what app to use to cut and trim audio?

2016-04-02 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi iphone audio enthusiasts,

Which app do you use if you want to edit an audio file? I have wave recordings
that I edit on my computer, but I’d like to do it on the phone. Is there an IOS
app that lets me set a marker, play on, set the second marker and then delete
all audio between the markers? I had hokusai, but rewind is broken and with
long wave files, over 45 minutes, it crashes. Any app suggestions?

Kind regards,
Paul.

anyone experiencing these braille input problems on ios 9?

2015-11-17 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi listers,

Lately, the iphone of a friend who does not read English started acting
strangely while inputting braille. We did what we could, as described below.
Please think with us.. Here’s what happens.

Suddenly, and with no apparent reason so far discovered, when he wants to type
braille on the phone, the orientation seems to have changed 180 degrees. That
is, in landscape, he used to have the volume buttons facing the floor, resting
the phone on his pinkies and keeping it gripped with his thumbs, that is now
upside down. I.e.: The volume buttons now have to point to the ceiling and the
home button has to point to the right. Second problem now is, that when he
types characters that consist only of the 4 upper braille dots, so 1 2 4 and 5,
all is well. But any character where either dots 3 and or 6 are involved, the
inputted characters do not come out as typed. For instance, an m, as in Mike,
becomes an f. An n, as in november, becomes a g. I thought that he needed to
recalibrate his dots and so he did, but no change. This dot 3 6 problem gets
even more strange, because the letter k, as in kind, becomes a semi colon. In
his braille table, dots 2 and 3. That prooves that dot 3 is seen indeed. After
a reboot, the problem changes, and then, different characters come out. For
instance, then, he can no longer type the a, as in action. That becomes a
comma, dot 2.

Here’s what he tried to resolve this issue:
A sighted person came and looked, with an interesting outcome. It appears that,
even though we as braille users now need to hold the phone with the volume
buttons facing toward the ceiling, for a sighted person, the dots are still in
their original, correct orientation. I.e.: according to his son, dots 1 2 3 are
still near the home button, and 4 5 and 6 are toward the speaker end. Still,
hitting dot 1 makes the phone think it is dot 4. Recalibration does not help,
so we tried the following, with no change in input behaviour.

1. He unlocked the generic iphone screen orientation lock, using the control
center screen.
2. He unlocked his voiceover braille orientation lock, using a 3 finger swipe
up, while in landscape screen away braille mode.
3. He turned voiceover off and on.
4. He turned the phone off and back on.
5. We held the home button and the on off button for 12 seconds, the iphone
rebooted, but no help.

What did help, was that he restored his icloud backup a few days old. However,
the problem came back today.
He did not play any games, nor did anything provocative to the phone, such as
installing or removing apps, or changing any setting, hoping to catch the
problem if it returned. But it seems he just used the phone to answer and write
his email, sms and i messages.

So, finally we are turning to you listers. Any other suggestions on what might
be going on here are very welcome. We seem to be out of options. Please drop me
a line if you have the slightest idea what to try next.

Kind regards,
Paul.

ipad recorder app to record audio book

2015-06-11 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi listers,

I’m looking for an audio recorder app that les me record spoken audio on an
ipad. In particular, I’m looking for a specific punch-in function also found in
daisy software, and I hope someone can give me a pointer to such a recorder
app. What microphone and connection to use is a different matter. I’m hoping to
find a suitable recorder first.

In Daisy software on windows, here’s what’s possible.
A human reader reads a big chunk of text as audio into the computer’s hard
disk. When the reader makes a mistake, what I need is something to easily back
up in time and resume recording, starting the record just before the mistake.

In a daisy creation tool, Once a human reader makes a mistake, you can easily
rewind and go back through audio while you hear the audio playing, like
rewinding on a CD player, then you release the rewind button, so that the audio
plays again, and then at the exact point in time, just before the mistake
happened, the person operating the computer hits the record button, and the
reader resumes reading. Windows programs like sigtuna or lp studio pro can do
it, but so far, I have not come across any other tool that can do this, nor on
a computer, nor on an ipad. Still, I suppose there are many tools on the market
that make book reading and recording easy. Does any of you know if something
close exists for the iphone or ipad, where you can:
1. rewind through the audio and hear the audio playing as you rewind,
2. Hit record during playback, after which the audio after the play head is
discarded, and overwritten with the new material.

