Hi,

I've tried using it with a Galaxy S3; some difficulty maintaining the
connection and with keys not always being voiced.

Cheers,

I'll defer to anyone who's tried using this keyboard with their iPhone, but
it should work for the most part. The bluetooth protocols are standard. I'd
suspect you'd lose some IOS customizations though, like no key caps for
command and option or shortcuts for home.

 Any tips? thanks

Hi listers,

I have found it reasonable running on a 4S, but I do wish that they hadn't
meddled around with Calendar and Reminders, and some buttons seem to be much
more sensitive, activating almost before you've touched them.

Actually, I'm running an iPhone 4 with 32 GB. iOS 7 was quirky but point 1
and point 2 did make it better and I also ran iClean on it witch seemed to
make it run even better. It isn't running as fast as the previous version
of the OS but it seems to be getting the job done anyway.

Hi,

First, since I'm running an iPhone 5, and its 32GB, this doesn't really
affect me. But, if I was running an iPhone 4, with 16 or even 8GB, I think
this would really piss me off. And not to mention the space taken up by a
download you don't want, and had no choice in declining, your only option is
to then install to free up the space to an OS which the hardware is under
powered to use smoothly. I think this is really the point of Pablo's
frustration. He was in a total lose lose situation. Have a big chunk of
space taken up by an update, or, install the update and have your phone
sluggish as all hell. I'm just curious, are any of you guys running an
iPhone 4? I bet you aren't. lol. If so, I think you would be singing a
slightly different tune.

I'm wondering what exactly people are having trouble with in the new
calendar?

I do personally have things I'd like to see done a bit differently but
depending on what you're after, here are a few tips.

When you open the calendar, the day you have selected will automatically be
the one shown, so that you can very quickly look through everything you have
on that day.

the Today button at the bottom moves you to Today immediately, but you can
select from the current week (by default) from the days at the top of the
screen.

YOu can advance by week by doing a three-finger swipe from right to left and
move to the previous week by doing a three-finger swipe from left to right.

When you have an event at a particular time during the day, you can
double-tap on that event and it's details will come up and you can edit some
of these as well as bring up the Contact (if any) that invited you,
directly, so that you can immediately call / text / FaceTime etc them.

.

Does any of this help, or is all of this old news? :)

Hope you're having a great day and talk with y'all soon!

Smiles,

Cara :)

you install it, it will ask if it can access your calendar, Say ok and all

Wish I had a better solution, but there you go.

Thank you for sharing. I absolutely cannot stand the compact British English
voice. Sounds like Daniel with well I don't know, cinucitis maybe! Lol! But
the one compact voice I do like is Irish English. Not really tried the
Australian and U.S. English voices yet in compact mode.

 Hi all,

As one who uses the new Nuance Vocalizer Expressive voices to develop
with them for other platforms, I wanna to explain to you all, what are
the iOS 7 voices and which of them are being used when.

 So, let's start from sirie:

The new and better Sirie voices are not Vocalizer Expressive voices.

These are custom voices that Nuance or some other company makes a
specially for Apple, I think it's Nuance because Apple always works
with them on TTS related stuff.

Now, let's move on to VoiceOver:

In iOS 6, Apple used the Nuance Vocalizer for automotive version 5.5
platform for it's screen reader and Sirie.

Since Nuance stopped supporting and developing Vocalizer for
Automotive, and released Vocalizer Expressive, in iOS 7, Apple has
swiched to using these voices for VoiceOver.

Most of them sound the same as the previous generation of Vocalizer,
such as Samantha Premium for example, they just read longer texts better.

The Vocalizer Expressive platform contains some new and very
expressive voices, but Apple decided to use the ones that wer already
available, because they are still offerd with Vocalizer Expressive, or VE
for short.

Some other facts that thanks to them you can know it's the new
Expressive version, are the bad compact voices, a specially Daniel,
and the new voices for some languages such as Arabic, they have
replaced Maged with Tarik for this language because Nuance doesn't offer
Maged any more.

Vocalizer Expressive has a Hebrew voice as well, so I hope Apple will
 add it soon too:) (Smile).

Hope now you understand it better..

 Adi.

RE: Question about updating maps for Navigon.

2013-05-14 Thread Mike Cassidy
Hello listers,

On a similar line, if you have bought Navigon in the UK, do you have to
purchase another Navigon programme if you wish to use Navigon in the US, or can
you purchase North American maps to use with your original version?

Thanks for any help,

Regards,

You get free updates for a certain amount of time, then they cost money.

I am just asking because someone told me, in Navigon extras there is
something like maps update and it cost about 35 dollars.
Is there anyway to find out if I have all my maps updated?
Thank you very much for your help; it will be very highly appreciated.

The first radial button is Summary. Tab to the second radial button (I
do not remember its title) and press space to check it. Tab to the
information area and check sync contacts, then choose Outlook in the
combo box. You do the same thing for appointments.

If you want them to sync across iCloud, choose iCloud in this area so
iTunes knows to sync contacts and such using iCloud.

