Qualcomm bets on Chinese AI start-up SenseTime in bid to make mobile devices
smarter
By the South China Morning Post

Investment seen as part of a global trend towards AI-enabled chips for
mobile devices, with one in three smartphones in 2020 to have on-board AI
capability
Meng JingWednesday, 15 Nov 2017, 1:27PM

SenseTime Group, a Hong Kong-based artificial intelligence company
specialising in facial recognition, has secured an investment from US mobile
chip giant Qualcomm Technologies in what could be the world's biggest ever
fundraising by an AI start-up.

SenseTime said on Wednesday that Qualcomm has made an undisclosed strategic
investment in the three-year-old company as venture capitalists continue to
bet big on AI in China amid the country's national drive to make itself a
global leader in the technology by 2030.
The investment is expected to help Qualcomm maintain its leading position in
the mobile chip industry with an estimated 1 billion smartphones expected to
be shipped with on-device AI capabilities by 2020, a global trend initiated
by the Apple with the adoption of facial recognition technology in its
recently launched iPhone X.

SenseTime said the investment is part of its ongoing Series C funding round,
reported to be US$500 million, which would accelerate development with
Qualcomm of an "AI plus chip" as the "brains' of the next generation smart
devices.

The company, which has made its name in facial recognition, also provides
technology-based applications for autonomous driving and video analysis. The
firm counts mainland Chinese heavyweights such as China Mobile, HNA Group
and Huawei Technologies as its major clients.
Meet SenseTime, Hong Kong's first hi-tech unicorn that no one's heard of
SenseTime, which in July completed its US$410 million Series B round of
funding from a group of nearly 20 investors, is already a unicorn with a
valuation of around US$1.5 billion.
At the time that investment was the single largest financing round in AI
history until China's facial recognition start-up Megvii, also known as
Face++, completed a US $460 million round at the end of October.

According to data from market research firm Counterpoint Technology, one in
three smartphones to be shipped in 2020 will natively embed machine learning
and AI at the chip set level, a significant boost from a penetration rate of
3 per cent in 2017.
Hong Kong's SenseTime teams up with Qualcomm to extend AI into more devices
The initial driver for the rapid adoption of AI in smartphones is the use of
facial recognition technology by Apple in its recently launched iPhone X.

But with advanced AI capabilities, smartphones will be able to perform a
variety of tasks such as real-time translation and helping users take better
photos by intelligently identifying objects and adjusting camera settings
accordingly, said Peter Richardson, research director at Counterpoint
Technology.
"This is just the start. Machine learning will make smartphones understand
user behaviour in an unprecedented manner. Analysing user behaviour
patterns, devices will be able to make decisions and perform tasks that will
reduce physical interaction time between the user and the device," he said.

RE: looking for an app

2017-11-14 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Paula,

While Over Drive is VoiceOver accessible, I cannot recommend it,
wholeheartedly, to a totally blind person. This is because, while all of the
controls are properly labeled and function as expected, there is a great deal
of display bleed-through.

This means that using explore by touch, button labels that, while not currently
being displayed, will be read by VoiceOver. Unless one were intimately
familiar with the Over Drive app, one would find it extremely frustrating to
use without sighted assistance.

Now, were I to lose the remainder of my vision, assuming the Over Drive
interface remained the same as it is now, I could use the app but this is only
because I know the app, extremely well, as a partially sighted user.

Earlier this summer, just before undergoing major eye surgery where, I could
have quite easily lost the remainder of my vision, I turned the screen curtain
on for about a week; in preparation for a worst case scenario. During that
time, I used all of my favorite apps, including Over Drive with no problem, all
be it a little more slowly. In the case of Over Drive, however, I was
absolutely certain that my ability to use it stemmed from having an extremely
thorough knowledge of its display layout.

I believe the point of Overdrive is that as long as you are a member of any
public library you have access to a huge catalogue of titles not just what your

RE: looking for an app

2017-11-14 Thread M. Taylor
Sieghard,

As much as I wish your words were true, in the US, anyway, it's not quite that
simple.

One has access to only those books that a particular libraries system owns.
Large cities such as Los Angeles, for example, buy up to hundreds of copies of
one title so, in such a situation, because the actual library system is so big,
one only need join that one system.

