Revisiting the forgotten history of obscure Apple accessories, 9 to 5 Mac

2018-03-19 Thread M. Taylor
Revisiting the forgotten history of obscure Apple accessories
By Michael Steeber

For many iPhone X owners, two of the most hotly anticipated upcoming Apple
products are accessories. Both previewed during last fall's keynote address
at Steve Jobs Theater, the AirPower wireless charging mat and AirPods
wireless charging case arrive on the heels of another high-profile Apple
accessory - the HomePod.

While Apple's accessory strategy is more ambitious and important to their
success than ever before, the company's assent for accent has a storied
past. Just like the products they complement, accessories come and go with
the seasons, and after touring desk drawers and closet shelves for a few
years often find themselves abandoned by time.
Browsing the halls of obscure and forgotten Apple accessories reveals a
winding and surprising assortment of products. From cases, to cables, to
chargers, how many do you know?

Lightning to Micro USB Adapter
The iPhone 5 was the first iOS device to drop the familiar 30-pin connector
for charging and syncing in favor of the Lightning port. Alongside the
phone's introduction in September 2012, Apple quietly released the Lightning
to Micro USB adapter for the European market.

The dongle appeased an odd EU legislation that made it necessary for all
smartphones to offer a micro USB connection. In November 2012, Apple made
the adapter available to customers in the United States. You can still pick
one up on Apple's website today for $19.

Apple Remote
The original Apple Remote debuted alongside the iMac G5 in October 2005, and
was designed to work with Apple's Front Row home theater application for Mac
OS X and universal iPod docks. The first-generation remote looked a lot like
the original iPod shuffle, and was made entirely out of plastic. Power came
from a small, button cell battery that popped out of the bottom of the
device. The Apple TV adopted the Apple Remote as its controller when it went
on sale in 2007.
Apple released a longer, aluminum redesign of the remote in 2009,
complementing the maturing aesthetic of newer Macs and iOS devices. While
you can still buy the remote on Apple's website for $19, Front Row no longer
exists, and iPods are mostly a thing of the past.
Today, Apple ships the more modern Siri Remote with new Apple TVs, which
includes a touch surface instead of a directional pad.

Apple USB SuperDrive
One of the biggest concerns for early adopters of the MacBook Air was how to
use existing CDs and DVDs with a computer that had no optical disk drive.
Apple's solution was to offer the MacBook Air SuperDrive, which debuted
alongside the original Air in January 2008.
As other computers in Apple's lineup stopped offering internal optical
drives, the product was rebranded as the Apple USB SuperDrive, compatible
with all Macs manufactured after 2008. Today, most people have completely
moved on from physical media, but you can still buy a USB SuperDrive from
Apple for $79 if you're looking for an expensive dose of nostalgia.

iPhone TTY Adapter
First introduced for the original iPhone in 2007, Apple's TTY Adapter is
probably one of the most niche accessories the company has ever made. The
3.5mm adapter is designed to let an iPhone interface with standard TTY
accessibility devices. Despite the fact that the iPhone X, 8, 8 Plus, 7 and
7 Plus have no headphone jack, Apple still sells the adapter for $19. Since
iOS 10, you can make TTY calls from your iPhone without using additional
hardware.
Discontinued Accessories

Pride Edition and International Collection Woven Nylon Apple Watch bands
In June 2016, Apple distributed special pride-themed Watch bands to
employees participating in San Francisco's annual LGBT Pride Parade. A year
later, the same bands were made available to the general public for $49 on
Apple's website. By September, the bands were no longer for sale, making
them one of the shortest lived Apple Watch collections to date.
Even more limited was Apple's International Collection of nylon bands
created for the 2016 Olympic Games. A series of 14 bands themed after the
flags of competing countries debuted in time for the start of the games in
August 2016. While the bands sold for the same $49 as other nylon designs,
they were available exclusively at Apple VillageMall in Rio de Janeiro.
This past January, Apple created a special Activity ring-themed band for
employees participating in an internal wellness challenge. The band has not
yet been made available to the general public.
iPod touch loop

The fifth-generation iPod touch was the first and only iOS device to include
a mounting button for a color-matched loop accessory. The iPod touch has
long been a favorite choice for children, and the loop was designed to save
iPods from costly falls.
After its introduction in September 2012, the loop was sold until the
sixth-generation iPod touch dropped the connector entirely. Today, Apple
sells a similar Siri Remote Loop for the Apple TV.

RE: Google Lens is now available on iOS, The Verge

2018-03-19 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Rich,

Well, as far as I can tell, some people have access to Lens in their apps and
some do not. A friend of mine in New York has it but no one that I know of, in
California, so far, has access.

Mark,
I have the version 3.15 of Google Photos, and nowhere can I find any options
about Google lens.
It sounds like this is a feature of their photos app and not a separate app.
This is with VoiceOver with iOS 11.2.6.