Hello listers,

I know someone who obtained their iPhone at discount, but who knows how the

Hi Neel and list,
well I can see you have done thorough research, but my question is why have
three separate apple stores told different people that they can by apple
products vat free?
I would suggest the fact apple includes VoiceOver means they have adapted
the product to be useful to the visually impaired.
I suggest this issue should be investigated further, as we already know
apple stores have mixed training about this, so its quite possible HMRC
might be giving out inaccurate information as well.

Mapquest4Mobile is free and you can set the route to pedestrian.
The new version has lots of unlabelled buttons. I'm working on a set of
instructions for how to label them, but I haven't had time.
My wife helped me get them labeled but I need to sit down and go through it
very carefully to make sure I'm explaining it correctly.
What I like about the new version is that if you have it set to driving
mode, and you set up a route that is fairly short, it will pop up and say,
that is a very short route, would you rather walk? Then a clearly labeled
button for driving or walking is there.
The same thing happens if you set a really long route in pedestrian mode, it
will ask if you would rather drive, and give the two options.

HTH,
Richard

RE: Fahrenheit app

2012-06-28 Thread Mike Cassidy
Hi listers,

I use the Celsius version; it's helpful to know that and to be able to see
the outside temperature quickly.

Thanks and regards,

Yeh, it's funny how it does that because, at first, you think you have 85
new items till you get used to it, lol.

Hi, a badge icon is the number which shows up after the name of the app.
The mail app is a good example. So, if you have 55 new messages, it will
say, Mail, 55 new items. The Fahrenheit app uses the badges to show the
current temperature. So, if it's 85 degrees out, it will say Fahrenheit,
85 new items.

Hope that helps.

Hi. By default it will show you the temperature as a badge icon on
the home screen. To look at the forecast, just double tap the
program on your home screen and when it opens it will show you the
list. It uses location services to determine where you are. So if
you have those enabled then it should work fine. If you disabled
your location services, then you will have to add a location
 manually from within the app.

 I hope this helps.

Hey all. I let this thread go on for a bit longer than I probably should
have, considering the closeness between Macs and iOS devices. However now
this thread has deteriorated into heated discussions about screen readers
and whether people know what they are talking about or not.
Whatever the case is, it's definitely off topic when it comes to iOS
devices.

So, let's stop further Mac discussions. Please take them to more appropriate
lists.

Thank you.

Hi, if you jailbreak your iPhone, it cannot be serviced. Also, if you
jailbreak your iPhone, and call for tech support and mention that it's
jailbroken, they probably won't help you. However if you jailbreak your
iPhone and ever have to have it serviced, a restore of the software will
remove the jailbreak. All that being said, there are 2 apps which come
to mind which might fit the bill for you.

1. Filer. This app doesn't require a jailbreak. It allows you to upload
files, such as music, documents, or whatever to the iPhone. Then from
the app, you can manage or do whatever with these files, i.e. open them
in other applications, ETC. If you just tap the music files you upload,
you can listen to the music that way. However this isn't the same
experience as using the built-in Music app of the iPhone. Basically,
everything you upload to Filer will stay in Filer, but no jailbreak is
necessary.

2. PWN Tunes. This is a jailbreak only app. Basically when you connect
your iPhone to the pc, you can go to sever folders inside it, just like
a usb stick. One of these folders is called my music and if you copy
music there, you can later listen to it from the iPhone Music player.
When you want to remove it, just connect it to the pc again and remove
it from that same folder and it will be gone from the music player.

Good luck.

Hi all, I feel that what David and Neil have stated are more correct for
what it's worth. I personally have not looked up or researched whether or
not it's a good idea to force a reboot via the power button being pressed
multiple times, but on the surface it just seems silly and not safe to me.
At least when you do the power button/home button for 12 seconds, it's
giving the iOS system a chance to try and do what it can so that files and
data are not being accessed while the phone is forced to reboot. This is why
it's probably a several second process.
Additionally, it could be that it's on purpose so you don't accidentally
reboot your phone without meaning to.

Lastly, folks, please update the subject lines. smile

An Apple support person is the one who told me that the home and power

restores the driver stacks. From my timing of both restarts, the reboot
takes longer for booting up than the power cycling for booting up.

To be precise, the higher level support specialist told me to first turn
the iPhone off then on, and once it has come fully on, do the reboot.

Sorry, but I trust both of these people over what you are saying on the

Crashing your springboard is not a forced collapsing of the iOS

the part of iOS from which apps are launched. It does not store any
 critical user data.

I think there are a fair few misconceptions about this topic on list.
I don't mean to be argumentative but it is important that people
understand them, and that if you have a theory (such as that data
corruption could occur) that you make clear that it is just that--a
theory. People who are stating this theory have relatively little

My strong recommendation for all iOS users, is to empty their App
Switcher daily and perform a power cycle immediately there after.

This has kept my iPhone and iPad running smoothly ever since the
 first stuttering symptoms appeared.

In addition, as a system admin I also hold to David's assertion that
there is a possible chance of corruption by performing the forced
collapsing of the iOS platform resulting from the 5 successive presses
of the power key.

The iOS device at this time is not expecting this crash and as a
result maybe accessing a key string of code, or a significant part
of your user data. If this happened at the exact moment you
performed the 5 successive presses of the power key, it is conceivable
that it might corrupt data.

