Thanks, Richard. I can confirm that I successfully downloaded Codex 2.1.1 by
right clicking your link and saving as to my Downloads\Software folder. The
installation worked smoothly.

Anna and Allan,

OK, now if you want the slightly more recent version of codex, it works on my
site now.

Funny thing, when you don’t put the entire file name in the html link code;
things don’t work. Duh!

I just tested it and it works now.

I’m glad you got the file converted.

James Scholes did the version 2.1 in 2016 to fix some issues that I cannot
quite remember the details of, but for future reference if 2.0 doesn’t work,
try 2.1.

The 2.0 version doesn't work as well; but have you tried a right click and save

I will fix it by the morning.

I may just put both the Kindle and Codex files in a zip file so people can grab

Subject: Selecting Item from Extensive List

Can anyone tell me if there is a less tedious way to select from a long list of
items as opposed to going through the list one item at a time?

For instance, I live in Wisconsin so when I’m required to fill in my home
address and the state is in a selection list, I find it tiresome to need to go
one state (and in some cases, province) at a time. Also, many of my friends,
people whom I wish to add to my contacts, logging their birthday as appropriate
likewise gets quite tiresome - we’re talking in excess of 70 items in many
cases here.

There must be a better way! HELP!!! 

Hi Richard,

When I right clicked and chose to Save link as on your Codex 2.1.1 link, I got
a file named Codex 2.1.1 setup with no extension. When I attempted to rename it
with a .exe at the end and execute it, I received a file is corrupt error
message. I’ll wait till tomorrow and try again.

Alan and Anna,

The 2.0 version doesn't work as well; but have you tried a right click and save

I will fix it by the morning.

I may just put both the Kindle and Codex files in a zip file so people can grab
them both at once.

Here is a little section from his old web site. A few years ago, I wrote a
tutorial which guided people through the installation and configuration of
software for the purposes of gaining access to books purchased from the Amazon
Kindle Store. The guide proved popular, but it required heavy use of the
command line, making it unsuitable and daunting for quite a lot of people, not
to mention that it was an absolute nightmare to troubleshoot if anything went
wrong. Which it frequently did.
Subsequently, in 2014, I started to develop a small prototype application to
make the process easier and more intuitive, not only for people wanting to read
Kindle eBooks, but also for me when people needed help. I named it Codex, a
word used from the 16th century onwards to denote, now ancient, manuscripts in
book form. In the second half of 2015, I finally rewrote that prototype to
include the functionality I wanted it to have from the start, and the software
is now publicly available to download.
Please note, that you can only convert books you have purchased and only for
your use--you cannot share them with others without violating the copyright
laws and cheating the author out of their tiny royalties.
In order to convert your Kindle books with Codex, you will need to install
Kindle For PC version 1.17, which you can get here:

KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44183.exe

Since it appears that James Scholes no longer has a web site and I am unable to
find out anything about what may have happened, I'm offering his Codex 2.1.1
version that I had downloaded in August of 2018. That appears to be the last
version. I know it works with the Kindle for PC version 1.17 linked to on my
web site above.

I will try and give an explanation of how to use the app, but since the web
site is gone that previously had the information, this is coming from my memory
and experience. I'm open to edits or additions.

after you have installed the Kindle for PC version 1.17, and logged into it
wiht your Amazon/Kindle ID, be sure to not allow it to update the software!
Then, install Codex from the link below.

When you download a book with the Kindle for PC, take note of where the
download folder is located and find the . .azw file, which will have a
meaningless name like: "B079DYG6L7-EBOK.azw."
Now, bring up the context menu with Shift+f10 or the applications key and press
the letter x. This will open the codex conversion screen.

Most all the book apps, Nook, Kindle, Apple Books, will all read
ePub books.

Voice dream Reader is by far the most accessible way to do this.

Hi everyone,

I purchased  a Kindle eBook on my phone and was told, "VoiceOver
does not support this content." It's a Jewish prayerbook, and odds
are that it's pictures of the pages, rather than the actual text. I
know there used to be software that could convert Kindle eBooks into
accessible formats. If I end up with an image-based file, such as an
images-only PDF, I can run it through Voice Dream Reader to
recognize the text, so I'm fine if the software creates an image
file. Does anyone know of software that can do this? I have access
to computers running MacOS and Windows, so either is fine.

