Maybe your friend can ask the carrier, but it is not shure that they

Simon,
Especially on eBay Caveat emptor applies in a triple measure. In case
you are not familiar with the expression, it is Latin and translated
means “Let the buyer beware”. It is now up to you and try to get the
phone unlocked, worst case scenario will be that you have a phone
locked to a carrier which is of no use to you. If the phone is a CDMA
phone it can be even worse, here is a quote from an article I found
when I did a Google search for “What to know when buying a used
iPhone” regarding iPhones which have been report lost or stolen:
If you’re on a CDMA network like Verizon or Spring make sure the
iPhone you’re buying doesn’t have a bad Electronic Serial Number (ESN).
ESN’s go bad when a device is reported lost or stolen, and a carrier
won’t activate devices with bad ESN’s on their network.
I read a news article on CBC recently about this, basically carriers
have some sort of blacklist and the numbers of stolen or phones which
have been reported lost are put on this list and if you end up buying
one (maybe from the thief) then you can’t activate this phone at all
and apparently carriers at least here in Canada do share this
information.
Anyhow, I hope things work out for you, but if this was officially an
off-contract phone the seller should have unlocked it before selling
it and you as a buyer should not have bought it unless you were
planning to always use it with the same carrier. There are, by the
way, a lot of good articles when you google “What to know when buying
a used iPhone”. Apple even gives people a way to check what is called
the activation lock. Here is a good article which explains this:

Hi Simon, that shouldn't matter whether you're buying it from eBay,
or any other carrier. The carrier that is locked to is responsible
for unlocking the device for you. So you might want to consider
talking to the person that you're buying for and see if they will
unlock it as these are individuals.

you may have to have someone sighted point that out for you the first time but
once you know where it is, it isn't an issue. You just have to press and hold
it until the device beeps letting you know it's been turned on.

I tested the device yesterday with a pan of water, using the chicken preset onb

add that the camera on any iPhone is linear. Hence, it takes lots of practice
finding those barcodes. I don't know which USB barcode scanner you are using,
but it's probably an Omni directional type. Therefore, capturing the barcode is
easier to find then on the phone's camera. I've been using Digit-Eyes since it
came out and I still have problems from time to time capturing the barcodes.
I'm using an iPhone 6 with 8.3. My extensive use of the app is creating my own
barcode labels for my work files and important docs. HTH.

Cheers,
Eileen

it would be neat if KNFBReader would include this ability.
I'm also curious to see what people suggest here.

Hello:

Currently, I use a barcode scanner that connects to my computer via USB and
uses bcscan.com. I would like my iPhone to take over this job. A few years
back, I tried doing this with several different apps and found the
experience to be severely lacking. Perhaps it was the apps, perhaps it was
the camera. I have an iPhone 6+ which has a significantly better camera.
What would be the go to app for this task? I'd like to be able to identify
canned foods and other items in my kitchen, while I'm cooking, instead of
having to run back and forth to the computer and back.

Thanks in advance,
Robby
