Questions are as follows. Is it normal behavior for the Alexa app to route
audio away from the speaker and to the phones earpiece? Also, does one need to
use the app to configure the echo or can one use the PC to configure the echo?
Finally, is there a user list for these things? Thanks folks.

Re: Please explain what I can expect with an encrypted backup of an iPod which will be used to restore as a new iPhone

2017-07-11 Thread Agent086b
Hi,
I am no expert as I understand things as long as you make an encrypted backup
all settings will be saved. Although I don’t use it for other things turn on
key chain and that saves your wireless settings.
I can assure you that photos will be restored to the new phone. I have done
this before on my wife’s iPad. If I am wrong I am sure somebody will correct me.

Calibrating your Apple Watch for improved Workout and Activity accuracy

2017-07-11 Thread M. Taylor
Your Apple Watch uses the personal information that you provide to help
calculate metrics for your workouts and daily activity.

Workout app

You can calibrate your Apple Watch to improve the accuracy of your distance,
pace, and calorie measurements. Calibrating your watch can also help it
learn your fitness level and stride, which improves accuracy when GPS is
limited or unavailable.

Calibrate your Apple Watch

Before you try to calibrate your Apple Watch, check these settings on your
iPhone:
1.Tap Settings > Privacy > Location Services and make sure that Location
Services is turned on.
2.Tap Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services and make sure
that Motion Calibration & Distance is turned on.

After you check the settings, you can calibrate your Apple Watch:
1.While wearing your Apple Watch, go to a flat, open outdoor area that
offers good GPS reception and clear skies.
2.If you don't have an Apple Watch Series 2, bring your iPhone for GPS. Hold
your iPhone in your hand, or wear it on an armband or waistband.
3.Open the Workout app and choose an Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run.
4.Choose your goal or select Open. Tap Start.
5.Walk or run at your normal pace for about 20 minutes.

If you don't have time to finish the workout, you can complete 20 minutes
over multiple outdoor Workout sessions. If you work out at different speeds,
you should also calibrate for 20 minutes at each of the speeds that you walk
or run.

Whenever you walk or run outside using the above steps, your Apple Watch
continues to calibrate the accelerometer by learning your stride length at
different speeds. Calibration can also improve the accuracy of your calorie
calculations in the Workout app, and the calorie, distance, Move, and
Exercise calculations in the Activity app.

Reset your calibration data
If you want to reset your calibration data, open the Apple Watch app on your
iPhone. Tap the My Watch tab, then tap Privacy > Motion & Fitness > Reset
Calibration Data.

Update your personal information

Your personal information, such as your height, weight, gender, and age, is
one of the things your Apple Watch uses to calculate how many calories you
burn and more. To update your personal information:
1.Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
2.Tap the My Watch tab.
3.Tap Health > Edit.
4.Tap the item that you want to change and adjust it.
5.Tap Done.

Please explain what I can expect with an encrypted backup of an iPod which will be used to restore as a new iPhone

2017-07-11 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

I'm helping my daughter later this evening backing up her iPod as an encrypted
backup, and setting up a new iPhone from that backup.

What can I expect? I mean, she's freaking out that things will go missing or
awry.

I'm looking for what I can tell her before hand to expect when we finish the
planned restore from her encrupted backup.

What will be there. What wil not.

I think her apps will need to be downloaded once again, but they will all be
there.

And, I think she will need to download her music from the cloud again.

Will her photos be there?

Any of the above info, and whatever else others think may be good for me to
know beforehand, will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Keith

RE: finger print only working one out of five

Ed, does this Otter Box work with finger prints?

I know my previous Otter Box Defender did not work with finger prints

On the other hand, my new Otter Box Armor case does work with finger prints.

Like they say, an Otter Box is not an Otter Box.

Hi All,

On my friend’s 6s plus the finger print reader has only been working about one
out of five times. My friend said he has taken off the old finger prints and
made new ones three or four times with no better results. He has used different
finger for the finger prints. This just started happening on his 6s plus.
Before that it had been working fine. He has the raise to wake feature turn on.
He does have an Otterbox case on it. Any suggestions on how to solve the issue
with the finger print reader not working well to get into the iPhone would be
appreciated.

it sounds as though we may be able to input a signature and have it
placed on the document. If it is like this, it could be immensely useful!

If this was made accessible, just think of the possibilities!

No more begging sighted folks for help signing legal documents.

Also, iOS 11 will not support 32 bit apps. If this is something you care
about, don't upgrade until the developer updates the app.

it sounds as though we may be able to input a signature and have it placed
on the document. If it is like this, it could be immensely useful!

