RE: Is this a potential security problem?

2022-11-18 Thread James Bentley
Why, would I as a blind guy want to try to whip out a can of pepper spray to
spray some jerk who might already have his 40 caliber aimed right between my
blind eyes.

Pepper spray is hit and miss even with the sighted. And, no sane sighted
person would try to use a stupid can of pepper spray if the would be theif has
a pointed hand gun aimed right at his/her face.

Just give the stinking jerk/jerkette your phone and keep your life. Better
yet, keep your phone in your pocket. Unless you really need it.

Hi Kelly,

Keep in mind that if a guy is in your face so to speak and you sprayed him in
that close proximity with your fancy pepper spray you'd most likely be on the
ground right along side him.

Subject: Re: Is this a potential security problem?

I have been a victim advocate in Chicago for more than 25 years.
Criminals seem to target blind people less often for robberies because a blind
person does not know that a gun is pointed at them or that a criminal is
displaying an unsheathed knife. This needs to be explained and described to the
blind person before they comply with the criminal. They want to act quickly and
disappear and the extra communications needed for compliance requires extra
time and hassle.

More likely, the blind person will experience theft when a phone is left on a
table at a public place like a restaurant and a criminal picks it up and runs
away with the phone. Phones left in coats or unattended backpacks are also in
jeopardy of theft. Another theft possibility is when a blind person is casually
using the phone on a train or a bus and the criminal yanks it out of the user’s
hand and runs away when the door is open. As mentioned, a common way to avoid
phone robberies is to avoid using the iPhone in public. When it needs to be
used, such as with a navigation app, the phone should be in a pocket or held
closely near the body with a hand firmly grasping it.
Sighted criminals target those who are flashy with their Apple tech.
I also have a strategy to prevent criminals from getting in my face and causing
problems to my safety. I carry around a two or three ounce can of Heatwave
brand pepper spray, Napalm strength. This is way more intense then the pepper
spray sold in most retail stores and even more intense and painful than the
pepper spray police use. Fox is another good brand. These pepper sprays drop
bad guys in seconds because they strip the protective oily layer on the surface
of the skin so pain is felt immediately. I get the fog version as a blind
person because it is difficult to aim a stream accurately. A three second blast
of Heatwave Napalm strength to a criminal putting a phone up to my face will
cause him to drop the iPhone and writhe in an inescapable cloud of intense and
sustained pain. Small belt pouches are sold for pepper spray cans so the
container is easily available within arm’s reach.

Actually, yes.
I don't recall right now if it is a default keystroke, or if you have to define
it under commands in VoiceOver settings.

If you dig through the commands in the VO settings, you should find Siri and if
no keyboard command is defined, you can pick a command and add it assuming that
key combination is not already being used.

RE: Can You Replicate These Bugs in iOS 16?

2022-11-18 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Joe,

I and others are definitely replicating your first item regarding the native
Mail app's incorrect Voiceover preview of a message with focus. I'm not really
doing the other items you mentioned so cannot comment on them.

I've been meaning to report the Mail preview bug to Apple Accessibility so
thanks for the reminder.

Hi, are you seeing these bugs on your end?

1. As you’re swiping through emails on the native Mail app, Voiceover will read
the correct sender and subject line, but the message preview is completely
different from the actual email. The problem is inconsistent but presents
itself across multiple messages in the chosen inbox. The problem exists across
all email accounts being used. In fact, the inaccurate message summaries
sometimes pull from completely different email accounts.

2. If you tap Add contact when sending an email or text message, Voiceover
refuses to navigate by heading. True, you can use the search function as
opposed to navigating the length of your contacts, but navigating by headers is
useful when forgetting the exact spelling of an uncommon contact's name.
Voiceover simply continues to say "no headings."

3. Voiceover is jumping to the bottom of the screen when attempting to navigate
longer emails. You have to swipe down with three fingers to scroll further down
in the message and then back track to try to read the portions of the email
voiceover skipped.

