RE: query

2018-08-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Anthony,

One other piece of advice for email groups is this: if you ask a question and
several people answer and help you out, don’t send 2 or 3 or however many
messages with “Thanks, Tom” or “Alan, thanks for helping me with this” etc. I
know you probably learned that saying thank you is polite, but imagine on a
relatively high volume list like Viphone how many thank you messages there
would be if everybody thanked everybody else for answering a question. If you
really want to thank somebody find their email address in the email header and
reply to them rivately and hopefully a few others who read this will take it to
heart since lately these polite thank you messages crop up a lot. Maybe Mark
can also support me in this as the moderator so that you guys don’t think I am
making this up.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hey download an app from the App Store goes to your home screen first. If your
home screen is full, it will go to the next screen where there’s an empty
space. While downloading, I push the home screen, and then it will go
automatically to the screen where it is being downloaded. It will be the last
item closest to the dock on that screen. To move it, flick up and select drag
item. Then go to where you want to put it and tap on an item. You can then
select by flicking up either putting it before or after or on that item.
Dragging and dropping is much easier than it used to be Tom frank

Sorry, that was a bad choice of words on my part. I meant managing your
group subscriptions. For example, I can log into Google Groups with my
Google account, see the lists I've subscribed to, subscribe to new lists
and then go into the membership and email settings for that list and
have the posts go to any email address I have registered with my Google
account. I also don't manage any groups on Google Groups, but I am
subscribed to multiple lists, and I used to use multiple email addresses
to manage my posts for those groups, but I think they now all come to
the same email address.

voice based differences in pronunciation but there does not appear to be. I
even got some of the different voices _specifically_ to see if the
pronunciation was better.

I'm Australian and I hear the same problems in the Australian voices and all
the British and American ones.
Even though I'm Australian I'm used to hearing British and American TV all the
time and the program does not pronounce things even vaguely normally for those
countries either.

Given the severity of the problem I presumed there would be a website somewhere
where people were sharing their personal Pronunciation Dictionaries to fix all
these mistakes but apparently no-one even talks about sharing them as far as I
can see.
(I was looking for this prior to putting huge amounts of work into my own, to
save duplication!)

For examples (I'll try and dig up others later)

bringer is always pronounced to rhyme with fringer instead of ringer like it
should be.
black-eyed or black-eyes is always pronounced blackies (That one makes me
cringe)

I'd imagine someone out there has a personal dictionary that's a few pages long
and includes regexes and all kinds of things, and yet this topic seems to go
undiscussed?

Anyway, at the very least is someone starts searching for the same issue
hopefully they'll find this from now on!

Hi, Everyone.
I'm switching from DSL to using TMobile for both phone and internet service.
The DSL goes away for real next week Friday, so I'm trying to get used to being
without it.

My biggest problem has been not being able to download BARD books using the
TMobile data. The cellular data and personal hotspot are both turned on. When I
double-tap to download a book, it says, "Cued for download", and stays that
way. The book's been in the download cue since yesterday morning, and nothing
changes even though I leave the app open and have given it lots and lots of
time to try to download.

Has anyone else had this problem? What am I missing?

Thanks,
Dani

Sharing Voice Dream Reader Pronunciation Dictionaries

2018-08-09 Thread Evan Gibson
I've been using Voice Dream Reader and trying to find a good place to talk
about it and this seems to be one of the few places it ever gets discussed.

I've found that there are huge problems with the default pronunciations
that apply to ALL voices used. I would've originally thought that there
would be voice based differences in pronunciation but there does not appear
to be. I even got some of the different voices _specifically_ to see if the
pronunciation was better.

I'm Australian and I hear the same problems in the Australian voices and
all the British and American ones.
Even though I'm Australian I'm used to hearing British and American TV all
the time and the program does not pronounce things even vaguely normally
for those countries either.

Given the severity of the problem I presumed there would be a website
somewhere where people were sharing their personal Pronunciation
Dictionaries to fix all these mistakes but apparently no-one even talks
about sharing them as far as I can see.
(I was looking for this prior to putting huge amounts of work into my own,
to save duplication!)

For examples (I'll try and dig up others later)

bringer is always pronounced to rhyme with fringer instead of ringer like
it should be.
black-eyed or black-eyes is always pronounced blackies (That one makes me
cringe)

I'd imagine someone out there has a personal dictionary that's a few pages
long and includes regexes and all kinds of things, and yet this topic seems
to go undiscussed?

