Re: Amazon app now inaccessible?

2014-06-16 Thread Harmony Neil
Know what you mean. I liked the older layout better when they had the tabs
along the bottom and the searchbox was easier to find, but now you have to go
looking for the searchbox, and as you say, the buttons for menu etc are all
over the place. You can only find stuff like basket and wishlist once you go
into the menu button now.

Accessibility Issue With The Dominos Pizza App

2013-04-28 Thread Harmony Neil
Hellow,
I would not like to recommend the above app for dominos pizza. The buttons are
not labelled properly, and by the look of it they've made the buttons etc way
too big, so some of them are overlapping one another, so when you do the swipe
left or right, you get the buttons and things repeated over and over again.
Just thought I'd share my disappointment that this app is not as accessible as
I had hoped.

Don't know. I guess when you just want to get stuff done, it's rather nice to

 Hi all,

A few weeks ago, I did an audio demo of bubble island. It's a bit obsolete
since version 2.0 was released yesterday, but the game play is essentially
the same. in version 2.0, one of the time boosts was removed to be replaced
by a plasma boost, a level system was introduced, and some other visual
aspects of the game were changed. Here is the link for the demo. It's truly
a fun and addicting game. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to
 write me off list.

Re: Accessible games for iPhone

2013-02-28 Thread Harmony Neil
It depends what kind of games you're looking for. I've mainly got word games
on my iPhone, but do also have Lost Cities which is a card game and bubble
island which I think is a facebook game. I do also have Slap Game or whatever
that bopit thing is called, but the score isn't read by voiceover sadly.
Mudding is rather pointless on the iPhone, unless you have a bluetooth
keyboard, and even then, I don't believe the mud clients have sounds, although
I could be wrong as I haven't used any mud clients on the iphone for a long
while.

 Alan,

I personally highly rate the cases from Tech21, they offer three styles for
the iPhone 5 and other models of iPhone / iPad etc.

These are; a band that only protects the side, leaving the back and front
exposed, useful if you're desperate to show off your Apple logo on the
reverse :)… Then the shell style which is a back and sides, I have this
type… and finally, a shell with leather folding flap that covers the front
 as well…

I personally did not go for the leather screen cover for several reasons…
Firstly, I've never yet, really should not have wrote that :), damaged the
screen of any of my iOS devices, but I have scratched, chipped and
generally marked the backs and sides, so these are the areas I consider
require protecting. I do not use a screen protector.

The Tech21 cases are unique in their protection over all other cases, they
add all but nothing by way of weight and mass to your device, only about a
few mil each side, yet they protect in a amazing way.

Tech21 use D3O impact technology, which is a revolutionary material
invented by the military to protect things, its now found in extreme sports
wear and other things like that…

Basically, its coloured orange if you can see anything, not the case mark
you, just the D3O which of course is inside the case away from view.

What it does is spread the energy from an impact across the whole case
dispersing it. The material is relatively hard when in its relaxed state,
though upon impact it becomes a soft gel like substance.

I have broken a number of iOS devices before I started using these cases,
and can tell you now that they are both designed well, Aesthetically
pleasing, but, importantly add a whole load of protection without bulking
 up the device.

That part is rather confusing. If you are talking about the first part when
you open the app up for the first time?

This is the Tutorial part of where you have to swipe to go on with the four
 pages of it.

The secret is is that flick until you get to the part where it says Page 1
of 4. Now realize that we are in the landscape mode with the Home button on
the left. Once you have the focus on the Page 1 of 4. Down do the Three
fingers swipe to the left. This will proceed on to Page 2. You will need to
do this for all four pages of the Tutorial.

Hope this helps you out and that we are talking about the same thing? ;)

Re: Braille displays emoticons

Probably because the things are made up of stuff like brackets and other such
punctuation. The screen readers only read them correctly because people put
them in the dictionaries.

Re: Adding a phone number to contacts that was in your email.

2013-01-14 Thread Harmony Neil
Hellow,
I had to do a similar thng yesterdy. Just click on the call option then hang
up as soon as it connects. You can then go to phone and recents. Next to the
most ecent number you called, there's a more info button, so press this and
then you have the usual options of calling, facetiming etc. You can add the
number to an existing contact from here or create a new contact as well.
Hope that helps,
Harmony.

Re: Tax exemptions, was: You can by apple products in the UK VAT free if your blind.