I keep hoping the issues will be fixed with subsequent iOS 16 updates, but
alas, no luck so far. Before reporting to Apple, is anyone else experiencing
these glitches?

Thank you in advance for any feedback.

Best,

Joe

Be my eyes question

2022-11-18 Thread Paula Jordan
Hi all. Is anyone having problems with the be my eyes app. I place a call,
the tones stop and the phone seems to freeze up. My Iphone 13 Mini is having
some rather disturbing problems, so I'm not sure if it's my phone or if
there is some sort of glitch with the server or the app. Just curious.

Thanks.

God bless!

That was going to be my next suggestion. People may not want to do
that if their Alexa device is their iPhone and they are constantly
crossing time zones, I am at the edge of a time zone in the United
States and simply crossing state lines means I am in another time
zone.

Is the address associated with your Amazon account in a different time zone

RE: Twitter closes offices until Monday as more employees quit

2022-11-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Not sure what you mean, Twitter accessibility for screenreader users will
probably not change and if you mean whether Twitter will be down until Monday
then the answer is No and please read the article. It simply means that
apparently Twitter offices will be closed and the only issue which may arise is
that if there is a technical issue or outage of some sort that it may have more
of an impact because there may not be engineers around to fix it.
Elon Musk may be a very difficult human being, but he is apparently a genius
and certainly he is no dummy so who knows how this will all play out and what
will happen to Twitter say in a year. Maybe Twitter will be stronger and better
than ever, one has to keep in mind that anything you read on the news is
subjective to a degree and when they report that a large amount of Twitter
employees is quitting any numbers are only conjecture and based on hear-say and
of course as some leave others may see an opportunity and join and maybe they
are people who will live up to Musk's high standards of work ethics.

Hundreds of Twitter employees are estimated to have decided to quit the
beleaguered social media company following a Thursday deadline from new owner
Elon Musk that staffers sign up for "long hours at high intensity," or leave.
The departures highlight the reluctance of some of Twitter's 3,000 or so
employees to remain at a company where Musk earlier fired half of the workforce
including top management, and is ruthlessly changing the culture to emphasize
long hours and an intense pace. Musk took to Twitter late on Thursday and said

The billionaire owner also added: "We just hit another all time high in Twitter

Musk met some top employees on Thursday to try to convince them to stay, said
one current employee and a recently departed employee who is in touch with
Twitter colleagues. The company also notified employees that it will close its
offices and cut badge access until Monday, according to two sources. Security
officers began kicking some employees out of one office on Thursday evening,
one source said.
Over 110 Twitter employees across at least four continents had announced their
decision to leave in public Twitter posts reviewed by Reuters, though each
resignation could not be independently verified. About 15 employees, many in ad
sales, posted their intention to stay at the company.

Of course, if someone is focused on that market and not the run-of-the-mill
drug addict, then yes. But, for me, I am not worried in the least.

I don’t hang my phone out for people to grab.

Since I grew up traveling without all the digital assistance, I don’t’ really
use my phone for traveling other than to plan a route ahead of time, or when
being navigator in a car for the person driving.

As for screen curtain or Voiceover I have said this before and I still maintain

learn about such features. It's not difficult to find this information online.

My initial reaction was that you are being New York paranoid.

It is just as likely that a mugger could wack a blind person on the head, and
put their finger on the device to unlock it if it has the home button.

I've never heard of either thing happening anywhere.

And, good luck to the thief who knows nothing about VoiceOver doing anything
with the phone. Which leads me to my personal approach. The screen curtain is
always on unless I need a sighted person's help, or want to show them
something. So, again, good luck to the person who could use face ID to unlock
my phone only to find a blank screen and something jabbering at them.

Also, if you are holding your phone out in front of you, rather than wearing it
in a harness for orientation or directions, you are putting yourself more at
risk.

My Hable One braille keyboard is even easier. I just hold down the
letter J and feel a vibration and I can get to my control center.

