from the app after you confirm your ride) and tell them that I am blind and
have a guide dog. For one thing when I'm at a mall or other large building it
is better to call anyways to make sure they come to the right door, yes, the
GPS will give the address/location, but if I'm at a big mall it won't do the
driver much good to know that I'm at such and such mall. You may not be legally
obligated to let them know you have a dog, but I think there is nothing wrong
with telling them out of curtocy and I guess there is always a chance a driver
is truely allergic in which case it's better if they know in advance and can
decline the ride.
On another note I think I am going to not use Uber again for now anyways
because while I had good experiences with the individual drivers, I do not at
all agree with their business practices and right now it looks like they may
face a real existential thread so until they decide to get their act together
I'll go back to taking a taxi. I know it is easier to boycott them if you
rarely need to use them anyways and for others this may not be an option, but I
only get to use Uber when I'm in Calgary and there is talk that they will be in
Vancouver by the end of this year, but in my small town our single cab company
where the owner drives along with 3 or 4 others she employs they can hardly
make a living and I'm sure Uber is a long time away from being here.

Hi all,
my mobile phone provider is now offering music streaming with no data charge
provided you use there nominated apps. The three apps are Spotify, Pandora and
I Heart radio.
Firstly there are free and paid apps for some of these and varying charges. I
am not able to find what you get for paid apps. Also what is the difference
with these companies?
Thanks for any advice.

RE: any good lightning head set recommendation

2017-03-17 Thread Alan Lemly
Ari,

I'd recommend you attach the approximately 2-inch 3.5mm female to lightning
male adapter that comes with the iPhone 7 to your headphones to make them in
effect lightning headphones. I'd then suggest getting the Belkin Lightning
Audio + Charge Rockstar adapter from the Apple Store for $39.95. It will give
you the capability to both charge and listen at the same time and all the
remote and volume buttons on the Apple earpods work with the Belkin adapter and
should work with this arrangement provided your headphones have the compatible
controls.

Have you been able to find any splitters that have a lightning port and a 3.5
mm headphone port? I have a pair of headphones that I like, but they aren't
lightning ones, because I have the 6S. I don't want to have to carry around two
adapters if I can help it. Also, I've heard somewhere that all these splitters
don't allow you to use the iPhone controller on your headphones, and that any
music control has to be performed from your phone. Have you found a splitter
that lets you control your music with your headphones?

Thanks,
Ari

Hi Mike,

I find it easier and more intuitive to use the File menu in iTunes and then
select the Add File or Add Folder option to add music.
Normally all your music is in c\users\mike\music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music. I
used your name as an example, not sure how you have your Windows set up, but I
assume you get what I mean.
Of course your music could be anywhere and it could even be on an external hard
drive or network attached drive, it could be in multiple folders in which case
you have to add each folder. I find it is easiest if it is at least all in one
folder.
You don't really have to worry too much abut having subfolders for genres,
artists and so on, iTunes does not use such a folder structure, it uses the ID3
tags from each song file to sort it. This of course means that if you have
ripped your music using an application which did not properly look up and tag
your songs that this will be a problem. Anyways, I assume your music is tagged
and that it is in the folder I used in my example above, so h ere is what you
do (it is super simple):
1. Open iTunes
2. Go to File and arrow down to "Add Folder to Library 3. A standard Open
dialogue appears, just browse to your folder and once it is highlighted tab to
"Selecte" and activate it.
That's it, depending on how much music you have in that folder you should hear
a triple tone anywhere after a second or two and maybe 8 or 10 seconds if your
collection is quite large.
As long as all the files in your music folder are MP3 or M4A which is the
iTunes compressed file format, they will all get added to your library.
As Robert explained, the shortcut for the music library is Control+1 and if you
tab a bunch of times you should find a list of all your music. There are other
settings to make browsing your music easier, but I don't have time to get into
those. If you like email me privately at siegh...@live.ca, I'd be happy to
setup a time on the weekend for a call and show you a bit how you can get the
most out of iTunes, it really is not so bad as many make it out to be.

Regards,
Sieghard

Why not just subscribe to iTunes Match for 24.99 a year? It allows up to
100 thousand songs, and you can access it from any of your devices, plus,
any play lists you create will show up on all your devices, best part, it’s
not on your device, you just stream it unless you down load a play list or
album for playing without a internet connection. JMO

Yeah, some people use logic and then they're always use ProTools. Usually what
is toward the universities is ProTools. There is also a group on WeChat that is
devoted to logic users. Both the logic group and pt access group are for
blind users.