However, some libraries choose to go it alone, Such as the San Diego public
Library while others choose to create their own systems, made up of a bunch of
tiny libraries, such as the Southern California library system which includes
tiny, tiny city libraries, which, when combined, make up a large repository of
books.

As long as one can prove residency in 1 state, say California, one can join,
for free, any and all of the library systems in that state. In the case of
California, there are over a hundred library systems, some public, some private.

Personally, I belong to 8 different libraries systems. As a result, I can get
virtually any audio book I want at almost any time because each system usually
buys multiple copies of titles. Every now and then, a new title will come out
that has a waiting list of over 2 hundred people but, in those instances, I
simply try another of my library systems and, usually, I can find the title,
immediately or the title will be available soon.

In some cases, I have recommended titles to my various libraries and, almost
always, they buy at least 1 copy, giving me first dibs on borrowing it.

Now, in smaller states, say, for example, Wisconsin, there may only be 1 or two
libraries systems. In those instances, given the budget of the state, titles
can be difficult to find or wait lists may be very, very long.

Despite all of the problems that come from living in a large metropolitan area,
there are some very definite advantages that go along with it, also.

By the way, The reason I don't belong to more libraries systems is because I'd
have to travel further to physically join them and one has to renew her/his
card every two years or so. One day, I'll take a trip over to San Fran Cisco
and join their system as I hear that it buys very cur tour titles that I may
wish to read, one day.

RE: A Question About Using the Belkin Rock Star Lightening Splitter

2017-11-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mark,

I should make it clear that the Belkin Valet which I once took a look at and
found too expensive is not a wireless charger for the phone. It is a dual
charger with an arm that comes up and out where you can put your Apple Watch on
and obviously that part is the typical magnetic wireless charger for the watch.
The phone charges via a port that sticks up like on any dock, there is a part
behind that once the phone is plugged onto the Lightning port it can rest
against. I know the Apple dock that is available definitely has a 3.5mm audio
output in the back and I could swear that this Belkin unit also had this.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hello Sieghard,

As a follow-up, I was in the Apple Store, today, (big smile) and looked at
their selection of wireless chargers. Unfortunately, they only had one Belkin
model, said model being a round puck shaped device. It was about the size of a
saucer. It did not have a 3.5mm jack.

I spoke to a couple of my friends, in the store, and they were all aware of the
model that you mentioned, earlier in this thread. Off the record, they did not
recommend the one that was in the store but suggested that I go online for more
selection options.

Hi Mark,

If you are referring to the charger I mentioned for the Apple Watch and iPhone
then it is the "Belkin Valet Charge Dock and Stand",, this link is on the
Belkin website for $129.95.
Interestingly enough I see no mention of the 3.5mm headphone jack which I could
have sworn I remember the Apple sales person at the Apple Store showing me,
maybe it’s such an insignificant feature that it’s not mentioned although one
would think they list it as a feature especially after Apple took away the
3.5mm headphone jack starting with the iPhone 7. Maybe next time you are at
your home away from home, Mark, (I mean the Apple Store), you can ask if they
have one there and check it out. I am pretty sure Apple’s Lightning iphone dock
has this 3.5mm connector in back.

I did Google it on Amazon.com and was surprised to see that they say "New (7)
from $89.42 & FREE shipping". Even at the current exchange rate that works out
to about $112 to $115 which is 30% less than what I have to shell out for it
here in Canada. However, when I clicked on this link I got nowhere which maybe
is because I am in Canada and Amazon.com knows that and can't ship it here, not
sure.
This is where you find it on Amazon.com.

When I checked on BestBuy.com I found another item and I’m not sure if that
replaces the Valet, it is the “Belkin Powerhouse Wall Charger” and it’s listed
at $99.95. It sounds very similar.

Lastly, here is another item for you, Mark, check it out on Amazon! *smile*

Take care,
Sieghard

Hi Keith,

I believe the point of Overdrive is that as long as you are a member of any
public library you have access to a huge catalogue of titles not just what your
particular library may physically have there.

Unfortunately for me, our library here usually only gets 1 of any audiobook,
and for popular books, one may have to wait weeks or even many months before
that one book becomes available, as the library can only loan out at any one
time the number of books they have purchased. So, if I want to read a new
release that is popular, and wasn't lucky enough to get in line fast enough,
I'm still using Audible. Keith

Hello Rebecca,

I use the Over Drive public Library app to see lists of books by either the
same author or by the book series. In fact, Over Drive will even tell you what
number, in the series, a book is, when possible.

