That would be a requirement, but I haven't seen anything else on Amazon in a
long time. I can't even remember what the other standard which exists was
called, but I think it has gone the way of the Dinosaurs.

They are a dime a dozen on Amazon, OK, maybe not quite a dime, but you can pick
up wireless charging pads for $15 or $20. I probably would advise to make sure
it specifically mentions fast charging for the iPhone and that it is "Made for
iPhone" labelled, this may up the price a bit, but you won't go wrong with
anything from Belkin or Mophie and such brands.
What you get is basically a round disk about th esize of a coaster for a glass,
3-4 inches in diameter, put it where you want it, plug it in and then just lay
your iPhone on top and it will charge.

Take care,
Sieghard

Hardware typically is very insignificant during WWWDC, it's all about the new
features of the various software platforms and traditionally iOS has always
taken up a big portion of the time.
And let's not downplay photos on the Apple watch, after all, if you have the
44mm watch that is 1.73 inches not a measly 1.5 inches.

2021-06-07 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hell, I’m listening to the presentation now and currently at the health
features update.

>From what I’ve heard so far,

I’m kind of thinking I’m getting in above and beyond my requirements level.

Some of these new to come features sound pretty far out there,
To the point I think, as cool as that feature sounds,
Why do we need it,
Or more to the point, do we need it?

Are we starting to get lazy

It’s almost like the IOS 15 OS will do everything for me except make my coffee
in the morning, and sleep for me at night.
Or should that be the other way around,

Don’t get me wrong,
This stuff sounds very very cool and helpful,
But really, do I need to know when I’m going to fall over?

But we in New Zealand wont get the benefit of a lot of these features because
our systems aren’t up to stratch

Like my medical test requests / results, I don’t believe we have the
inferstructure in our medical systems to get this without jumping through rings
of fire!

But still.

Lets see where this goes once the os is actually updated.

RE: WWDC

We will be releasing a full wrapup shortly on the Blind Tech Guys podcast.

Cheers,

I am really surprised to come home tonight and to find virtually nothing about
today's WWDC keynote. I guess the good old days are over when the Viphone list
had 200 messages on a day when Apple delivered a keynote.

RE: iPhone 12 Pro Max Unboxing Warning

2021-06-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
They are a dime a dozen on Amazon, OK, maybe not quite a dime, but you can pick
up wireless charging pads for $15 or $20. I probably would advise to make sure
it specifically mentions fast charging for the iPhone and that it is "Made for
iPhone" labelled, this may up the price a bit, but you won't go wrong with
anything from Belkin or Mophie and such brands.
What you get is basically a round disk about th esize of a coaster for a glass,
3-4 inches in diameter, put it where you want it, plug it in and then just lay
your iPhone on top and it will charge.

Take care,
Sieghard

It's a pad that you lay your phone on and it charges your device by just having
it sit on the top of the pad,

They are plugged in to a mains power supply but don't have cables connected to
the phone as such.
Belkon make a few,

Um,

Yes steve,

This has been so since late 2020
After apple advised that they wouldn't be supplying charging bricks with
phones any longer.

You don't have to use the Usb-C to lightening cable,
You can use an older lightening to usb-a and associated charging brick it just
wont charge as quickly.

Or purchase a magsafe charger for your iPhone 12, or even wifi charging pad.

The stock package for an iPhone 12 Pro Max comes with a charging cable, but no
charger. This is the first phone I've had, starting with the venerable 4S,
where no little charger cube was hiding ina nook or cranny in the main iPhone
box. What you do get is a charging cable, and thereby hangs another tale,
because you need to know that the end that's supposed to go into your little
charging cube wall wart that you don't get, that connector is not USB-A--it's
USB-C. So if you don't have any USB-C charger wall warts in the house, you're
going to be kiind-of stuck until you either get one or buy the accessory kit
from your phone store or provider that contains a case and the new wireless
MagSafe charging square. I got lucky--I didn't foresee this problem, but I did
want the wireless charging option plus the case plus the screen protection.

Oh yeah, no earbuds either.