Anyway, at the very least is someone starts searching for the same issue
hopefully they'll find this from now on!

Thanks,
Evan

RE: BARD and Personal Hotspot Not Getting Along

2018-08-09 Thread M. Taylor
Dani,

I am unclear as to your problem.

Are you attempting to download a BARD title directly onto your iPhone from
within the iOS app, itself? If so, then there is no need to have any personal
hot spot enabled.

If this is not the case, then please explain in greater detail.

Mark

Thanks,
Dani

I would say that robot vacuums are a technology that is still
developing. They are getting better but still cannot take the place of
a full sized vacuum. As has been stated, they can sometimes have
navigation issues and they are not as powerful as a full sized vacuum.
Definitely a technology to keep watching though.

BARD and Personal Hotspot Not Getting Along

2018-08-09 Thread dani pagador
Hi, Everyone.
I'm switching from DSL to using TMobile for both phone and internet
service. The DSL goes away for real next week Friday, so I'm trying to
get used to being without it.

My biggest problem has been not being able to download BARD books
using the TMobile data. The cellular data and personal hotspot are
both turned on. When I double-tap to download a book, it says, "Cued
for download", and stays that way. The book's been in the download cue
since yesterday morning, and nothing changes even though I leave the
app open and have given it lots and lots of time to try to download.

Has anyone else had this problem? What am I missing?

Thanks,
Dani

I have a friend with COPD, has one of those, named it Murphy, because of
Murphy's law.

So, a couple of years ago, when she went to move, she had someone cleaning her
apartment. The lady went to sweep outside, while
Murphy was running, and Muirphy tried to run away from home - out the door it
went. The lady grabbed it and got it back inside.

It is the app which controls the Roomba 980 robotic/connected vacuum cleaner
from the company iRobot.

It is one of these things which drives itself around your house vacuuming as it
goes.

My Dad and I bought the Neato smart robot vacuum for my Mom a couple of years
ago after she had hip replacement surgery and while it
sort of works, she says in her house it does sometime sget confused and she
says after every second cleaning she has to take it more
or less completely apart to clean the brushes and sensors otherwise it is even
worse.

My opinion and conclusion is that considering the price of these things they
are not worth the money at this point, certainly in my
Mom’s case she still needs a vacuum to manually vacuum from time to time, she
has a border collie who sheds quite a lot and while
she only has area rugs not wall to wall carpeting, the robotic vacuum sometimes
gets stuck and doesn’t properly clean the carpets.
Maybe if you house is all hardwood, laminate, tile or a mix of those and if
it’s not too cluttered with furniture and you live in a
clean environment these things may do the job, she lives on a ranch where
people at times come in tracking in dust and dirt and it’s
not a complete solution.

Sieghard

Hi. will be getting the IRobot 980 today. I am hoping that the app is voiceover
accessible. I was told that some of the app is
accessible. The battery level and status of the robot may not be read by
voiceover. If anyone is using this app, I would appreciate

Hi. will be getting the IRobot 980 today. I am hoping that the app is voiceover

Update to: Join Me in Reporting Twitter for iOS v7.28.2 VoiceOver Bug: Cannot Read Long Direct Messages

2018-08-09 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

More likely by happenstance than by design, the latest release of the iOS
Twitter app, v7.29.1, released today, has resolved the VoiceOver long direct
messages bug.

Be that as it may, don't forget to post your appreciation to the developers
for such a speedy resolution.

Read Long Direct Messages

Hello Everyone,

I am cross-posting this to both the V iPhone and Mac Visionaries mailing
list.

As of the latest Twitter for iOS app, v7.28.2, released July 24, 2018,
VoiceOver users cannot read long direct messages. If the DM goes beyond a
certain number of characters, speech stops. This was not the case in
previous versions of the app.

Please join me in reporting this issue.

The following is the review I posted in the App Store. You are welcome to
use any or all of it in your feedback to Twitter:

[BEGIN REVIEW]
[SUBJECT]:

VoiceOver users cannot read long direct messages. If the DM goes beyond a
certain number of characters, speech stops. This was not the case in
previous versions of the app.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1.
Make certain that VoiceOver is enabled.

