To all the kind and wonderful ladies and gentlemen who helped answer my
question – Thank you very much! Really appreciate your help and understanding.
To the others who thought it was a joke or made fun of my question, I wish they
would read the rules of this group which I quote below:

them!
Best wishes & many blessings!

Dave, that Amazon comment was very ignorant and entirely inappropriate.
Kiruna is from India and you may want to remember that not everybody knows
about everything.
I am in Canada and I get lots of people who ask me where I got my guide dog
from, how much they are and if I have to pay for them.
And just in case this is something you didn't know, India is part of the
Commonwealth just as Canada, Australia, Pakistan, Nigeria and other countries
are so maybe it would be possible for somebody from a Commonwealth country
where there is no guide dog school to apply to a guide dog school in another
Commonwealth country and be accepted to get a dog. I am not saying this is so,
but it is certainly possible.
I am in Canada yet I can apply at any US guide dog school to get a dog if I so
choose even though we have several guide dog schools in Canada. My first dog
was from Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester, Michigan and among the I think
24 people who were there in my group to get dogs 4 came from Spain on some
arrangement the Spanish government or maybe it was some sort of Spanish not for
profit group had with Leader Dogs.

Since nobody explained to Kiruna what the usual process is to get a guide dog,
I will do so in general terms.
You apply to a guide dog school, if it is the first time you get a dog from
them they typically would visit you where you live, they would want to see your
home and where you work (if you work) and they would also want to see you walk
around with a cane or your previous guide dog if you currently have one to
assess your mobility skills and so on.
If they accept you, they will at some point let you know when you can get a
dog, some schools have fairly long waiting lists. Once you get the date you
have to go to the school for typically a 3-week training course where you get
to know your dog and your dog gets to know you. Walking with a guide dog
requires training just as walking with a cane does and if you have never had a
dog you have to of course learn how to care for the dog, this includes
grooming, feeding and picking up the dog poop in a little plastic bag; I know,
sounds shitty, but I shit you not.
After your course you get to take your dog home, some schools may also send a
guide dog trainer home with you to do some more training in your own
environment or some schools may ask you to come for a shorter course at the
school and then you do more one-on-one training in your own city/town. In rare
cases a trainer may even come to you and do the entire training with you in
your city/town, but I think most schools would need a good reason to do this.
Most schools also like to follow up with you on an annual bases and they may
send a trainer to do a walk with you and evaluate how things are going.
Keep in mind that when you get a dog that dog is not yours. I assume all
schools are the same in this respect, but should you not care for the dog
properly they do have the right to take it away from you and I have heard of a
few cases where this was done.
As for the cost to train a dog, including breeding programs, puppy raising,
training and after-care it is I believe around $30,000 or $35,000 US so
actually buying a guide dog is not something most people could afford if the
schools weren't not for profit organizations who are financed from donations,
fund raising events, money bequeathed to them and so on. I believe in England
the government is involved as well and in Germany the health insurance pays for
guide dogs as well as for things like dog food, vet costs etc.

Lastly, remember the country where you live. How accepted are dogs there? I
haven't been to India with or without a dog, but I did once take my guide dog
to the Philippines where my wife is from. This was actually my first trip there
in 2009 and when we first met in person. I got all the

Alibaba made a smart iPhone screen to help blind people shop and it costs next to nothing

2018-11-12 Thread Avnish Chopra
Gadgets – TechCrunch - Monday, 12 November 2018 at 8:55 AM

Alibaba made a smart screen to help blind people shop and it costs next to
nothing

Just a few years ago, Li Mengqi could not have imagined shopping on her own.
Someone needed to always keep her company to say aloud what was in front of
her, who’s been blind since birth.

When smartphones with text-to-speech machines for the visually impaired
arrived, she immediately bought an iPhone. “Though it was expensive,” Li, a
23-year-old who grew up in a rural village in eastern China’s Zhejiang
province, told me. Cheaper smartphone options in China often don’t have good
accessibility features.