I love this app. I was going to begin an Audible subscription but discovered
Over Drive, just in time. The thing is that Over Drive uses the exact same
titles as Audible.

This is all based on being a member of your local public library but other than
that, the sky is the limit.

As for a completely stand alone app that allows one to search for book series,
I would be interested in obtaining that, also.

RE: A Question About Using the Belkin Rock Star Lightening Splitter

2017-11-14 Thread M. Taylor

OK, baby Mark, your choice, but given the large choice of compatible charging
pads which all have been around for years I'd rather take a leap of faith than
baby steps especially since on Amazon you can buy two units of many models with
great ratings for the price of this ridiculously overpriced Belkin Rockstar
charger.
I once looked at the Belkin charging stand for the Apple Watch which is also a
Lightning dock for charging your iPhone and I think here in Canada it is $149
which I think is equally overpriced. I bought a nice stand that is very similar
on Amazon for $50 although on that one you have to insert your magnetic watch
charger into a pre-drilled hole, but that's not a big deal and in addition to
letting me charge my Apple Watch and my iPhone on the dock, it also has two USB
outputs in the back where you can plug in say a Micro USB cable for charging
most bluetooth earpieces or

Re: THE ROTOR - IS IT TIME TO THINK AGAIN?

Why not just go into the Rotor settings and remove the ones you don't use?

On 11/13/17 7:29 PM, 'Carol Pearson' via VIPhone wrote:

the middle. I know some people find this movement harder to accomplish
than others and, whilst I find it easy enough to do, I am finding that
this has become more tedious as the rotor is used now for so many
different options. I have also noticed that, because the rotor works
round in a list, though it doesn't actually do full circle, there are
times when an item that has been selected just does not show up on the
rotor because it's obviously just hit that part where it's not
visible, or something like that.

I am wondering if the time has come for some thought on the part of
users and technicians alike to take some time to convey things in a
different way, perhaps even with two rotors so that items can be
placed into two separate groups. I'd be interested in any experiences
and/or thoughts others have had concerning this.

For example, a lot of the rotor items needed for web searching aren't
necessarily needed when writing a text or an email, so perhaps two
groups with a way to jump easily between them could work.

Anyway, let's see how this grabs everyone - or not, as the case may be!

Re: looking for an app

2017-11-14 Thread Wayne Merritt
I love the GoodReads app! I was tracking my own progress up until late
last year, when I converted all of my books I've read from my own
records to GoodReads. Now if I start or finish a book, I immediately
go to GoodReads and update it through the app. One can also get
involved with reading groups on GoodReads, but I mostly use it to
track what I've read. You can create different bookshelves for
subjects, or keep everything on one shelf. There are a few areas of
the app which don't work as well, but most of it is accessible.
GoodReads is an app that makes great use of the VoiceOver rodor, since
the actions rodor is often available from the different screens. In
case anyone wants to look me up on GoodReads, my page is:

Hello Rebecca,

I use the Over Drive public Library app to see lists of books by either the
same author or by the book series. In fact, Over Drive will even tell you what
number, in the series, a book is, when possible.

I love this app. I was going to begin an Audible subscription but discovered
Over Drive, just in time. The thing is that Over Drive uses the exact same
titles as Audible.

This is all based on being a member of your local public library but other than
that, the sky is the limit.

As for a completely stand alone app that allows one to search for book series,
I would be interested in obtaining that, also.

Mark

I like fantasticfiction.com. It's not an app, but I added it to my home screen

Reader apps. You can search by author or book title. It lists books ina

The iPhone 8 does have a home button. It's the iPhone X that does not.

2017-11-14 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hi, the home button is still present, however it is controlled via touch
instead of physical/mechanical clicks and in its place you feel vibrations
thanks to its taptic engine. It's the iPhone 10 where there is no physical home
button at all.

