RE: A Question for iOS Focus Blue Users

2018-01-28 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Jennie,

Thank you. Your memory is definitely better than mine. (smile)

I located Jonathan's podcast. The Braille display customization info is
discussed in episode 55 of the Blindside Podcast.

I am disappointed that the Routing keys cannot be used as I thought I had tons
of hardware keys with which to play around with. (smile).

Regardless, I am a happy Braille display user.

Mark

Mark,

I know that the customization episode is in the blindside podcast right before
he talks about the iPhone 10. The episode about the galaxy may be there around
too.
As to your second question, I don't believe you can use the routing buttons but
you can use the rocker switches and panning buttons. Hope this helps.

Siri isn’t always so great at pronouncing names correctly. The AI is great for
calling or sending messages, but it’s incredibly frustrating when you tell Siri
to call Jaqueline and the AI searches the web for Violins. Luckily, you can
teach Siri to pronounces your name or any name. Part of the personal
assistant's capabilities is being able to learn. Whether it’s your name or a
friends, you can correct Siri’s pronunciation in a few short steps. Here’s how
to get Siri to say your name correctly.

To teach Siri how to say a name correctly,

hold the home button to activate Siri and then say, "That's not how

Siri will then ask you how to pronounce the contact's first name. Say the name
correctly.

Siri will offer you two or three pronunciation options to choose from. Select
the one that is the correct pronunciation.

If none of the options are close enough, tap Tell Siri Again to repeat the
process until you get a pronunciation you like.

Siri will then repeat the process for the contact's last name as well. Having
corrected Siri’s pronunciation, the AI should be able to say your name, or a
friend's name, correctly now.

A Question for iOS Focus Blue Users

2018-01-28 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

First, does anyone recall the podcast/episode in which Jonathan Mosen
demonstrated the Braille display customization features introduced with iOS
11? I know it was either in the Freedom Scientific FS Cast or his Blindside
Podcast but I cannot locate the episode.

Second, I was just exploring the Braille Display customization features,
attempting to reassign some Focus 40 Blue hardware keys when I discovered
that one cannot use any of the Router keys in this fashion. Is this
correct?

Can one use any kind of hardware key-combos as a custom assignment?

All replies, greatly appreciated.

Mark

Re: fixing the way siri says someones name

2018-01-28 Thread Jewel
I was looking back through some of my saved messages, when I came across
Richard's on correcting Siri's pronounciation of names. Siri says my name
beautifully, but I want to get voice-over to say chess, rather than chiss.
Aussie Karen says * less with no problem, so why can't she say * chess? The
world is not going to come to an end if she continues to say chiss, but to get
her to say chess correctly would be a feather in my moulting cap!

How to Get Siri to Say Your Name Correctly
By Sarah Kingsbury updated on 07/07/2016

Re: new problem with update

2018-01-28 Thread Andrew J. LaPointe
What I do when voice over goes south is, tell siri to turn off voice over
and after he says okay, I turned voiceover off. now, have siri to turn on
voiceover... that will set things straight. I have to do this every so often
but, it does straighten it out. Hopefully, Apple makes an update so to this
problem goes away. Hope this helps. Andy and Shubert

If you can swipe around and hear clicks, then you may have muted voice over.
Try doing a three finger double tap to unmute voice over.

After updating to the latest IOS, my mini Ipad 2 lost voice over speech.

Siri is working and says VO is turned on, but there is no speech with VO.

I asked SIRI to turn on the speech and of course, SIRI didn't know what I was
talking about.

Sadly, when it happened, the screen was at 0% brightness and the screen
curtain is on, which SIRI has no clue what that is.

I can't turn the IPAD off using SIRI and the volume is turned up.

I've tried various commands and no luck getting VO to talk.

What can I do to either turn off the IPad or get Voice Over to start speaking.

The battery level was at 61% when this happened and is still working.

  Thanks.

  Vicki

iOS 11.3: The 7 best new features

2018-01-28 Thread M. Taylor
iOS 11.3: The 7 best new features

Apple's next update brings fixes for Apple's battery snafu, new Animoji,
A.R. upgrades and more.
January 24, 2018 3:23 PM PST

More floating cartoon puppets for your face: Just one of the new features in
iOS 11.3.
iOS 11.3, the latest version of Apple's iPhone and iPad operating system, is
coming this spring -- and it'll offer more features than you might expect
from a ".3" release. Whether you're interested in augmented reality, cute
Animoji or just a way to keep Apple from throttling your old iPhone, damn
it, there's something in this update to pique your curiosity.
And those are just the headline features from a list that's growing longer
as we speak, as Apple devs rip apart the new iOS 11.3 beta to see what the
company's changed. (Did I mention? Apple released iOS 11.3 beta 1 to
developers today.)
Here are the features we know about, as of Jan. 24.