Screen readers opened a plethora of new opportunity for those with visual
impairments. “I felt liberated, no longer having to rely on others,” said Li,
who can now shop online, WeChat her friends, and go out alone by following her
iPhone compass.

Reading out everything on the screen is helpful, but it can also be
overwhelming. Digital readers don’t decipher human thoughts, so when Li gets on
apps with busy interfaces, such as an ecommerce platform, she’s bombarded with
descriptions before she gets to the thing she wants.

Over the past two years, Alibaba’s $15 billion R initiative Damo Academy has
been working to improve smartphone experience for the blind. Its latest answer,
a joint effort with China’s prestigious Tsinghua University, is a cheap
silicone sheet that goes on top of smartphone screens.

Li is among the first one hundred visually impaired or blind users to trial the
technology. Nothing stands out about the plastic film – which cost RMB 0.25 or
3.6 American cents each to produce – until one has a closer look. There are
three mini buttons on each side. They are sensory-enabled, which means pressing
on them triggers certain commands, usually those that are frequently used like
“go back” and “confirm”.

“It’s much easier to shop with the sheet on,” said Li. Having button shortcuts
removes the risk of misclicking and the need for complex interactions with
screens. Powering Smart Touch is human-machine interaction, the same technology
that makes voice control devices possible.

for the visually impaired. / Photo credit: Alibaba

“We thought, human-machine interaction can’t just be for sighted people,” Chen
Zhao, research director at Damo Academy told TechCrunch. “Besides voice, touch
is also very important to the blind, so we decided to develop a touch feature.”

Smart Touch isn’t just for fingers. It also works when users hold their phones
up to the ears. This lets them listen to text quickly in public without having
to blast it out through speakers or headphones. Early trials of ear touch show
a 50 percent reduction in time needed to complete tasks like taking calls and
online shopping, Alibaba claims.

Emotions also matter. People with visual disabilities tend to be more cautious
as they fumble through screens, so Smart Touch takes that into account. For
instance, users need to double-click on the silicone button before a command
goes through.

At the moment, Smart Touch works only on special editions of Alibaba’s two
flagship apps, e-commerce marketplace Taobao and payment affiliate Alipay. The
buttons automatically take on different functions when users switch between
apps.

But Zhao said she wanted to make the technology widely available. Some
tinkering with existing apps will make Smart Touch compatible. The smart film
requires more testing before it officially rolls out early 2019, so Damo and
Tsinghua have been recruiting volunteers like Li for feedback.

“Unlike with regular apps, it’s hard to beta test Smart Touch because the blind
population is relatively small,” observed the researcher, but embedding the
technology in popular apps could speed up the iteration process.

There’s also the issue with distributing the physical sheets. According to
state census, China had around 13 million visually impaired people in 2012.
That’s about one in a hundred people. However, they are rarely seen in public,
as a post on China’s equivalent of Quora points out.

One oft-cited obstacle is that most roads in China aren’t disability-friendly,
even in major cities. (In my city Shenzhen, blind lanes are common but they
often get cut off abruptly to make way for a crossing or a bus stop.)

Damo doesn’t plan to monetize the initiative, according to Zhao. She envisions
a future where her team could give out the haptic films — which can be mass
produced at low costs — for free through Alibaba’s expanding network of
brick-and-mortar stores.

Time will tell whether the accessibility scheme is more than public relations
fluff. Initiatives around corporate social responsibility have mushroomed in
China in recent years. They have come under fire, however, for being transient
because many merely pander to the government’s demand (link in

Braille iPhone8 or iPhone X & later?

I plan to learn Braille using the iPhone to type the characters. Would it be
better to start with the iPhone 8 or is there any distinct advantage in using
the iPhone X or later? That is an iPhone without the home button.
I have never learned Braille earlier, would it be better to learn contracted
Braille or un contracted Braille?
Any suggestions or advice would be highly appreciated.

the cellular settings, when I turn cellular data on or off I do not know!
Similarly I do not know if LTE is turned on or off! Later I checked in the
shortcuts menu, yet again no announcement off the status of the buttons,
whether we have selected on or off. For example, Enable Caps Lock Double tap to
toggle setting is announced by Voice Over , but it's current status is not
announced! One will never know whether it is on or off!! This is true for all
the items. Selecting settings with iOS 8.1 on my iPhone six is like Russian
roulette!
Comments please!

