Can the Apple Earpods be Used for Making Calls?

2018-04-23 Thread dani pagador
Hi, Everyone.
I have a pair of standard Apple earpods--the ones that plug in to the
headphone jack and have the volume controls on the right wire. Can I
use those when making phone calls?

Thanks,
Dani

RE: Sound hound

2018-04-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
What are you using it for?
If it is to identify a song that is playing there is a much simpler way which
doesn’t involve downloading any apps. You simply ask SIRI “What song is this”
or “What song is playing”. SIRI will then listen and tell you the song, they
use Chazam as their source.

I Need Help with Assigning a Custom Gesture in iOS 11

2018-04-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Try as I may, I cannot discover how to assign a custom gesture, I just
created, to any action, in the Assistive Touch area of iOS.

My Goal is to assign a custom gesture that will allow me to skip to the next
song in a Play List. Can this be done? If so, please tell me how.

I have watched over 20 YouTube videos and read countless articles but no one
seems to describe exactly how one assigns a newly created gesture to an
action.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

RE: Brailliant BI 14 display

2018-04-23 Thread Cris Ali
Thanks Ed,
I can see your point. I am not sure that a 14 braille cell display would be of
much use with a computer. It is simply too small. I need at least 40 cells
display to enjoy using with a computer.
A 14 cell braille display however, is small and easily portable. That makes
it an ideal companion for a smart phone to be used on the go.

Hello Chris,

I have both the Focus Blue 14 and now the Brilliant 14. I am not a big fan of
the Focus 14 as I feel that the device has way to many buttons. Those buttons
are useful for what they are there for with the use of Jaws. I feel that the
Brailliant 14 is much better suited for use with the iOS platform. It was built
with that in mind after all.

Hi Mary and Chris

If it’s any help, I ordered and have received a Brailliant BI14, and am pleased
with what I saw. I like the size and weight of it - it makes it very portable
(much more so than other displays out there). I also really like the
stand-alone note taking feature on it - it just means you can get it out and
make notes really quickly/easily and then link those notes to your apple
devices when you have time/if you want to. Also, obviously, I like the fact it
will act as both a display and keyboard for my IPhone and IPad. There are a
couple of things I’d like to see improved, and I hope HumanWare will take them
on board.

Hello,

The Sound Hound application is very accessible. The on boarding process is a
little weird. There will be a button labeled at the bottom of the screen “Let’s
Go” You need to ignore the unlabeled buttons as they don’t do anything. Sound
Hound will now ask for permission to use the microphone, location, and access
Apple Music. You will need to at the very minimum let it access the microphone.
After this is all done the interface is very simple and accessible.

I have done that, but when I launch it, it just sputters for a few times and
then nothing. I said I would try it because we got Direct TV now for $10 for
the first three months, I figured $30 for 3 months wasn't bad at all, but so
far, it isn't going to be something I keep since I can't get it to play

Re: Brailliant BI 14 display

2018-04-23 Thread Ed Worrell
Hello Chris,

I have both the Focus Blue 14 and now the Brilliant 14. I am not a big fan of
the Focus 14 as I feel that the device has way to many buttons. Those buttons
are useful for what they are there for with the use of Jaws. I feel that the
Brailliant 14 is much better suited for use with the iOS platform. It was built
with that in mind after all.

Re: Sound hound

2018-04-23 Thread Ed Worrell

Re: Sonos and airplay?

2018-04-23 Thread Marie N.
Okay I will give it another try and thanks. Not sure what I was doing wrong but
obviously I was. LOL! I do love the Sonos speakers.
While on the subject, I hope it is okay to mention the fact that the MLB At bat
app is not streaming on sonos this year and would anyone using this feature
please complain to MLB.

Subject: RE: Sonos and airplay?

Hi Marie,

I believe you must be mistaken, here are the specs of the Play 5 from the Sonos
website:

• Fills a large room with pure, brilliant sound.

• Bold. Pure. Dynamic. Intense. With deep bass that packs a punch.

• Uncompromised sound whether vertical or horizontal.

• Convenient, ultra-responsive top panel touch controls.

• Line-in. Plug in any device you desire.

• Streams over wi-fi, not Bluetooth, so the music never stops – even if you get
a phone call.

• Connect Sonos to an Amazon Echo or Dot, then simply request the music you
love.

Note item 5 in this list: Line-in. Plug in any device you desire.

The player should have come with a 3.5mm male-to-male cable, but they are also
easily available at any electronics store.

You can of course also use a 3.5mm male to RCA male cable (that is the one with
the two plugs at one end, red and white) and connect a stereo component such as
a CD/DVD player, tuner etc.

OK, now once you have connected a device, let’s say it’s your iPod Touch, you
should hear Voiceover coming out of your Sonos. If not make sure you go to your
Sonos app, select Your Play 5 on the Room tab, then go to the Browse tab,
select Line In and make sure you tap “Play”.

