Amazon Echo and Alexa

2017-11-15 Thread Ketan Kothari
Hi friends,

Sorry for cross-posting but I have problem with Alexa app. It is very
sluggish with IOS 11 on my IPhone 7. I am unable to add skills.

I need some help: Are there friends who are using Amazon Eco? Can
you please enlighten me on the best skills available? Also, how to
add skills and delete them.

What can it do other than reminder and alarm? I would appreciate any
help that I get.

Thank you all in advance.

With best wishes,

Ketan

A follow up to my earlier email about a disappearing keyboard in iOS

2017-11-15 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

So a few days ago, I had emailed the list regarding an issue I was having
with the keyboard disappearing in iOS. Be it in dictation or with in my
case, touch typing. It only started since upgrading in iOS 11.X.

I called Apple accessibility and explained my issue. I did think at first it
was perhaps a new feature with V 11.X, but as I found it to be so disruptive
with my usual way of interacting with the keyboard, I thought maybe it
really was a bug or maybe a setting I had overlooked that I could hopefully
change.

In any event, the Accessibility rep did confirm that it was a new behavior
in iOS 11. That if one engaged the dictation with the two finger double tap
in the edit field and did the same to stop dictation, the keyboard would
remain. Indeed, we tried this and at least while on the phone with him, the
keyboard maintained its presence.

I am quite nearly certain that the keyboard had disappeared on me when touch
typing and with the two finger double tap, but as I couldn’t reproduce it
with him at that time in that way… However, when double tapping the little
dictate button next to the spacebar made the keyboard disappear every single
time.

I expressed my frustration with this new behavior as with an iPhone at
least, having to use the two finger double tap to start/stop dictation
almost forces one to use the phone with two hands rather than just one
(usually the thumb for me) making the convenience of a one handed device
moot.

There are so many times in a day where one interacts with their iPhone. I
would guess in the hundreds if you take the time to consider all the texts,
queries, replies, status updates and so on and all the times you have to go
back and spell check. Not to mention if you have to pronounce words in
another language. Be it a name, nickname, city, etc. Plus all the other
scenarios of ambient noise or dictation simply being wrong. This new
step/feature was really becoming annoying and disruptive with its one extra
step now having to double tap on the keyboard button to bring it back every
single time if you didn’t use the two finger double tap to start/stop
dictation.

Anyway… as you can see, for me at least who uses my phones for personal as
well as for business purposes, it’s really impacted the way I use my phone.
I’m for now trying to remember to do the double finger tap for dictation,
but not only is muscle memory a hassle, but it’s just awkward and not as
convenient than just using the thumb of the hand that you’re holding the
phone in to start/stop dictation.

The Apple rep said that feedback is welcome and if it’s an issue they hear
enough about, it may be something they would consider for the future.
Improving the user experience, etc. Even a simple toggle to enable or
disable this behavior would be appreciated since I guess on an iPad, it may
be a more natural way to engage dictation.

So… if you’re like me where this one seemingly little change with the
keyboard on iOS 11 is making itself quite noticeable and not in a good way,
I would encourage you to reach out to Apple or the accessibility team to let
them know your frustrations as well.

Thanks,

Cristobal

Hello Everyone,

You know, I would like to be able to use my Apple Earpods headset on a
non-lightning enabled device such as a PC, my current MacBook Pro, and/or in
an automobile audio system.

In order to do this, I am searching for a female lightning to either a
3.5mm, male, Thunderbolt, male, and/or USB, male, adapter.

Try as I may, I cannot seem to locate any on the web.

I have gone to two different Apple Stores and no one in either of them are
aware of any such adapters.

They must, however, exist, right?

Remember, the key here is that the adapter must be a Lightning female to a
non-Lightning male device.

If you know from where I can purchase any or all of these three types of
adapters, please let me know.

Thank you,

Mark

iPhone X and 8 get faster wireless charging with iOS 11.2 - CNET

2017-11-15 Thread M. Taylor
CNET News - Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at 2:01 PM
iPhone X and 8 get faster wireless charging with iOS 11.2 - CNET

The new iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X all come with wireless charging.
James Martin/CNET
Apple's latest iOS update makes wireless charging on the iPhone 8, iPhone 8
Plus and iPhone X 50 percent faster.
Currently the three iPhones wirelessly charge at a rate of 5 watts, but the
iOS 11.2 update allows them to charge at a rate of 7.5w, which is a 50
percent increase. The charging update was spotted and tested out by
MacRumors.
Although wireless charging is new to the iPhone, it's been around on Android
devices for several years. iPhones use the Qi wireless charging standard,
which maxes out at a rate of 15w. Samsung's Galaxy Note 8, for example,
supports 15-watt fast wireless charging.
You won't need to buy a new charger to take advantage of faster speeds. The
Mophie and Belkin wireless chargers that Apple sells are already capable of
delivering 7.5w of power. Apple has said on the chargers' listings since
their releases that it will enable "fast wireless charging" with a later
software update -- it's likely that iOS 11.2 is that update.