Folks, The Getting together with Technology group, a bunch of visually impaired
and blind folks meet monthly in toronto.

Last night we hosted two of Uber’s finest spokes persons from their management
team.

It was a very informative evening with lots of great questions and positive
dialogue.

I’m posting the minutes of the meeting below in hopes that they will answer any
additional questions that list members may have.

As an Uberf client I will also be happy to answer any additional questions that
you may have.

By the way, the Uber service in Toronto is head and shoulders above any of the
Taxi Companies or at least that is my opinion.

Best regards….Reg Sullivan

Thanks as always to Christine Malec for preparing these awesome notes!

Jason opened the meeting. Tonight we have a representative from Uber to talk
with us. Next month’s meeting will be Chelsie talking about Siri tips and
tricks. In May or June we’re open for topic suggestions. You can send an email
to gtt.toro...@gmail.com with any suggestions.
We have Adam Blinnick, Director of Public Affairs for Uber Canada, and Brian
Crook, an operations manager for Uber accessibility. After they discuss Uber in
broad terms, Jason said he will give a demonstration of how to use the ap.

With raised hands, Adam saw that about 3/4 of those present have used Uber.
Uber was founded in 2009. It had relatively humble ambitions. Two people had
sold their businesses in San Francisco, where it’s hard to get a cab. Initially
it was framed as a luxury service, only “black cars” As the experiment got
going, it became clearer that transportation is an issue for many people.
Owning a car or taking taxies is expensive, and public transit can be
inconvenient. Also, a lot of car-owners are happy to turn their car into a
revenue-generating device. Uber is now in over 400 cities worldwide. The
flagship product is UberX. The ideal is, giving rides to your neighbours. Uber
has been able to increase transportation to parts of cities that were
previously inaccessible by transit, or if you didn’t have a car. Calling a taxi
was time-consuming and inconvenient, as you had to sit staring out the window.
Now, Uber cars often are available within 5 minutes. It also allows you to
track the car as it is coming to you. The lower cost of an Uber ride is
indisputable; it’s 30-40% cheaper than a conventional taxi, and Uber pool is
even cheaper.

The ap is free from the ap store. You download it, create a profile, then
connect a payment method to it, and you’re ready to go. It’s a seamless
experience to when the driver arrives, and you don’t have to pay when you exit
the car; the ride is charged to your payment method. Up-front pricing has now
been implemented; the price you see before you request the ride is the price
you’ll pay.

Safety is important in the design of the ap, and during the ride. Adam outlined
several policies and procedures implemented with safety in mind. Every driver
who wants to drive for Uber must complete a criminal background check. Also,
Uber has insurance which covers the rider. When you request a ride, you don’t
have to wait outside, as the ap lets you track the driver. This increases your
safety. When you request the ride, you get the driver’s name, license number,
and a description of their car. You also have an opportunity to contact the
driver via phone or text, to give more specific information about your pickup
location. During the trip, other safety features are in place. You’re always on
the map, being tracked by GPS.

RE: Questions about Uber

2017-03-17 Thread Reg Sullivan
Folks, the Uber team were clear about how they monitor communication between
drivers and clients because it is within the Uber App.
If you are refused with a service animal it will only be after you have
confirmation of the ride along with the driver's name, car type and license
plate number.
Uber operates under the same laws as any other drivers for hire including
taxis,
therefore, face the same consequences if refusing those of us with service
dogs.
Selecting Uber Assist will increase the likelihood of getting a more
experienced driver that may be more familiar with disabled clients.
Uber Assist is the same pricing as Uber X and the wait time is usually inside
10 minutes.

It is the expectation and goal of Uber to make their service available to all
clients, understanding that 100% compliance is what they are striving for.
Just like any other service that we use when accompanied by our guide Dogs, it
may well be an opportunity for us to educate.

RegardsReg

I have been denied 4 different times from drivers.
One of them absolutely yelled her head off at me stating I didn't give her a
heads up, then insisted I bring loads of blankets to cover her intire car
even though the dog was on the floor.
UBER will just talk to the drivers, but I have found out earlier this week
that UBER technically can't do anything to the drivers though UBER will say
they can disallow them from using the platform.
UBER has contacted me when I report it within 24-48 hours, but again, all
they will tell you is that they will talk to the driver.
If the driver charges you a cancelation fee, you will get a credit for that
fee towards your next ride.