2.
Select the Messages Tab located along the bottom row of the display.

3.
Attempt to read a direct message longer than 15 or so characters.

I am posting this review as a means of requesting that the Twitter
developers address this problem as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Apps usually go to the last page or the first available spot. So when I
download a new app, I go to the last page and check if it is on that page.

When you find it, flick down with one finger so it says edit mode and double
tap. Now flick down until you hear drag item. Double tap. Then touch where you
want the app, so if you want it after an app on another page, go to that page
and touch the app that you want the new app after.

Then flick down until you hear drop after x app. Double tap and it should say
drop complete.

This will take some practice and you want to hear drop ready before you do the
last double tap. I hope that helps.

Hi Carolyn,

If you have 6 or 8 contacts you call a lot it would be much easier to add them
to your Favourites tab in the phone app. Whatever tab you select will be
remembered when you open the phone app, e.g. if you have the Contacts tab or
text a lot selected then each time you open the phone app you are instantly in
contacts, if you select the Favourites tab you will always be in there.
To add somebody to Favourites, do the following:

1. Find the person in your contacts and double tap on it to open the contact 2.
Do a 4-finger single tap in the bottom half of the screen, it takes you to the
last item on the screen which Is"Share my location"
3. Swipe back to the left once and you find "Add to Favourites", double tap on
that 4. Swipe until you find the action you want to do, e.g. if you have a home
and mobile number entered for that person and you typically call them on their
home number, find "Call Home" and then double tap on that.
5. You are now back in your contacts details, you can to the scrub gesture or
double tap the back button to close it and go back to your main contacts list.
Now open the phone app and double tap on Favourites if it is not already
selected, you now see an entre for you rcontact with their home number and
double tapping on it will call them at that number. You can add a second entry
with their mobile number and depending on which of the entries you tap it will
call either their home or their mobile number.
I have currently 10 entries on my Favourites tab and they all show on the first
screen which means I can start at the top and run my finger down the screen and
Voiceover speaks each name along with "home", "mobile" or whatever number I
have selected for them. You can even add somebody to this list to text so that
if you double tap on that entry instead of calling it will start a text message.
If you think about how many steps are involved in calling somebody using the
contacts app using Favourites is super efficient. Here a summary:
Contacts app method:
1. Open the contacts app
2. Touch on the side to find the table index 3. Swipe potentially quite a lot
to find the letter you want 4. Touch the screen and, if necessary, swipe some
more to find the exact person 5. Double tap to open their contact 6. Find the
number you want to call them on 7. Double tap to call Using the Favourites tab
method:
1. Double tap on the phone app to open it, Favourites will be selected if you
last used it 2. Swipe right or run your finger down the screen towards the left
of the screen to find the entry /name you want, if mostly you have just 8 or 10
people on their you can probably learn like me to touch them almost at the
first try, sometimes I might be one or two entries above or below and I have to
swipe once or twice 3. Double tap to call

Hi,
Anthony, I know you're new to the iPhone. When we talk about ways to do things
on the iPhone, or shortcuts for doing them, we call them 'gestures'.
(Using 'Hot keys' implies the presence of a physical keyboard (Such as a

Hi Bill,

It is easy to find somebody's email simply by pressing Shift+Tab a few times
when the message is open until you get to the "From" field. I did this in
your message and after pressing Control+A and then Control+C, here is what I
get if I paste the content of the clipboard:

'Bill Gallik' via VIPhone Yours is another
example where your email is not part of that address, here is an example
from a message Donna posted:
viphone@googlegroups.com; on behalf of; Donna

As you can see this "From" field contains the "on behalf of" followed by the
person's email address. I don't know what those of you where the address
doesn't show up do differently, but even if you reply to the email the
address is simply not there, here is the header when I press Control+R to
reply to your email:

Only the Viphone email is given, if I wanted to reply directly to you I have
no way of doing so whereas with Donna's and most other posts I can just go
into the From field, put the Jaws cursor on their email, right click or
press Shift+F10 and select copy, this will copy only their email address to
the clipboard not the entire line which I pasted above and selected with
Control+A.

I’ve noticed a couple messages on this list commenting that, when someone
wants to reply directly to the sender of a specific e-mail message, they can’t
find that person’s address. Here’s a somewhat clumsy “work around."

First, reply to the message in question.