True Richard,
but think of this, we are not the only ones to find digitising text useful. so,
I suspect, even if it doesn't come out with this iOS, it may follow in fairly
rapid succession! also, and perhaps I am misunderstanding this, think of the
size of the screen of your phone: The image of, say, an A4 or foolscap piece of
paper, would be quite small. people would find it very difficult to write a
signature in the appropriate space on such a small image. nevertheless, mention
of the ability to add a signature is there. so, there must be a way to
transpose a signature from the screen which can be placed at the right size and
in the right place onto the image.

How to use iOS 11's Notes app as a document scanner - CNET

Apple has a habit of building features into iOS that eliminate the
need to install third-party apps for some users. For instance, with
the release of iOS 11, Apple is adding a document scanner, along with
the ability sign, share and save a scanned doc to your device.
Instead of launching the feature in a standalone app, Apple built it
into the Notes app. Here's what you need to know:
 Scan a document
Place the document(s) on a flat surface, in a well-lit area. Open the
Notes app, create a new note (or add the scans to a related Note, if you
 want).
Tap the "+" symbol at the bottom of the screen then select Scan Document.
A camera-like screen will show up, with a yellow box scanning and
looking for a document. It's best if you try to hold your iOS device
directly above the document, but it's not necessary. Apple designed
its document scanner to work from various angles.
Once the app recognizes a document it will automatically capture a
scan - you don't have to do anything other than wait. However, there
is a button to manually capture an image if it's struggling to find the
 document.
A small thumbnail of each page will be shown in the bottom-left
corner, and the scanner will remain open to continue scanning
multiple pages. When you're done, tap Save.
 Adjust the scan
There will be times when the Notes app can't quite make out the exact
corners of a document, so it will capture a scan but ask you to
adjust the corners. Drag each magnifying glass corner to the proper
 spot and then tap Save.
A helpful tip for using the adjustment tool is to not place your
 finger too close to the

I would not get too excited about this feature until we hear if this will be at
all VoiceOver accessible.
There is no mention of OCR at this point, just capturing images.

RE: Another question about gps apps

2017-07-11 Thread Mike Ulrich
That's the great thing about way points! Birds don't seem to like them! Nor
anything else that creepeth or crawleth abouts the earth!
Russian hackers? Now that's another whole different ball game!

I think you are confusing Ariadne in the Minotaurs Labyrinth with Hansel and
Gretel.

The problem with breadcrumbs is birds tend to eat them!

Blind Square is not strictly speaking a GPS app. It does not do
 turn-by-turn directions.

But, once you find the point of interest you want, Blind Square can
launch Google maps, Apple Maps, or several paid GPS apps.

If all you want is the turn-by-turn directions, Google Maps does a

Re: How to use iOS 11's Notes app as a document scanner - CNET

it sounds as though we may be able to input a signature and have it placed on
the document. If it is like this, it could be immensely useful!

Re: Another question about gps apps

2017-07-11 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
On the outward trip, you make way-points at key locations as you go, then to
return, you go back from point to point in the reverse
order you made them.

I believe there is an old legend about a hero searching out the beast in a
maze, and did use bread crumbs to mark his way out again.

How to use iOS 11's Notes app as a document scanner - CNET

Apple has a habit of building features into iOS that eliminate the need to
install third-party apps for some users. For instance, with the release of
iOS 11, Apple is adding a document scanner, along with the ability sign,
share and save a scanned doc to your device.
Instead of launching the feature in a standalone app, Apple built it into
the Notes app. Here's what you need to know:
Scan a document
Place the document(s) on a flat surface, in a well-lit area. Open the Notes
app, create a new note (or add the scans to a related Note, if you want).
Tap the "+" symbol at the bottom of the screen then select Scan Document.
A camera-like screen will show up, with a yellow box scanning and looking
for a document. It's best if you try to hold your iOS device directly above
the document, but it's not necessary. Apple designed its document scanner to
work from various angles.
Once the app recognizes a document it will automatically capture a scan -
you don't have to do anything other than wait. However, there is a button to
manually capture an image if it's struggling to find the document.
A small thumbnail of each page will be shown in the bottom-left corner, and
the scanner will remain open to continue scanning multiple pages. When
you're done, tap Save.
Adjust the scan
There will be times when the Notes app can't quite make out the exact
corners of a document, so it will capture a scan but ask you to adjust the
corners. Drag each magnifying glass corner to the proper spot and then tap
Save.
A helpful tip for using the adjustment tool is to not place your finger too
close to the corner. If you're in the general area, you can drag and adjust
as needed. Otherwise, you cover the magnifying glass and can't see your
adjustments.
Then what?
Adjust the color scheme of a scanned document, sign, highlight sections,
share or save the document using the iOS 11 share sheet.
Select the Markup as PDF option to covert the scan to a PDF, draw on it
using your finger on an iPhone or iPad, or use the Apple Pencil to mark it
up on an iPad Pro.