Now Playing: Watch this: AirPower: Apple's charge-everything tech
1:07
Apple is also planning on releasing its own wireless charging mat, AirPower,
that's designed to charge multiple Apple products at once. It isn't clear if
AirPower would use the faster charging speeds.
To push those charging speeds, the iPhone X, 8 and 8 Plus will charge even
faster with a USB-C to Lightning cable setup. The configuration requires
buying a handful of accessories, but it can reach top charging speeds if you
don't mind the wires. If you want to stay wireless, you're stuck at 7.5w for
now.
Apple didn't respond to a request for comment on this story.
Does the Mac still matter? Apple execs explain why the MacBook Pro was over
four years in the making, and why we should care.

edition.

RE: looking for an app

2017-11-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Keith,

Just search for a book title. In its description, it will say something to the
effect of commercially produced audio book. Sometimes the description will
read, produced by the National Library Service, Commercially produced audio
book.

As for me, if there are no available copies of an audio book in Over Drive,
then I'll note the name of the narrator, go to BARD, search for the title and
see if the name of the narrator is the same as the one listed in the Over Drive
app.

Only titles that have been produced since 2015 will ever be included in the NLS
distribution system.

I really like the BARD app, for, unlike the Over Drive app, one can adjust the
tone of the audio, in addition to the playback rate.

Good luck and happy reading.

Hi Mark,

Is there a way to find Audible books on Bard, or does one just search for a
desired book, and the result will either be an NLS reader or Audible?

Thanks. And, I was glad to hear your description of the Overdrive apps issues
with bleed through button images. That makes some sense of the experiences I've
had.

Hello Sieghard,

The public library system is completely free in the US.

Amazing stats regarding the differences between the US and Canada. Thank you
for sharing.

As for Audible, I think it is a marvelous resource and turn to it, continually,
for book reviews. In fact, I am a member of Audible.

Over Drive, is a wonderful tool to access the public library system which,
sadly, is underused, these days.

For those who truly cannot afford an Audible membership, who want to enjoy
commercially produced books, however, Audible may not be an option.

Finally, thanks to a law passed by the congress a while back, commercially
produced books can now be distributed via the National Library System, via
BARD, at no charge to the blind. This law took effect in 2015. So, one can
now download, effectively, an audible title, since they all use the same source
material, free of charge, from the NLS.

This law was passed in order to reduce government spending in terms of having
the NLS produce audio books that have already been produced by commercial
vendors. In short, there is no need to reinvent the wheel, time and time
again.

Now when I truly like an audio book, I will buy it from the iBook Store. I
prefer the iBook Store because the titles can then also be played on my iPod
Nanno devices. I also do this in order to support the authors who make my life
a little brighter because of their work.

At last count, I think I now have over 100 iBook audio book titles, not to
mention all of the iBook e-eBook titles.

But, we digress.

The good news is that there is something for everyone. (smile)

OK, thanks for the explanation. Do these library memberships cost a small fee?
Even by the time you add up all the travel cost to go to these libraries and
renew your cards especially if you were to go from LA to SF you could probably
pay for an Audible membership as well.
I think here in British Columbia we have just one large system. British
Columbia is well over double the size of California and even about 95,000
square miles larger than Texas, your largest of the lower 48 States, yet we
have a population of only 4 Million versus the over 39 Million in California,
so maybe you wouldn't have to wait for titles too long. It always strikes me
when you look at the numbers how fortunate we are here in Canada inb that
respect, the entire population of Canada is a bit over 36 Million which is 3
Million less than California alone.
The United States is slightly smaller in area than Canada, imagine if the
population of California were spread across the entire USA and that was it. If
you look further then of course Canada has a huge portion of its land mass
above 60 degrees northern latitude, at least one third, about 90% of our
population lives within 200 miles of the border with the United States. Up here
where I live in northwestern BC there are about 100,000 people living along
Highway 16 from Prince George to Prince Rupert on the west coast, a stretch of
over 500 miles and 60,000 of those are in Prince George alone.
Anyhow, I just like the simplicity of Audible, the amazing availability of even

Hello Everyone,

You know, I would like to be able to use my Apple Earpods headset on a
non-lightning enabled device such as a PC, my current MacBook Pro, and/or in an
automobile audio system.