The above aside, they've done a clever thing regarding installing the tempered
glass screen protector--you now get a plastic form that neatly fits over the
iPhone itself. What you do with it is, you turn it upside down and lay it on a
flat surface, oritent yourself with the tempered-glass screen protector so you
know which is the end with a notch cut out of it--that's the earpiece end, take
it out of its wrapping and sheathing, and lay it very gently adhesive side up
in the plastic form. Then, orient the phone itself in the same way as the
screen protector, remove its packaging covering, and lay it down into the form
on top of the adhesive backing of the screen protector. By doing this, the
screen protector is absolutely assured of being in perfect position on the
front side of the phone, and you don't get any fingerprints anywhere. The
slightest bit of oil from your fingers on the front side will diminish the
ability of the screen protector's adhesive side to stick to the phone's glass
face, and this new way of applying these rigid-glass protectors seems to be a
great thing, especially for blind people. I wish I'd've had this for the XS Max
last year. If I did, I probably wouldn't have put it on ever so slightly
crooked, and it might not have come off about five months later, also probably
due to my having touched the screen and polluting the surface with my body
fluids
(LOL) to orient it when putting it on.

I don't believe so,

We drive on the left so that if we have to grab our swords which would be in
the right hand, it's there for us to fight the people in the other lane,

I guess you guys just lean out the windows and shoot each other!

iPhone 12 Pro Max Unboxing Warning

2021-06-07 Thread Steve Matzura
The stock package for an iPhone 12 Pro Max comes with a charging cable,
but no charger. This is the first phone I've had, starting with the
venerable 4S, where no little charger cube was hiding ina nook or cranny
in the main iPhone box. What you do get is a charging cable, and thereby
hangs another tale, because you need to know that the end that's
supposed to go into your little charging cube wall wart that you don't
get, that connector is not USB-A--it's USB-C. So if you don't have any
USB-C charger wall warts in the house, you're going to be kiind-of stuck
until you either get one or buy the accessory kit from your phone store
or provider that contains a case and the new wireless MagSafe charging
square. I got lucky--I didn't foresee this problem, but I did want the
wireless charging option plus the case plus the screen protection.

Oh yeah, no earbuds either.

The above aside, they've done a clever thing regarding installing the
tempered glass screen protector--you now get a plastic form that neatly
fits over the iPhone itself. What you do with it is, you turn it upside
down and lay it on a flat surface, oritent yourself with the
tempered-glass screen protector so you know which is the end with a
notch cut out of it--that's the earpiece end, take it out of its
wrapping and sheathing, and lay it very gently adhesive side up in the
plastic form. Then, orient the phone itself in the same way as the
screen protector, remove its packaging covering, and lay it down into
the form on top of the adhesive backing of the screen protector. By
doing this, the screen protector is absolutely assured of being in
perfect position on the front side of the phone, and you don't get any
fingerprints anywhere. The slightest bit of oil from your fingers on the
front side will diminish the ability of the screen protector's adhesive
side to stick to the phone's glass face, and this new way of applying
these rigid-glass protectors seems to be a great thing, especially for
blind people. I wish I'd've had this for the XS Max last year. If I did,
I probably wouldn't have put it on ever so slightly crooked, and it
might not have come off about five months later, also probably due to my
having touched the screen and polluting the surface with my body fluids
(LOL) to orient it when putting it on.

RE: Treadmill app

2021-06-07 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Larry
NZ converted back in the late 60's before I was born,

And I still use inchs feets miles etc,

But then I use the metric system as well.

And besides,

You guys still drive on the wrong side of the road,
That wouldn’t' be an easy conversion.

RE: Treadmill app

2021-06-07 Thread Larry Wayland
I don't think that is quite right. .62 of a mile is one km. so two km is 1.24
miles.

RE: Texas man fired for selling school-owned iPads in the Apple Crime Blotter and Other Headlines, Apple Insider News

2021-06-07 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Carolyn,

Yeah in my case, I've got nothing on my phone worth while steeling it for

But if it did get lost or stolen,

I've got insurance to cover getting it replaced.

Nothing other than family and possibly pets is important enough to me to worry
about it getting lost or stolen.

Guess that's something we wont know,

But I'd expect that the victim accessed the information and passed it on to the
police,

I didn't think apple gave access to even the USA's FBI when it comes to
security or personal information of a customer.