Re: 4 Ways to Make Siri Smarter on Your iPhone, CNET

2017-11-14 Thread Deidre Muccio
Mark, I think it's great that you do remind us all that there could be speaker
issues or earphone issues. I hate earbuds so I never use my headpiece. At any
rate I've certainly had that trouble with other types of devices such as
humanwhere GPS and the Victor reader stream who's external speakers crapped
out each within the first year. I marveled at the iPhone is as forgiving it is
as it is given that I live inan old house with dust and a dog that sheds a
lot. That doesn't mean my house is a mess! So yes making sure you're not
mumbling or putting your finger over the speaker and things like that is just
as important to pay attention to.

I’m certainly with you on Neospeech James. I have him in voice dream reader,
and every time a new OS comes out, I keep hoping Apple will let me use him with
voiceover. I doubt it will ever happen. I’m also a huge fan of the ivona voice

RE: Hey Siri Question

I have a 6 S and it works without being plugged in.

Hi Richard,

I believe you are correct that it is controlled by the hardware. Here is why I
think you are correct. My wife has an iPhone 6 plus and the Hey Siri only
workds when she has it plugged in. I have a 6s plus and my iPhone works without
being plugged in. The reason I know this is because about a year or so ago I
tried to use Hey Siri on her iPhone and it would not work. So I went into
setting and made sure it was turned on. On my iPad 4 when I go into setting
under Siri it says under Hey Siri that this will work if plugged into power. It
does not say this on my iPhone 6s plus using the latest IOS.

Hey Siri without it being plugged in depends on the hardware, not the iOS.

I do not remember with which hardware, but I suspect it might be the 6s and
beyond.

I know my 5s has to be plugged in.

Also, I thought Siri was more verbal if VoiceOver was on no matter how you
invoked Siri.

Hey SIRI is simply a replacement for pressing and holding the home button.

I can’t remember if Hey SIRI became available when the phone is not plugged in
with iOS 10 or just now with iOS 11. I think it was iOS 10, before it only
worked when the phone was plugged into power.

It also used to respond universally to anybody saying Hey SIRI, now when you
turn on this feature you have to “train” SIRI by saying certain things.

I quite like this feature because I can have the phone sitting on my desk or on
the counter in the kitchen and without ever touching the phone I can say “Hey
SIRI, what is the time” or “Hey SIRI, set a timer for 10 minutes” just to give
two examples.

You can say “Hey SIRI” and wait for the beep and then ask your question or say
your request or you can simply say it all in one sentence, this does work very
well.

We have most of our lights at home equipped with Philipps Hue bulbs so I can
ask SIRI to turn on or off a particular light/room and now with our Schlage
Sense doorlock if I know somebody was going to stop buy I can just say “Hey
SIRI, open the front door” when whoever is coming rings the bell.

Since the noise of the motor for the lock is very noticeable most people sort
of assume that once they hear this it’s OK to come in.

Sieghard

Hi All,

I've never noticed, mainly because I don't say, Hey Siri, hardly ever, but when
you call on Siri with the, Hey Siri, voice command, is Siri supposed to reply
verbally along with sound, or with just the sound alert? Running the SE with

SIRI drives me crazy!

2017-11-14 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello all,

I am jumping in to this late in to the game.

But I basically just wanted to say, that SIRI is such a pain for me! She
rarely understands me. Well, maybe it's not that bad. But it's
definitely bad enough.

Like others have mentioned, she can't find contacts sometimes, and so
she will findd the number online. A lot of times when I ask her simple
questions, she won't have an answer at all, or sends me to the web.

Even though there are things about my Android that I don't care for,
Google does seem to recognize, and what I need her to do. Sometimes I
have to ask twice, but rarely.

I just thought I would share my thoughts.

Thank you,

Terri

Hi Deidre,

Very well said. I am totally fed up with not only asking Siri questions only to
get inaccurate info but asking to open apps only to be told I don't have an app
by that name. I understand nothing is perfect. Really, not being able to open
an app that I use all of the time? Not to mention, Apple doesn't mind charging
top dollar for their products. In return, I expect top dollar performance.

Have a great day,

RE: Hey Siri Question

2017-11-14 Thread Mr. Ed

I agree. I am confused about your statement, “I have also noticed that, because

the rotor has always moved fullcircle for me going all the way back to my

Hi Carool,

The rotor always has been context sensitive, e.g. items like links, form
fields, buttons and so on are only available when you are on a webpage or in an
email where these elements can be found. If you add typing mode then this only
shows up when you are in an edit field etc.

