to 8.4 after Beta 2 came out and I believe I will wait until at
least one more beta version has been released before trying it again.

Sieghard

 Hi Canadian,

I received an email today and know BlindSquare is offer for free in
the month of July August! I cut and paste the content of the email
below:

 Hi Everyone,

As most of you will know, this summer Ontario is hosting the Pan Am
and Para Pan Am Games, which are the largest multisport games Canada has
ever hosted. These events will only increase the flood of summer tourists
and visitors that Ontario sees every year. For those visitors to our
province who are blind or partially sighted, independent and safe
navigation can be a real challenge. This is why CNIB is proud to announce
that BlindSquare, a navigation app that won our Winston Gordon Award for
Accessibility, is being offered free of charge to all for the months of
July and August.

BlindSquare is the world’s most popular accessible GPS-app
developed for individuals who are blind or partially sighted. It
describes the environment, announces points of interest and street
intersections as its user travels or plans future journeys. It’s been
programmed with points of interest -- hotels, restaurants, Pan Am and
Para Pan Am Games venues, festival locations and more. Users with vision
loss can rely on BlindSquare to help them safely and independently
navigate the Greater Toronto Area (Toronto and a 250 km radius) during
their visit. Sighted users who are visitors to the GTA can also benefit
from its clear and easy-to-use interface. BlindSquare is available in 22
languages, thus positioning it as ideal for visitors to and participants
in the Pan Am and Para Pan Am Games, the largest multi-sport games Canada
has hosted.

BlindSquare - which is available exclusively through Apple’s App
Store uses GPS, the iPhone compass and FourSquare to deliver
infoormation verbally about what is around the user. The app can be used
to find the most popular eatery within a radius of interest, as well as
to find a specific venue. Users can shake the device for updates on where
they are and information about nearby intersections and venues.
BlindSquare also tracks progress towards a destination and can mark a
position, helping its user to find that spot again later.

To learn more about BlindSquare you can read our media release
here.

BlindSquare has created a video announcement you can watch here.
Please note: this video is not accessible.

To download BlindSquare, simply click on this link.

While BlindSquare normally retails for US$30, for July and August,
2015, CNIB and BlindSquare are pleased to offer it for free to any and
all interested users.

2015-07-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Ron,

I sort of agree that this article/announcement can very easily give the wrong
impression. Even at the end it says:

While BlindSquare normally retails for US$30, for July and August, 2015, CNIB
and BlindSquare are pleased to offer it for free to any and all interested
users.

This does not mention that it is restricted to the Toronto area and users who
attend the event, it states that Blindsquare normally costs $29.99 and is
free to all interested users in July and August. That obviously is not so and
even the price is incorrect because while it may cost $29.99 US, when I just
went to the Canadian app store it is listed for $34.99 due to the exchange
rate. The CNIB really should have done better on that.

Hi Sieghard,

I have to agree with you that CNIB did a bad job of advertising it. Maybe it
was clear to me because I had listened to the Blind Square podcast when the
developer said he was coming to Toronto to program the iBeacons in the CNIB
building. It was so clear that it was an agreement between him and CNIB only.
It was clear to me that the promotion was only for the Pan Am games as they are

re-furbed. This is when I might get one, this autumn,
when I suppose the 6S/6S+ come out.

Be My Eyes, so I plan to upgrade either to a 6 or 6 plus. I am
reasonably aware of the pros and cons of each, but I am writing to

RE: BlindSquare Navigation App - Free during July August, 2015

2015-07-11 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi,

To me its not false advertising at all because, although it was a bit
confusing, I clearly understood that it would be free to use only in the area
of the Pan Am games. I never got the impression that the app was free to use
all over the world. Wait and see when Blind Square starts having its support
for iBeacon more popular. People will be happy to pay the 29 bucks for it. It
should be installed at the CNIB shortly according to a podcast I watched.

 Hi Canadian,

I received an email today and know BlindSquare is offer for free in the
month of July August! I cut and paste the content of the email below:

 *** Begin Note ***

 Hi Everyone,

As most of you will know, this summer Ontario is hosting the Pan Am and Para
Pan Am Games, which are the largest multisport games Canada has ever hosted.
These events will only increase the flood of summer tourists and visitors
that Ontario sees every year. For those visitors to our province who are
blind or partially sighted, independent and safe navigation can be a real
challenge. This is why CNIB is proud to announce that BlindSquare, a
navigation app that won our Winston Gordon Award for Accessibility, is being
offered free of charge to all for the months of July and August.

