Re: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code

2022-09-06 Thread Margaret Thomas

Thank you.

It's normal state is powered off and I might use it 3 times a day, but
don't always use it every day.

When it was new and before I set locked to never, I could unlock it by
pressing the home button. Is locked supposed to be so the screen can't
inadvertently be changed rather than for keeping unauthorized people
out, or is it a sort of sleep thing where the battery isn't being used
at 100% capacity? If it is on and the battery is only slowly draining
and I can press the home button and not have to do the Pass Code, it
might be a solution. I think locked has something to do with
inactivity, but it is only for occasional use and is not my primary phone.

Any help is much appreciated.

Margaret

I don't know if you turn your phone often, but really you shouldn't. iPhones

From time to time you may end up having to turn it off and back on if you have
strange issues or of course there could be a time when you simply run out of
battery and the phone turns itself off, but I literally go weeks and sometimes
months without turning my phone off and back on and the only time I have to put
in my passcode is when for some reason Face Id isn't working a few times one
attempt after another (same goes for Touch Id) or for some other strange
reason. But typically I again often go days without having to enter my passcode

It's been asking for the Pass Code for months now.

When I power up, it says Pass Code is required when phone starts up.  My memory
is that it started asking for it after I had set use Touch ID on the App Store
instead of Apple ID.  I turn on the phone much more than I get apps and had
tried to change it to must use Apple ID on App Store in hopes of not being
asked for the Pass Code to turn on the phone, but I still had to use the pass
code.  I THINK I could use Touch ID the other day when I installed a free app
from the App Store and did not have to type my Apple ID but it wasn't a good
day and my memory may not be correct.

I don't want to get rid of the Pass Code entirely; having it helped with some
mishap I had.  I just would prefer not to have to type it in every time I use
the phone.

Good Evening:

The recent Face ID hit or miss thread caught my interest since, like the

The SE2020 is my first smart phone and is my back up with my land line being
my primary phone. I have the cell powered off most of the time and might power
it on for texting or to check the weather app etc. I have Apple ID, Touch ID,

things are set up, I have to type in my pass code when I power up. I can
usually do it correctly the first or second time so typing it isn't the
problem; I'd prefer to use Touch Id instead if possible. I am not in a work or
school situation and my house does not resemble Grand Central Station and I do
not have a lot of personal information on the cell.

The original post did say locked and not powered off. When I first got the cell and was
trying to follow along with a tutorial, the phone kept saying locked what sounded every
30 seconds and locked became a "dirty"
word and I never investigated what it was good for. I turned lock to never.
I'm using the phone a little more now and would be willing to change that if
someone could explain why it would be good when I use the phone so little. I'd
greatly appreciate knowing if I can keep the pass code for when I needed it for
other things and could use Touch ID when powering on.
Thanks,

RE: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code

2022-09-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Margaret,

As I already said in my previous email, you have to have a passcode as backup
for Touch Id and you cannot unlock your phone after it was turned off with
Touch Id, only the passcode will work here.
Another place where only the passcode works is if you want to go back into
Settings > Touch Id and Passcode so even if you decide you want to turn off
Touch Id/passcode, you do have to enter it in order to get into that area of
settings.

Only you can know if you want to leave your phone open/unprotected. I assume if
you kept it mostly at home, you don't have sensitive information on it and you
don't plan to use Apple Pay then you could disable passcode/Touch Id.

As for the automatic locking of the phone that again is your preference. There
are others on this list who prefer to lock their phone manually by pressing the
side button, I personally am not one of those and want my phone to lock
relatively quickly after I use it because the more it is unlocked the more
battery is used up. But then of course I have about 80 apps on my phone and use
it constantly for anything from checking the time and the weather to checking
email, sending and receiving text messages to doing online banking and using a
variety of home automation devices like smart thermostats for my home and
business, I have video cameras and a monitored alarm system at my business and
have apps for that and I have video doorbell and cameras at home. Even if I
don't actively use my phone I probably am listening to an Audible book while I
am walking to or from work, at night before I go to sleep and so on. I never
counted how often I use my phone each day, but I guess it must be at least 1 to
3 or 4 times an hour so over the course of a day I'd aay probably anywhere from
40 to 60 times when I grab my phone and unlock it to do something.