BARD Mobile Errors

2017-03-17 Thread Tom Lange

Hi.
It's been quite a while since I've used BARD Mobile, so I decided to play
around with it again when one of my students downloaded it and took it for a
spin. We both had different problems. Even though we were on the same wi-fi,
her phone kept failing to connect to Bard's network. Mine, on the other hand,
connected just fine, but at the end of my book download I got an error saying
that there was insuffient storage for the book, which is utterly absurd. I'm
running a 256-gig iPhone 7 and, last I checked, I had 206 gigs of free
storage. Insufficient storage? Yeah, right. What's going on with their
network/servers and what's up with the insufficient storage issue? I've heard
that Bard has been real squirrely for some folks lately. Is this the kind of
stuff that people are talking about? Curious.

Tom

Re: any good lightning head set recommendation

2017-03-17 Thread englishrider91
Have you been able to find any splitters that have a lightning port and a 3.5
mm headphone port? I have a pair of headphones that I like, but they aren't
lightning ones, because I have the 6S. I don't want to have to carry around two
adapters if I can help it. Also, I've heard somewhere that all these splitters
don't allow you to use the iPhone controller on your headphones, and that any
music control has to be performed from your phone. Have you found a splitter
that lets you control your music with your headphones?

Thanks,
Ari

RE: Questions about Uber

2017-03-17 Thread Jeremy Gilley

Hey guys,

I am about to start using Uber. Question, how have you found a lot of
the drivers with guide dogs? I figured most of them are probably pretty
good but wanted to ask. How do you guys usually handle it?

Cheers,
Jed

We
have Adam Blinnick, Director of Public Affairs for Uber Canada, and Brian
Crook, an operations manager for Uber accessibility. After they discuss Uber in
broad terms, Jason said he will give a demonstration of how to use the ap.

With raised hands, Adam saw that about 3/4 of those present have used Uber.
Uber was founded in 2009. It had relatively humble ambitions. Two people had
sold their businesses in San Francisco, where it’s hard to get a cab. Initially
it was framed as a luxury service, only “black cars.” As the experiment got
going, it became clearer that transportation is an issue for many people.
You can also use “share my ride,” which allows
someone, such as a family member, to track where you are, they don’t need to
have the Uber ap in order to do this. You don’t need to have your credit card
or cash on you to take the ride. After the ride, you have access to a rating
system, which allows you to comment on anything about the driver that concerned
you. This allows Uber to track patterns in driver behaviour. There’s 24/7
support if you have an urgent concern about your ride, or left a personal item
in the car etc. There’s also a record of every trip you take. You get a copy,
and Uber keeps a copy, in case later follow-up is necessary.

Yes, an Airport Express is an Airplay device and it has a 3.5mm audio out jack
which you could connect to your receiver. I use one connected to one of my

Subject: Air Play from my PC with no air play ready receiver

Has anyone found out a solution for this problem?

In order to play iTunes music from my PC I need to have the TV on while using
the Apple TV 4, since they removed the audio out jack on that device. I know
there are products out there that can accomplish this. I want to be able to
use my PC for audio transmission to my Onkyo receiver. Are there any adaptors
that will allow this. I tried to use Audio Tracker, but it created it’s own
WIFI which my computer wouldn’t recognize. If I play from the iPhone it would
work but I don’t want to do that. Also the WIFI it created only had about a 30
foot range. Would Airport Express take care of this problem or some other
wireless adaptor? Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi. i use Uber all the time and absolutely love it. You can sign up for
an account right through the app no need to go to any websites. Just
wondering what do you mean right now they face a real threat? Like do you
see them completely going away? Here in Morgantown they are really really
popular with the college students.

RE: Questions about Uber

2017-03-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I have used Uber a few times in Calgary and a few drivers didn't seem thrilled,
but I think they were a bit afraid of my dog. I reassured them that he was very
friendly and it was OK, but I usually call the driver (easy to do from the app
after you confirm your ride) and tell them that I am blind and have a guide
dog. For one thing when I'm at a mall or other large building it is better to
call anyways to make sure they come to the right door, yes, the GPS will give
the address/location, but if I'm at a big mall it won't do the driver much good
to know that I'm at such and such mall. You may not be legally obligated to let
them know you have a dog, but I think there is nothing wrong with telling them
out of curtocy and I guess there is always a chance a driver is truely allergic
in which case it's better if they know in advance and can decline the ride.