Very curious to find out.

Kind regards,
Paul.

wav to mp3 converter for ios?

2015-02-03 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi listers,

Do you know of an audio converter for the iphone at all? What I do daily, but
still on my mac and not yet on the phone, is take wave files, and convert those
into mp3. I’d like to do that on the phone. In apps like winzip, and also in
file browser, both on IOS, I have access to my dropbox, from which I can
download files, process them locally on the phone, and upload them back up to
dropbox. If I could then convert wave files into mp3, and then put them back in
dropbox, that would be awesome. Do you know of an app that can do this?

Regards,
Paul.

Re: Workflow App: Tedious to Use, but Worth It

2015-01-24 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Alex, Hall,

In a podcast, the workflow app was brought to my attention as well. There is
not much that I’d like to automate, but here’s one situation. Do you think the
workflow app is suitable for the following?
I have list recorder installed. This lets you record audio, organize it etc
etc. One repetitive task I’m doing daily again and again is, that I need to get
my recordings into dropbox. To do this, in list recorder, I need to hit share,
in a new dialog the audio functions button, then in a new dialog the open in
button, then in a new dialog the dropbox button. To begin with, is this
automatable using workflow to begin with?

Once list recorder starts transferring the recording over to the dropbox app,
dropbox itself opens. I then need to enter my password, then I need to hit save
in the upper right corner of the dropbox iphone app, and then the upload to the
dropbox.com http://dropbox.com/ site begins.

Next, I need to switch back to list recorder, do a back button, and then the
workflow is finished for this file. As you see, it takes a lot of tapping,
flicking, and switching apps. Is this a scenario that the workflow app can
automate? Very curious, because this process is tedious. Hope to hear back.

Regards,
Paul.

Yes, this app requires iOS8. Half of its power comes from the ability to add
your workflows to the share sheet, so you can do whatever you want when
sharing webpages, contacts, text, and more. This functionality is only
supported in iOS8 and above, so I'm not surprised they put this limitation on
the app. There might be a version for iOS7 and below, I don't know.

Hi, thanks for sharing info about this app. I have a question. Are the work
Flows created shareable? I am interested in this app but I would almost
prefer to use some already created to copy from so that I can learn. I learn
from copying and then tweaking, then eventually starting from scratch. :)

 Thanks :)

 Hi all,
You may have heard about the recently released Workflow app, which
provides automation for iOS. Here's the AppleVis page for it:

 http://www.applevis.com/apps/ios/productivity/workflow-powerful-automation-made-simple

I've spent a few days with it, and once I worked out how to use it, it
became possible to make workflows. There are VoiceOver bugs, but the
developers want to gather feedback and fix those. I'm hoping an update in
the next few months will make what is already a usable app into one that
is easy and fun, just as it is for sighted people. Even now, though, it is
 possible to make workflows.

The one I just completed is a vibrating timer. You give it a value (6 or
over) and it vibrates your phone ad intervals to let you know how much
time has passed. It vibrates twice when a quarter of your time is gone,
twice again halfway, twice again at three quarters, three times when you
have one minute, and finally four times when time is up. A friend on
Twitter gave me the idea, and he uses a similar setup to silently keep
track of the time during speeches, meetings, etc. So long as you know how
long you have, this can use vibrations to keep you on track.

What I just described sounds like an app, but it's not. It uses the
Workflow app to run, but it sits on my home screen and I can launch it,
type in my time and off it goes. Workflow allows you to automate saving or
downloading files, making or sharing calendar appointments or reminders,
emailing, and tons more. It's currently $3, and if this is the kind of
thing you're into, I suggest picking it up. The app is, as I said,
currently usable with VO if you work around the issues it has, but the
team is seeking feedback from VO users and hopes to improve things in the
near future. I'm not part of this app in any way, I just really like what
it can do and wanted to spread the word.

