Hi,

I apologize in advance it feels like I've posted more in the past month to this list than I have in the entire preceding year. However, I just keep running into things that seem to be broken. Today it's found in the app store.

If I am in the app store on the screen for an app I own and I click on "see all reviews" button and then "write a review" button I can easily select my stars and I can even enter my title text using dictation if I wish. However, once in the text field for the body of the review itself if I invoke dictation either by the two finger double tap or the dictate button on screen it matters not dictation only lets me speak two words at most before it cuts itself off. It is positively maddening I tell you; and I can absolutely reproduce it at will both on an iPhone 11 ProMax and an iPad Pro running the latest software. Even after rebooting and closing out of the app store and entering it again as I said I can absolutely reproduce the issue at will. Dictation seems to work fine elsewhere such as in the search field and even in the title of a review entry screen just not in the main body of the review text. If anyone can replicate this please join me in reporting this to Apple Accessibility.

I'm by no means a glass half empty or the sky is falling kind of girl and Apple certainly doesn't have the market cornered on persistent bugs but it is slightly disheartening to keep running into things that aren't working 1/3rd of the way through the yearly cycle for iOS. Here's hoping that patient and polite reporting of such issues will result in their being fixed so the "it just works" slogan can continue to ring true.

Take good care,

Robin

RE: unlocking a locked iPhone

2020-03-02 Thread kitty hevener
Finally, I write with a happy end to my unlocking a locked Iphone saga. After
the second try at filling out the online form for at, they did unlock the
phone. Apple verified the phone was unlocked. Yet, Verizon insisted it was
still locked. After hearing my story, David at the apple accessibility desk
asked the question which turned out to be the key to the solution. He asked if
I had updated the drivers on the Iphone. Of course I had not, that thought was
lite years from my mind!!! I downloaded the latest itunes for windows 7 and
went as far as I could before encountering a password error. Yesterday,
Patrick from the apple accessibility desk remoted in to my computer, cuz jaws
was not reading everything that I needed, got me well on my way to restoring
the phone in itunes. Unfortunately, at some point in the process, my computer
locked up. Patrick had tried to call back, but my friend had her phone on "do
not disturb" and didn't realize it. Finally, when I was emotionally spent and
mentally exhausted, I turned my phone over to the genius bar and begged them to
put me out of my misery once and for all!! They did not disappoint!! Sometimes,
it really does take a village to get an Iphone that comes from a different
carrier than the one u r using, to work as it should. To that end, I sincerely
thank you, the apple accessibility team, and the local apple genius, who
admitted he had never worked with voiceover till he saw my phone, for making
this used SE work as I had been lead to believe it would by the seller. A
couple of the access techs said they often encounter situations similar to mine
as the phone carriers really don't deal with the workings of the Iphones.

In conclusion, my takeaways, which I hope will benefit others who find
themselves in similar situations are:
1. The IMEI number is invaluable. With that number alone, Apple Accessibility
can tell you whether the device you are considering purchasing is locked or
unlocked. And, if it is locked, they can tell you what carrier has it locked.
The IMEI number is located in the "about section of the general menu in
settings.
2. Apple can not unlock a phone that is locked by a carrier such as AT
While you might find an online form to request an unlock, the carrier in
question may deny the request, especially if there is a balance due on the
account, stolen phone, etc. So, use that IMEI number to get the unvarnished
truth from Apple before you waste your hard earned money. If Apple says it's
locked, insist that the seller take care of unlocking it.
3. If you feel your carrier is giving you mixed messages such as telling you
your phone is locked, when you have verified that it's not, or in some other
way trying to sell you one of their specific phones, consult the Apple
Accessibility desk for troubleshooting assistance before allowing yourself to
be talked in to buying something you may not need or want.

Yes, you have to remove the case.
On the right side of the phone a little more than two inches from the bottom,
there is a tiny pinhole, the end of a bent paperclip works to push in until the
SIM card drawer sticks out.
Be very careful to get the sim card inserted in the right orientation.
It has been so long since I've done that, I'm not sure how to describe it.
This is where sighted help would be very useful.
After putting the sim card in the little drawer, just push it in until it is
flush.
Needless to say, you want the phone turned off when doing this.
When you power the phone up, there may be something your carrier needs to do to
finish activation.

If you mean 5G, then no. There has been lots of rumors that the 2020
iPhones will be able to access 5G, but nothing official announced from
Apple. I'm guessing we would not hear anything from Apple on this till
probably September, if they keep to their regular fall announcement
schedule for new phones.

Hi Ed,
What do you mean when you say location Hass to be on. I have location services
available. But that applies to apps I guess, like whether you want them to be
able to use location services and win. I’m not sure what you’re referring to
when you’re talking about it with respect to the HomePod.

No, I have not called Apple Accessibility, because it doesn’t really seem like
a voiceover issue. And my experience has been that if it’s not a voiceover
issue, they won’t help you. And I can understand why.

Re: HomePod Question

2020-03-02 Thread Mary Otten
I think it is transferring via airplay. It’s just quicker to do it with
handoff, if handoff is working well for you.
Of course, I could be wrong. But I don’t see how else it would be transferring,
even if it uses NFC which I don’t know. Isn’t it still using airplay? It
certainly uses Wi-Fi. You can’t do it unless your HomePod and your phone on the
same Wi-Fi network. It will not transfer if you’re using cellular.

The large button in the middle starts and stops cleaning. The ones on
the sides ... send the robot home and something I don't remember. I
use the iPhone app to control my roomba rather than the buttons.