BlindSquare is the world’s most popular accessible GPS-app developed for
individuals who are blind or partially sighted. It describes the
environment, announces points of interest and street intersections as its
user travels or plans future journeys. It’s been programmed with points of
interest -- hotels, restaurants, Pan Am and Para Pan Am Games venues,
festival locations and more. Users with vision loss can rely on BlindSquare
to help them safely and independently navigate the Greater Toronto Area
(Toronto and a 250 km radius) during their visit. Sighted users who are
visitors to the GTA can also benefit from its clear and easy-to-use
interface. BlindSquare is available in 22 languages, thus positioning it as
ideal for visitors to and participants in the Pan Am and Para Pan Am Games,
the largest multi-sport games Canada has hosted.

BlindSquare - which is available exclusively through Apple’s App Store –
uses GPS, the iPhone compass and FourSquare to deliver information verbally
about what is around the user. The app can be used to find the most popular
eatery within a radius of interest, as well as to find a specific venue.
Users can shake the device for updates on where they are and information
about nearby intersections and venues. BlindSquare also tracks progress
towards a destination and can mark a position, helping its user to find that
 spot again later.

To learn more about BlindSquare you can read our media release here.

BlindSquare has created a video announcement you can watch here. Please
note: this video is not accessible.

To download BlindSquare, simply click on this link.

While BlindSquare normally retails for US$30, for July and August, 2015,
CNIB and BlindSquare are pleased to offer it for free to any and all
 interested users.

First, is there somewhere I can get a pdf of the user guide? I tried googling

Second, is there a keyboard help mode so I can explore the keyboard and learn
which keys do what without actually performing the functions?

Last, the keyboard will fit nicely in my handbag for transporting, but it seems
like I might want some kind cover/case to protect it while it's in there. Any
suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi Jenny,

You would have to go on a site like http://ipswdownloader.com and download
the full iOS firmware for your specific device. I haven't checked if 8.4 is
up there yet, but I assume by now it would be. Then you have to connect your
phone to iTunes, put it in recovery mode, press shift+restore and select the
downloaded .IPSW file. If you use Windows, the file most likely will
download as a file with a .zip extension, you have to enable showing file
extension and rename it with .ipsw. Hopefully this will downgrade you and if
you have archived an 8.4 backup you can restore from it. All of this is
explained at beta.apple.com along with the appropriate warnings for using
beta software. I had a pretty hard time downgrading and since my backup was
from 8.3 and I went straight to 8.4 right after its public release, I
couldn't restore my backup and had to start from scratch, set up as a new
phone, setup all my email accounts again, reinstall apps and all that fun
stuff. It took me hours and I learned a pretty good lesson regarding
archiving backups from various versions, not to try and restore a backup
from a previous version to a newer version and in general about the risks
involved with using early-stage beta software. I ran iOS 8 from Beta 1 last
year, but while I had all the usual bugs I think all in all my 5S was
actually more stabil than it was with iOS 9 Beta 1 and 2.

I may try iOS 9 agan before the public release in mid September, but
probably I'll let another 2 or 3 betas go by and look into it again in early
or mid August.

Good luck,
Sieghard

RE: A Quick Question To iOS 9.0 Beta Testers

2015-07-11 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Daniel,

Thank you for your reply.

I had gleamed from some of the threads in this forum that iOS 9 Beta can be
installed over-the-air, however, I am not familiar with this method.

I am registered as a developer and, as such, I subsequently downloaded an .IPSW
file. This file can only be installed using iTunes.

I suspect that one can use the OTA method if one goes to the public beta site
in order to obtain the installation profile. This is just a guess, however.

I would much prefer to install OTA than to use iTunes.

Hello Sieghard,

Did you install iOS 9 Beta over-the-air or via iTunes? If you installed OTA,
from which website did you obtain the installation profile?

The maker of the Fopydo Scanning Stand for the Blind is working on a
simple attachment that will make scanning books easier and coupled
with this new feature that may be coming in the next KNFB Reader
update, it will be excellent, assuming he gets it to market.

If you are not familiar with the Fopydo stand, it is very simple, and
durable, and extremely portable and only $12.00 plus $3 shipping from

The attachment will hopefully be no more than $10.00. I’ve seen a

Requesting recommendations for an app to learn essential Spanish to aid when travelling, and a translation app

2015-07-11 Thread Sharon Ballantyne

Hi All,

I am being sent from Canada to a conference in Lima Peru next month. I will
have benefit of a translator for the conference proceedings.

I am only in Lima for a week but I would like to get some sense of being able
to communicate common courtesies and basic survival phrases. I am totally blind
so need it to be accessible with voice over, not reliant on any visual.

Also, what might you recommend for an English to Spanish translation web site
or app?

I have not yet sorted out if I will even be able to use my phone as Canada has
crazy cell charges and roaming charges that are even more crazy!

Thank-you for any recommendations.

Lastly, kind of unrelated, if anyone has travelled to Lima, I would love to
hear about experiences/advice which you could post me about privately.