1.
Take control of your battery
I'm not talking about battery life -- I'm talking about the ability to keep
Apple from secretly throttling your phone's processing power as your phone's
battery ages. Apple was caught red-handed doing that this past winter, and
wound up having to apologize for keeping it a secret. And though the company
apparently had a good reason for doing it -- preventing unexpected shutdowns
-- the revelation left a bad taste in some people's mouths.
Anyhow, as of iOS 11.3, your battery is yours to control. You can turn off
the throttling feature, and/or navigate to Settings > Battery to take a look
at your battery's current health. If your iPhone 6 or later does need a
battery swap to maintain peak performance without issues, Apple says iOS
11.3 will tell you so.
Then, it's just a matter of opting for Apple's $29 replacement battery
sometime before the end of the year. (That's how long Apple has said the $29
price will last.)

2.
More Animoji
Got an iPhone X? Then you're probably familiar with Animoji, the floating
animated avatars you control with your face so you can send animal-ified
emotions to your friends and family via iMessage. (They use the Face ID
motion sensing camera array built into the front of the iPhone X.)
iOS 11 came with 12 different Animoji, and iOS 11.3 brings four new
creatures into the pen -- a lion, bear, dragon, and skull.
You can see a little preview of them in our animated GIF right here. (No,
the skull doesn't have a lot of emotion. Should have taken lessons from
Pixar's Coco.)

3.
Augmented reality goes vertical
Apple's ARKit augmented-reality apps can be pretty amazing, but the
world-blurring technology had one key limitation right out of the gate.
ARKit could only recognize horizontal surfaces -- think floors and tables --
when deciding where to place virtual objects and make them appear to be part
of your real world.
With IKEA's ARKit app, for instance, you could see how a new sofa might look
like on the floor of your living room, but you couldn't mount a virtual
cabinet to your real walls.
But iOS 11.3 comes with ARKit 1.5, which recognizes vertical surfaces and
"irregularly shaped surfaces like circular tables," too, according to Apple.
That should let AR developers build a variety of new things, and could
potentially improve the accuracy of augmented reality ruler apps as well.
Plus, ARKit 1.5 can recognize flat pictures like signs, posters and artwork
now and use them to trigger AR content. CNET's Shara Tibken tried pointing
an iPhone at a poster of a lunar lander and was rewarded with an interactive
video of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
Here's a list of iPhones and iPads that support ARKit.

4.
AirPlay 2
It's not mentioned in Apple's press release, but savvy developers discovered
it anyhow: iOS 11.3 will bring AirPlay 2, which allows Apple to take on
Sonos with multiroom audio playback (e.g., you decide which song plays on
each of multiple speakers distributed throughout your home). It's a feature
that was announced last June at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference
(WWDC) for iOS 11, but apparently wasn't ready until now.
Of course, it'd probably help if there were more AirPlay 2 speakers to
support the feature. The $349, £319 or AU$499 Apple HomePod, shipping this
February after an initial delay, won't support it at launch -- and it's not
clear if iOS 11.3 is what the HomePod is waiting for. Apple didn't
immediately reply to a request for comment.
In the meanwhile, it sounds like you'll be able to cast audio to multiple
Apple TVs around your home. That's something.

5.
Read and delete iMessages anywhere
It's one thing to get notifications on your iPhone, iPad and Mac when you
get a new message. It's something else entirely to be able to delete a
message on your Apple laptop and have that deletion reflected on your phone
and tablet, too.

iPhone X: 5 things in Apple's best phone that drive us crazy, CNET

2018-01-28 Thread M. Taylor
iPhone X: Five things that drive me absolutely nuts

There's a lot to like, but Apple needs to rethink some things for 2018's
iPhones.
January 28, 2018 4:00 AM PST
 By Sarah Tew, CNET

For well over two months, my days have ended and begun with the iPhone X.
Compared to older iPhones, the X feels impressively fast, slim and, with 5.8
inches of screen space, satisfyingly spacious. But as I've grown to
appreciate some of its finer points, I've also discovered the traits that
make me roll my eyes, gnash my teeth and occasionally erupt with a
well-chosen expletive.

The funny thing is that almost all of these ire-inducing "quirks" stem from
Apple's redesign of the iPhone X, which removed the home button and
installed a bunch of swipes and taps to cover all navigation bases.
On one hand, Face ID and gestures prove that iPhone users can live without a
home button. On the other, learning the ropes takes time, and the swipey
stand-ins don't always make a lot of sense. Some iPhone X gestures feel
half-baked.

So here we go, my five personal worst iPhone X navigation offenders. Stay
tuned for a future piece on some of the things I truly do love about the
iPhone X.

Face ID never works when I most need it
Face ID, Apple's replacement for the secure fingerprint reader, uses the
iPhone X's front-facing camera to approve mobile purchases and unlock the
phone.
It works by making a 3D map of your eyes, nose and mouth -- except when it
doesn't. Face ID recognizes me often, but fails enough times to make me
notice. For example, I have about a 50-50 success rate while wearing my
polarized sunglasses.