Google Lens is now available on iOS
By Thuy Ong

Google is officially rolling out its Lens feature to Apple iOS devices over
the next few weeks. Lens is an on-demand object recognition tool, accessible
through the Google Photos app. When users take a photo of a book or
painting, for example, Lens recognizes it and spits out information telling
you more details about the object.

Lens works on photos of business cards, books, landmarks and buildings,
paintings in a museum, plants or animals, and flyers and event billboards.
When you use Lens on a photo that has phone numbers or an address, you can
automatically save this information as a contact on your phone, while events
will be added to your calendar.

Starting today and rolling out over the next week, those of you on iOS can
try the preview of Google Lens to quickly take action from a photo or
discover more about the world around you. Make sure you have the latest
version (3.15) of the app.https://goo.gl/u9uz8z

To access the feature on your iOS device, launch the Google Photos app,
select a photo, then tap on the Google Lens icon. Depending on what the
photo is, you can then check the details Google provides, or take an action.
Google notes that if your web and app activity setting is switched on, your
Google Lens activity will be saved to your Google account. You can delete
any history from your My Activity page at any time. The feature is rolling
out to version 3.15 of the iOS app, so make sure you update.

Lens debuted last October on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. Google started
rolling out the feature to all Android phones with Google Photos installed
earlier this month.

Google photos with Google lens

2018-03-19 Thread Richard Turner
I copied the below out of the Google Photos help after today's update mentioned
Google Lens.

There is not anything using VoiceOver that says squat about Google Lens after
selecting a photo from within Google Photos per these instructions from the
help file:

: Google Lens will work on any device with the latest version of Google Photos.
Currently, Google Lens can only be used if your device language is set to
English.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app [Photos] .
  2. Select a photo.
  3. Tap Google Lens [Google Lens] .
  4. Depending on your photo, check the details, or take an action.

See your Google Lens activity

If Web & App Activity is turned on, your Google Lens activity, including the
image, is saved to your Google Account. You can see your Google Lens activity
saved here.

Delete Google Lens activity

You can delete past searches, browsing history, and other activity from your
Google Account. You're in control of what's stored in My
Activity, and you can stop saving most activity
at any time. Learn about My Activity and how to control what's saved

2018-03-19 Thread Richard Turner
Mark,
I have the version 3.15 of Google Photos, and nowhere can I find any options
about Google lens.

Re: iPad Split View and question regarding iPad gesture

2018-03-19 Thread Jennie Facer
Hi,

When you want to use split view, while you are in one app such as Writer, take
two fingers and swipe up from the very bottom. Then, you can choose the app you
want to use in your doc. Now flick up and choose which side of the screen you
want the app to appear. Double tap. When you are done, there is an app divider
right in the middle of the screeen. It may be a little hard to find, but once
you find it, double tap here and you can return to your normal view.

Thanks,

Re: Bluetooth Keyboard Question

2018-03-19 Thread Jennie Facer
Hi,

I have the Logitech k810 which is the windows layout of that keyboard and have
had no problems with its layout for iOS. The command key is the alt key I
believe. VO pronounces it as command also so there is no need for key mapping.
I hope this helps. Have a great day!

Bluetooth Keyboard Question

2018-03-19 Thread joedinero68
Good Morning

If this question was already asked in the keyboard thread I apologize. If you
purchase a Bluetooth keyboard that is setup Windows style. How does it handle
IOS specifically do you have to do key mapping or is there a set way that IOS
handles assigning the option and command keys as well as do they maintain the
current positions of the existing alt and control keys on the keyboard. Would
love to just have one keyboard for all devices and just switch back and forth.

Anthony, no, the K480 does not have a number pad, so it is smaller. There is a
nice carrying case you can buy for around $20 that also holds an iPad for those
who want to use it with an iPad.

Do you think that blind people will be able to utilize some of these

Hello Todd and list,
I am copying Todd directly, but thought others might want the information.
Mark forwarded your message to the list about the Fopydo scanning stand. The
reason you only find PayPal on his web site is that to buy directly from him,
he can only accept PayPal.
You can get the Fopydo stand through the NFB Market Place using a credit card.

Re: Use scenarios for ipad over iPhone for blind users

2018-03-19 Thread Michael Feir
The talking atlas app was there when I looked around two weeks ago.
However, it hadn't been updated in a while and it's around $40 to get. You
need to search for it with your iPAD since it only ever appeared in the
iPAD app store. I don't need an atlas that badly at the moment.

I'm not a musician so hopefully, others can give you better council there.
It make intuitive sense to me that the added length of an iPAD in landscape
mode would make keyboard playing easier. However, for serious composing, I
have a hard time imagining my wife Sara using virtual instruments on a
touchscreen and being happy with that.