RE: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code

2022-09-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can and you better know what your phone's passcode is because if you set
up Touch Id you were only able to do so after also setting up an at least
4-digit passcode. By default the iPhone now asks for a 6-digit passcode and you
rather deliberately have to select the 4-digit option. If you ever power off
your phone you need your passcode after it restarts, so far Apple has not
budged from that requirement whether you use Touch Id or Face Id. Also, if you
go to Settings > Face Id and Passcode or Touch Id and Passcode and want to make
any changes, you have to enter your passcode to get into that area, you cannot
open that setting with Touch Id or Face Id.

RE: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code

2022-09-06 Thread Dennis Long
If the phone is powered off you need to use that passcode the first time you
unlock it. If not than you should be able to use touch ID.

Subject: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code

Good Evening:

The recent Face ID hit or miss thread caught my interest since, like the
original poster, I have an iPhone SE 2020 and like Touch ID.

The SE2020 is my first smart phone and is my back up with my land line being
my primary phone. I have the cell powered off most of the time and might power
it on for texting or to check the weather app etc. I have Apple ID, Touch ID,
and Pass Code set up and have purchased an app on the App Store. The way
things are set up, I have to type in my pass code when I power up. I can
usually do it correctly the first or second time so typing it isn't the
problem; I'd prefer to use Touch Id instead if possible. I am not in a work or
school situation and my house does not resemble Grand Central Station and I do
not have a lot of personal information on the cell.

The original post did say locked and not powered off. When I first got the
cell and was trying to follow along with a tutorial, the phone kept saying
locked what sounded every 30 seconds and locked became a "dirty"
word and I never investigated what it was good for. I turned lock to never.
I'm using the phone a little more now and would be willing to change that if
someone could explain why it would be good when I use the phone so little. I'd
greatly appreciate knowing if I can keep the pass code for when I needed it for
other things and could use Touch ID when powering on.
  Thanks,

Margaret

Hi all,
Subject pretty much says it all. I just bought an iPhone 13 mini and have set
up Face ID with no difficulty; however, it seems that it'll work two or three
times and then will require me to use my pass code to unlock my phone. I am
getting very tempted to put my SIM card back in my SE 20 lol. It's much easier
to just reach over and unlock it with my finger than to pick up my mini and
hope I can get it to unlock without having to type in my pass code. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading.

Re: How do I watch tomorrow's Apple Event on my iPhone Apple TV app?

2022-09-06 Thread Richard Turner
They usually start several minutes early with an audio described montage. But
yes, it should be readily available in the app.
If not, go to the Apple web site and click on the watch link.
It will either stream it on safari, or through the app.

Hi Debbie,

At 10 o’clock or so AM Pacific time, just open the TV app, and it should be at
the top of what to watch. It should be pretty easy to find. I just swipe right
from the top left corner of the screen.

Hope this helps,

Re: How do I watch tomorrow's Apple Event on my iPhone Apple TV app?

2022-09-06 Thread Jennie Facer
Hi Debbie,

At 10 o’clock or so AM Pacific time, just open the TV app, and it should be at
the top of what to watch. It should be pretty easy to find. I just swipe right
from the top left corner of the screen.

Hope this helps,

Jenn

How do I watch tomorrow's Apple Event on my iPhone Apple TV app?

2022-09-06 Thread Debbie Downey
HI,

The subject says it all.

Where do I go on the TV app on my iPhone to watch the Apple event tomorrow?
I've never been able to find it on the app before until after the fact when
it was available for download. I'd like to watch it live on my phone.

Thanks!

Debbie

RE: Face ID hit or miss

2022-09-06 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I wonder about this. I doubt Android manufacturers would keep using touch ID if
at least someone outside of the blindness community wanted it. I could see
where blind people would prefer touch ID over face ID more than sighted users
would, since a sighted person isn't going to use their iPhone without looking
at it.

I've seen reviews of Android phones where people love the touch ID on the back
of the phone and others where they hate it. It depends a lot on where the touch
ID sensor is located, which varies from manufacturer to manufacturer in Android
land. With the desire to turn all smart phones into a slab of glass, I suspect
touch ID, as long as it sticks around, will move to under the glass sensors.

Hello James,

Of course you can send Apple your feedback regarding Touch Id, but apart from a
few people mostly in the blind community I know very few people who prefer
Touch Id over Face Id and unless it is already part of their plan for the next
couple of releases, Apple will not continue to offer Touch Id just because a
small minority of a minority prefers it. You can be sure that the iPhone 15 is
probably mostly a done deal already inside Apple and that they are probably
working on phones at least 2 generations ahead so unless they design an
under-screen Touch Id option which meets their requirements and which is cheap
enough to include without making the phones even more expensive I don't see it
coming back. Of course a new SE phone even if it is the rumoured 6.1 inches
instead of a smaller 4.7 inches could still feature the virtual home button
with Touch Id.
I doubt Apple would put Touch Id on a side button and I doubt even more they
would put it on the back of the phone. In most articles where people review
phones with Touch Id on the back I read that it is not intuitive and convenient
to use.