RE: Questions about Uber

2017-03-17 Thread Terrianne Straw
Hi Jed,
The first time I tried to use Uber with a friend, the driver wanted to put my
guide dog in her trunk. There was a language barrier so I took other
transportation that day. Now I carry a piece of heavy vinyl or oil cloth that
is a little over 2 by 3 feet. When the driver pulls up I open the door and say
my dog never rides on the seat as I lay out my cover partly on and down the
front of my seat and on the floor before I get in. They are very appreciative.
 Good luck.

Terri

If you have one of the iPhones which supports 3D Touch (6S/6S Plus or 7/7 Plus)
you can just press down a bit harder on the Phone app icon and you get access

Keith,
I have used widgets for a variety of things, such as sports scores during the
nFL season, from news apps, from my favorites in my Phone app, and a couple of
different weather apps. I have two weather apps in widgets since both give me
good information but one does a short summary and one a more detailed summary.
I really like the Phone favorites widget, since it shows the first 4 numbers of
my 10 or 11 favorites, which are usually the ones that I call most often. I
don't have to open phone and go to favorites, I can just swipe left to right
with 3 fingers and go to the bottom of the screen. I have also put Music in my
widgets which allows me to access the most recent playlists that I've played.
At times I have had the Transit app widgets active, like the one that shows
nearby bus stops and the next departure time for each stop. Widget are awesome
an fun! However, I typically don't put a lot of widgets active since I want to
be able to quickly skim through the widgets by heading to see what's happening.

Good luck,
Wayne

Yes, an Airport Express is an Airplay device and it has a 3.5mm audio out jack

RE: Putting music on an iPhone

2017-03-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Sorry, Keith, but I'm so swamped with work right now that this will
unfortunately not happen. It's one thing to take a few minutes to type up a few
instructions or even to spend 20 minutes or half an hour with somebody on the
phone, but doing a proper iTunes Podcast would ake hours and hours and I just
can't do that right now.
I promised somebody who sells woodworking tools that I would do a
review/comparison on video of a digital caliper and angle cube which are
available in wired form and which can connect to an iPhone via a camera
connection cable and recently bluetooth versions of the same tools were
released. I had previously bought the wired versions not knowing that bluetooth
versions were about to be released and Lewis, the owner of a website called

Regards,
Sieghard

I appreciate your reply, but I've got a pc based Lenovo laptop and I've tried
to figure out how to work with ITunes using my JAWS 16.0; I give up.
Way too convoluted

So I just want to find the best deal on cloud storage, that's also a no problem
while using JAWS.

RE: Questions about Uber

I started using Uber a month ago. I have a guide dog, and I did not tell
Uber prior to transport that I have a guide dog because there was no place
for such notes in account set up, and legally, I don't have to tell Uber
that I have a guide dog. I have had nothing but excellent service with
Uber, and the drivers were very accepting of my guide dog.

Air Play from my PC with no air play ready receiver

2017-03-17 Thread Tom Rash
Has anyone found out a solution for this problem?

In order to play iTunes music from my PC I need to have the TV on while
using the Apple TV 4, since they removed the audio out jack on that device.
I know there are products out there that can accomplish this. I want to be
able to use my PC for audio transmission to my Onkyo receiver. Are there
any adaptors that will allow this. I tried to use Audio Tracker, but it
created it's own WIFI which my computer wouldn't recognize. If I play from
the iPhone it would work but I don't want to do that. Also the WIFI it
created only had about a 30 foot range. Would Airport Express take care of
this problem or some other wireless adaptor? Thanks for any suggestions.

JMO

Questions about Uber

2017-03-17 Thread Marissa Solaun

hello group,

So, I installed the Uber application onto my iPhone 6 I am using voice over and
everything went fine to set it up. My question is I see that you can add gift
cards as a form of payment for rides is that correct? If possible I would
rather like to use that instead of a credit and or debit card.

Has anyone encountered issues with the Uber application using voiceover and if
so what are they? I have not used Uber as of yet as I have been using para
transit to get around but may consider it that's why am asking.