You can also set the Line In connection on the Play 5 to auto play on the Play
5 or, if you have other Sonos speakers, on any of them and you can set it so
if the player selected for auto play is already part of a group it plays on all
speakers in the group and lastly you can set it to start at a certain volume
level. This is useful because if it happens to be loud music and the volume on
the player where it starts playing is high it doesn’t start blasting giving
everybody a heart attack. To do all this, go here in your Sonos app:

1. Tap the “More” tab at the bottom right of the screen

2. Tap Settings

3. Tap Room Settings

4. Tap your Play 5 or, if you have more than one, tap the one where you have
the 3.5mm cable plugged in

5. Just under where you can change the name of the speaker, tap on the “Line
In” button

6. Explore the options available such as auto play, volume etc.

Note that if you don’t have a cable plugged in the “Line In” button under the
room settings for your Play 5 won’t show up, it’s only there if a cable is
plugged in. You don’t have to have anything connected on the other end, but the
player senses if something is plugged into the 3.5mm port and only shows this
button if there is.

I have several Connect and Connect Amp players as well as my first generation
Play 5 which when it first came out in 2011 or 2012 was called the S5 and I
have my Airport Express plugged in to my Connect Amp in the Kitchen which is
connected to in-wall speakers which are installed between my counter top and
the upper cabinets, I also have a cable connected to my Connect in the office
which I can use to quickly plug in my laptop. This way I can just take my
wireless keyboard to the living, room, kitchen or wherever I have a Sonos
player and hear Jaws in that room. Lastly I have a cable connected to the
Connect Amp in my bedroom. That player has in-ceiling speakers above the bed
and I use the Line In cable if, for some reason I want to connect my iPhone or
Echo Dot.

All of these Line In ports on all 3 players are set to auto play in the bedroom
and then from there I can either group another room or rooms to it or change it
if I want to play only in the kitchen, bathroom, office, living room or
downstairs in my woodworking shop or the Connect I have connected to my big
high-end stereo in my music room.

Note, my old S5/Play 5 has two 3.5mm ports, in addition to the Line In port it
does have a 3.5mm headphone jack. This is awesome for private listening which
at this point is not something Sonos is focused on. I mostly have the Play 5
sitting under my bed with a set of good headphones connected, in the summer
when it’s nice outside I have a second power cable on our deck so I can just
unplug it under the bed and bring it outside.

I really hope in the next year or two that Sonos will finally get around to
private listening and come up with a good Sonos headset which acts as its own
player. I’m sure they would sell a load of those.

Regards,

Sieghard

Re: battery case for apple SE

2018-04-23 Thread Andy Baracco
It shows on page 1 of the home screen. Your phone probably starts at page 2, so
a 3 finger swipe to the right will put you on the first page. There are 5 pages
on this screen so you can do a 3 finger swipe up until you get to the last
page. The info should be there. It will give you the battery status for both
the phone and the smart battery case.

The SE is the same size as the 5s so I would think if you could find one for
either the SE or the 5s it would work. You should be able to leave it in all of
the time, but if you do a lot of scanning, as with KNFB reader and you use a
stand, you might want to remove it from the case when doing this.

I want the iPhone 8+ as my next phone because I want some apps that are not
available on Android and I want a phone with the home button and finger
print sensor on it.

Best wishes

Paula

Re: witch phone has the beter audio the iPhone 8 or the 8 plus or the iPhone 10

2018-04-23 Thread Alan Lemly
Wayne,

I'm also trying to decide the best time to upgrade my iPhone. I really want a
model with a home button because I'm not a fan of the iPhone X interface
changes and am not ready to relearn a bunch of gestures to make up for the
missing home button. Be aware that there is a risk in waiting until the new
models are released because you can't get all the capacity that was available
when the model you're getting was first released. For example, if you go to the
Apple Store and shop for an iPhone 7 today, the largest capacity you can get is
128GB even though you could get a 256GB model when it was released. Just
something to keep in mind.

RE: Sonos and airplay?

2018-04-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The Connect is meant to be used with an existing stereo or powered speakers and
the Connect Amp as the name implies has a built-in amplifier. It’s actually a
good one also, a 110 Watt (55 Watts per channel) Class D amplifier and it has
traditional speaker posts so you use any bookshelf or tower speakers you have
and connect them with regular speaker wire. It also has a single RCA output
which you can use to connect a powered subwover if you happen to have one.
The Connect and Connect Amp both have an RCA input and since the Connect is
meant to be used with an existing amplifier or receiver it has 3 different
output options, RCA analogue and also Toslink Optical as well as Coax Digital.
The nice thing is that you can have it connected to an amplifier or receiver
via one of the digital connections and still run an RCA cable to a set of
powered speakers in another room or you could use one of Sennheiser’s wireless
headsets with it.
These headsets usually have a base station which is used to charge the headset
and also is the transmitter. The less expensive ones use an analogue RCA
connection and work on 900 MHz, the more expensive ones which can cost upwards
of $300 or $400 can be connected via Toslink Optical and the connection between
the base station and the headset is fully digital so the sound quality is
awesome. Currently this is the only way you can use Sonos with a headset unless
like me you have one of the original Play 5 speakers which has a 3.5mm
headphone jack and you don’t mind using a wired headset. OK, so I guess you can
use a bluetooth transmitter as well and then use a bluetooth earpiece or
headphone, but I tried this back in January and found that even with an
expensive bluetooth transmitter this was at least to me not satisfactory since
there were always little drop-outs etc.

