Re: Problem with the Audible App for iOS 13.x:

2021-08-18 Thread Arnold Schmidt
You are running 14.7.1. There is no problem with that version, it is those
earlier than 14. I had just reset network settings over the weekend, I just did
it again, just to be sure, with the same results. Remember, it is not just
Audible, it is four apps over the last two days. I don't remember what two of
them were, I deleted them. The fourth one, Shazam, will still work with the
version that was on my phone, but it will not update. I probably will write
Apple Support later today.

hi,

I have had similar problems with the bard app, and my local talking book
library provided the following advice, which has worked every time.

maybe it will help you, too.

1.Close BARD Mobile
2.Open the Settings app on your iPhone
3.Choose BARD Mobile
4.Toggle on “Setting Initialization”
5.Open BARD Mobile again
6.Agree to the terms of use
7.Re-enter your username and password

RE: location tracking question

2021-08-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Kelly,

I don't think that is correct. If I go to Settings > Privacy > Location
Services and I turn it off completely I can still make and receive calls and
send and receive text messages.
I am pretty sure Location Services uses the phone's GPS to determine its
location and not cell towers.

Subject: Re: location tracking question

Yes, the iPhone’s location can be turned off entirely. However, you would not
be able to receive calls or text messages because your cellular carrier would
not know which cell towers could provide service to you. Therefore, cell phone
companies need to track the location of devices on their networks to provide
service to them. The people on this list want this kind of service. If you do
not, then you should use an iPhone touch or keep your device permanently on
airplane mode.

Otherwise, you can keep the cell service and determine which apps can access
your location under privacy in the settings app. Realize all apps owned by
Alphabet, including YouTube, google and google Maps constantly track your
location even when the app is closed. It is necessary to configure settings in
your Google account to stop google from hanging on to location information.

You guessed it, now the app will not install.

If the app was not compatible with my current version of iOS, then it should

This is just a heads-up for everyone.

Joshua, you are probably not on iOS 13 any more and it seems that this is where
Mark is encountering the issue.

I also have an iPhone 8. I must have updated audible successfully because it
doesn't show up in my list of apps that can be updated.
Hope you can get your problem resolved.

2021-08-18 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Donna, what IOS are you running? The problem Mark and I have reported is for
IOS older than 14. Once when I tried updating it on my IPhone 6, it told me
that I needed IOS 14. Now, it just stays at zero percent. Why was I offered
it? It is fine on this phone, running 14.7.1.

Re: location tracking question

2021-08-18 Thread Kelly Pierce
Yes, the iPhone’s location can be turned off entirely. However, you
would not be able to receive calls or text messages because your
cellular carrier would not know which cell towers could provide
service to you. Therefore, cell phone companies need to track the
location of devices on their networks to provide service to them. The
people on this list want this kind of service. If you do not, then you
should use an iPhone touch or keep your device permanently on airplane
mode.

Otherwise, you can keep the cell service and determine which apps can
access your location under privacy in the settings app. Realize all
apps owned by Alphabet, including YouTube, google and google Maps
constantly track your location even when the app is closed. It is
necessary to configure settings in your Google account to stop google
from hanging on to location information.

Voice dream reader and copying/moving individual tracks

2021-08-18 Thread 'Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.' via VIPhone
hi,

I have a document within voice dream reader which is essentially an album of
unprotected MP3 audio files.

I would like to select several for copy and/or move to a new folder.

Is this possible? If so, could someone please explain a step by step?

I believe I have done this in the past, but I have not been able to figure it
out in recent days. I would appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance. Keith

Then it is Microsoft Outlook, they are talking about services or protocols here
not apps and the Microsoft Outlook option is for any Outlook.com email accounts.
After you select it it will simply ask for your email address and password and
the rest will configure itself.
Keep in mind that if you have 2-factor authentication enabled for your
Outlook.com account you may have to log in and generate an app specific
password to use instead of your main password. If you did not enable 2-factor
authentication you can simply ignore this.

Subject: Adding anEmail Account to iPhone5S From outlook.com?

Hi, Group.
I am trying to add an email account to my iPhone5S from outlook.com but I am
not sure what to select from New Account, I mean when I am offered the
providers such as Yahoo, Microsoft Exchange etc. I do not select Microsoft
Outlook because it might confuse it with the Outlook mail client. Outlook.com
is a webmail service from Microsoft but iPhone5S does not include this service
in its option. Should I select Others?
If I do that, it wants me to provide the information such as SMTP……..
How can I add this Outlook account to my iPhone5S, please?
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks!

