I have had mine for over six months and I am very pleased with it. Size makes
it very easy to stick into my back pocket. The charging on wireless charger
works fine for me with no issues. The battery is, as has already been said,
Soso, but not a dealbreaker for me, really like mine.

RE: Facebook today

I’ve learned to view anything like that as spam. I’ve been getting one that
begins, “Someone has tried to log into your account.” I was pretty sure it was
a spam, and then, when it came several times, knew for sure1 On one hand, these
guys are getting sneakier; on the other, I sometimes go, “They must think we’re
stupid! They’re re-attempting a false message we’ve already responded to by
deleting, and that we’ve received many, many times without falling for.”

I got one for my first touch screen smart phone, the iPhone 4S. Although I
don't think it was absolutely necessary, I did find it useful. I never got one
for my Samsung S7, and I haven't been tempted to get one for my iPhone 11, but

We bought a spin bike last fall and decided to get just a basic model without
any connectivity because both my wife and I have Apple Watches which we use
with the indoor cycle workout to track time, heart rate and calories.
Yes, some bikes keep track of a virtual distance, but who really cares if the
bike says you biked 6 miles or 10 miles, I am after a good workout and for that
my heart rate and calories burned are more important. I don't know how much you
want to spend, but you are better off investing in a good quality bike without
a fancy controller which may or may not give you what you want, if anything
spend that money on an Apple Watch which you can use for any type of workout
not just your bike.

Indeed, it does! since I'm sort-of used to it, think I'll stick with my
current model. Now, if I could just figure out how to get back to the
Settings menu when I need it... I am still a newbee, just starting to tackle
common tasks--tech dinosaur that I am, having had it for almost 2 years!
Unfortunately, don't do well with the audio training materials, and the
Braille materials I know of aren't always specific enough or written in a
helpful order...

Hello,

I’ve been watching the conversation aboutthe new SE with interest. I was
curious and looked on E Bay at iPhone 8 prices and they are quite affordable.

For the sake of this conversation let’s assume that the prices are close, which
is the more updated phone? The 8 or new SE?

Thanks for your hellp,

And if you don't answer the calls that are unknown to you, as we do as well
as Anthony, after a certain amount of time the strange calls do slow down.
Granted some of them are replaced with other calls with different numbers
but we continue to ignore them. And if there's an important call amoungst
those unknown phone numbers calling we won't miss anything since we listen
to our voice mail and we can return those important calls.

Yes, just don’t answer them.
Everybody seems to be worried about the calls and if you just ignored them
you’ll be fine. If a number is not in my contacts I won’t answer it.
If it’s a number that I don’t recognize from a doctor or somebody and it’s
important they will even message.
Take care
God bless

It's actually native to the clock feature of the iPhone. There is a
tab along the bottom of the screen called bedtime.

Hi all,

I've enjoyed the gentle awakeing I've been getting with the bedtime
alarm clock--I sort of "slide" awake now instead of being jarred,
which is comparatively pleasant.

I know that if I hit one of the volume buttons, the alarm will go into
snooze mode, and it'll turn right off if I hit the home button. What I
can't quite figure is how to turn off the alarm while it's snoozing.
Does this make sense? So, if the alarm goes off at 6:00, I hit snooze,
and am ready to actually get out of bed at 6:05. The alarm will go off
again at 6:10, but I'd prefer to just turn it off when I actually ge
tout of bed instea dof waiting. Anyway, I'm assuming there's a quick

Thanks in advance,

NFB article on Braille training--was, RE: Braille for seniors?!

