RE: HoneyWell Smart Thermostats, was: Thermostat for Gas Heating

2018-08-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Todd,

When I open my Honeywell Home app I have a “Menu: button at the very top left.
If I double tap on it and then do a 4-finger tap near the bottom of the screen
it takes me all the way down to “Logout”, if I swipe back once to the left I’m
on a link “About the app”, double tap on that and do another 4-finger tap near
the bottom of the screen and Voiceover jumps directly to the last item on the
screen which is the version.

My version is 4.2.0 (371)

As for the current indoor temperature, when I first open the app and I have the
menu button at the top left, I have an “Add new device” button as the last
element on that screen and again a 4-finger single tap in the bottom half of
the screen will take me there. Swiping back once to the left currently tells me
“21.5 ring above inside”. Note that the “ring above” is a symbol and visually
looks like the degrees symbol, but Voiceover in this instance speaks it as
“ring above”.
Here is a full description of the screen:

Top line underneath the status bar: Menu button on the left, name of your home
in the middle as a heading and “Weather Forecast” button at the top right
Underneath this: “My Thermostat” on the left, double tapping on that will open
a new screen”,, next in the middle “Temperature set to 16.0 degrees Celsius,
double tap to increase button” and on the right “Set temperature is 16.0
degrees Celsius”
Underneath that on the left: “21.5 ring above inside”, the current room
temperature measured by the thermostat and I think again underneath that (have
to ask somebody to actually describe it) is the Add new device button.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi Sieghard,

Looks like my app is up to date from the app store. I can’t find a version
number anywhere in the app itself to confirm, though and my inside temp still
doesn’t speak. Knowing that yours does is hopeful...maybe it’ll show up soon
in mine.

Hi Bill,
Matching wiring colors is not a problem. I have sighted friends who can be
present to match the colors for me when I do the install, but other than
matching the colors of the four wires, would there be any other challenges in
the installation itself? I understand that I may need sighted help connecting
it to my network, which should not be a problem.

You will have to match wiring colors. You will also need sighted help to
connect the app, as I recall it displays an icon on the thermostat screen you
have to match.

Hi Sieghard,
How easy is it to install this smart thermostat? I am usually Okay with

need an electrician to install it or you think I can do it myself?

Hi, Sieghard!

Can you write a line or two about HoneyWell accessibility? I already found some
HW products for European market, T6 is indeed among them. Just need
accessibility confirmation.

Thanks!

Hi Reggie,

Whether you can get buy with only an iPhone you should know and it almost
sounds like you already answered it since you said you never use your Mac Mini.
I personally don't think an iPad will give you that much more in terms of
useability, definitely it would for a sighted person or somebpdy with partial
vision which is still useful.
An Apple Watch is primarily designed to be a health/fitness device, yes it
gives you notifications and you can even make phone calls with it, sent a
brief, already provided answer to a text message or use it for Apple pay, but I
doubt you would find yourself trying to send lengthy messages and so on. If you
have home automation devices it can also be useful.
For me personally a PC is essential, for one thing I have my retail business
and need to use Excel on a daily bases as well as my Windows-based point of
sale software, but I know even if I were retired and would primarily do web
browsing, emails and so on I would not want to miss a PC. I have been using an
iPhone for almost 10 years now and consider myself a fairly advanced user, I
love how easy it is to do certain things with certain apps like Sonos for
example, maybe quickly check my bank balance or the weather etc., but I can't
stand the inefficiency of composing any sort of longer text whether it's an
email, writing a long note, a letter and so on let alone trying to use a
spreadsheet which many of us find useful even for personal applications. Yes, I
can use a bluetooth keyboard, but if I use a keyboard why on earth would I not
want to use a laptop or desktop with Windows and Jaws where writing and editing
text is so so easy. Also, I can almost guaranty that I would leave very
profficient iOS users in the dust when it comes to web browsing, maybe filling
out some online form, doing my online banking etc.'
If you have time and you don't mind the inefficiency and if it doesn't drive
you nuts then maybe an iPhone is OK, but there is a reason why people like
myself, Jonathan Mosen and many others who work or want to be efficient and
fast use a computer. I have not touched on the issue of costand I'm sure
somebody will point out how expensive Jaws is and all that. Yes, if you have to
buy it for the first time it is expensive, but if you own it and have kept it
up-to-date then I don't consider $120 every two years for a software
maintenance agreement expensive, it is $5/month and if it is not money you want
to spend then you can always learn/use NVDA. Apparently Narrator is also
getting another big boost with the Windows 10 fall update and it is quickly
becoming a viable option for a basic user just as Voiceover is on the Mac, all
you have to do is press Control+Windows Key+Enter and it starts up.
Ultimately everybody has to choose what works for them and while asking what
you asked is totally OK and it will result in different people giving you
different opinions you are in the end the best judge of what works for you.