2021-08-18 Thread Richard Turner
The menu will be there no matter the source if using supported headphones.
I think the article confused things by mentioning the control center access in
the same breath as the fact Netflix is adding spatial audio; just after we
cancelled Netflix, of course.

Well, Ted Lasso is an Apple TV product, not a Netflix product. So I don’t know.
You should just be able to turn spatial audio on for your AirPods Pro, and
Collett good. this is weird.

I just tried with a pair of older plantronics headphones.

Apple says that spatial audio is an immersive experience using directional
audio filters to “play sounds virtually anywhere in space, creating an
immersive sound experience.” This will put surround channels exactly in the
right spot, even as you turn your head or move your device.

Here’s how Apple describes the spatial audio feature for AirPods Pro and
AirPods Max users:

Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking brings the movie theater experience
right to your AirPods Pro. By applying directional audio filters and subtly
adjusting the frequencies each ear receives, spatial audio can place sounds
virtually anywhere in space, creating an immersive surround sound experience.
Using the gyroscope and accelerometer in your AirPods Pro and your iPhone,
spatial audio tracks the motion of your head as well as your device, compares
the motion data, and then remaps the sound field so that it stays anchored to
your device even as your head moves.

iOS 15 takes Spatial Audio to the next level with a new Spatialize Stereo
option,
which simulates the Spatial Audio experience for non-Dolby Atmos content. This
allows AirPods Pro and AirPods Max users to listen to pretty much any song or
video.

2021-08-18 Thread Richard Turner
If you go to Settings, Accessibility, Airpods, under the Spatial Audio heading
you have a choice of having spatial audio off, only video, or audio and video I
think.
anyway, the explanitory message below that says:

When head tracking is turned on, spatial audio for supported audio and video
content will adjust based on your head movement. You can control spatial audio
in Control Center by touching and holding the volume slider, then tapping
Spatial Audio.
Try a one finger triple tap on volume there in control center and you find a
whole new menu of options for spatial audio. If on, it tries to provide that
experience even with recordings that are not in spatial audio.
I like it.
I hope this is true and I'm not accidentlly including beta features but I do
not have a device running 14.7 to double check;

Netflix has confirmed that it is now rolling out Spatial Audio support to its
iPhone and iPad applications. This enables an immersive experience using
directional audio filters, and it has been a long time coming to Netflix users.

A Netflix spokesperson has confirmed to 9to5Mac that the company has started
rolling out Spatial Audio support on iPhone and iPad on iOS 14. The news was
first reported by users on
Reddit
as well as in a report from
iPhoneSoft,

The toggle for managing Spatial Audio is located in the Control Center. The
spatial audio feature is exclusive to AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.

Using the gyroscope and accelerometer in your AirPods Pro and your iPhone,
spatial audio tracks the motion of your head as well as your device, compares
the motion data, and then remaps the sound field so that it stays anchored to
your device even as your head moves.

iOS 15 takes Spatial Audio to the next level with a new Spatialize Stereo
option,

Problem with the Audible App for iOS 13.x:

2021-08-18 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Okay, everything was fine with the Audible app on my iPhone 8 running 13.x
until I attempted to install the update, released 2 days ago.

Each time I tried to update, it failed. So, I deleted my currently
installed version with the intention of installing a fresh copy of the app.

You guessed it, now the app will not install.

If the app was not compatible with my current version of iOS, then it should
not show in my updates list.

This is just a heads-up for everyone.

Hi Kay,
That dictate button is for entering text into the search field or to field,
depending where you are.
Of course, once the keyboard is up because you have double tapped on an edit
field, you can also do the two finger double tap to start and stop dictation
rather than having to find that button.

The new contact or picture is just that, to add someone to your contacts or to
update their contact if their information has changed or they have a new photo.
One thing I went and turned off was the "mentions." Which means you get told if
you or someone in the conversation is mentioned ... I don't really need to know
that myself.

Re: questions about things I am finding in I O S 14

2021-08-18 Thread Mike B.
Hi Kay,

Take a peek at the thread below to turn off, Mentions.

From: Mike B
Go to, Settings / Messages, and open. Note: If you have iMessages turned
on you won't have the, Mentions, heading so, turn iMessages off to get it.
Swipe several times to the, Mentions heading, now swipe right 1 time to,
Notify Me, and turn this feature off.
Stay safe and take care. Mike.