Re: need some major help with icloud, need to restore my phone

2014-09-25 Thread Paul Erkens
Hey Jed,

I just restored mine 2 days ago. Of course, before you go ahead and take the
plunge, it's always best to backup using itunes. Having said that:

1. Wipe your phone back to factory settings. To do this, settings, general,
reset, and then choose to wipe all content and media. Confirm a couple of
times, enter your Apple ID when prompted in case you had find my iphone turned
on, and the phone reboots. Let it do its thing. It takes a few minutes. I just
had it on the table while I made coffee. Then when I came back, the phone was
off. You can verify that by flicking the mute switch. If it vibrates, the phone
is on. If not, it's off. It should be off before you continue.

2. Boot. Hold the power switch a few seconds and then let go, just as if you
turn it on the usual way. Now though, you will land in the installation
screens. Just enable voiceover with a triple click home, and it will talk. You
will hear several languages pass by. Just double tap, and you can select your
region etc. You don't need to wait untill American English comes by again. Just
double tap, when voice after voice welcomes you to the installation in several
languages in sequence. If you haven't heard this before, just listen and
explore for a while. It's fun if you've never seen it. You will then be asked
to turn on or off location services, log in to your wifi etc.

3. When asked, don't install as a new iphone. Instead, choose to restore from
an icloud backup. You can then double tap the most recent icloud backup, and
restore will start.

4. First, your settings will be restored. This takes some 5 to ten minutes or
so. When complete, the phone reboots, but restore is not done yet.

5. Don't do anything yet. VoiceOver comes on by itself, and it will look like
you have your phone back. All icons and folders on the home screens are in
place etc. This is not the case though, because icloud is still pumping data
into your phone. You cannot exactly track progress, although there is a work
around. The process took me 3 hours here, and then all is good to go.
Done.

3 Notes on the above.
1. I made the mistake of trying to open and run apps, while the restore was
still in progress. Don't do that. You may mess things up. Worse, also do not
try to download apps from the app store, as long as they have not restored from
your icloud backup yet. I did that, and I had to start over because of data
loss.

2. To check progress during restore, here is what you can do. Under settings,
icloud, backup, the bottom line on the screen says that icloud is still
restoring data. If this disappears, restore is complete.
Another way to check progress, is settings, general, usage. You will see the
amount of free space go down gradually.

3. The restore process sometimes got stuck on my phone. If after 20 minutes the
free space no longer decreases, and icloud still says data is being restored,
then you can safely reboot your phone, and then the process will pick up from
where it left off. Beautiful.

Hth,
Paul.

As a side note, whilst iCloud backup is handy, this is exactly why I
choose to do local backups before I restore. Sure it's nice to know

iphone game: blindfold racer

2014-06-19 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi folks,

Just in case you did not yet come across it: blindfold racer is a very nice
audio game. It's free. Take a look in the IOS app store if you're curious. I
discovered it this weekend. Applevis did a podcast on it, and interviewed its
developer. Applevis podcast extra, number 21. But download and play the game
first. That will make the podcast even more interesting. Just wanted to share
it.

Best,
Paul.

facebook 11.0 accessibility?

Hi listers,

For those of you who updated to the latest version of the IOS facebook app, and
also to the latest facebook messenger app: how is accessibility? Is the
voiceover experience better, worse or just about the same? I'm just starting to
get the hang of facebook and I really like it so far. It's accessibility
history was not always good from our point of view so I'm curious. Should I
update?

Kind regards,

facetime audio and voiceover not speaking

2013-09-26 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi all,

Has any one run into the following: once an audio facetime call has been
established, VoiceOver goes silent. I can flick and explore what I want, but I
hear no VO sounds, and VO does not speak as long as the audio facetime call is
still going on. Does any of you know what is happening, and is it possible to
have VO speak normally, as it does in a facetime video call?

Vokul synthesizer

There is an iphone app called Vokul. Spelled v o k u l. This app lets you

and do you happen to know of other apps using it?

1password for iphone, password copy using VoiceOver

2013-03-07 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear listers,

Today I found out something about 1password that I thought I'd share. Question
was: when using 1password on the iphone, how do I copy a certain password over
to another application? Say you're inside the passwords tab sheet, or section.
There you have a list of assigned text labels that indicate what each password
is for, and if you double tap one using VoiceOver, you land in a new screen
where you can see the password in question. Below it is the toggle to require
master password authentication but instead, look at the password itself.
VoiceOver will just read it, meaning it is not currently selected.