In order to do this, I am searching for a female lightning to either a 3.5mm,
male, Thunderbolt, male, and/or USB, male, adapter.

Thank you,

Mark

Is there a way to find Audible books on Bard, or does one just search for a

Thanks. And, I was glad to hear your description of the Overdrive apps issues

(smile)

their daily deal email where whichever book is featured is between $1.95 and
$5.95 and from when they have a $4.95 or $5.95 sale where a list of a couple of
hundred titles is on sale for that price. Once or twice I took the time to add
up how many books I bought over the course of 1 year and what I spent in total

Hi Mark,
If you can't find what you are looking for, give this a try:
Cables For Less-custom cables

I haven't used them as of yet, but understand they are reasonable.

Subject: Looking for a Lightning, Female, to USB, Thunderbolt, and/or 3.5mm,
Male, Adapter

Thank you,

Mark

With smart invert colours and this black background, I find that when making or

As for your question, the answer will depend a great deal on how versed you

Generally speaking, I would simply post the photos to Facebook directly from
the PC.

However, if you truly want to post them to your account, via iOS, using only
native resources, then you will have to copy the photos into a specific
folder on your PC and then sync them to your iOS device where they will

Of course, there are many other ways of accomplishing your task but the most

RE: looking for an app

2017-11-15 Thread M. Taylor

(smile)

Hi Mark,

Anyhow, I just like the simplicity of Audible, the amazing availability of even
most of the newest books and the very easy-to-use app. Yes, I do spend probably
$400 or $400 a year on books, about $275 of that is for my Platinum (2-credits
a month) membership and the rest is for books I buy for $3 to $6 a book from
their daily deal email where whichever book is featured is between $1.95 and
$5.95 and from when they have a $4.95 or $5.95 sale where a list of a couple of
hundred titles is on sale for that price. Once or twice I took the time to add
up how many books I bought over the course of 1 year and what I spent in total
and I usually average about $7 or $8 per book. Getting professionally produced,
unabridged audio books for that price to me is well worth it and the books are
mine forever and with 700 or 800 titles in my library by now there I plenty for
me to choose from to read a second time if I happen to be out of credits or new
books. It's of course also nice that now I can simply return a book if I end up
buying something that is not what I thought it was, I simply request a return
and get a refund if I paid a few Dollars for the book or I get my credit back.
Interestingly enough the books still seem to stay in my library.

Take care,
Sieghard

RE: looking for an app

2017-11-15 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
I use Overdrive with only light perception, and screen curtain on all the time.
It is difficult and frustrating, but usable at a moderate level, especially
with audiobooks. I have had some success with Kindle ebooks available through
my library on the app, as well, but much less so.

Hello Paula,

While Over Drive is VoiceOver accessible, I cannot recommend it,
wholeheartedly, to a totally blind person. This is because, while all of the
controls are properly labeled and function as expected, there is a great deal
of display bleed-through.

This means that using explore by touch, button labels that, while not currently
being displayed, will be read by VoiceOver. Unless one were intimately
familiar with the Over Drive app, one would find it extremely frustrating to
use without sighted assistance.

Now, were I to lose the remainder of my vision, assuming the Over Drive
interface remained the same as it is now, I could use the app but this is only
because I know the app, extremely well, as a partially sighted user.

Earlier this summer, just before undergoing major eye surgery where, I could
have quite easily lost the remainder of my vision, I turned the screen curtain
on for about a week; in preparation for a worst case scenario. During that
time, I used all of my favorite apps, including Over Drive with no problem, all
be it a little more slowly. In the case of Over Drive, however, I was
absolutely certain that my ability to use it stemmed from having an extremely
thorough knowledge of its display layout.

Hi Keith,

I believe the point of Overdrive is that as long as you are a member of any
public library you have access to a huge catalogue of titles not just what your
particular library may physically have there.