Hello Sieghard
Thanks for the explanation. Currently I have problems with internet in that the
moment I open webpages lots of stuff pop up and I cannot close those, although
I tried many things, so I cannot do any searches. So my question is: what is
the difference between the Sonos Connect and Sonos Connect Amp and is there a
huge price difference?

Subject: RE: Sonos and airplay?

That is at this point up to Apple. It is Airplay 2 which Sonos will support and
while it was briefly available in one of the earlier iOS 11.3 betas I think in
February it was pulled when the following beta came out and it was not put back
by the time iOS 11.3 was released. Airplay 2 is also what will enable multiple
homePods to be used together so until Apple gets it right Sonos can’t enable
it, either.
Having said this you could always add Airplay to Sonos by spending $50 or so on
an Airport Express and provided you have something like a Connect or Play 5
which has a Line In port. You would simply connect the Airport Express to the
Line in port of the sonos and Airplay to the Airport Express. I set this up
years ago and it works perfectly well. Of course I am not saying it is what I
recommend at this point since I am pretty sure Airplay 2 will come soon.

Sieghard

I thought that Sonos was going to have airplay enabled soon but it has been
some time and to my knowledge it is still not available. Any word on the
feature. I would love the system even more if it had airplay.

Re: Amazon prime and audio description

2018-04-23 Thread Alan Lemly
Kimber,

Thanks for these details on how to turn on audio description with the prime
video app. My answer was just wrong so I'm so glad you had it. I do believe
once audio description is turned on in the app that it stays on for all
programs that have description. I'm always a big confused why developers put a
setting like this under an episode playback control when it has application
across the entire app. No wonder I couldn't remember where to find it.

In addition, if you wait to see what the new phones in September are,
and decide to get the 8 or 8 Plus, you can get them at a discount
since by then they will be last year's phones. That's probably what

Re: Amazon prime and audio description

2018-04-23 Thread Kimberly
In order to turn on audio description in the amazon prime video app, you first
must start playing whatever episode you're planning to watch. With the video
playing, start exploring the screen until you find an option for subtitles.
Once you've accessed that option you'll find audio description in there.

I assume that once descriptions have been turned on it will be on for future
episodes, but I can't say for sure as I've just started playing around with
this app.

Re: battery case for apple SE

2018-04-23 Thread Fanus
Hello Andy
I was not aware that there is an Apple battery pack for the iPhone 8. My
problem with all the batterly packs is that I do not know what the charge of
the batteryPack battery is. Long time ago I heard there was a battery pack
which could announce the battery status. so if one uses this one for iPhone 8
does the status perhaps show on the iPhone screen?

The SE is the same size as the 5s so I would think if you could find one for
either the SE or the 5s it would work. You should be able to leave it in all of
the time, but if you do a lot of scanning, as with KNFB reader and you use a
stand, you might want to remove it from the case when doing this.

  Hi, Andy

Thanks for feedback. Just to confirm, that there is only one model of the
mophy juice pack for the apple se and that you can leave the se in it all the
time?

Check out the Mophie juice Pack. I used those until I got my iPhone 8 and
started using the one from Apple, but I do not believe that Apple makes one for
the SE.

Hi, Am seeking recommendations for battery case for apple SE. My ideal
case would be one that can stay on the iphone at all times and can be charged
at same time the phone battery itself is being charged. Please tell me what
you like about the one you suggest. I have looked on amazon, but can’t really
tell if any of them have the features I want. Thanks for your help.

Re: Sonos and airplay?

2018-04-23 Thread Fanus

Regards,

Sieghard

I thought that Sonos was going to have airplay enabled soon but it has been
some time and to my knowledge it is still not available. Any word on the
feature. I would love the system even more if it had airplay.

If you're asking about the iPhone 7 and 8 then you can press the virtual
home button to bring up the home screen, double tap it to bring up the
App Switcher and triple tap it to toggle Voice Over. There's a physical
indentation on the screen and you get hap tic feedback when you press
it, so it basically acts just like a mechanical button except it won't
work until the display is active.

RE: Amazon prime and audio description

2018-04-23 Thread Alan Lemly
I believe there used to be a setting in the Amazon Prime Video app to turn on
audio description but I've been through every setting and can't find one in the
latest version of the app. You do need to have audio descriptions turned on
under Settings, General, Accessibility and it is about fourth from the bottom
of that screen which it sounds s if you already have this turned on. If you
want to test audio description in the Prime Video app, the Bosch series has it
in the first 3 seasons for sure and I'm assuming also in the 4th season just
released.

If the audio description isn't working for you, I'd suggest contacting Amazon
under the Contact Us setting in the Prime Video app or by calling Amazon
Accessibility at 888-283-1678 or emailing them at
accessibility-feedb...@amazon.com.

How do I turn the audio description on in amazon prime? I am using the app on
an iPhone 7-plus. I have audio description on in the iPhone settings. Does that
apply with the Amazon Prime video App?