Dennis,

Thanks for the link for submitting feedback to Apple.

I'll be explaining to Apple how important touch I D is for me. And, I don't
care where it is located on the phone. I do not even necessarily need a home
button but, touch I D is extremely important for me. Glad I don't live in a
location where I have to wear gloves to protect my hands from frost bite.

That is simply speculation at this point, it is probably more likely they would
come up with under-screen Touch Id which means that you put your finger on a
certain area of the screen and that the scanner is embedded under the screen
and it will read your finger print that way.

I read somewhere that on a future iPhone, they were going to put a fingerprint
option in the Power Button. I probably would like that, although that is not a
deal breaker in my case.

Attention has always been off, as I was instructed by others on this list to do
back when I first got my phone about eight months ago or so. Believe me, I have
tried everything. I don’t mind face ID, but I had better success with the

Re: [tech-vi Announce List] Apple settles lawsuit with developer over App Store scam apps

2022-09-06 Thread Cara Quinn
Agreed, this isn’t the first time this sort of thing has happened.

You may remember back several years ago, a photography app used the volume up
button to take photos. At the time, this was unique. Apple pulled it from the
App Store and then rejected it from then on, saying in essence that it broke
their Human Interface Guidelines, from what I remember. Then they implemented
the exact same feature themselves, going forward. Now, to this day the volume
up button can be used to take photos. Go figure.

So I guess the HIG wasn’t such a big issue after all! The developers of the app
were none too happy but I believe they were compensated. I should go and have a
lookie on the interwebs to see how all the details played out. :)

Cheers!

Cara

I know in the US you can get directory assistance as Dennis said.
In fact, I think some cell providers include it; but one would need to check

RE: Face ID hit or miss

2022-09-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

One of my google phones has it on the power button as mentioned in my last
email, and the other has it on the screen. I'm not sure what's taking apple so
long to add this feature.

I don’t mind face ID, but I had better success with the
fingerprint, that’s for sure.

Re: Accessible phone book

2022-09-06 Thread Richard Turner
If you are talking about individuals, and not businesses, I'm sorry, that was
not a good answer on my part. I just did some testing and it is focused on
business phone numbers. But if it is a business, just ask for the name and
city, like Siri, what's the phone number for taco belle in Chico california.
But for a person, I've done internet searches and sometimes their number is
listed.
I usually only am looking for business numbers.
The WhitePages app used to be free, but I have not tried it in years.

The sheet grabber is not something you can get rid of. It is a new

Not a helpful change from Apple in my opinion.

What is the most accessible and economical way to look up phone numbers?
Also, what is this new thing I am seeing – top sheet, bottom sheet, sheet
grabber? How do I get rid of it?

Re: Accessible phone book

2022-09-06 Thread chaim biberfeld
I don't understand, you ask Siri for a name and a city where does it look it
up? Are you talking about in contacts? I was thinking something like a white
pages telephone book which i find inaccessible And expensive.

RE: Face ID hit or miss

2022-09-06 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'd guard against buying into the marketing from either side of the aisle.
Sure, Google would like you to think Android is the more innovative platform,
but there are examples where Apple has scooped them and examples where a new
Android feature didn't work out in the market place. Apple would like you to
think that they always get things right and don't introduce a feature until
they've improved it somehow, but not all of Apple's feature pan out, like 3D
touch peek and pop, and sometimes they're just flat late to the game, such as
with wireless charging.

Apple typically won't do anything unless it works really good. On the one hand
you ask what is taking Apple so long, but let's remember who first introduced
Touch Id on smart phones and who first introduced Face Id. In both cases it was
Apple with Samsung, Google and others following. I just read an article where a
guy on 9 to 5 Google wrote that he bought the latest Google Pixel phone which
has under-display Touch Id. He handed it to a friend to check it out and his
friend put his finger on the screen and the phone unlocked. At first he thought
it was some fluke, but after locking the phone again his friend repeated it and
he was consistently able to unlock his phone. Not so great and I'd rather Apple
doesn't put something like that on an iPhone if it's potentially not safe.

One of my google phones has it on the power button as mentioned in my last
email, and the other has it on the screen. I'm not sure what's taking apple so
long to add this feature.

I don’t mind face ID, but I had better success with the
fingerprint, that’s for sure.