Looking for a spreadsheet to create, edit and format on your iPhone? I tried a

edit, format, enter formulas, enter text, reference other spreadsheets, and
even formats the text! Besides, I had the added benefit of being able to

Vibrating Glove Teaches Braille

2014-06-27 Thread Dr. Avnish Chopra M.D.
Vibrating Glove Teaches Braille
Ubergizmo

I am a firm believer that the very day in which we stop learning, that is more
often than not the day that we die. Learning Braille is definitely not easy at
all, especially for someone who has not yet lost his or her sight, and for
those who have lost their eyesight and want to pick up Braille, it can be quite
challenging, too. There are concepts in the past that might help ease the
passage of learning, but none of those seem to be able to hold a candle to this
vibrating glove that will be able to let one pick up Braille thanks to the
wonders of passive haptic learning.

Researchers over at the Georgia Institute of Technology have managed to come up
with a glove that will allow users to learn how to read and write Braille, even
when they are focusing on unrelated activities. How does it work? This wearable
computer will rely on miniature vibrating motors that have been sewn into the
knuckles, and it was discovered that motor skills in participants were being
developed without requiring them to focus on the movement of their hands.

It is said that only 10% of the 40 million blind persons worldwide learn
Braille, with the main barrier being schools neglecting this aspect of
learning. Thad Starner, College of Computing Professor at Georgia Tech and
technical lead/manager on Google’s Project Glass, said, “The process is based
on passive haptic learning (PHL). We’ve learned that people can acquire motor
skills through vibrations without devoting active attention to their hands.”

Fleksy Keyboard Makes Its Way To iOS Through Third-Party Apps

2013-12-14 Thread Avnish Chopra
Fleksy Keyboard Makes Its Way To iOS Through Third-Party Apps
Ubergizmo

[image: Fleksy Keyboard Makes Its Way To iOS Through Third Party Apps]If
there’s one thing about Android is that it is not as restrictive compared
to iOS. This means that users are able to customize their device to their
liking, sometimes without even having to root their phone. For example
customization could be a change in launchers, or keyboards, or even
changing the default camera/browser app. Well the good news is that it
looks like some of that customization could be headed iOS’ way in the form
of Fleksy
keyboardhttp://www.ubergizmo.com/2013/12/fleksy-keyboard-for-android-leaves-beta/.
The app has been available on Android and recently left its beta phase, but
its developers have not stopped there and have released an SDK for iOS
developers.

While Fleksy will not be able to replace all of iOS’ keyboards, developers
now have the option to include the keyboard within their apps. Speaking to The
Vergehttp://www.theverge.com/2013/12/12/5201868/fleksy-wants-to-become-your-new-ios-keyboard-everywhere,
Fleksy’s founder, Ioannis Verdelis, was quoted as saying, *“With every new
version of iOS the work required on our part to build a keyboard SDK has
reduced significantly […] We’re [now] doing stuff on iOS that integrates
the keyboard deeper than it’s ever been integrated.” *As it stands there
are a handful of apps that have already integrated Fleksy into their apps,
such as GV Connect, Blindsquare, Wordbox, and Launch. If you’re wondering
what those apps might be like to use with a keyboard different from the
default iOS one, go ahead and check them out.

Bottom buttons in Safari?