2012-12-31 Thread harmony . neil
Don't know if anyone's mentioned this, but I've heard that all the apple
products blind people in the UK can be exempt from VAT or whatever it is if
they buy fom the Apple stores. All their products except the iPhone itelf
apparently. I don't know why or if it's true, but that's just what I was told
by a friend a few days ago.

 Hi List,

The topic about taxes on Apple products especially in the UK where there is a
very high VAT has come up again and again over the last couple of months. I
just wanted to comment that it should be up to organisations like the RNIB in
the UK, the CNIB in Canada, the NFB in the States and so on to sort this out
with the government. In a way I would argue that even though a Mac or an
iPhone is not specifically made for the blind, Apple has invested a lot of
money and effort to make it into a device for the blind and, as a rule, a
much less expensive device than products specifically designed for the blind.
This could be easily regulated by setting straight forward rules for when a
person could obtain a tax exemption, e.g. it could be done by providing a
certificate from a Doctor stating that the person really is blind and
entitled for the exemption. You would then take this to the Apple Store to
get your product without paying taxes.

RE: You can by apple products in the UK VAT free if your blind.

I've never heard of that anyway. As far as I'm concerned the price of an app
is the price of an app which everyone pays, blind or otherwise.

Hi Neel and list,
well I can see you have done thorough research, but my question is why have
three separate apple stores told different people that they can by apple
products vat free?
I would suggest the fact apple includes VoiceOver means they have adapted
the product to be useful to the visually impaired.
I suggest this issue should be investigated further, as we already know
apple stores have mixed training about this, so its quite possible HMRC
might be giving out inaccurate information as well.

Alex,

I suspect I'm afraid that it is the wrong way around at Apple's stores. HMRC
are correct, their articles state so, their people state so, the RNIB
web-site states so, my experience and understanding states so, as do my
qualified certified auditors.

Apple will just be getting confused. they've likely been told by a client
and its gone around like Chinese whispers. I will though, for good measure
ring one of these Apple stores in question to see what they have to say.

As stated though in my earlier detailed message, the case speaks for itself.
When you consider the rules on nil rating VAT.

The item can only be considered for nil rating where it is exclusively built
for the blind, or, where a modification is done to it to make it usable. The
modification is not a modification if it is a feature for all users,
irrespective of disability.

In this instance, every iPHone since the 3GS has had Voice Over installed,
and as such, the phones are not nil rateable under these conditions.

OK, now I've just phoned the three main London Apple Stores that I could
think of off the top of my head. Two stated that they have heard of this,
but, that the reduction of VAT is something that would be the responsibility
of the customer to arrange, that they had no facility to lower their prices.
Other than of course by the known discounts offered by Apple directly.

So that clears it up, if you went and bought your phone from Apple, then
submitted the relevant claim form to HMRC, they would reject it on the bases
that you would have to declare that no modification has taken place to your
phone beyond standard manufacturing methods and the standard product
specification.

I want to run my Focus 40 Blue with my 3-GS which is running IOS 6. If my
understanding is correct, I should find braille somewhere under settings.
So I went to settings, general, and accessibility, but found no braille.
So, where is braille?

Incidentally, this is not the current incarnation of the Focus; it is the
earlier one with the whiz wheels.

On a related note, I don't know if it was on this list or on the one to
which I am no longer subscribed which switched to Google Groups.
Somewhere in the past, I remember seeing a message, perhaps from Esther,
which indicated that when using the Focus 40 with a 3-GS, there was a trick
to re-awakening the 3-GS, if some time had elapsed since the last braille
keystroke. Please, could someone refresh my very fallible memory as to what
that trick is. Also, after locating braille in settings, just what are the
steps to pair the 3-GS with the Focus?

Thanks much.

Re: THINKING ABOUT A MAC!