Thanks so much for any help! I'd like to have this for my nephew's
bar mitzvah in a couple of weeks.

Best,
Anna

include the functionality I wanted it to have from the start, and the software
is now publicly available to download.

I arrow down once to the convert to submenu and right arrow.
I get the following options:
* Kindle
* Microsoft Word 2007
* ePub
* Compressed HTML
* Mobipocket
* PDF
* Rich text format
* Plain text

I hav no idea what to do with Compressed html files that end up with an
extension of htmlz. However, I use the ePub option and books read great in
Voice Dream Reader and retain all the headings, chapters, etc. Once you pick a
format to convert your Kindle book to, press enter and wait for it to tell you
it is done.

Then I tab to open folder, which takes you to the default folder Codex created
when it was installed where you can then copy your converted file wherever you
wish.

That is what I can tell you. Here is the download link for the Codex program.

That's excellent, Richard. I'm not surprised you're like me and never take it
for granted that just because an installation or setup file of a program that
was once available on the web will always be available forevermore. I always
save the setup file for any programs installed on my computer to a
Downloads\Software folder and also have the Codex setup file for version 2.0 if
the version you have gives anyone a problem.

Hi Richard,

I hope Codex by James Scholes is still available. When I executed the link to
the Codex project provided in your link below, I received a Error 1016 Origin
DNS error. I also got this error when I tried executing a previously made
bookmark to Codex using Firefox.

Hi Anna,
Here is a snippet from my web site's Useful Apps page:
I just did this with a book today in fact.
Codex by James Scholes
Here is a little section from his web site. I encourage any avid readers to
follow the link below and read about it and install the utility.
A few years ago, I wrote a tutorial which guided people through the
installation and configuration of software for the purposes of gaining access
to books purchased from the Amazon Kindle Store. The guide proved popular, but
it required heavy use of the command line, making it unsuitable and daunting
for quite a lot of people, not to mention that it was an absolute nightmare to
troubleshoot if anything went wrong.
KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44183:

Codex project web site:
http://jscholes.net/how-to-remove-drm-from-kindle-books-with-codex-2/

I use the convert to ePub and then put it in Voice Dream Reader and you get all
the headings, etc.

I very much doubt it will work with images. IN fact, I'm pretty sure it won't,
so I hope the book also has real text and the pictures are just getting in the
way.

HTH,
Richard

Hi everyone,

I purchased a Kindle eBook on my phone and was told, "VoiceOver does not
support this content." It's a Jewish prayerbook, and odds are that it's
pictures of the pages, rather than the actual text. I know there used to be
software that could convert Kindle eBooks into accessible formats. If I end up
with an image-based file, such as an images-only PDF, I can run it through
Voice Dream Reader to recognize the text, so I'm fine if the software creates
an image file. Does anyone know of software that can do this? I have access to
computers running MacOS and Windows, so either is fine.

Thanks so much for any help! I'd like to have this for my nephew's bar mitzvah
in a couple of weeks.

Best,
Anna

You can read your Kindle books on VDR if you use Codex to convert them to ePub.

Re: accessing a Kindle eBook that refuses to play nicely with VoiceOver

2022-05-03 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Malcolm,
Along time ago, I had caliber, but it was not accessible at that time. Do you
have an add-on or a script for whatever your windows screen reader is, or did
they actually make it accessible? I had the Kodak’s program, but then my Kindle
updated and Kodex no longer worked. It’s my understanding and I think richard
said this, that you have to have a certain version of Kindle. So I think that
means I would have to uninstall Kindle thereby losing a whole lot of downloaded
books which would have to be re-acquired by download.

Most all the book apps, Nook, Kindle, Apple Books, will all read ePub books.

Voice dream Reader is by far the most accessible way to do this.