From: Jasmine Kotsay
Hi,
I was wondering, even though I have iMessage on, I still have the mentions
heading in my text messages. I don’t really know what it is for, so
therefore
I don’t like it much. I’m going to try the steps you mentioned so that I can
see if I can get it to turn off.
Jasmine

From: Mike B
Hi Jasmine,
I'm sorry, I should have been more clear. I'm running iOS 14.3 on an SE
2020 iPhone. When I open, Settings / Messages, if I have iMessage turned on
I
don't get the Mentions heading to turn Mentions off. I need to turn
iMessages off in order for the SMS / MMS Heading, MMS messaging, Group
messenging...
+ the other settings to show.
Stay safe and take care. Mike.

RE: Hearing Aid Not Pairing on 12 Pro Max

Hi,
You have to go into MFI to pair hearing aids.

Subject: Hearing Aid Not Pairing on 12 Pro Max

For the first time in eighteen months, I got to go out to a public
gathering. Of course, I put a fresh set of batteries in my hearing aids
and inserted them into my ears, but when I tried using the phone with
them, not only were they not paired with the phone, but I could not do
the pairing. I opened Bluetooth Settings and found somebody's LG
something in the area with which I accidentally paired, but my hearing
aids weren't even on the list. My aids are not the type that can receive
firmware updates, so I know that's not the problem. However, I do have
an Apple Watch, and it was correctly paired with the phone. Is it
possible that it's not permissible to have a watch and aids paired at
the same time? Or did I possibly forget to set something up on the phone
correctly when I did the initial install and setup, moving from the 10S
(or XS) Max to the 12 Pro Max two months ago?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, gratefully received.

Re: VoiceOver Volume Always Low on 12 Pro Max

2021-08-18 Thread Richard Turner
The reason you should care about change with buttons, is that you can find
yourself with VO and the ringers at zero quite easily if you turn something
down with the buttons. That creates a bit of a rude awakening, grin.

1. The VoiceOver voice, no matter which one it is, is always low, lower than

Zoom, media playback such as Music, Web content, etc. It's this way on both the

2. When the VoiceOver voice begins speaking, it ramps up in volume from
something ridiculously low up to a higher level over the course of about three
syllables.

All of the above is quite annoying when I ask Siri a question, the Siri voice
speaks loudly, then the VoiceOver voice comes on, ramps up in volume over the
course of a few syllables, but it's never half as loud as the Siri voice. This
tells me I've got some level-limiting setting turned on which I can't find. Any

Re: Bard app won’t open!

2021-08-18 Thread Sherrie Gosling
Problem solved. I had to open settings app and go to bard. Then I had to turn
on initialization. When I opened the bard app there was the page to agree to
the terms. I tapped the Agree button several times using voiceover of course
but it did nothing except say selected. So then I tapped the second button
which just said star. It opened a screen that said I had to agree. So I had my
cited husband tap the agree button with voice over turned off and then he said
there was a start button which he tapped. It then opened the login screen which
I completed and all was well.

RE: Hearing Aid Not Pairing on 12 Pro Max

2021-08-18 Thread Paula Jordan
Hi Steve. This sounds basic and you probably did it already, but sometimes my
hearing aids don’t pair. I shut the phone down and bring it back up and they
pair again. Hope it's as simple as that.

Subject: Hearing Aid Not Pairing on 12 Pro Max

For the first time in eighteen months, I got to go out to a public gathering.
Of course, I put a fresh set of batteries in my hearing aids and inserted them
into my ears, but when I tried using the phone with them, not only were they
not paired with the phone, but I could not do the pairing. I opened Bluetooth
Settings and found somebody's LG something in the area with which I
accidentally paired, but my hearing aids weren't even on the list. My aids are
not the type that can receive firmware updates, so I know that's not the
problem. However, I do have an Apple Watch, and it was correctly paired with
the phone. Is it possible that it's not permissible to have a watch and aids
paired at the same time? Or did I possibly forget to set something up on the
phone correctly when I did the initial install and setup, moving from the 10S
(or XS) Max to the 12 Pro Max two months ago?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, gratefully received.

RE: [EXTERNAL] RE: Wireless charging pad

I would say Yes, some call it a stand and I call it a cradle, but the point is
that the phone stands in a somewhat more upright position and hence requires an
edge or whatever to rest against and that lines up much better than if you lay
it on a small round pad which has no edges

After I placed my phone on the wireless charger, I routinely touch the top

This being my first hands-on with a wireless

It is about 3.75 inches in diameter.