I don’t want to say it can’t be improved, but as far as I am concerned it works
pretty well and it’s pretty smart.

Subject: THE ROTOR - IS IT TIME TO THINK AGAIN?

Hi all,

I have been noticing that, with the increase of features and upgrades, so too
have there become more rotor actions that, perhaps, I might want to use, so I
have put them there but found that often the rotor needs a fair amount of
turning to get to a particular option right in the middle. I know some people
find this movement harder to accomplish than others and, whilst I find it easy
enough to do, I am finding that this has become more tedious as the rotor is
used now for so many different options. I have also noticed that, because the
rotor works round in a list, though it doesn't actually do full circle, there
are times when an item that has been selected just does not show up on the
rotor because it's obviously just hit that part where it's not visible, or
something like that.

I am wondering if the time has come for some thought on the part of users and
technicians alike to take some time to convey things in a different way,
perhaps even with two rotors so that items can be placed into two separate
groups. I'd be interested in any experiences and/or thoughts others have had
concerning this.

For example, a lot of the rotor items needed for web searching aren't
necessarily needed when writing a text or an email, so perhaps two groups with
a way to jump easily between them could work.

Anyway, let's see how this grabs everyone - or not, as the case may be!

Hey there,
No this is not a hardware malfunction issue. This is a discussion of what Siri

I don't see anything in the article that says you have to follow every
single suggestion. In fact, it says in the beginning just make the
changes that apply. I think this is a good resource and may make people
aware of some security settings they didn't previously know about. Plus,
not everyone uses the phone in the same way, and some of these privacy
settings may be important to some and not others. Also, just because I
can turn off some features to save some power, doesn't mean I'm going to
turn off everything. Again, there may be some things I don't need and
articles like this may make me aware of what I can turn off. Plus, if I
end up in a situation where I need to stretch my battery a bit then this
will come in handy. I'm not sure why people jump to the conclusion that
articles and collections of suggestions like this are saying we should
just put our phones in a drawer and not sue them. Follow the suggestions
you want to and let the rest decide what they want to do with their own
phones.

24 iOS 11 Privacy & Security Settings You Should Check Right Now by Jake
Peterson

Your iPhone has a lot of personal information contained within it, so of
course you want your device to be secure. You don't want that information
getting into the wrong hands - or any hands other than your own, for that
matter.
This guide breaks down the new privacy settings in iOS 11 that you should
check, along with settings that have existed since previous versions of
iOS.
Make sure to read this list carefully, and check any settings that apply
to
you. After all, you don't want your valuable data escaping the confines
of
your iPhone. Study this list, and you should be well armed against any
hackers, thieves, and nosy neighbors.

1.
Face ID (iPhone X Only)
Now, I'm sure there will be a heated argument about this one, but hear me
out. Apple claims that the chance of a false positive is literally one in
a
million with Face ID. Compare that to their claim of one in 50,000 for
Touch
ID, and Face ID sounds pretty secure.
But this article is about maximizing privacy. Not only is there a chance,
however small, that an intruder's face will let them unlock your phone,
there's a higher chance that your own face can be used against you.
Eliminate that risk altogether by disabling Face ID under Settings ->
Face
ID & Passcode.
2.
Temporarily Disable Face ID (iPhone X Only) If you must keep Face ID on,
you're not completely out of luck here. Apple has included a quick way to
disable Face ID temporarily, in case you know your physical security is
about to become compromised.
Check out our guide to find out more about this option, which leaves your
phone's security in the hands of your passcode.

3.
Passcode
The default iPhone passcode is six-digits long, although the four-digit
passcode is still very popular since it used to be iPhone's default.
Chances
are, your iPhone's passcode is one of these two options.
While there is nothing inherently wrong with using these passcode limits,
they aren't the most secure. A four-digit passcode has 10,000 possible
combinations, which, considering there are 85.8 million iPhone users in
the
United States alone, means there aren't enough unique combinations to go
around.
Increasing that number to six helps, since a six-digit combination has
one
million permutations. But now we're back to the one-in-a-million chance
that

If the book and the series is available in BARD, you can bring up the
whole series in BARD. Just click on the name of the book and then the
name of the series.