RE: HomePod Question

2020-03-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The Sonos Move is a portable speaker which still uses the WiFi network or your
Sonos network if you have one of your players hardwired, it only switches to
Bluetooth when you are away from your home or outside where you are not
connected to your WiFi. As I said, it's all a matter of how discerning of an
audio file you are, for most a good Bluetooth speaker or headset sounds quite
good, but Bluetooth just can't compete with Airplay or WiFi or, of course, a
wired connection.
I had somebody once ask me which of two receivers I thought was the better,
both were around $500, so I told him he would have to decide for himself
because on my 20-year old high-end stereo system which has a Sonic Frontiers
tube amp connected to a custom-built electronic crossover and which drives
custom-built speakers and where a 250 Watt Bryston amp also connected to the
crossover drives a pair of 4-foot tall custom-built 12 inch subwoofers the
cables which connect the components cost more than $500.

Sieghard

I've never heard the home pod as we can't get them here in new Zealand.

I do however have a few sonos play 1 devices although they aren't Bluetooth.

But what I have heard playing audio is the sonos move and it sounded pretty
bloody good to me.

And they are similar in how they work to the home pod I believe.

The other speakers I personally like are the UE boom for which they have just
added a new device called the hyper boom,

 Might be worth a look

Hi Arnold. What I'd do, is invest in a good bluetooth speaker. I've got some
very nice bluetooth speakers, and I can listen to bookshare books by using
voice dream reader and the ebooks sound just fine. I'd never purchase a home
pod, they sound kind of junky to me. I like my bose revolve plus speaker.

The other setting that you might have to check and make sure is on is location
for both your HomePod and iPhone. If I turn off these settings the hand off

Carolyn, the first thing, take your phone out of the case.
2. locate a very tiny whole on the side of the phone. I don't know where it
would be on the i11, however for an example, the iphone se sim card would be
on the right edge as you're facing the phone. You'll need a paper clip to
pop the tray with the sim card out. The paper clip, That's my preferred tool
since it works well.note: the tray and the sim card both, are very tiny, so
if you do happen to pop your sim card out I recomend doing it over
something, so it won't get lost. if you have any questions just ask and good
luck.

Hello,

Sometimes, it takes a bit of time for the IMEI to show up as unlocked after
it has been locked. It is worth sticking a sim in and seeing what happens if
you have followed the process and are unlocked.

=Thanks.

The sim removal tools are 5 bucks for like 10 or 20 I believe.

You can purchase a bag of sim tools from amazon. They cost next to nothing.

Thanks. That makes sense.

One reason I wanted to know is if I ever decided to get another phone that I
might also want to use. I know, probably that doesn't make sense to some
people, but I know you get it, Wayne and Arlene.

The paper clip, That's my preferred tool
since it works well.note: the tray and the sim card both, are very tiny, so
if you do happen to pop your sim card out I recomend doing it over
something, so it won't get lost. if you have any questions just ask and good
luck.

Where is it that you insert the SIM card. I wish I'd have thought to ask Ray
at Wal-Mart, when I got my phone. I guess you have to take the case off the
phone to get to it?

Hello,

Sometimes, it takes a bit of time for the IMEI to show up as unlocked after
it has been locked. It is worth sticking a sim in and seeing what happens if
you have followed the process and are unlocked.

RE: Importing IntoVoice Dream Reader

2020-03-02 Thread Richard Turner
Alex, it may not be "designed" to be a music player, but it can be used that
way if you do wish to use it instead of the music app. I don't know why one
would want to do that, but that is a fine use.

Re: Help! iRobot Roomba owners

2020-03-02 Thread Kimber Gardner
The large button in the middle starts and stops cleaning. The ones on
the sides ... send the robot home and something I don't remember. I
use the iPhone app to control my roomba rather than the buttons.

Although, if you do want to listen to a zipped album, I do believe it
would work. I have uploaded single music tracks into VDR and they
have worked quite well.

Re: Importing IntoVoice Dream Reader

2020-03-02 Thread Richard Turner

as far as I know, you cannot get music from the music app on the iPhone into
Voice Dream Reader.
Apple locks that down.
Joshua's method is the way to do this.

Re: unlocking a locked iPhone

2020-03-02 Thread Dave

You can purchase a bag of sim tools from amazon. They cost next to nothing.

Or find a paper clip and use that,

I've lost so many of the sim removal tools but I can always find a paper
clip somewhere.

Each new iPhone comes with a little wire gadget which is meant for popping
out the SIM tray.

Thanks. That makes sense.

One reason I wanted to know is if I ever decided to get another phone that I
might also want to use. I know, probably that doesn't make sense to some
people, but I know you get it, Wayne and Arlene.

The paper clip, That's my preferred tool
since it works well.note: the tray and the sim card both, are very tiny, so
if you do happen to pop your sim card out I recomend doing it over
something, so it won't get lost. if you have any questions just ask and good

=Thanks.

Christopher thanks for sharing. I wonder what the author's credentials are
for writing the article. After the second attempt, at unlocked my phone.
While the article makes me think I may be in luck that my phone will work on
Verizon, apparently the only way to know for sure is yet one more trip to
the store. I am sooo hoping for a happy ending smile!!

Re: Importing IntoVoice Dream Reader

2020-03-02 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
That isn't what I'd do. What I do, is upload a zipped mp3 file into
dropbox on my computer, then I find the add button in voice dream
reader, find dropbox, then I find my uploaded file then download and
it goes to voice dream reader. You can do this either with zipped mp3
files, or with individual mp3 files.

There's a very nice speaker called The Tribit Stormbox speaker that is

 Hi Robert,
What you did with your book share book is exactly what I have done
when I have tried the handoff feature. It’s just that most of the
time, it doesn’t work for me. That’s my problem. And I don’t think
there has ever been a time when it has worked with a voice over
voice. I actually have a stereo pair. I don’t know why that should
make a difference. I’ve tried both parts of my stereo pair, and both
 work intermittently as described.
