RE: How to be blind episode 45

I listened to this podcast yesterday and really enjoyed it. Now that I took
the time to listen and must say that I liked the discussion and content of
the podcast, I will definatly listen again. All that this discussion has
done is to spark my interest of the file and for all the time that people
have been complaining about it, they could have listened to the entire
podcast. Thank you for producing this production and hope for more.

Or at least how it relates to the iPhone. Sending me to a website is kind
of like spam from other companies.

I'd rethink the marketing strategy.

Donald,

the idea is to drive listers to the website. If the person would have told
you outright what the subject matter was then you would probably delete the
message. By giving you such little information and a link, the goal is for
you to be curious enough to click. At this point you are now on their
website and can read about their many other offerings. I don't like when
people do this as it makes me feel like I'm being manipulated, but this is
how some do things.

Hi Jerry, Thanks for this. I got the app but it like most don't have the
feeds for police, fire and ambulance here in my area. I know that my trunk
tracker handheld scanner can get them but wonder why they are not being
streamed. Anyways, Thanks again for this app, it gives me lots of

Hi Jay,

Yes, Navigon's voice guidance works if the screen is locked or if the app is
in the background. Many of us use Navigon to setup a route, then open
another app like Sendero LookAround, Ariadne or BlindSquare to get better
announcvements about upcoming cross streets etc.

When GPS apps are running, battery does get used up a lot, so what you
describe including the fact the iPhone got a little warm all sounds pretty
normal. Locking the screen will definitely help some.

Hi. Well, the trip that I took by car yesterday went well testing my Navigon
app and it was very helpful hearing about different streets as my dad took a
different rout than the app wanted him to take and it had to recalibrate. I
used it with a set of Aftershocks headphones plugged in and am wondering
about the battery usage yesterday. I left home fully charged and after the
trip, 45 minutes later, it had used up 30 percent of my battery. I am
wondering if this was accessive or not and am also wondering if the app
would have continued to work and give me turn by turn navigation with the
lock screen active. During that whole trip, the phone was unlocked. Has
anyone tried Navigon with the screen locked and does it still work? Is there
any way to save a little battery life on the phone as I found that the rapid
discharge actually caused my phone to heat up.

The first thing that you have to do after downloading the app is to go through
a couple of Navigon warning screens and then the maps download screen will come
up with an accept changes button on the bottom left. Get the maps you want and
then it is all self explanatory from there.

It all depends on where you are going to travel with the app. I will hardly
ever in my life get outside of Canada so only downloaded that and not the
North America full version of the app. If I could have only gotten the
Ontario map, and paid less than the whole Canadian version, I would have

that mean that I go for Navigon North America, Navigon USA, or Navigon U.S>

RE: Skype problems

Hi Sieghard. Thanks for this. I was able to get my outgoing call to choose
the speakerphone. I am wondering if there is a way to have the speakerphone
chosen by default instead of the earpiece.

Subject: RE: Skype problems

Hello,

I haven't had a reason to use Skype since the last update, but I did try it
tonight after I read your message and had none of the problems you describe.
Here is an explanation about how to switch to speakerphone, this works as it
has for at least the last several versions and it still works perfectly well
on my 4S:

Establish your call, once you are connected you have to find a button along
the bottom (above the home key) called Earpiece. This indicates the call is
currently coming through the earpiece. The button is I think the second from
the left, just above and a bit to the left of the home key (about 10
o'clock).

Double tap on that button and a little bit above and about in the middle of
the screen (straight up from the Home Key) it a couple of new buttons will
pop up, one of them is Speakerphone.

Double tap on it and the call will switch to Speakerphone.

I recommend you practice this first with the headset since you do of course
have to take the phone away from your ear far enough to activate the touch
screen. Without a headset you have to hold it close enough to hear what you
are doing yet far enough so you can touch and tap.

This works the same for a video call and switching from front facing to
backfacing camera also works in the same way.

If you are on a video call, the very first button on the left will bring up
buttons above for front facing, back facing and no video which allows you
turn off the camera if you started a call as a video call and want to stop
the camera, but not end the call.

On a normal Skype-to-Skype or Skype-to-Phone Call the first button on the
left is Mute, then I believe comes the earpiece button. Then there is
another one or 2 buttons and last on the very right is always your End Call
button.

If you do use a headset the button will I believe say Headset and not
Earpiece and once you switch to Speakerphone it will say Speakerphone.

If you want to switch the call back to the earpiece or headset, double tap
again on Speakerphone and then find the earpiece/headset button above.

Now as far as calls dropping after 10 minutes I also don't seem to have that
issue. I have 2 Skype Id's and signed in with on on the computer and then
called my other one on the iPhone. The first call did drop after only about
20 seconds, at first I heard the sounds Skype makes when it tries to
reconnect a call, but after about 20 seconds it dropped the call. I then did
2 other calls and each time I placed my headset microphone next to my
computer's speaker where I started playing music just so that Skype didn't
think nothing was going on and disconnect, then I switched Skype on the
iPhone to Speakerphone and went to the kitchen to make dinner listening to
the music playing via my Skype connection. I let the music play for about 15
minutes each time and there was no sign of the call having connection
difficulties.