While I don't see much of a connection to Voiceover/accessibility here, it is
only possible for the police to track anything through Find My if the owner of
the device provides them with their Apple Id and password.
As for Apple paying that is really also irrelevant since once Apple sells any
device it's not really their concern if said device is stolen. With Find My
they provide a tool which can often be used successfully and that' sthe end of
it.
And, Caroline, saying you have nothing to fear from the police these days isn't
much comfort for people who have experienced police brutality just because of a
misunderstanding, mistaken identity or because maybe they are black or native
American etc. After all, I wouldn't drop the keys to my house off at the police
station and tell them it's OK since after all I have nothing to fear or to
hide, there are bad Apples in the police service just as there are bad Apple
anywhere else (no pun intended).

2021-06-07 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Possibly the android crimes are harder to solve as the security to my android
usage isn't has tight,

There are apps you can get to lock things down on an android and find my droid
was the app used to find a device if lost,
But then it's easier to wipe an android device or at least was with my last
one 2 years ago,

Than it is to wipe an iphone etc.

As for shootings
Hey that is your countrys gun laws,

There are more guns in Canada per person than in the UsA but yet Canada doesn't
have anywhere near the same number of shooting related deaths as the usA.

Brazils pretty high in gun crime also

I wont say NZ is any better per head of population but it doesn’t happe every
day.

I'm with you Carolyn. But I wonder why there is so much crime relating to Apple
and not Android. Maybe it's because nothing is said about Android crimes. And
why so much shooting everywhere? It's so sad.

Family Share for additional calendars

2021-06-07 Thread Wayne Merritt
Greetings. I have Family Share enabled for our Family calendar. I
would like to share another calendar I created with my family. I've
looked around in the default Calendar app and Settings, and it seems
that the Family calendar is the only one that can be shared with
others in my household. I created a calendar called Doctor to help
track medical appointments and wondered if I can share that in
addition to the default Family calendar. Is this possible, and if so,
how would I go about it? I'm using an iPhone 11 running iOS 14.6 and
my wife has a XR running iOS 14.

Thanks,
Wayne Merritt

RE: Texas man fired for selling school-owned iPads in the Apple Crime Blotter and Other Headlines, Apple Insider News

2021-06-07 Thread Anne West
I'm with you Carolyn. But I wonder why there is so much crime relating to Apple
and not Android. Maybe it's because nothing is said about Android crimes. And
why so much shooting everywhere? It's so sad.

Guess that's something we wont know,

But I'd expect that the victim accessed the information and passed it on to the
police,

I didn't think apple gave access to even the USA's FBI when it comes to
security or personal information of a customer.

Is this saying that the police were able to access find my iPhone data, or that
the victim used it and told the police? The first one is a little worrying from
a privacy standpoint.

Treadmill app

2021-06-07 Thread Vicki W.
Hi,

I'm looking for a treadmill that can either be used with an accessible app or
touch screen on the treadmill itself, both options would be great. Any
suggestions?

Thanks.

My husband and I are totally blind and we just decided last week against asleep
bed precisely because we had questions about the remote. The company is all for
customer service but not for making things accessible. We could not determine
whether the app is accessible but the remote is basically unusable since there
are many keys that have rotors and you can forget where you are in the rotor
and then you have to choose up and down and enter we found the remote very
poor. We could not get our clerk in the store to get his iPhone hooked to one
of the beds there to make sure we could use the iPhone app but that probably
might work but for six to $10,000 you might want to consider other companies
that make pet pedestal style beds with more accessible remotes. For instance
mattress firm has pedestal beds and their remote it’s self has many fewer
buttons and is much more logical

Carla,
It is fairly accessible.

The one thing that was a little strange is that when going in to adjust your
head or feet levels on the adjustable base, you have to hold the up arrow and
the down arrow to make the adjustment.
The remote is not at all usable for a blind person.

RE: Texas man fired for selling school-owned iPads in the Apple Crime Blotter and Other Headlines, Apple Insider News

2021-06-07 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Guess that's something we wont know,

But I'd expect that the victim accessed the information and passed it on to the
police,

I didn't think apple gave access to even the USA's FBI when it comes to
security or personal information of a customer.

Is this saying that the police were able to access find my iPhone data, or that
the victim used it and told the police? The first one is a little worrying from
a privacy standpoint.