Then, locate the “Originator Line” and you should find that the e-mail
address of the person sending the message to which you wish to reply is
listed. Copy that direct e-mail address, go back to the “To” field -
deleting the list address and paste the sender’s address there instead.

NOTE: The above tip presumes a degree of proficiency with selecting, copying
and pasting text. If you are interested in using the tip but are
uncomfortable with text selection feel free to contact me directly at:

wfgal...@gmail.com

*No, the above address is not the one I’ve registered with on this list, but
that address gets much less traffic and will be much more convenient for me
to peruse!

Re: IRobot app accessible?

2018-08-09 Thread Mike Arrigo
I would say that robot vacuums are a technology that is still
developing. They are getting better but still cannot take the place of
a full sized vacuum. As has been stated, they can sometimes have
navigation issues and they are not as powerful as a full sized vacuum.
Definitely a technology to keep watching though.

Original message:

It is the app which controls the Roomba 980 robotic/connected vacuum
cleaner from the company iRobot.

It is one of these things which drives itself around your house
vacuuming as it goes.

My Dad and I bought the Neato smart robot vacuum for my Mom a couple of
years ago after she had hip replacement surgery and while it sort of
works, she says in her house it does sometime sget confused and she
says after every second cleaning she has to take it more or less
completely apart to clean the brushes and sensors otherwise it is even worse.

My opinion and conclusion is that considering the price of these things
they are not worth the money at this point, certainly in my Mom’s case
she still needs a vacuum to manually vacuum from time to time, she has
a border collie who sheds quite a lot and while she only has area rugs
not wall to wall carpeting, the robotic vacuum sometimes gets stuck and
doesn’t properly clean the carpets. Maybe if you house is all hardwood,
laminate, tile or a mix of those and if it’s not too cluttered with
furniture and you live in a clean environment these things may do the
job, she lives on a ranch where people at times come in tracking in
dust and dirt and it’s not a complete solution.

I also purchased the neato, and was super excited about this.

Once I got my longhaired golden retriever however, it had to go.

It wasn't picking up as much because the hair kept being tangled in the
brushes and it was more of a pain to clean.

Ended up getting a shark vac.

RE: IRobot app accessible?

2018-08-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It is the app which controls the Roomba 980 robotic/connected vacuum cleaner
from the company iRobot.
It is one of these things which drives itself around your house vacuuming as it
goes.
My Dad and I bought the Neato smart robot vacuum for my Mom a couple of years
ago after she had hip replacement surgery and while it sort of works, she says
in her house it does sometime sget confused and she says after every second
cleaning she has to take it more or less completely apart to clean the brushes
and sensors otherwise it is even worse.
My opinion and conclusion is that considering the price of these things they
are not worth the money at this point, certainly in my Mom’s case she still
needs a vacuum to manually vacuum from time to time, she has a border collie
who sheds quite a lot and while she only has area rugs not wall to wall
carpeting, the robotic vacuum sometimes gets stuck and doesn’t properly clean
the carpets. Maybe if you house is all hardwood, laminate, tile or a mix of
those and if it’s not too cluttered with furniture and you live in a clean
environment these things may do the job, she lives on a ranch where people at
times come in tracking in dust and dirt and it’s not a complete solution.

Sieghard

RE: Finding Out Who is Calling when Phone is Muted?

2018-08-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If the phone vibrates just touch the screen and Voiceover will tell you who is
calling.
If you want a Silent ringtone there are plenty of places where you can download
them, I have attached one here, but if you set it as your default ringtone and
if you have custom tones assigned to some contacts then those would still ring..

 Danny,

Have you considered creating a “Silent Ring Tone” or installing a very low key
MRA file such as birds twittering or a stream babbling?

You could use the onboard recorder to create a silent ring tone (making sure it
does not exceed 40 seconds) and then changing the extension from M4A to MRA and
installing that file via normal procedures.

Hello Rebecca,

I received both this message and the one from you, off-list.

For some reason, I cannot locate you in the Google Groups database.
Also, when I attempted to change your settings using an alternative
method, no account info was available.  I suspect that your account
has become corrupted.

So, at this point, I recommend that you simply unsubscribe from the
list using the link at the bottom of each post.

Then, when you're ready, subscribe to the list again.  You can also
contact either Cara or me, directly, when you're ready to rejoin so we
can send you an invitation, if necessary.

Take care and enjoy your vacation.