2019-06-29 Thread Sandra Streeter

Methodology for Teaching Braille to Adults
by Emily Wharton and Ryan Strunk
>From the Editor: Emily Wharton and Ryan Strunk are both employed by BLIND,
>Incorporated, the NFB training center located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Emily
>is the Braille instructor, Ryan the technology instructor. Both are dedicated
>to helping blind people graduate as literate adults.
For a long time complaints about materials for teaching Braille to adults have
been a topic of discussion between blind adults and their instructors. Emily
has tried to address this by creating a new system for teaching Braille. The
system includes a textbook, but it is far more than just another book on
teaching Braille. Because using new technology is a part of this system, Ryan's
role has been critical.
For the benefit of those who are not familiar with Braille, here are some
pointers and definitions. Words in Braille can be written letter by letter, as
they are in print, or can be represented by contractions and short forms. Some
commonly used words are represented by dot combinations that are not already
used for numbers, letters, or punctuation. Words such as with, of, for, were,
and was are represented in this way and are called contractions. A short form
is a letter standing by itself that represents a word. The letter b standing by
itself is the word but, the letter c the word can, and the letter d the word
do. Every letter represents a word. If a letter standing by itself is not
intended to be a word, it is preceded by a special symbol called a letter sign.
This makes it possible to represent a list in which a is the first item, b the
second, and z the twenty-sixth.
A peg slate is used to introduce students to Braille. Pegs are inserted into
the holes of a board to make the shapes of the Braille symbols.
Here is the written version of the remarks presented by Ryan and Emily at the
Braille Symposium on September 28, 2012:
Introduction
When I began teaching Braille in the adult comprehensive program at BLIND,
Incorporated, in March 2009, our students had a generally negative attitude
about Braille and were performing below expectation in Braille reading and
writing proficiency. They complained that Braille was hard and not useful for
them in their daily lives. These adults complained of feeling like a first
grader and acted as if using a slate and stylus was a punishment. They were
also taking five months or more to learn the Braille code and budgeting very
little time to work on building speed and fluency before they completed the
program. In short, we had a bad Braillitude going on, and we needed to turn it
around.
Reflecting on my own experiences as an adult Braille learner and consulting
with other Braille enthusiasts who learned Braille as a teenager or adult, I
[Emily] began work on a new method for teaching Braille to adults. In order to
address the problems I was seeing, I needed for this method to incorporate the
following elements: decrease stress and increase enjoyment, make studying
outside class easy, show how useful Braille is, teach to the student's learning
style, focus on "sight words" and context to increase fluency, leverage the
power and promise of technology, foster mastery motivation, and customize
material to the student's interests.
I was teaching Braille using this method by the fall of 2009. I completed the
first version of the Code Master textbook around this time, and we have been
using it as our primary teaching text since then. In January of 2010 we
combined Braille and technology into a single class called Communications, and
I instructed my colleague Ryan Strunk on implementing this method. Ryan and I
have been using it since with all Braille learners in the general adult
comprehensive program.
Overview of the Method
The Code Master Adult Learning System consists of five components: 1) the Code
Master Adult Learning System manual, 2) a three-ring binder for customized
notes, 3) an audio CD or MP3 files for textbook tutorial, 4) instructions for
customizing the curriculum for students, and 5) methods for incorporating
technology into Braille instruction. The following sections explain these
components more completely.
When students begin the program knowing no Braille, they start by learning the
dot configurations. They work on this orally and using a peg slate. On day one
they learn the first ten letters. Students are given textbooks, peg slates, and
audio materials. They receive instruction in reading technique and are
encouraged to work on reading the textbook and touch pages outside class, but
the method and overall class structure are discussed so that students
understand the process and know that reading technique will not become a focus
of lessons until later in the course. Generally, within the first two weeks
students know the alphabet, numbers, basic punctuation,

RE: Braille for seniors?!

2019-06-29 Thread Sandra Streeter
Absolutely! One of the people I had the privilege of teaching was around 70.
There are secrets to the code, really logical keys, that make it easier to
learn than is commonly believed. Unless you have severe physical or cognitive
issues that would preclude being able to use it (advanced diabetes with lack of
finger sensitivity, dementia. E.g.), it's worth giving it the old college try.
I would check with the NFB, since they are doing some innovative things to help
folks learn it; also, the Hadley Institute courses are great, self-paced
options. I tried to paste their YouTube link in, but for whatever reason,
Outlook wouldn't let it be inserted as a link, so you'll have to type it into
your browser--sorry. HTH, anyway.

Is it possible for someone over the age of 65 to learn braille?
Exploring the accessibility features of my new iPhone, I chanced upon the
Braille entry option on the rotor. I tried using it and was amazed at how
quickly I could start typing in Braille! It was also fun and fast!
Therefore my question-can someone over the age of 65 learn to read Braille?
I know that with practice I could learn to type in Braille.
But reading braille?? Learning to interpret those raised dots into alphabets at
a reasonably fast speed! Is it possible for me?
If yes, how should I go about doing it?
Should I be buying a refreshable Braille display?
Help, guidance or any indication about this would be wonderful!
K

P.S. I am actually many years over 65! But ladies are not supposed to give
their age :-)

Good Morning,

Could someone post an update as to how accessible Hulu is currently? We have
become quite fond of NetFlix and reading and don't watch much tv any more.
Spectrum rates are going up again here in NY. If we can get similar programming
with Hulu for what little we watch, we have no problem parting company with
Spectrum.

I am wondering about search features and the labling of buttons etc.

Thank you in advance,

There’s a gesture I simply cannot remember. How can I get to the top of a
screen or email or document? Sometime my finger lands me in the middle or
bottom but I can’t get back to the top or beginning.

I’d love to learn or relearn the VoiceOver gestures.

Thank you!

Tom

I also don't like the idea of a big, honkin' screen. I am small-handed, and
appreciate it when I don't have to reach far for items; I know you can do
that "reachability" thing, but it's also about just not wanting a wider
distance from edge to edge. Plus, I don't want to have to find more real
estate within whatever carry-bag I happen to have, just to accommodate a
larger screen. If I were low-vision and not total, that would probably be
different.

