Follow up dictation upcoming IOS 16.1

2022-10-22 Thread Gordon
So I promised an email over the weekend giving my final opinion on IOS
16.1 that you will all have the opportunity to install on Monday.
Dictation is working a lot better, however you must use the two finger
double tap to start and stop. I've always found the dictate button and
double tapped with one finger to start and stop, but that method doesn't
work very well in the new version. But the accuracy seems to be much
better and I would say it would be fine to get the update. They did not
push out a second release candidate, so I'm assuming they fixed a lot of
this under the hood without having to update the software. Battery life
is incredibly good on my phone. I've only use 48 percent in 24 hours and
I did use my phone a lot yesterday on Saturday. Dictation seemed to work
itself out sometime on Friday on my device and I've used it a good bit
prior to sending this message. But it was really busted when I first
reached out to Mark to clear with him discussing this issue. I
understand why it's not a good idea to discuss beta software because
things are constantly changing, but release candidates are the finished
product that the public will get. I'm just glad that this got sorted out
before it went public because I know that a lot of people rely on
dictation working properly for their every day use.

Being asked for password each time I get a free app

2022-10-22 Thread Wayne Merritt
Hello. I am being asked for a password each time I want to download a free app
from the App Store. I thought there was a way in the iPhone SettingS to turn
off this behavior, but darned if I can find it. I am also being asked to
confirm with Face ID, which I am fine in doing. It is the constant password
verification requests when getting free apps that are getting on my nerves. All
thoughts welcome. I'm using iOS 16.0.3 on an iPhone 13 Pro.

Warm regards,

Re: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States?

2022-10-22 Thread Cris Ali
Hi Sieghard,
I remember the days when one needed to go to a phone store to have them cut the
full size sim card to the Nano sim size. My first experience was in 2012 in
Jordan. When the store tech told me he is going to cut the sim card, I got very
nervous.somehow I thought that he may screw up things.
But truthfully, my experience with using an e-sim for the last three years is
very positive. When I setup my 14 pro last night I was nervous that the
transfer of the e-sim from my old phone to the new one may fail, and thus I
will have no phone service to call the help and support number. Then I was
happily surprised by the ease the e-sim transfer went.

2022-10-22 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't like disagreeing with Sieghard, and I'm not really disagreeing, but I'd
have no problem recommending a two year old phone or even older. If the person
realizes that they'll be getting that many fewer updates then it's just a
decision on whether the money they're saving is worth the shortened life span
or not.

I think it's totally OK to buy last year's phone and given the less than mind
blowing changes between the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 I can understand why people
who do need or want to upgrade look at the iPhone 14 Pro. As far as that goes I
think somebody is much better off buying an iPhone 13 Pro instead of a regular
iPhone 14 or 14 Plus because as has been mentioned many times, the processor in
the regular iPhone 14 is the same A15 processor which is in all the iPhone 13
models and if you buy a 13 Pro you at least get LiDAR which allows you to use
door detection and whatever other things developers may dream up which can use
this sensor.

Hi all, on this same subject, I noticed that no one has mentioned the iPhone

iPhone 12. If someone is in the market for an iPhone should they not get an
iPhone 12 or would it matter.

 1. The SE third Gen is probably a fine phone, but it still has a

that reason, but personally while having both Touch Id and Face Id

iPhone SE may look a lot like an XR with a big notch, but it
appears that the home button may go away and since I doubt Apple
will put a Touch Id capable side button on any phone I guess this
means it will of course have Face Id. I would get used to using a
phone without home button from the start even though having an iPad
you of course would be used to a home button, but if this rumour about the
fourth generation SE is true then it means we will never again see

RE: I'm in the Market for a Small iPhone

2022-10-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
And for most people 256 Gb is more than enough, I have an iPhone 11 with 64 Gb
and use a bit more than half and currently 10 Gb are Audible books I have
downloaded but not yet listened tto.
There are only two scenarios I can think of why you would need 512 Gb or 1 Tb
and that is if you like to record tons of videos or if you are a digital
hoarder like Joshua who wants to have every book downloaded to his device
whether he reads them or not. I have a little over 1000 books in my Audible
library and I assume that even a 1 Tb phone wouldn't be enough if I wanted to
actually keep a downloaded copy on my phone, but I really don't care because if
I do want to listen to a book again I just find it in my library and for the
most part with the fiber connections many of us have nowadays it take a minute
or less to download it.

Hi all, on this same subject, I noticed that no one has mentioned the iPhone
12. And I have also seen on this list that people have had problems with their
iPhone 12. If someone is in the market for an iPhone should they not get an
iPhone 12 or would it matter.