Hi everyone,

I purchased a Kindle eBook on my phone and was told, "VoiceOver does not support
this content." It's a Jewish prayerbook, and odds are that it's pictures of the
pages, rather than the actual text. I know there used to be software that could convert
Kindle eBooks into accessible formats. If I end up with an image-based file, such as an
images-only PDF, I can run it through Voice Dream Reader to recognize the text, so I'm
fine if the software creates an image file. Does anyone know of software that can do
this? I have access to computers running MacOS and Windows, so either is fine.

Thanks so much for any help! I'd like to have this for my nephew's bar mitzvah
in a couple of weeks.

Best,

Alan,
Thanks for the heads up.

I sent a message to the list, which you probably already saw. It is now
available on my web site.

It is linked off my useful apps page.

KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44183:
http://turner42.com/KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44183.exe

Codex project web site:
http://jscholes.net/how-to-remove-drm-from-kindle-books-with-codex-2/

I use the convert to ePub and then put it in Voice Dream Reader and you get all
the headings, etc.

I very much doubt it will work with images. IN fact, I'm pretty sure it won't,
so I hope the book also has real text and the pictures are just getting in the
way.

Richard

Subject: accessing a Kindle eBook that refuses to play nicely with VoiceOver

Best,
Anna

See the new message I just sent to the list titled, Codex by James Scholes is
now on my web site, with a link to the last version of Codex 2.1… and an
explanation of its use.

I use that program a lot and wouldn’t want to see it vanish.

It works great so long as you follow my steps.

Hi Richard and alan,

First, Richard, thanks for the info. However, I just found some info at

https://github.com/jscholes/codex

and it's not good. James Scholes is no longer supporting the software. Github
has the source code at the link I mentioned, but it would require knowledge of
Python and various other tools to make it usable. I know people move on and
can't support projects forever, but what a shame, especially since there don't
seem to be a lot of other options. Richard, do you, by any chance, have the
documentation and the Codex executable? If so, could you possibly create a
download link for them? I totally get it if this isn't possible.

Thanks a lot,

Anna

Thanks to Alan Lemley for discovering that James Scholes web site seems to
be no more. Never fear, I had kept the last version of the Codex
installation file so please read on.

Here is a little section from his old web site. A few years ago, I wrote a
tutorial which guided people through the installation and configuration of
software for the purposes of gaining access to books purchased from the
Amazon Kindle Store. The guide proved popular, but it required heavy use of
the command line, making it unsuitable and daunting for quite a lot of

Subsequently, in 2014, I started to develop a small prototype application to
make the process easier and more intuitive, not only for people wanting to
read Kindle eBooks, but also for me when people needed help. I named it
Codex, a word used from the 16th century onwards to denote, now ancient,
manuscripts in book form. In the second half of 2015, I finally rewrote that
prototype to include the functionality I wanted it to have from the start,
and the software is now publicly available to download.

In order to convert your Kindle books with Codex, you will need to install
Kindle For PC version 1.17, which you can get here:
KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44183.exe

Since it appears that James Scholes no longer has a web site and I am unable
to find out anything about what may have happened, I'm offering his Codex
2.1.1 version that I had downloaded in August of 2018. That appears to be
the last version. I know it works with the Kindle for PC version 1.17 linked
to on my web site above.

I will try and give an explanation of how to use the app, but since the web
site is gone that previously had the information, this is coming from my
memory and experience.

Now, bring up the context menu with Shift+f10 or the applications key and
press the letter x. This will open the codex conversion screen.

I arrow down once to the convert to submenu and right arrow.
I get the following options:
* Kindle
* Microsoft Word 2007
* ePub
* Compressed HTML
* Mobipocket
* PDF
* Rich text format
* Plain text

I hav no idea what to do with Compressed html files that end up with an
extension of htmlz. However, I use the ePub option and books read great in
Voice Dream Reader and retain all the headings, chapters, etc. Once you pick
a format to convert your Kindle book to, press enter and wait for it to tell
you it is done.

Then I tab to open folder, which takes you to the default folder Codex
created when it was installed where you can then copy your converted file
wherever you wish.

That is what I can tell you. Here is the download link for the Codex
program.