Best regards,
Sieghard

I know this is an individual preference, but here is a question for
consideration. OK, OK, may be a couple questions. LOL.

I am interested in whether anyone only uses a mobile device and never a
computer, is that possible. I have a Mac Mini, but I never use it. if I decided
to trade in my Mac Mini, what would I replace it with? If another computer,
which Apple? If not, what device besides my phone should I consider; an Apple

computer with a small screen. Thanks for any thoughts.

I also use the B of A app. I don't have investments so haven't
experienced what you are saying on those pages.
I have, however, experienced something similar on the pages to pay
bills and to make transfers. Mostly towards the bottom of the page
when I'm trying to get to the next step or done. I didn't find it a
huge annoiance, I was just glad to be able to get to it at all without
a lot of trouble. This is probably not what you wanted to hear, but
that is what I have noticed, as you said, for a while.

RE: accessible apps for flights?

2018-08-01 Thread R Van Lant
I mainly fly on Southwest. The app is quite accessible for finding flights,
but I found the area where you fill in the passenger information horrible.
Knowing that Southwest agents are very willing to help over the phone, I would
likely look for flights on the app, then call to book them. The website used
to work for me, but something changed and I was recently having a really hard
time looking through flight options, which is why I went to the app.

hello all,
does anyone know of any fully voiceOver accessible apps for finding, booking,
and if possible checking in for flights?
I have tried a few, but haven't found any really accessible ones yet.
I will almost certainly mainly be using it for flights with in europe, so am
not really bothered about long hall stuff, but if possible, would like to have
the following features available to me.
1, a nearest, or favourite airports feature, so that it would for example, show
me flights from say, stansted, luton, or birmingham, before showing me ones
from say gatwick.
and 2, a airline and/or airport blacklist feature, that I could use for say
airlines where I have experienced particularly rubbish customer services, or
airports with particularly rubbish assistance.

I hope I'm not asking too much.

Well, Apple laptops, the current ones that is the MacBook pros, are expensive.
You can certainly still get a MacBook Air, and there are rumors that that line

overtime, I would see improvements in certain things like wordprocessing and
such. But last year, I bought a Windows machine, because I need to emboss
braille and read PDF files including tables with links that are accessible. I
don’t know if you have ever used windows, and if you haven’t, that was probably
a road you don’t want to walk down, especially if things like PDF files are not
a big part of what you need to deal with. I got frustrated with my Mac, because
of safari being busy. A lot. I have 16 gigs of RAM in the Mac Mini, so there
shouldn’t be any excuse for that kind of nonsense. Are use my phone for most
things. I would love something portable. I have an iPad mini 2, which I did try
in the past with a Bluetooth keyboard, and suffered from too many freezeups for
it to be a reliable system. Taking notes and having your keyboard freezape are
not a good combination. That problem could very well have been solved by now.

Re: what to replace a couple devices with

2018-08-01 Thread Esther Levegnale
Hi, All!

This is quite an interesting thread. I use my iPhone 7+ for just about
everything—from purchasing things, ordering groceries, and the like. I have a
Dell computer which I bought in 2011 and the only thing I do with that is do
word documents and print them on my Braille Blazer—yes, you read this
correctly—my Braille Blazer originally from Blazie Engineering. It’s a
dinosaur but it still works like a charm. I type readings for church that
people dictate to me on my computer, then use my Duxbury Braille translation
program and print them out on my Blazer. When that quits, I’ll probably write
my dictated material on my Focus 40 Blue and read them that way but for now, my
system works for me very adequately.

Anyway, that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it! ☺️

I do use mine for bank records, and I'd have a time managing them on my phone.
I am sure that some day, there'll be a way that I learn and probably use the
phone for everything. Why not? It's always handy.

Good questions Mary. I partly cannot figure out how to interact with my mini,
but most of all I would be stuck at my desk. It is also a 2015 Mini using an
old television for a monitor. I have only 4 gigs so I am not able to upgrade,
told you need 8 at least. If I could find someone to set it up so I could just
get onto it and learn I don't need it for heavy computing. However, nobody in
my family knows Apple. I was thinking if it was a laptop I wouldn't have to go
through a whole lot of gyrations just to use it since it would be all compact.
It frustrates me also because it doesn't talk on its own but needs a monitor
and/or headphones. So, yes, just frustrated with it. I agree, though. There are
just times when a computer can be valuable to have. Oh yes, my Mini also will
drive me to drink continually screwing up my desktop wanting to move from

I'm glad to say I have had no troubels with DropBox and VDR.
Did this just start? I've found once I set up Dropbox permissions in VDR, it

I also use an Apple Watch, kind of forgot about that. I do not think for me and
other device is something I need or want at this time. I could use an old
computer that belong to my husband and has been completely refurbished, but I
like what I am using right now.