2013-11-17 Thread Avnish Chopra
There are a row of five buttons at the bottom of the Safari page.
The back button, forward button, Share button, bookmarks button and
the pages button. In iOS 6 these buttons used to be at the bottom of
each page. In iOS 7 they do not appear on every screen and I have to
scroll down to the bottom of the pages and then get to the buttons.
Let me explain : if there is a website with hundred pages and I want
to go back or forward or use the share button or the bookmark button I
can't do it! I would have to scroll down hundred pages before I can
reach those buttons!
Am I missing something? Is there an easy way to get to the buttons?
And please don't say that I should do a four finger tap at the bottom
of the screen! Thank you.

iOS 7.0.3 Bugs Shown Off In Video

2013-11-12 Thread Avnish Chopra
iOS 7.0.3 Bugs Shown Off In Video
Ubergizmo

There is nothing quite like having a new version of the mobile operating
system installed on your smartphone, as you take advantage of the latest
features and functions introduced by the developers themselves.
Unfortunately for the masses, this would mean that you would often need to
have newer hardware in order to run the most recent version of the
operating system. For those who are running on iOS 7.0.3, you are not out
of the bugs woods just yet. iOS 7.0.3 was originally released to repair
selected bugs which were discovered in iOS 7.0.2, which in turn, was itself
sent out to squash some other issues when iOS 7 was initially released.
Since then, iOS 7.0.3 videos on YouTube have already appeared that depicted
a number of issues and bugs such as the inability of the lockscreen to load
correctly, a bug which will change the wallpaper automatically without
prior permission, a music app that stubbornly refuses to appear in portrait
orientation, issues with YouTube videos that do not show up on the screen,
and a glitch where multitasking is concerned.

Not only that, other iPhone and iPad users who are frustrated with iOS
7.0.3 have also complained about problems surrounding the alarm icon and
missing icons. Hopefully when iOS
7.0.4http://www.ubergizmo.com/2013/11/ios-7-0-4-could-be-close-to-releasing-activity-starting-to-ramp-up/is
released, the bugs nightmare will finally be over.

on the phone number at all instead when voice over reads the phone
number the focus is actually on the inbox!! Any workaround this?
Thank you.

Visus Visual Assist System Could Help Visually Impaired “See”

2013-08-16 Thread Avnish Chopra
Visus Visual Assist System Could Help Visually Impaired “See”
Ubergizmo

I am quite sure that many of us have already heard of this particularly
common phrase, “There’s an app for that.” Sure, that might be true and your
smartphone is a ringing endorsement (pun not intended) for such a saying,
but do bear in mind that not everyone is able to use the smartphone as
intended to, and visually impaired folks happen to fall under this
particular category. Innovators and entrepreneurs from Visus Technology
figured out that they need to do something about this situation, coming up
with a system which will be able to assist visually impaired and blind
people “see” things from a new perspective thanks to the use of wireless
technology.

Known as the Visus Visual Assist system, trials of it happened last month,
involving a bunch of middle-school aged students in a summer enrichment
program over at the world-renowned Carroll Center for the Blind. Each of
these students were equipped with a Samsung smartphone, where they were
then trained on using the Visus app, before being sent out to see just how
helpful this app is. The Visus Visual Assist system was developed in
collaboration with the Verizon Innovation Program, and hopefully, it will
hit the market pretty soon, letting blind and visually-impaired people
recognize faces, determine colors, and navigate their travel. Check out
feedback from the students and teachers in the video above, and be
encouraged. [Press

two mentioned earlier. Any suggestions as to how we can get reader onto

The Blind Have Use For An iPad, Too

The Blind Have Use For An iPad, Too
Ubergizmo

The blind might not be the original target market for the folks over at
Apple with the hugely successful iPad tablet in the first place, but this
does not mean that with a little bit of training, some perseverance, as
well as the right kind of software in place, the blind as well as visually
impaired folks too, are able to take advantage of this popular tablet
device.