Re: accessing a Kindle eBook that refuses to play nicely with VoiceOver

2022-05-03 Thread Woody Anna Dresner

Thanks a lot,
Anna

Hi everyone,

I purchased a Kindle eBook on my phone and was told, "VoiceOver does not
support this content." It's a Jewish prayerbook, and odds are that it's
pictures of the pages, rather than the actual text. I know there used to be
software that could convert Kindle eBooks into accessible formats. If I end
up with an image-based file, such as an images-only PDF, I can run it
through Voice Dream Reader to recognize the text, so I'm fine if the
software creates an image file. Does anyone know of software that can do
this? I have access to computers running MacOS and Windows, so either is
fine.

Thanks so much for any help! I'd like to have this for my nephew's bar
mitzvah in a couple of weeks.

Best,

Hi Anna,
Here is a snippet from my web site's Useful Apps page:
I just did this with a book today in fact.
Codex by James Scholes
Here is a little section from his web site. I encourage any avid readers to
follow the link below and read about it and install the utility.
A few years ago, I wrote a tutorial which guided people through the
installation and configuration of software for the purposes of gaining
access to books purchased from the Amazon Kindle Store. The guide proved
popular, but it required heavy use of the command line, making it unsuitable
and daunting for quite a lot of people, not to mention that it was an
absolute nightmare to troubleshoot if anything went wrong. Which it
frequently did.
Please note, that you can only convert books you have purchased and only for
your use--you cannot share them with others without violating the copyright
laws and cheating the author out of their tiny royalties.
In order to convert your Kindle books with Codex, you will need to install
Kindle For PC version 1.17, which you can get here:
KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44183:
http://turner42.com/KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44183.exe

Codex project web site:
http://jscholes.net/how-to-remove-drm-from-kindle-books-with-codex-2/

I use the convert to ePub and then put it in Voice Dream Reader and you get
all the headings, etc.

I very much doubt it will work with images. IN fact, I'm pretty sure it
won't, so I hope the book also has real text and the pictures are just
getting in the way.

Richard

Hi Richard,

I hope Codex by James Scholes is still available. When I executed the link to

DNS error. I also got this error when I tried executing a previously made

Most all the book apps, Nook, Kindle, Apple Books, will all read ePub books.

Voice dream Reader is by far the most accessible way to do this.

Amazon has been good about letting you return a book which won't work with
VoiceOver and refunding your money. On the rare occasion where I've run
into that, getting my money back has been pretty painless.

2022-05-03 Thread thom3of5
If it is an epub file, the Nook app will read it.

Subject: accessing a Kindle eBook that refuses to play nicely with VoiceOver

Best,
Anna

RE: accessing a Kindle eBook that refuses to play nicely with VoiceOver

2022-05-03 Thread Richard Turner
Hi Anna,
Here is a snippet from my web site's Useful Apps page:
I just did this with a book today in fact.
Codex by James Scholes
Here is a little section from his web site. I encourage any avid readers to
follow the link below and read about it and install the utility.
A few years ago, I wrote a tutorial which guided people through the
installation and configuration of software for the purposes of gaining access
to books purchased from the Amazon Kindle Store. The guide proved popular, but
it required heavy use of the command line, making it unsuitable and daunting
for quite a lot of people, not to mention that it was an absolute nightmare to
troubleshoot if anything went wrong.
KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44183:
http://turner42.com/KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44183.exe

Codex project web site:
http://jscholes.net/how-to-remove-drm-from-kindle-books-with-codex-2/

I use the convert to ePub and then put it in Voice Dream Reader and you get all
the headings, etc.

I very much doubt it will work with images. IN fact, I'm pretty sure it won't,
so I hope the book also has real text and the pictures are just getting in the
way.

HTH,
Richard

Selecting Item from Extensive List

2022-05-03 Thread Bill Gallik
Can anyone tell me if there is a less tedious way to select from a long list of
items as opposed to going through the list one item at a time?

For instance, I live in Wisconsin so when I’m required to fill in my home
address and the state is in a selection list, I find it tiresome to need to go
one state (and in some cases, province) at a time. Also, many of my friends,
people whom I wish to add to my contacts, logging their birthday as appropriate
likewise gets quite tiresome - we’re talking in excess of 70 items in many
cases here.

There must be a better way! HELP!!! 