Re: auto scanning of multiple pages, such as in a book, will soon be part of K nfb reader

2015-07-11 Thread Tara Prakash
Hi all. In the context of this thread, Richard Turner wrote to me off
list with the following information regarding the stand that can be
used with K-NFB reader. The relevant part is pasted below:
The maker of the Fopydo Scanning Stand for the Blind is working on a
simple attachment that will make scanning books easier and coupled
with this new feature that may be coming in the next KNFB Reader
update, it will be excellent, assuming he gets it to market.

If you are not familiar with the Fopydo stand, it is very simple, and
durable, and extremely portable and only $12.00 plus $3 shipping from
Amazon.

The attachment will hopefully be no more than $10.00. I’ve seen a
prototype of it.

they were selling the software that became redundant with the demise

Subject: Some questions about the amazon basics bluetooth keyboard

 Hi All,

I just got my amazon basics Bluetooth keyboard and I have a few
 questions
for anyone who has this keyboard.

First, is there somewhere I can get a pdf of the user guide? I tried
 googling but came up empty.

Second, is there a keyboard help mode so I can explore the keyboard and
learn which keys do what without actually performing the functions?

Last, the keyboard will fit nicely in my handbag for transporting, but
 it
seems like I might want some kind cover/case to protect it while it's
 in
 there. Any suggestions?

 Thanks!

Re: iOS9 Beta

2015-07-11 Thread Jennie Facer
I figured it out. All I had to do was to put the phone in recovery mode and 8.4
downloaded automatically. I didn't have to do anything witha a psw file. I did
have to set it up as a new phone and all that jazz though. You're right. It
taught me a lesson, too.

If you use Windows, the file most likely will download
as a file with a .zip extension, you have to enable showing file extension
and rename it with .ipsw. Hopefully this will downgrade you and if you have
archived an 8.4 backup you can restore from it. All of this is explained at
beta.apple.com along with the appropriate warnings for using beta software. I
had a pretty hard time downgrading and since my backup was from 8.3 and I
went straight to 8.4 right after its public release, I couldn't restore my
backup and had to start from scratch, set up as a new phone, setup all my
email accounts again, reinstall apps and all that fun stuff. It took me hours
and I learned a pretty good lesson regarding archiving backups from various
versions, not to try and restore a backup from a previous version to a newer
version and in general about the risks involved with using early-stage beta
software. I ran iOS 8 from Beta 1 last year, but while I had all the usual
bugs I think all in all my 5S was actually more stabil than it was with iOS 9
 Beta 1 and 2.

I may try iOS 9 agan before the public release in mid September, but probably
I'll let another 2 or 3 betas go by and look into it again in early or mid
 August.

 Good luck,
 Sieghard

Hello, I also would be interested in a PDF of this file. I just bought my
Amazon basics keyboard lesson two months ago I really do like it. I bought mine

Which PDF reader would be good to read this file on an iPhone? I have Kendall,

 Hi All,

I just got my amazon basics Bluetooth keyboard and I have a few questions for
 anyone who has this keyboard.

First, is there somewhere I can get a pdf of the user guide? I tried googling
 but came up empty.

Second, is there a keyboard help mode so I can explore the keyboard and learn
which keys do what without actually performing the functions?

Last, the keyboard will fit nicely in my handbag for transporting, but it
seems like I might want some kind cover/case to protect it while it's in
 there. Any suggestions?

 Thanks!

Re: auto scanning of multiple pages, such as in a book, will soon be part of K nfb reader

2015-07-11 Thread Tara Prakash
As about Kelley's statement regarding KNFB Jim
gashel said last year that the company had no interest in selling
anything physical that needed to be delivered through the mail. I
understand for their first two products they were precisely doing so.
K-NFB was happily sending their original Reader and nokia phones when
they were selling the software that became redundant with the demise
of nokia phones. So, may be Ghatial forgot to add his ifs and buts
when he made this claim. We may still have a stand sold by K-nfb

Re: Some questions about the amazon basics bluetooth keyboard

2015-07-11 Thread David Justice

That's interesting. I'm using an Amazon Basics keyboard to type this message.
VO plus K works just fine for me. There are four keys to the left of the Space
bar. Vo, the Control plus Option keys, are the second and third. I'm
wondering if either we don't have the same Amazon Basics keyboard, or if the OS
makes a difference -- I'm using iOS 7.X.

The Amazon keyboard is not my everyday Bt keyboard, but one of the nice things
about it is that the Control, Option, and Command keys are on both sides of the
Space bar.

  David Justice :)

Looks like for the first and second question you will have to depend
on the list. VO key plus K should turn on the help mode to describe
key combinations, but it has never worked for me on Amazon basic

As about the last question, you can switch the keyboard off and you
should not need any cover for it. You don't have to pair the keyboard
again when you turn it back on.

read multiple page documents, such as book, using a stand. Jim ghatial
showed in the demo that all need you to do is flip pages. Scanning and