Face ID doesn't work when your face is stuffed in a pillow.
When it doesn't work is when I want it to most: as soon as I wake up in the
morning. Part of the problem is biological. I'm near-sighted, which means
that when I first reach for the phone while my glasses and contacts are
resting in their cases, I wind up holding the phone closer to my face than
the 25 to 50 centimeters that Apple recommends.
And then there's the fact that in my groggy morning state, I'm lying on my
side with either one eye closed, or my face buried in my pillow.
There's no way Face ID is boring its way through that, and it's not Apple's
fault.
What is Apple's fault is that the iPhone X doesn't have a satisfying backup
plan to my morning squinty-eye. With Face ID, you don't get an immediate
second chance to biometrically unlock the phone, not the way you do when the
fingerprint scanner on a home button fails; you just tap it again.
No such luck here. You can wait some long seconds only to have to try again,
or lock and unlock the phone to kickstart a new Face ID scan.
More often than not, I wind up typing in my 6-digit password, which is
faster than waiting for Face ID to maybe or maybe not unlock. This gets
annoying when you do it multiple times a day, every day. I'd love a
biometric backup, or a faster do-over time if Face ID misses the scan the
first time around.

Bleh battery life
If you're switching from an older iPhone with battery life that can barely
hobble through a single day (especially if Apple did this), the iPhone X is
a fantastic upgrade. At least at first.

The iPhone X will last longer than your old iPhone, but not as long as a
$1,000 handset should.
After two months, I noticed a steep battery decline. Of course your charge
will take a hit every time you stream music or video, or use navigation.
That's life with a phone. But even on days when I didn't engage these
things, I found myself topping up the power reserves before going out for
the night, unconvinced my phone would make it through the evening
activities.
When you live on your phone -- texting, looking up stuff online, reading
e-books -- that uncertainty makes the difference between a device you can
trust and one you have to constantly manage.
This isn't just anecdotal, either. In CNET's looping-video tests, the iPhone
X lasted just shy of 11.5 hours average after 9 tests. That's two hours less
than the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus results with the same test, and six
hours less than the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (17.5 hours).

Anecdotally, it lasts longer than the iPhone 8 in real-life use, but peters
out before the 8 Plus loses steam.

These time windows don't seem so short in a vacuum, but when you compare the
results across the board, the iPhone X -- the most expensive mainstream
phone you can buy -- drains as quickly as some midrange phones that cost
less than half the price, if not faster.

To make matters more frustrating, Apple hides the iPhone X battery
percentage meter; it isn't visible at a glance. Instead, you have to swipe
down from the top of the phone on the right side of the notch to call up the
Control Center. Only then can you keep a detailed tab on how much juice you
have left.

Maps navigation shortcut only goes one way
Tap this to get back to your ongoing Google Maps navigation.
I use maps navigation quite a lot. When you pop out of either

Well, I did a hard reset and when I plugged it in, the problem was fixed.

I thought this problem was solved with the last update to IOS 11? What is the
latest update anyway?

Thank to to everyone for the help.

Siri is working and says VO is turned on, but there is no speech with VO.

I asked SIRI to turn on the speech and of course, SIRI didn't know what I

Sadly, when it happened, the screen was at 0% brightness and the screen
curtain is on, which SIRI has no clue what that is.

I can't turn the IPAD off using SIRI and the volume is turned up.

I've tried various commands and no luck getting VO to talk.

What can I do to either turn off the IPad or get Voice Over to start
speaking.

The battery level was at 61% when this happened and is still working.

  Thanks.

Thank you so much for asking. To be honest, I'm not certain for as I asked

Hello All,

If, like me, you find yourself going to Starbucks, frequently, keep in mind
that the iOS app is virtually completely VoiceOver accessible, including the
Starbucks rewards program. Not only will signing up for the rewards program
earn you free items, truthfully, it's a lot of fun.

So get the app, sign-up, and start earning those free drink and food items.

As for me, I have earned two free rewards, this month, alone. Each reward
entitles you to one free drink/food item of your choice. They say some
restrictions apply but, so far, I haven't encountered any.

Yesterday, I went into a Starbucks store, informed the barista that I wanted
to use one of my rewards and then I asked," Tell me, what is the most
expensive item in the store that I can get with this reward?" (Big Smile).

If you can swipe around and hear clicks, then you may have muted voice over.
Try doing a three finger double tap to unmute voice over.

Subject: new problem with update

After updating to the latest IOS, my mini Ipad 2 lost voice over speech.

Siri is working and says VO is turned on, but there is no speech with VO.

I asked SIRI to turn on the speech and of course, SIRI didn't know what I was
talking about.

Sadly, when it happened, the screen was at 0% brightness and the screen curtain
is on, which SIRI has no clue what that is.

I can't turn the IPAD off using SIRI and the volume is turned up.

I've tried various commands and no luck getting VO to talk.

What can I do to either turn off the IPad or get Voice Over to start speaking.

The battery level was at 61% when this happened and is still working.

Thanks.

Vicki

2018-01-28 Thread Vicki W.
Sctach my last question about updating. You answered it! It worked great as
far as updating but I haven't test out if it helps with access yet.

Do I need to update ICloud on my phone and mini IPad as well? I'm not
finding options to do that.

Thanks again.

Hello Cliff,

I use the Apple Updater app that I launch from the Windows 7 Start Menu. I
find that it does a better job of installing the latest version of the
Control Panel than using a stand-alone link.

I find the icloud control panel very inaccessible. You can have some success