I would recommend the iPhone 13 Mini, but before you decide I'd

of course also consider the latest 14 Pro, but that would for you
to decide. Here are a few reasons why I suggest 13 Mini or 13 Pro/14 Pro:

 1. The SE third Gen is probably a fine phone, but it still has a
Touch Id virtual home button. I know many people buy it for exactly
that reason, but personally while having both Touch Id and Face Id
would be best, if I had to decide between Touch Id and Face Id I
would choose Face Id. There is also the fact that the Se third Gen
may very well be the last phone with a home button and Touch Id
unless (as I said earlier) they introduce under display Touch I dat
some point in addition to Face Id. I am saying this because I just
read an article where John Prosser, who has a pretty good track
record with his predictions, is revealing first information about
the iPhone SE 4th Gen which is expected to be released next spring
as the new lowe cost iPhone. According to that article that new
iPhone SE may look a lot like an XR with a big notch, but it
appears that the home button may go away and since I doubt Apple
will put a Touch Id capable side button on any phone I guess this
means it will of course have Face Id. I would get used to using a
phone without home button from the start even though having an iPad
you of course would be used to a home button, but if this rumour about the
fourth generation SE is true then it means we will never again see an
 iPhone with a home button.

 2. I mention the 13 Pro or 14 Pro because you should really check
them out and hold them in your hand and compare then to an iPhone
13 Mini. They really are not all that much larger physically, but
you get the benefit of the LiDAR sensor which is required for
features like door detection and maybe other things in the future.

Lastly, I wouldn't buy an SE because I think having the ability to
use MagSafe accessories such as charging pads, cases and external
batteries is very nice and to my

Hi Chris,

I remember when the iPhone 5S first came out which had the Nano SIM that I went
to the Philippines and had a really hard time finding a Nano SIM since most of
the carriers and devices still used full-size SIM's or Micro SIM's. I ended up
finding a place where they told me that a Micro SIM can actually be cut to fit
a Nano SIM tray and that is what they did, but when technologies change there
is always a period of a couple of years when things might not be quite as one
would like, certainly keeping your old phone for travel will solve your issue.
I think, however, that many carriers in many countries will offer e-SIM options
because honestly it is such a superior system that I wonder why nobody came up
with it years ago.

Hi folks,
I followed this thread with interest, because I travel overseas frequently
enough to be concerned about the lack of physical sim tray in iPhone 14 series
sold in the US. Each time I travel to another country I buy a local sim
specific to the country I am visiting. Usually it takes less than two minutes
to replace my american with the local sim and start using a local number.
Nevertheless, I ordered iPhone 14 Pro and just received it this evening. For
the last three years I have been using an ESIM on my XR in order to keep my
physical sim tray free for the time of travel overseas.
Setting up my new phone was very easy and surprisingly, the automatic transfer
of my e-sim from my XR to my 14 Pro went very smoothly. For the time being, I
will keep my XR saved for travel overseas, just in case I found it difficult to
get e-sims in other countries, and I recommend to any of you who travel
frequently overseas to keep your old phones for this purpose if you upgrade to
series 14.

2022-10-22 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I too agree with Alan, Chris and Rich. For me, I use Microsoft 365, as Rich
points out. I get 1TB of storage in One Drive, and I just have the Documents
folder in Windows synced with One Drive. This means that I can always go to One
Drive to see what ever is also in the Documents folder on my PC. I use this for
consuming content, like reading Word documents or listening to MP3 files, and
I’ll also update text files with something like VoiceDream Writer. Even though
I prefer creating content on my PC with it’s desktop operating system and
applications and using a full desktop keyboard, I wouldn’t say I’d never see
myself doing this on a mobile device.

I also agree with Chris. I understand the desire to be able to manage all
content using your iDevice but I'm not convinced it will ever be totally
practical for those of us dependent on VoiceOver and accessibility.

Personally, when I got my first iPhone in 2013, Dropbox was the cloud service I
found most supported by the apps I used and it also gave me the best bridge
between files on my computer and iPhone. I decided long ago that the price of
the Dropbox Plus account was well worth it and I haven't looked back.

I'll close by confessing that I will always prefer doing any serious editing on
my computer with a full sized keyboard so I'll never be using my iPhone for
Word or Excel editing.

Hi Kay,

Well, getting files to your iPhone is not a difficult one. You could simply
use one of the cloud storage programs / apps, like Dropbox, One Drive, or
Google Drive. I personally use Dropbox, and this allows me to access any of my
files on both my computer or iPhone.