As you can check out in the video above from Bloomberg, Jon Erlichman from
the same company participated in a workshop that actually helps instruct
teachers on how one is able to unlock the power of the iPad for the
visually impaired. This is definitely a heart warming video, as we see
barriers being broken down thanks to the wonders of modern technology. I
wonder whether similar training concepts and ideas can be incorporated so
that those who want to use tablets on the Android platform will not feel
left out of the equation.

weekhttp://www.ubergizmo.com/2013/03/ios-6-1-3-released-to-fix-passcode-security-vulnerability/
in
order to help fix its passcode security flaw, but it looks as though Apple
may have rushed its release a tad as a number of iOS users who updated to
the latest version are complaining of both battery drain and Wi-Fi issues.

A number of iOS users have taken to Apple’s Support Communities forum to
reveal iOS 6.1.3 has been draining their batteries more quickly than it did
in iOS 6.1.2. Some users even reported a continued drain on their battery
even after they turned off all notifications and even going as far as
restoring their device to its factory settings.

Google Glass App Identifies People By Clothes, Hints At Tech That Could Counter Face Blindness

2013-03-09 Thread Avnish Chopra
Google Glass App Identifies People By Clothes, Hints At Tech That Could
Counter Face Blindness
TechCrunch » Gadgets

That problem where you’re meeting someone for the first time, maybe to pick
up something you bought through Craigslist? Google Glass can help with
that. A new app designed for Google’s upcoming smart-mounted computer will
be able to identify people based on what they’re wearing. The so-called InSight
projecthttp://www.newscientist.com/article/mg21729075.600-google-glass-app-identifies-you-by-your-fashion-sense.html
(via
9to5Googlehttp://9to5google.com/2013/03/08/google-glass-app-from-duke-university-recognizes-people-by-what-they-wear/?utm_source=feedburnerutm_medium=twitterutm_campaign=Feed%3A+9to5Google+%289to5+Google+-+Beyond+Good+and+Evil%29)
is funded in part by Google and developed by University of South Caroline
and Duke University researchers, and uses a smartphone app to develop a
clothing-based digital fingerprint to help identify strangers.

The app would let users like sellers on Craigslist, or members of online
dating sites, or anyone meeting someone for the first time create a profile
of themselves using their smartphone camera, and shots from various angles.
InSight would then piece together a virtual profile of that person based on
what they’re wearing, which could then be used by Google Glass to make a
positive ID when that person comes within range of its visual sensors. It’s
very sci-fi, it’s very cool, and best of all, it’s very accurate: in tests
so far the researchers behind the project have been able to get a positive
match 93 percent of the time.

The system uses clothes because it provides more visual signals at a
distance to help with identification, and also because it keeps a
user’s identity more or less private, since all they have to do is change
clothes in order to not be identified by the same person’s Google Glass
application in the future. But it could be refined to help with
prosopagnosia, otherwise known as face blindness, and that’s where Google
Glass’s therapeutic potential really starts to become apparent.

Prosopagnosia may affect up to 2.5 percent of the world’s population to
varying degrees, according to a recent
studyhttp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19334306,
so while rare a system that corrects it could still have a significant
impact. InSight, or technology like it, could help by identifying people
based on their facial characteristics and keeping a stored database of
people know to the Google Glass wearer, so that they can ‘recognize’ faces
thanks to information provided through their heads up display.

The same kind of tech could also help with visual
agnosiahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_agnosia,
a disorder resulting from strokes that can render a patient incapable of
identifying everyday objects. And for more quotidian uses, it could work in
tandem with language learning software to help learners identify the world
around them in their target tongue.

Google Glass may not be something consumers can buy quite
yethttp://techcrunch.com/2013/02/22/google-glass-2013-release-date-price/,
but it’s already showing that it could have plenty of applications beyond
just acting as an extension of your smartphone.

Best way to view the group emails?

2012-05-11 Thread Avnish Chopra
Hi! Can someone please tell me what is the best way to read the
emails. I mean I use the iPhone to have them read out to me. I find I
get a lot of repetition and the emails come on mixed up. I get a lot
of links read-out to me and it's no fun at all. I wish all the emails
could come without on the text before and after you could make feeding
so much easier. Also it would make more sense. Can you please suggest?
Thank you and many blessings!
This email was dictated to my iPhone. So please excuse the typos!