Thank you for your help

Thanks for the Podcast, I am actually somewhat impressed by this and have
decided to buy the application in support of the developer, let's hope
they continue to support and maybe improve this.
Just as Tom who did the Podcast I have not yet gotten the WiFi
sync/transfer to work, it may take a sighted person since you have to
first connect the iPhone and click on a "gear icon" which does not seem to
be accessible. This is sort of a settings area where you first have to
enable the wireless connection. It does state in the FAQ that this feature
is still in beta, but then again I never found iTunes WiFi Sync to work
very reliably or, if it worked, to be very fast.

I have checked for coupon codes and while there maybe better ones out
there, I did find one, "WELOVE7LABS" which when you enter it during
checkout (without the quotation symbols of course) will give you 5% off,
it is only $2, but then again $2 is better than $0.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Considering how many people dislike iTunes I am surprised this
application has not been praised as the reinvention of the wheel with
Podcasts about it and so on. Before I plunk down $40 (I assume that is
US Dollars) or $60 which is the offer if you want free lifetime
upgrades I'd really like to hear a Podcast done about it. I have tried
too many of these all with limitations or accessibility issues.

Keith,
I have used widgets for a variety of things, such as sports scores
during the nFL season, from news apps, from my favorites in my Phone
app, and a couple of different weather apps. I have two weather apps
in widgets since both give me good information but one does a short
summary and one a more detailed summary. I really like the Phone
favorites widget, since it shows the first 4 numbers of my 10 or 11
favorites, which are usually the ones that I call most often. I don't
have to open phone and go to favorites, I can just swipe left to right
with 3 fingers and go to the bottom of the screen. I have also put
Music in my widgets which allows me to access the most recent
playlists that I've played. At times I have had the Transit app
widgets active, like the one that shows nearby bus stops and the next
departure time for each stop. Widget are awesome an fun! However, I
typically don't put a lot of widgets active since I want to be able to
quickly skim through the widgets by heading to see what's happening.

Good luck,
Wayne

Regards,
Sieghard

100 thousand songs, and you can access it from any of your devices, plus,
any play lists you create will show up on all your devices, best part, it’s

Re: How do you use Widgets within Notifications?

2017-03-17 Thread Wayne Merritt
Keith,
I have used widgets for a variety of things, such as sports scores
during the nFL season, from news apps, from my favorites in my Phone
app, and a couple of different weather apps.

Good luck,
Wayne

RE: Blind Square price?

2017-03-17 Thread R Van Lant
Wayne,
Thanks for mentioning the menus. I did not know that was a function in Blind
Square.

After getting disoriented on a walk with my new guide dog yesterday, I'm even
more eager to have Blind Square announcing intersections. Apple maps got me
home, but I still have no idea where I went astray yesterday and made a wrong
turn.

RE: Putting music on an iPhone

2017-03-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

1. Open iTunes
2. Go to File and arrow down to "Add Folder to Library
3. A standard Open dialogue appears, just browse to your folder and once it is
highlighted tab to "Selecte" and activate it.

Regards,
Sieghard

Simple home security

2017-03-17 Thread Feliciano Godoy
Hi everyone,
I would like to know if anyone has experience using the simple home security
app for iOS. I have reached out to the company and have gotten no response thus
far. I would like to know if the app is accessible with voiceover for example,
labeled buttons and other elements that can be adjusted. I intend to use this
app on the iPhone. Thank you,

any play lists you create will show up on all your devices, best part, it’s
not on your device, you just stream it unless you down load a play list or
album for playing without a internet connection. JMO

I did not do a podcast. Just a review where you fill out their form about
accessibility.
You would search for FTP client pro.

My wife has an iPad Mini II, so I down loaded KNFB Reader on it since I have
Family Sharing set up.
  It works fine.
Though, the results may not be as good given the camera quality.

Hi Vicki. I would have to recommend KNFB Reader. That app is normally
around $100 but well worth it. I use it every day to read mail. It even can
give field of view reports to help you capture the whole page. I haven't
regrettd that purchase for a moment and neither have any friends I've
recommended the app to.

RE: Ii

2017-03-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
As far as I know the News app is still only available inthe the US, England and
Australia. It was introduced in iOS 9 but even in iOS 10 it didn't even make it
to us in Canada, instead we got a silly widget.
If you set your region to United States you can also enjoy the News app and if
you are unlucky Homeland Security will find out and you'll be barred forever
from visiting Trumpland (or would that actually be lucky)? *smile*

Regards,
Sieghard