Now as far as editing files on your iPhone, this first depends on what type of
files you will be editing. If they are MS Office files like Word or Excel, I
will tell you that this can not be done as easily as it is done on your
computer. Word was not the most accessible on the iPhone, but I have not used
it for a while, so do not know if it has gotten any better. And Excel, because
of the screen size, is very slow and tedious to use. On my phone, I mainly use
txt or RTF file formats when writing. And using Mark Down can be handy when
needed.

If you are going to be doing a lot of editing and writing, I would probably
recommend some type of keyboard. there are many out there, so it is really
depending on what you prefer to use. You can use a regular blue tooth
keyboard, or you could use something like the Orbit Writer or Hable keyboard.
Again, this comes down to preference.

As far as what apps to use, well, again, this will depend on what type of files
you will be working with. As far as editors there are lots out there, and
everybody has there favorite. there's Voice Dream Writer, Drafts, 1Writer, and
of coarse Notes.

I hope this has been helpful and at least gives you a starting point.

RE: How to use files on an iPhone

2022-10-22 Thread Richard Turner
I agree with everything Chris said. Word nor Excel are truly usable for
editing on the iPhone for a VoiceOver user.

Text files are great with things like Voice Dream Writer, and other text
editing apps.

The beauty of Voice Dream Writer is that while you can only edit in txt format,
you can export to several file types if sharing a document with someone else.

The other thing you could do with those files is to buy the adapter for the
iphone with the USB port that I think is called the lightning camera 3 or
something like that. You could then put the files on a thumb drive. The
adapter has a port for the lightning power adapter and a USB A thumb drive. It
has to have power to use with the iPhone, but you could then access the files
on the thumb drive and if needed, copy them to your phone.

If you don’t have Microsoft 365, you might consider it, you get 1 TB of
OneDrive storage with your account.

For the individual account its around $70 per year, so less than $6 per month.

Hi Chris,

Yes, this is definitely something to think about. The only problem I have with
drop box is the limit of storage and what you have to pay for the pittance they
give you. Other cloud options might be the way to go though. Thanks for
bringing up the issues with word and excel. It just seems that I could be
using that phone to more capacity. Thanks much for your response.

Hi all, on this same subject, I noticed that no one has mentioned the iPhone
12. And I have also seen on this list that people have had problems with their
iPhone 12. If someone is in the market for an iPhone should they not get an
iPhone 12 or would it matter.

are a few reasons why I suggest 13 Mini or 13 Pro/14 Pro:

 1. The SE third Gen is probably a fine phone, but it still has a Touch Id
virtual home button. I know many people buy it for exactly that reason,
but personally while having both Touch Id and Face Id would be best, if I
had to decide between Touch Id and Face Id I would choose Face Id. There
is also the fact that the Se third Gen may very well be the last phone
with a home button and Touch Id unless (as I said earlier) they introduce
under display Touch I dat some point in addition to Face Id. I am saying
this because I just read an article where John Prosser, who has a pretty
good track record with his predictions, is revealing first information
about the iPhone SE 4th Gen which is expected to be released next spring
as the new lowe cost iPhone. According to that article that new iPhone SE
may look a lot like an XR with a big notch, but it appears that the home
button may go away and since I doubt Apple will put a Touch Id capable
side button on any phone I guess this means it will of course have Face
Id. I would get used to using a phone without home button from the start
even though having an iPad you of course would be used to a home button,
but if this rumour about the fourth generation SE is true then it means we
will never again see an iPhone with a home button.

 2. I mention the 13 Pro or 14 Pro because you should really check them out
and hold them in your hand and compare then to an iPhone 13 Mini. They
really are not all that much larger physically, but you get the benefit of
the LiDAR sensor which is required for features like door detection and
maybe other things in the future.

Lastly, I wouldn't buy an SE because I think having the ability to use
MagSafe accessories such as charging pads, cases and external batteries is
very nice and to my knowledge not even the third Gen iPhone SE has
MagSafe. I assume the 13 Mini has it, but definitely the 13 Pro and 14 Pro
 have it.

How to use files on an iPhone

2022-10-22 Thread Kay Malmquist
Here is my great conundrum. I do so much with my iPhone and I am sure there
is an answer to this. I have a bunch of files on my computer, but I want to
know if there is a good way to either put them on my iPhone and have total
access to them using whatever app. Or can I load them on to a hard drive
and access them from my iPhone somehow? I want to be able to edit them and
everything I can do with my computer. My ultimate goal would be to move
away from using the computer as much as possible and just using the iPhone.
If anyone can tell me if this is possible and how I might go about doing
this, I'd really appreciate the input. Thanks much.