I see a couple of things about not having a home button. The first one is
the touch ID is simply more convenient for me as a blind person then Face
ID. I don’t have to be looking at the phone. I can have it on my desk even
under my desk on my keyboard shelf, and activate it with touch ID. I could
have it in my pocket and activate it with touch ID. Also, if you happen to
be one of those blind people who can’t use the attention feature of the Face
ID, Face ID is massively not secure. If somebody takes your iPhone, all they
have to do is put it in front of your face, and it opens, and they have
access to everything. And that can be a problem in certain settings. If you’re
lucky enough to be able to use the attention setting, which all ighted
people do, that’s not a big deal. But in certain settings, it’s everything
from a nuisance to a serious risk. And finally, there is the matter of the
gestures. Yes, I’m sure they are doable. Blind people are doing them. But it’s
just so unnecessary. It’s just a shame that they couldn’t keep a phone
around with the home button and touch ID. But everybody has to have giant
displays so they can watch movies on their phones I guess. It certainly is
the wave of the future for Apple. So if you’re going to stick with Apple
products, guess you have to get on the bandwagon. I certainly would not buy
either of the S models. If I get an ex this year, it’s going to be the R. I
just don’t see enough bang for the buck to splurge on those other things. If
I traveled a lot, the dual sim feature is interesting. And the stereo
recording would be good for some people. But it’s not worth at least $250
more over the cost of the entry-level r model.

Re: Send Sound for Text Messages

2018-08-17 Thread Sandra Streeter
Try phonezoo.com first--they're free, if they have the one you want. I think
they send it as a text, then you have to somehow move it into where it can
become a phone ring. It's been a long time since I've done it, so hopefully,
someone can consult with you on the particulars.

Re: Bluetooth keyboard recommendation

2018-08-14 Thread Sandra Streeter
Just starting to learn an iPhone 8. Would a keyboard help in situations
where you're presented with an itemized menu that you have to press a
certain # for whatever item? I don't mind using the regular onboard
keyboard, but am thinking ahead to whenever I have to deal with the menu
situation.

Susie, I love the three thumbs up. It made me laugh!
I'm glad you're a fan of it too.

I bought a Logitech 380 for my phone and really like it. I paid $35 at
Amazon (I don't have Prime.) I echo everything Travis says. The missing
Numpad doesn't bother me, and the touch isn't an issue. If I want to take it
with me, it slips into my bag with nary a complaint. Navigating on the phone
with this keyboard is really slick. I'd give it three thumbs up.

Travis, thank you for this complete review about the logitech 380 keyboard.
It sounds like a great keyboard. I'm not sure, but I think the keyboard you
have has been recomended here on the list before, besides some other
logitech key boards, such as the 780, and I think there was 480, and a few
other model numbers. We're interested in seeing these keyboards since they
all seem like good keyboards. The price for your 380 is really great, just
$7 more than the black webb one. The exchange of these keyboards is really
great coming from one another's experiences.

I've been using the Logitech 380 keyboard for a couple of days now.

With prime, they're about $27. Without prime, you'll need a third party
seller, prices starting around $20 for refurbished and $33 for new at time
of writing.

Cons: Very few that I've found, so will deal with these first as they are
preference only.
No separate number pad. The numbers are on the row above the qwerty line.
There are function keys. Positive is that most work. The negative for those
wanting to use the keyboard to brighten and darken the screen won't be able
to do so with f1 or f2. F1, f2, f3 are reserved for the three channels
allowed by the keyboard, so three devices can be paired.
For those used to harder to push square keys, you'll be out of luck. Instead
of squares and rectangles for longer keys, you now will have round and oval
shaped keys, and a much more sensitive touch, so no slamming the keys in
anger. Doing so on this lightweight keyboard could possibly break something.

The positives. So far, everything else.
The touch is light.
Responsiveness is nearly immediate. The negative being that it is easily
possible to press a double letter while getting used to the lightness of
touch.
There is an on/off switch on the side.
So far, the AAA battery is lasting.
Thickness is about half of that of a regular keyboard. So is the weight.
Length is probably three inches shorter than a regular keyboard since there
is no numpad. Height is probably one inch less than a regular keyboard.

So far, well worth the purchase.

Arlene, I couldn't find the Black webb keyboards online, and a trip to
Walmart was not in our immediate future, so my wife ordered this one on her
Prime account instead. So far, very happy with it, and it's not $100. :)

I think if the keys were round and about the size of my fingers that are
small, if the keys were even just slightly bigger than my finger or about
the same size, to me, it sounds like it would be confortable to type on.

I think I'd prefer round, because there would, by necessity be a little more
separation of keys. It's all a matter of taste, said the old man who kissed
the cow.