2012-06-23 Thread Harmony Neil
I got a macbook pro just over a week ago, but don't want to install windows on
this machine. I've been using it for mail, twitter, Skype and sometimes MSN,
but setting up to play muds takes a lot of effort and playing around with the
terminal. Pretty cool though once you get it up and working.
Yes it was expensive to buy, but it'll be worth it, since I don't have a
licensed copy of Office pro on my windows laptop and you can save things as
word format with text edit on the mac anyway. /the only thing I'm not too sure
how to do is make a table in text edit, although I did see something in the
menus for that.
Just a final point for now, I think the sound quality is better than that on a
windows laptop. I can hear voiceover just fine at 55% on the mac I'm writing
from now, but on the windows laptop, I have to turn NVDA up to 85 or 90% to be
able to hear it properly. The only time I've needed to use earphones is when
talking on Skype or playing games, because the tintin++ sounds are pretty quiet
sometimes. For that though, you can use the earphones from the iPhone if you
have one, since they're apple ones.
Oh, I almost forgot to say, the software for the mac is either nicely built-in
and very accessible (including the chess game), o else free or very cheap. If
you wanted office for the mac, for example, you would only have to pay £89, but
for windows version you have to pay over £400.
The only real thing I don't appreciate is having the @ symbol on the 2 key
instead of the ' key as it's meant to be in the UK keyboard layout, unless
that's just a windows thing.
Hope this extremely long e-mail helps,
Harmony.

Stop that! Going back and forth is the worst thing you can do! Trust me on

 Hi Carol ,

I went to the Apple store, who were not much help, and tried to find

I guess my problems stem from me going back and forth between Zoom and
voice over, something I do all the time on my PC. I do have some vision, so
I only want to use the screen reader for a few things. I can not find the
proper settings to run it like I run my PC. Perhaps they do not exist.

I run both Mac and PC through the same monitor using a VGA A B switch.
I am currently on a PC with Zoom Text, which never fails to disappoint me.
As said above, there is a learning curve, it does not seem as intuitive as
 the iPhone.
 Just my two cents worth,

Re: making a phone call working with an automated system

I haven't read this whole thread, but I normally either use earphones or more
often just put the phone on loudspeaker and find the numbers and take my finger
off (using the touch typing system here).

I'm sorry but that doesn't help with the 4S. No matter how high you set the

The best work around I've found is to plug in headphones. It wasn't this way
with my 3GS but is a royal pain with the 4S.

Hi all. I currently have the i phone 4s. I can dial on it to make a phone
call. When the automated system comes on, however the keypad doesn't speak
and I can't imput the numbers that I need in to the phone to work with the
paratransit automated system. Any way to make this work?

I just use the built in weather app, or else the met office one, but the met
office app is only for the UK and is somewhat limited.

What are people using these days as far as a weather application for the

RE: Heytell question

2012-05-07 Thread Harmony Neil
I was told you have to have your own contact in your contacts as well.
Sounds a bit stupid, but still. I can't remember how I did it either, as I
don't have my hey tell connected to twitter or facebook.

Subject: Heytell question

Hi list,
I have posted this to another list, so some of you who are there might have
read it.
Please does anyone of you use Heytell?
I've been playing with it for a while and I cannot figure out some things.
When I click on profile, there are a few options - to sign on twitter,
facebook or to go to my address book to select my contact information from
there.
What if I do not have either twitter or facebook account? I have heard from
someone that it is also possible to put my e-mail address somehow, but I
cannot find the editbox to put it there.
Is it really necessary to put my e-mail address in my phone addressbook? It
sounds a bit silly for me having my own contact added in addressbook when I
perfectly remember it. *smiles* When I open address book, there is something
like my number. at first I thought I could click on it to add my e-mail
there, but it does not work that way.
When I access address book from Heytell, my number contact does not seem to
be there, but I am sure it is stored in address book. I cann see other
contacts there.
Does anyone know how to solve Heytell thing? Is there any other way to put
e-mail address?
Your help would be very greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
Maria

RE: elusive OCR App!

Agree. I liked that knfb reader, but ended up selling the phone because I
had an iPhone and the n82 was just sat there doing nothing, except OCR.

Subject: elusive OCR App!

as a previous user of KNFB Mobile Reader and user of the TextScout from
www.textscout.eu I have tried many paid and free OCR apps for the iphone.
Sadly not one has come anywhere close to the awesome performance of the
above two apps. Why are we not being given one?
Surely there are enough iPHONE users who would gladly pay to have a working
app on there iPhone.
With KNFB and TextSCOUT one could read entire books, magazines, medical
bottle labels, small text etc on the go with almost 98 percent accuracy.
None of the iPhone apps are even half as accurate!
Will the powers that be, prevail on these companies to come out with a
version for the iPhone? Please!
If anyone knows of a working OCR app, please share the info.
Many thanks!