RE: Is this a potential security problem?

2022-11-18 Thread Richard Turner
Of course, if someone is focused on that market and not the run-of-the-mill
drug addict, then yes. But, for me, I am not worried in the least.

I don’t hang my phone out for people to grab.

Since I grew up traveling without all the digital assistance, I don’t’ really
use my phone for traveling other than to plan a route ahead of time, or when
being navigator in a car for the person driving.

Hi Richard,

As for screen curtain or Voiceover I have said this before and I still maintain
this opinion that if somebody specializes on steeling iPhones they can easily
learn about such features.

Also, if you are holding your phone out in front of you, rather than wearing it
in a harness for orientation or directions, you are putting yourself more at
risk.

Hey Alex, the VO, or voice over keyboard command is a set of two keys held
down. It seems to vary, depending on the device and the keyboard. Sometimes the
VO keys are the first and the third key, sometimes the first and the fourth
key, and on most, Apple keyboards, the second and third key. When I mentioned
the right VO key, it would be the right hand key that you would use for the
voiceover combination. So if your device uses the first and third key for the
voice over command, then it would be the third key would be your right VO key.

Hi Richard,

Yes, they usually have an expiry date, but they are good for several years. We
sell hundreds of cans of bear spray a year and it's basically the same thing
and many of the bear spray manufacturers like Counter Assault, Bear Guard and
so on also make smaller cans of spray for protections against dogs or other
undesirable animals (after all humans are also animals).

Kelly,
Have you ever had to use the pepper spray?

How do you avoid blow-back from the spray?

How long are the cans good for? Any concerns about them failing to work
because they are too old?

Personal crimes are up everywhere, so this is good information to have if you
tend to walk alone a lot.

Small belt pouches are sold for pepper spray cans so the
container is easily available within arm’s reach.

that close proximity with your fancy pepper spray you'd most likely be on the
ground right along side him.

Best regards,

RE: Is this a potential security problem?

2022-11-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Richard,

As for screen curtain or Voiceover I have said this before and I still maintain
this opinion that if somebody specializes on steeling iPhones they can easily
learn about such features.

Also, if you are holding your phone out in front of you, rather than wearing it
in a harness for orientation or directions, you are putting yourself more at
risk.

RE: Is this a potential security problem?

2022-11-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Theoretically I assume this could be done although the thief then better make
sure the phone never locks because even if he can unlock it this way, you still
can't get into Settings > Face Id and Passcode to disable Face Id or switch it
to a different face since getting into this are requires you to enter the
passcode.
Also, how long has Face Id been around? I think it was since the iPhone X in
2017 so 5 years and have you ever heard on this list or elsewhere that this has
been done? I am pretty sure if thieves made this their specialty one would hear
about it.
Lastly, especially with a blind or visually impaired person, if thieves
targeted them what would prevent them to corner them in a quiet place and grab
their hand to unlock a Touch Id phone or simply to ask them to give them their
passcode? I know there is still a difference between a grab and run and using
more forceful methods including maybe a punch or two, but I am sure plenty of
people would probably volunteer their passcode if they got a slap or punch in
the face with a thread of worse to come or even if the thief put a knife to
their throat threatening to cut them if they didn't give them their passcode.
I think the more important thing is to not put your phone on the restaurant
table next to you while you are having lunch or dinner since I have definitely
heard of phones getting snatched this way and also to simply make sure you keep
track of your phone.

In ios 15 it worked out fine, but in 16 it doesn’t. When I do 3 fingers up
nothing happens, and I only hear a noise. I never hear or feel any vibration.
What can I do?

It is, and this is still working for me since I moved up to IOS 16. Was it
working for you with IOS 15? If so then you shouldn’t be doing anything wrong,
since it should work exactly the same. Put your finger at the very bottom of
the screen and then move it up until you feel the second vibration. Lift your
Finger, and you should be in the App Switcher. When you try this gesture, what
are you getting?