It comes with the “fast” charging block and a USB A

When plugged in properly to the pad, the USB C plug

I don’t know what “fast” charging means on an iPhone

Again, this is my first experience with this kind of charger; but that doesn’t
seem fast to me. Maybe I’m missing something.

2021-08-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Then it is Microsoft Outlook, they are talking about services or protocols here
not apps and the Microsoft Outlook option is for any Outlook.com email accounts.
After you select it it will simply ask for your email address and password and
the rest will configure itself.
Keep in mind that if you have 2-factor authentication enabled for your
Outlook.com account you may have to log in and generate an app specific
password to use instead of your main password. If you did not enable 2-factor
authentication you can simply ignore this.

questions about things I am finding in I O S 14

2021-08-18 Thread Kay Malmquist
As you know, I'm old and slow. A week or so ago,I updated my phone to 14.
One question that I have, is that I see dictate buttons all over the place.
for example at the beginning of the conversation list in messages and the
same in the native mail app. What are they for? Another question is, in
messages when I open up a conversation, I am getting a button that says
there is a new contact name or maybe it will be a new picture for this
contact. Of course, not on all of them. I am sure it is just as it sounds,
but what is this and what will that button do? I do experiment with other
things to figure out what they are but hope you all can tell me these.
There is a lot of change here, but much of it is positive. Thanks for any
help.

Re: VoiceOver Volume Always Low on 12 Pro Max

2021-08-18 Thread Steve Matzura
1. O-ho! It was the rotor, I didn't have Volume on the rotor, and when I
put it there, it was set to only 60%. I increased it to 100%, and now
the phone volume goes up as loud as it did on the old XS Max.

2. "Change with" is off. I don't care about that anyway, ringer and
other noises are at a good volume. I don't have to change those.

3. Siri volume now adjusted as per your instruction.

4. Yes, ducking is enabled.

The main problem and solution was #1. Now VO volume is the same as
everything else.

On 8/17/2021 7:36 PM, Richard Turner wrote:
First, is the VoiceOver volume in the rotor, and what do you have it
set at?

2. In settings, sounds, is change with buttons off?
3. Ask Siri a question that will take a little while to answer, like
the forecast for the week; and adjust the volume while it is speaking.

That should set the Siri volume.
4. Do you have Audio ducking enabled?

1. The VoiceOver voice, no matter which one it is, is always low,

calls, FaceTime, Zoom, media playback such as Music, Web content,
etc. It's this way on both the built-in speakers and headphone output.

2. When the VoiceOver voice begins speaking, it ramps up in volume
from something ridiculously low up to a higher level over the course
of about three syllables.

All of the above is quite annoying when I ask Siri a question, the
Siri voice speaks loudly, then the VoiceOver voice comes on, ramps up
in volume over the course of a few syllables, but it's never half as
loud as the Siri voice. This tells me I've got some level-limiting
setting turned on which I can't find. Any ideas welcome and

hi,

After I placed my phone on the wireless charger, I routinely touch the top
right corner of the screen to get the battery level announcement. If it is
charging it will tell me battery level 60% on AC power. If it is not accurately
placed on the charger, it just announces battery level 60%.

Hope this helps. Keith

I received mine yesterday. I don’t have experience to compare either,
but I did think it would charge a little faster. It is kind of fun just to lay
the phone down and have it charge. I do have to pay attention to not bumping it
off center. I also like just setting my AirPods Pro on the pad.

This being my first hands-on with a wireless charging pad, this
is what I can say.

It is about 3.75 inches in diameter.

It comes with the “fast” charging block and a USB A to USB C
cable that is 3 feet long.

When plugged in properly to the pad, the USB C plug clicks into
place so you know you have a good solid connection.

I don’t know what “fast” charging means on an iPhone SE 2020,
but I have a thin clear case that is rated to work with wireless charging pads.
My phone went from 10% to 100% in a little over three hours. Again, this is
my first experience with this kind of charger; but that doesn’t seem fast to
me. Maybe I’m missing something.

You do have to make sure it is in the center of the back of the
phone, which means that if you press the home button at all, it will teeter up
off the charger so you have to hold it down with the other hand. When I get a
phone with no home button, which I plan to do this fall, and if I keep the
charger, that won’t be an issue.

Thanks!