Maybe it just so happened that your WiFi connection was flaky or Skype was
exceptionally busy.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi all, I have put skype on my phone and I have 2 problems with it that I
can't figure out. 1 is that I can't get the call to come up on the speaker
phone in either voice call or video call. Both ways I have to hold the phone
up to my ear to hear the conversation. The other problem is that it seems to
drop the call after about 10 minutes of calling. Any fix for this? I am
making free skype to skype calls and not paid skype to phone calls when both
these problems occur and don't think that makes a difference as the person I
am talking to can talk on speaker phone. The calls are being done over y Fi

RE: SPAM email, hacked email accounts and password safety

2013-01-14 Thread Exracer
Though this info is useful you have forgotten about the simple malware that
may or may not be on her computer. It also can cause mass Email messages to
be sent out if the address of the group is in her address book. All it takes
is a simple bit of malware to do what you have seen here. It doesn't have to
be as complicated as a hacked account for this to happen. It should be noted
that this probably came from a PC Email address book hack and not from an
iPhone hack as I have never heard of anything like that happening from such
a device. Thank you Apple for your built in security!

Hi List,

I have seen this before, it is clearly SPAM and since Anna is a legitimate
list member it probably means somebody hacked her account. This is why I am
also forwarding this message to Raul directly in case he didn't have time
yet to read it. Hopefully he has a way to contact Anna or maybe she will
read this post. She needs to change her password immediately and I would
probably hazard a guess and say her password was probably a fairly simple
word. I can only stress again how important it is for people who use a word
even if it is 8 or 10 characters long and contains maybe a number or 2 to
change it to a random password with upper case and lower case letters,
numbers and symbols. Not all websites allow symbols, but if they do use
them. Here is a good article about password strength and it contains a
method I have been using for some time. The article gets a bit technical at
times, but I encourage everybody to read it anyhow:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Password_strength#Creating_and_handling_passwor
ds

In section 5.2 a method called "mnemonic passwords" is described like this:

Password policies sometimes suggest memory techniques to assist remembering
passwords:

mnemonic passwords: Some users develop mnemonic phrases and use them to
generate high-entropy (more or less random) passwords which are nevertheless
relatively easy for the user to remember. For instance, the first letter of
each word in a memorable phrase. Silly ones are possibly more memorable.

I suggest not to use a well-known quote like "To be or not to be, that is
the question". Use something out of your life that makes sense to you. For
example:

I really like Clive Cussler books, for those who aren't familiar with them
the 2 main characters are Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino, one of my favourite
books of his is called "Inca Gold", it was first published in 1994.

Using this information I make up the following sentence:

Inca Gold is my favorite Cussler book; Pitt and Giordino are awesome! 1994

Note I used upper case for the first leeters of the book title"Inca Gold"
and capitalized the first letters of all the names. I used a semicolon in
the middle of the sentence an exclamation mark at the end and I stick the
year when the book was published at the end. This sentence contains 12
words, 2 symbols and 4 numbers. If I use the first letter of each word, the
2 symbols and numbers it gives me an 18-character password. I know this may
be too long for many and it's sort of a pain to enter it especially on a
virtual keyboard, but this is just an example although you should use at
least 12 characters to have a really secure password. If I were to use this,
the resulting password would be this:

IGimfCb;PaGaa!1994

I do actually use 14 to 18-character passwords for iTunes and other sites
where my credit card is stored, entering them becomes pretty easy after you
do it a few times and on the PC I use Roboform to fill them for me. Anyhow,
I think my point is clear, a sentence like this is easier to remember than a
12-character password generated by a random password generator, but it's
just as random to anybody else or to a password cracking program. OK, enough
said, keep save online and for those who have kids, teach them not to use
their best friends name or birth date as a password, if you use this method
coming up with good passwords becomes a habit like brushing your teeth.

Regards,

Sieghard

some advice on using it with Siri. So far they work great to listen to music
and to answer phone calls. I run into trouble when trying to send a text
message. When I send a text on my 4S using Siri, I usually do the following.
Ask Siri to send a text to whom ever. Siri responds with what would you like
to say to whom ever? I say the text and Siri ask if I would like to send and
I say send. This does not work when using the Aftershokz headphones. I have
to combine the first 2 commands into one and say the following. Send
whomever a text with the message ofSiri responds with would you like to
send the message and I then say send. I am wpondering why the 3 step command
works without the headphones and doesn't with? Any suggestions?

I use the official Bible Gateway app. I like the way it is laid out and if
you use the menu button at the top left, it is easy to navigate around to
find what you want.

The earbuds have a button on they used to have a button on to do it.

I know they're cutting back on things, taking away the button would be the
last straw or last word for sure.

Hi, the bigger round one is the window to show off the Apple logo. The
smaller one in the corner is the back facing camera, which is the better
one.

RE: Twitter, how do I get started?

2012-12-06 Thread Exracer
Hi Jenny, I was able quite easily I must say to create a user name and
password for Twitter on the official Twitter client for iPhone. My name on
there to follow is

@jphinnemore

Now, I see a button to create a tweet so I guess that is easy enough but can
you explain the tabs at the bottom of the screen and what they do exactly? I
for example would like to follow some of the NASCAR stuff going on and Jimmy
Johnson in particular. I will have to check the spelling of his last name
though.

First of all, you need to download a twitter client such as the native
Twitter app or TwitList Pro. Then you need to create an account there.
Hopefully that will help get you started on the right path.

Hi Jen, I think if I remember right that there is a special symbols keyboard
that is built into the OS. I forget what the keystroke is to activate it but
I have seen it before.

Sorry I spelled it wrong and just noticed now.
Still wondering where to find the other symbols? I can't believe they would

% is one thing, &, often spelled ampersand, is another.

I've never found anything like it that isn't obvious that it isn't.

No, they are completely different symbols with different usage.

I don't know how to make the upsidedown symbols.