Now, if you double tap the password, it becomes selected, and if you flick left
or right, nothing appears to have changed on the screen. However, a sighted
person told me that if you now touch just above the password, you'll find
something that says: copy, menu item. You won't find this menu item using flick
gestures.

From here on it's easy: just double tap copy, and the password will go to the
ios clipboard. Close 1password, go into another app and there into a text
field, have the rotor on edit, flick down till you find paste, double tap it
and you're done. Nice to know.

A question in this regard is, what it means that we hear VoiceOver say: menu
item. Could this imply that there are more items on the screen than just the
word copy? I don't find any other items, and flicking while the VoiceOver
cursor is on the copy menu item doesn't help me further. So what do you do when
you encounter such a menu item? Can we reach other options from there? I tried
the rotor to find a clue, but no luck, so I'm interested to hear if you know
this.

Paul.

ios garageband recording issues

2013-02-22 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear listers,

When recording in garageband for ios, there's something I encounter that I
don't know how to work right. If you use ios garageband regularly, you may know
the answers. It's about undoing recordings and merging new material in.

When hitting the record button, garageband recoards what you are doing for 8
measures. It's 8 measures, because the default length for a region is 8 bars.
After that, recording stops, the playhead wraps to the beginning of the region,
and you can continue playing, but it won't be recorded any longer.

This situation is not what you want, when attempting to get a track done.
Because once you have recorded something, 4 out of 5 times, you will want to
redo it, because playing on glass is not easy. How do I undo what I just
recorded?

Second, once I know how to undo my recording of the latest region, and then re
recoard it till it's right, can I also merge newly played material with
something already recorded in the region in the current track? It seems that
every time I record the same region on the same track, my new keystrokes will
replace what's already there, while I want to play on top of the existing
region.

Here's what I'm trying to do. I have chords needing a left and a right hand. So
I'm not using the automated stuff here, because the chords I have are not the
straight forward ones that garageband has to offer. Therefore, I would like to
first record the right hand, and do that over and over till I get it exactly
right, and then on top of that, record the left hand, blending the left hand
with what was already recorded in the track for the right hand. I need to
merge, because on the iphone you only have 9 hole notes on the glass keyboard,
while the range I want to play spans multiple octaves.

How do you folks handle this situation? Does garageband for the mac handle
recording in the same way the ios garageband does it, like I described above?
If so, how do you go about recording, undoing, re recording a take, and then
merging in new stuff till the region contains what you want?

I'm very curious for your answers, because I've been playing and trying for
some ten days now, hoping the coin would drop in at any moment, but I have not
succeeded so far. Yet it must be possible to create decent things in ios.
Hoping to hear back.

Kind regards,
Paul.

ios garageband and recording

2013-02-21 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear listers,

When recording in garageband for ios, there's something I encounter that I
don't know how to work right. When hitting the record button, garageband
recoards what you are doing for 8 measures. It's 8 measures, because the
default length for a region is 8 bars. After that, recording stops, the
playhead wraps to the beginning of the region, and you can continue playing,
but it won't be recorded any longer.

This situation is not what you want, when attempting to get a track done.
Because once you have recorded something, 4 out of 5 times, you will want to
redo it, because playing on glass is not easy. How do I undo what I just
recorded?

Second, once I know how to undo my recording of the latest region, and then re
recoard it till it's right, can I also merge newly played material with
something already recorded in the region? It seems that every time I record the
same region on the same track, my new keystrokes will replace what's already
there, while I want to play on top of the existing region.

I need to

ios garageband and midi note editor accessibility

2013-02-21 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear ios garageband users,

Just wanted to let you know that the note editor, as far as I'm aware, is not
accessible using VoiceOver, as of now. I wrote Apple accessibility about it,
with steps to get into the note editor and explaining the inaccessible part,
and they replied they will look into it. From the mail I received, it looks
like they confirm there is a problem in the midi note editor in ios garageband,
but of course they cannot promise when or if at all, it's going to be fixed.
I'm writing this so you know that spending time trying to get the midi note
editor to work is not going to give you useful results, but now that Apple is
aware of it, we may hope it will change sooner or later.

ios 6 calendar bug, no events?