Re: what to replace a couple devices with

2018-08-01 Thread Mary Otten
Well, it seems to me the real question is: why don’t you use your Mac Mini? Is
it the fact that you were tied to the desk? Or is it the fact that maybe you’re
having issues with getting along with voiceover and whatever applications you
need to use there? I think rather than talk about what device to get, a better
approach might be to think about what it is you want to do with the device you
have or what you can’t do with the device you have. Identify those things, and
go from there. Just my two cents.

Re: Any Updates on Accessible sprinkler timers?

2018-08-01 Thread Denny Schwab
I use the Rachio app and find it very accessible. The only real issue
I have is that it does not tell you if something is selected or not,
for instance when you are trying to select which of the zones are
going to be watered on a given schedule. It is easy enough to work
around that though, since you can get the list of zones currently
selected when you have the schedule fully created, then just go in and
edit it by tapping on the zones you don't want included in that list.

Re: Accessibility of either DirecTV or Comcast

2018-08-01 Thread Robin Frost
Hi,
I can say Comcast’s x-1 platform and it’s speaking set top box along with their
xfinity apps for iPhone are extremely accessible and intuitive to use for me.
I give them a lot of credit for not just meeting a requirement but doing so in
a way that has been informed by the people for whom it’s intended to assist.

Subject: Accessibility of either DirecTV or Comcast

Hello there,

I was just wondering if any of you had good experiences with either DirecTV or
Comcast in regards to using the apps.

I’m only considering switching from what I currently have, but don’t want to
jump to something that’s not accessible.

I’d appreciate hearing from you about this.

Re: All sound randomly stopping on iPhone SE

2018-08-01 Thread Jessica Dail
Hi,
How do you usually carry the device on a daily basis?

If in your pants pocket, then yes, you may be bumping one of the buttons.

I’m not sure why all sound would just disappear.

Are you turning the volume all the way down by accident?

Thanks,
Jessica

All sound randomly stopping on iPhone SE

2018-08-01 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
Hello list,

So recently I’ve been dealing with an issue that’s been happening more and
more. While using my iPhone SE, be it dictating something or just regular
navigating, all sound will just stop. No Voiceover, no system sounds, no
Siri, nothing. Not even flicking the mute switch on the side of the phone.
Not even the little vibration thing it’s supposed to do.

Anyway, the first few times this happened, I was worried that my phone
bricked or died or something. I soon discovered that I could get sound back
by paring some headphones or plugging in headphones with the jack. VO would
be right there as if nothing happened.

Anyway, now when this occurs, I know to not freak out, but rather just pare
some headphones to get Voiceover back and then disconnect the same
headphones and then press the volume up button on the side of my phone and
VO will soon start blasting out of the speaker. That and the vibration will
come back on the mute switch if I flick it back and forth.

This was pretty rare and I figured it was just one of those random whatever
things that happens when you’re dealing with tech, but for the past ten or
so days to two weeks, it’s been happening nearly every day and sometimes
multiple times a day. ON a side note, I’ve also been getting the power off
screen without pressing and holding down the power button. I don’t know if
I’m pressing some other button/tap combination to bring it up, but I don’t
recall it just showing up like that before.

Has anyone else dealt with this issue? I checked my phone’s battery health
and it’s saying that it’s at 94% and is still supporting peak performance
for whatever that’s worth. I was thinking of taking it in later this year to
take advantage of the battery replacement program since it’s going on two
years that I’ve had it so I don’t know if this may have anything to do with
it.

Running the latest iOS 11.4.1.

Thanks,

Cristobal

Voicedream Dropbox Issue

2018-08-01 Thread Kelby Carlson
Issues with VDR just keep cropping up. This time it's an issue with
adding files. When I try to add a file from Dropbox, some of the folders
in Dropbox don't show up in VDR's list. i know they are uploaded to
Dropbox as they show up on the Dropbox app on my phone. I haven't tried
uninstalling and reinstalling VDR yet because my library is big and I'd
rather not restore it, but otherwise I'm not sure what to do.