Unfortunately for me, our library here usually only gets 1 of any audiobook,
and for popular books, one may have to wait weeks or even many months before
that one book becomes available, as the library can only loan out at any one
time the number of books they have purchased. So, if I want to read a new
release that is popular, and wasn't lucky enough to get in line fast enough,
I'm still using Audible. Keith

Hello Rebecca,

I use the Over Drive public Library app to see lists of books by either the
same author or by the book series. In fact, Over Drive will even tell you what
number, in the series, a book is, when possible.

I love this app. I was going to begin an Audible subscription but discovered
Over Drive, just in time. The thing is that Over Drive uses the exact same
titles as Audible.

This is all based on being a member of your local public library but other than
that, the sky is the limit.

As for a completely stand alone app that allows one to search for book series,
I would be interested in obtaining that, also.

I only had this problem on my 6S Plus with the second to last iOS 11.1 public

Hi. I have a costomer WHO experience the same problem, however, he also sees
the problem in facebook and twitter. A restart solves the problem for a Little
while, after which, the mail, message app etc says nothing or 0 unread
messages, even though this is not the case.
The person has an iPhone 6s running Ios 11.1.1. Any idea? Thanks in advance,

RE: looking for an app

2017-11-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mark,

Anyhow, I just like the simplicity of Audible, the amazing availability of even
most of the newest books and the very easy-to-use app.

Take care,
Sieghard

Sieghard,

As much as I wish your words were true, in the US, anyway, it's not quite that
simple.

One has access to only those books that a particular libraries system owns.
Large cities such as Los Angeles, for example, buy up to hundreds of copies of
one title so, in such a situation, because the actual library system is so big,
one only need join that one system.

However, some libraries choose to go it alone, Such as the San Diego public
Library while others choose to create their own systems, made up of a bunch of
tiny libraries, such as the Southern California library system which includes
tiny, tiny city libraries, which, when combined, make up a large repository of
books.

As long as one can prove residency in 1 state, say California, one can join,
for free, any and all of the library systems in that state. In the case of
California, there are over a hundred library systems, some public, some private.

Personally, I belong to 8 different libraries systems. As a result, I can get
virtually any audio book I want at almost any time because each system usually
buys multiple copies of titles. Every now and then, a new title will come out
that has a waiting list of over 2 hundred people but, in those instances, I
simply try another of my library systems and, usually, I can find the title,
immediately or the title will be available soon.

In some cases, I have recommended titles to my various libraries and, almost
always, they buy at least 1 copy, giving me first dibs on borrowing it.

Now, in smaller states, say, for example, Wisconsin, there may only be 1 or two
libraries systems. In those instances, given the budget of the state, titles
can be difficult to find or wait lists may be very, very long.

Despite all of the problems that come from living in a large metropolitan area,
there are some very definite advantages that go along with it, also.

By the way, The reason I don't belong to more libraries systems is because I'd
have to travel further to

RE: photographs

2017-11-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Janet,

Were you able to get your photos posted to Facebook?

As for your question, the answer will depend a great deal on how versed you are
in both using iTunes on your computer and file management in Windows Explorer,

Generally speaking, I would simply post the photos to Facebook directly from
the PC.

However, if you truly want to post them to your account, via iOS, using only
native resources, then you will have to copy the photos into a specific folder
on your PC and then sync them to your iOS device where they will appear in your
Photos app.

Of course, there are many other ways of accomplishing your task but the most
direct way, I suspect, would be one of the two methods I outlined above.

A Quick Tip for Low Vision iOS 11 Users

2017-11-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

If you're like me, you may find it much easier to read/see white text on a
black background. This also holds true for distinguishing the icons on the
iOS launch pad. This is to say, it's easier to see the icons when placed on
a dark or black, solid, background.

For many years, I have been lobbying Apple to include a solid black
background image in its native wallpaper collection.

In iOS 11, they have finally answered the call by including that long
awaited black background image in the wallpaper area.

Check it out and give it a try.

I have a head start on many of you so if you play the game and don't want to
know the answer to one
of Thursday's clues, delete this message, pronto and without delay!

Q:
Occurring once a century: seven letters.
A: SECULAR.
Not the meaning of secular that I know, thought I, which is "Without religion",
  but it was
possible, though unlikely, that I was wrong, so I looked it up and as I had
thought "without
religion" or words to that affect is the only meaning. How the game could
have made such an error
boggles the imagination, or, have I missed something?
Sometimes, I hear a question which I struggle to answer, but when I spell it
out, letter by letter,
it is not as I had heard it, but not in this case.