The 12 second or however long it is, press of power and home at the

iOS as a sort of. I want to reboot this device, prepare for it

RE: Voice Book and philosophy [was Re: tried]

2012-05-26 Thread Mike Cassidy
Hi listers,

As with so much, preference is surely the key. In the early days of
computing in the UK we used completely custom-made wordprocessors, databases
etc. As accessibility to mainstream systems improved, we graduated
accordingly. I will look at most apps, including Voicebook, to see if it
enhances my use of Facebook; if it does, I'll use it gratefully. We should
be careful about dismissing assistive technology and guidance; I would never
want to say: 'I won't use Anna's book because it has been written for blind
users'.

This is just my personal opinion, and I don't intend to force this opinion
on anyone else or flame anyone, but I disagree for myself.
Although I fully embrace using mainstream applications, I'm not going to
turn a back on an application or a device that makes my life easier or more
convenient just because it was written with accessibility in mind.

What are our alternatives here? Use inadequate, hard to use or inaccessible
applications while we're working with Facebook to make their sites and apps
more accessible?

I'm not a big fan of the phrase blind ghetto when referring to devices and
applications for the blind. I wouldn't have been employed and independent
for the last 30 years without tools like the Braille 'n'
Speak, JAWS, a refreshible braille display, Home Page Reader and so on.
Furthermore, I think these devices, and the experiences blind people have
with them, do as much to promote accessibility in mainstream products as
their existence might seem to hinder.

Bottom line for me, is that I'm going to use all of the tools available to
me to get done what I need or want to do. I won't look down at my nose on
any blind person who feels differently though. To each his own.

RE: typing on the phone

2012-05-17 Thread Mike Cassidy
Hi listers,

This is fascinating: How many folk type on a standard keyboard with their
thumbs? I've just tried using my thumbs; I suppose with practice I could
improve, but it just doesn't feel right somehow. It's a good job there isn't
a correct way, and good that we can all choose our preferred method.

Regards,

Mike

Most sighted people use their thumbs to type even on touch screens. As to
what most blind people using touch screens use, that's anyone's guess. I
have used both styles. So I cancel out the statistics.

I'm not so sure it's how the majority of people use the touch screen
interface on their smart phones. It seems like more people use a
pointer finger. I don't have any statistical data though, so this is
 all just anecdotal.

BTW, I have been giving touch typing another chance, and although it's
early, I'm thinking I may end up preferring it over split tapping. I
know I've been a big advocate of split tapping, but all of the people
on this list talking about how great touch typing is caused me to give
it another chance, and I may be glad I did.

RE: a warning for anyone going to downgrade a5 devices

Hi listers,

Why should anyone need to downgrade to 5.0?

Hi list,
I just found the following out after downgrading my iPhone firmware.
When you restore the phone from backup, it can't restore from the latest
backup.
I presume this is because it doesn't like backups created with newer
firmware versions being used on older firmware.
Anyway, what this means is that when you go to restore, it will restore from
the last backup taken when you were running the downgraded firmware.
So in my case, the newest backup that was restored was from march 9th.
Luckily its not two bad for me, as I have only lost a few texts, and I don't
update my contacts and other things that much.
But for those who do, perhaps you don't want to think about downgrading
unless you can back up information elsewhere.
I guess if you downgrade, and then upgrade again to the latest firmware it
will be possible to restore from later backups, but I don't know.

RE: aching Index Finger!

2012-05-02 Thread Mike Cassidy
Hi,

You may be addressing the screen rather too heavily, with a tense finger;
try to let your hand relax a little more, and whilst I agree that the apps
are great and addictive, do give your poor finger a break every so often.

Hth,

Subject: aching Index Finger!

Dear iPhone Lovers!
I got my first iPhone 4S About 8 days ago and I am hopelessly addicted. The
apps are just brilliant! There is so much to learn, so much to do, to
explore and discover! I am hooked to it! Apart from loosing sleep, I have a
serious problem. The tip of my right index finger really hurts. I hold the
iphone in my left hand and use my right index finger for tapping, swiping
and using the keyboard. As a result my finger tip is really sore! I cant use
it anymore! Has anyone else had a similar problem? How do I overcome it? I
really want to get on with the iphone. How do I tell my sore, swollen index
finger to perform?
Help please!

RE: elusive OCR App!

Hi David,

No I would not be prepared to pay that amount, and I didn't buy KNF on
Symbian either smile.

Cheers,

Hello,

How many iOS device users are willing to pay the $1000 that KNFB Reader
charges for the KNFB Reader on the disappearing Nokia Symbion platform?

I personally get good enough results with Prizmo, and it was only $10. It
took me quite a while with lots of practice to become effective with Prizmo.

Surely there are enough iPHONE users who would gladly pay to have a
 working app on there iPhone.
With KNFB and TextSCOUT one could read entire books, magazines,
medical bottle labels, small text etc on the go with almost 98 percent
accuracy. None of the iPhone apps are even half as accurate!
Will the powers that be, prevail on these companies to come out with a
 version for the iPhone? Please!
If anyone knows of a working OCR app, please share the info.
 Many thanks!