I've also done this just by doing a web search with something like
Google. I think Wikipedia is a good source for the books that make up a
series and the order they were published or the chronological order of
the stories.

Over Drive, just in time. The thing is that Over Drive uses the exact same

This is all based on being a member of your local public library but other than

As for a completely stand alone app that allows one to search for book series,
I would be interested in obtaining that, also.

RE: How to easily transfer iPhone music to a computer using WinX MediaTrans

2017-11-14 Thread 'Martin Maidment' via VIPhone
Hi

I have installed this and to me it doesn’t look accessable.

Cheers

Martin

I have yet to run across one of these utilities (and there are many) which is
accessible. I won’t bother with it, if somebody else wants to try it and
reports this one is accessible I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I ran across this article, and if this application is accessible, it could be a
boon for PC users who don’t like iTunes, or who just want a different way of
doing things. Good luck.

How to easily transfer iPhone music to a computer using WinX MediaTrans

It’s amazing to think how much information we entrust our phones with. From
photos of amazing life events, to specific songs that bring memories rushing
back, the sentimental value of our data is massive.

How worrying then, that we store it on a device that’s so prone to breaking.
Throughout its life a phone faces many dangers, from wet weather to drops onto
hard surfaces that can leave them completely inoperable.

You shouldn’t take that risk when it comes to your data, and regularly backing
it up is a routine you should absolutely have. Just a couple of minutes spent
every week will mean that if the worst should happen, you’ll still have access
to all those memories that you’ve spent years accumulating on your device.

iTunes works in a pinch if you want to keep a copy of your files, but for our
tutorial today we’re going to be using WinX MediaTrans
. It’s a very versatile piece of software
that allows you to easily backup your music (other file types such as photos,
videos, ringtones, voice memos and ebooks are also supported), and includes a
range of features to keep your files in good condition, including allowing you
to easily edit artist and album info.

So without further ado, here’s how to transfer your music to a computer.

1. Free Download WinX MediaTrans

There are two versions of WinX MediaTrans available, a free version and a
premium version. Upgrading to the premium version
  (lifetime licenses) allows you to
transfer unlimited files per day and also unlocks a host of other features such
as allowing you to remove DRM from tracks

. You'll also benefit from improved performance in lifetime free upgrade.

We’re going to use the free version of the program for this tutorial but you’re
free to upgrade at a later date if you want to use its expanded features. The
company offers a 30-day refund program if you’re not completely satisfied with
your purchase.

Head on over to the official website and
click the ‘Free Download’ link to get the installer, and then run it to get the
program installed on your PC.

2. Plug in your iPhone

3. Select 'Music Manager'

Once you’ve got the program up and running, select the ‘Music Manager’ option
from the main menu.

You’ll see a page prompting you to plug your iPhone into your computer, so do
so now. You’ll need to tell your phone to trust your computer to continue, and
you might have to enter your passcode to prove it’s you.

At this point the software will disable auto-sync on iTunes to prevent the
program from automatically erasing your data. Remember to re-enable this later
if it’s a feature that you use. You’ll also have to close iTunes at this point
(if you do not have iTunes on your computer, then this window won't pop up).

4. Transfer your music selectively or in a batch

Any music stored locally on your iPhone will be auto-detected and shown in the
MediaTrans window.

Check that the track details are all accurate (if not you can change them by
hovering over the file and clicking the ‘Edit Music’ button), and once you’re
ready it’s now a simple process to tick the boxes next to any songs you want to
transfer to your computer. Select ‘Export’ from the row of icons on the top,
and then click ‘Continue’ on the next screen.

Once the files are imported, their folder will automatically open up. By
default this will be contained within a ‘MediaTrans’ folder within your main
music folder, but you can change this option easily within the settings menu
(accessed from the top right of the window).

That’s all there is to it. Be sure to backup your music

I like Nuance Kate, too, but I
can't stand the way she goes all weird after a comma in
a sentence. She has this weird upward inflection that's
all on one note, and it drives me nuts. Other than that,
though, I like her. And Serena is decent, too.

 Thanks,
 Ari

My particular favorites in no particular order are Oliver,
Kate, Serena, Lee, Karen, Arthur, and American Siri mail.
However although I love these new voices I wish they would
open it up and let us add other text to speech engines such
 as the a cappella voices.