2012-09-22 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear listers,

Can any of yu confirm the following? When moving your finger across the month
view of calendar on ios 6, then all my days seem to be empty. However, I'm sure
I put in all kinds of events. When I then tap a day that says no events, and I
then look in the bottom part of the screen, all my events for that day do show
up, even though the month view announces that day as empty. Can you reproduce
this? I'd rather not bug apple accessibility, unless I'm sure I found a real
bug, and not something I don't understand. Please try it if you use the ios 6
calendar. I'm interested to hear your findings.

Hope this is interesting to some of you.

do not disturb, what is the entire story?

2012-09-22 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear listers,

Since ios 6, we can now keep calls from coming through, if we need that. But
how do I handle the situation where I want to use my alarm on the phone to wake
me up? While I'm sleeping, I only want the alarm to sound, and no calls at all,
no app sounds at all, other than my wake up alarm. Is this possible?

Setting the mute switch to off, will that also surpress the alarm? Does do not
disturb mode have anything to do with this? What is the complete story here? I
don't quite understand this yet, and to wake up, I stil use my old Nokia. I'd
like to use my iphone for it though. Any additional explanation is appreciated.

2012-09-22 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Scott,

Nice tip. I switched from month view to day view and back, and suddenly, the
issues seems to be solved. Good idea. I think we need to look at this further,
to see if it comes back at all, and if there's a fix that always does it. I'll
post here if I know more. I'd rather tell Apple the whole story so they can
reproduce and hopefully fix it more easily.

Best,
Paul.

in ios6, the hq voice is gone

2012-09-20 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear listers,

Is any of you experiencing the following? After updating to ios 6, I now have
the compact voice talking from voiceover. Is this indeed what Apple wants? Did
they do away with the premium voices, the high quality ones, or are they still
there and am I missing something? In settings, general, accessibility,
voiceover, there used to be an option to either use the compact or the premium,
way better sounding voice for voiceover output, but this option is no longer
there, and I now have the compact voice instead of the nice one. Is that your
experience as well?
Anything we can do about it?

Passwords

2012-08-06 Thread Paul Erkens
 Hi Jenny,

I'm starting to use 1password for iphone. It can do lots of good things for
you, but best of all it has a secret notes section. To open 1password, you
need a 4-digit unlock code. To further open the secure notes inside
1password, you need your 1password master key. So even if someone grabs your
phone, they won't get to your secret notes. 1Password is not free, it's
around 10 dollars as far as I remember.

1password for ios

2012-08-04 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear listers,

I downloaded 1password on to my iphone but I'm sort of stuck. If you're using
it, could you please answer a few of my questions, if you know an answer?

1. When inside the add tab, I have a choice to enter several types of log
ins. What is the difference between a login and an account?

2. When double tapping add login, the screen is not very clear to me. It
looks like this. I'll say click when a new line begins.
Add login, heading, click.
Regular login, click.
Popular login templates, heading.
Selected, add, tab, one of two.
Settings, tab, two of two.

That's it. The only tappable item is regular login.
If popular login templates is indeed a heading, I would think there are more
choices below it. But there are none. Not only do I not find them while I flick
across, but also when exploring the iphone screen by touch. Below those
templates, there's nothing. Double tapping the heading named popular login
templates itself, does nothing. What am I missing here?

I'm just getting started with 1password, and from google, I got a message from
way back on this list, saying 1password is accessible. I'm curious to find out
other things about this ios app, but I'll leave it at this for this message.
Interested to hear back from anyone.

Paul.

Re: Simplest Way to Convert ITunes music files to mp3or for use on the Victor Reader Stream

Hi listers,

Once you have a bunch of songs converted, all songs of course show up twice in
the itunes library. One AAC, and one mp3 version. What is the quickest way to
get rid of all AAC files, or all mp3 files, in one go? Now, I need to find each
song, hit command i for info, check if it's the right file I want to delete,
i.e. mp3 or AAC, close the info window and then delete that one song from my
itunes library. Imagine I convert an album with over 30 tracks, that's a lot of
steps to delete all old files that are no longer needed after conversion. Any
idea on how to do this more efficiently?
