MODERATOR NOTE: Regarding Political Commentary

2020-03-18 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I am receiving a growing number of off-list complaints about members who
include their personal political views in their list-posts.

Do not do this. If you have political opinions that you would like to
share, please do so in another forum.

Let's stay strong in our mission of supporting each other on the exciting,
ever-changing path of Apple product-related technology.

In short, leave your political opinions as the proverbial door, before you
post in this community.

There is no need to reply to this thread.

Thank you,

Mark

Re: iphone 8 or XR?

2020-03-18 Thread Eric Caron
Yes,

I set up my thumb, a finger on my right hand and one on my left. But
results were very poor. But than again When I needed a background check for
my last job I could not get usable fingerprints. I went back 5 times. Finally
they gave me special status as I had no usable fingerprints. This was from
many months of hands on construction on my home restoration.

I liked the idea of the finger print but Face ID is working much better for me.

I’m now having similar finger print problems on my Mac. I got it working again
but then once I started some outdoor projects my hands got rough and it sopped
working.

Here is hoping for Face ID for my Mac! Or for using my iPhone to confirm
identity on my Mac!

Best,

Eric Caron

Re: Can I use an iPod without a phone number?

2020-03-18 Thread Kelly Pierce
If you are going to use your iPod with a student, you should wipe your
device and set it up as a new device for your student, who would
create her own Apple ID. She may not want to create an Apple ID, but
it is necessary to optimally use Apple devices and services.

Re: Can two mobile phones use the same number (used to be Can I use an iPod without a phone number?)

2020-03-18 Thread Kelly Pierce
Ann,

No, two phones cannot share the same phone number. As a teacher, you
would not want them to any whey. The student can be free to use the
teaching iPhone without worry of changes to her phone service.

I suggest the iPhone instead of the iPod because the big benefit of
the iPhone is its location based services. To use these services,
someone needs a cellular connection. I would suggest you obtain a
cheap pre-paid cell phone plan from a T-Mobile reseller. Some cost as
low as $10 a month. It has more than enough data to learn navigation
apps along with other location apps, like weather apps. She can also
make real phone calls from the device and enter contacts that could be
backed up into iCloud. A contact’s address could be selected for
turn-by-turn guidance from her doorstep to her destination. Doing it
on the cheap with a Wi-Fi only device prevents a real world training
experience. Here’s a link to some cheap MVNO plans:

All recording apps will record until your iPhone runs out of memory.
You can tell Siri to record a memo, but I don't think you can tell it to stop
recording. I've never tried but I suspect that once the mic is being used to
record, Siri is unavailable.
HTH,

Headphones with no microphone will allow her to use the built-in microphone.
The Voice Memos app on the iPhone is simple and quite good.

Subject: Looking for A Simple Unlimited Voice Recording App for iOS.

Hope everyone is having a blessed day!

I'm trying to assist a friend with a project she's taking on.

She wish to write a book, but is going the ghostwriter route.

Her plan is too record all of her thoughts via voice recording app on her
iPhone 8.

The problem she's running into is that her voice is being recorded, but so is
VoiceOver. That isn't acceptable, especially when someone else is listening to
the recordings to take notes.

Can someone suggest too me a simple voice recording app for iOS that can be
stopped and started with Siri?

If no such app exists, something that is easy too operate if Siri is
disabled/turned off. Maybe by hitting the up (Start) or down (Stop) volume key?

Having no time restrictions on how long the recording can be would be nice too.

Any suggestions?

Here in Canada it's best to just read what's on CBC News and their app is quite
accessible and of course you can turn on Notifications.
It's good to stay informed, to isolate yourself as much as possible and to do
what you can, but being bombarded by all sorts of different notifications where
many probably say the same thing just drives you crazy.
Now that the US President has finally accepted the fact that this is a real
crisis and threat and not a fake news campaign instigated by the democrats he
and the rest of the administration who supported him finally have done their
typical 180 and now are actually doing something. It would have been good if
this had happened 3 weeks ago, but let's hope that in 4 to 6 weeks the worst of
this is over and we are on the downslope of it.

RE: iphone 8 or XR?

2020-03-18 Thread Carolyn
When I had fingerprint ID, I used my thumb. I figured it was the least likely
to get a nick or something causing a problem.

Hi Sieghard

I was so happy to get a face recognition iPhone for exactly those
reasons. Though my Vermont weather isn’t as bad, the wood working and hard use
of my hands in projects caused my finger print reader to rarely work. I was
often redoing it so it would work for a little while.

I have found that I can be subtle when opening my iPhone. As all it
has to do is sort of see my face and it clicks on. I have it on the setting
that doesn’t require eye contact.

Now if only my talking tape measure and audible level could be controlled by my
voice that would be great!

Is there a email list for blind wood workers out there!
Or, maybe those working on vintage cars?

One more related thing. I did struggle a little to learn the gestures that
replace the home key. I was trying to do them from a podcast description. It
took me some practice and I did have some frustration. But, now I prefer the
gestures and miss them when using older iPhones.

It sure is, I use it all the time. It even has magic tap functionality
where you can have it do a few different things such as start and stop
or pause the recording. The magic tap is a two finger double tap.

All recording apps will record until your iPhone runs out of memory.

The one I use is called HQ recorder. I believe it's $3.95, however it's
well worth every penny you'll pay for it. It supports many different
file types and even has all of your typical sharing options along with
wifi transfer.

RE: Corona Virus Alerts: How to get news updates on your phone right now, cNet

2020-03-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

2020-03-18 Thread Simon A Fogarty
And from what I've heard from someone that worked in Canada as a fireman
Taking your gloves off in the cold, isn't really a good idea.

I have to admit I had trouble when I cut myself trying to open a phone with
touch id,

Can't think how bad it is for you after you've been working in the workshop.

Yes, Touch Id may let you unlock the phone while it's in your pocket or in a
belt holster, but it's different strokes for different folks. I live in
northern Canada and I'd love to have Facetime since then I wouldn't have to
take off my gloves every time I'm outside and want to unlock my phone and for
us up here that is probably about 5 months out of the year. Then there are the
times when I spend more time in my woodworking shop and when Touch Id simply
won't work because either my fingers have too many cut and cracks in them or
they are full of glue which even when properly removed usually messes up Touch
Id for a few days.

I recently went from iPhone 7 to XR.
Getting used to the large screen and no home button took about 2 minutes.
I really loved Touch ID and I was a bit skeptic.
However, Face ID is simply brilliant.
