Subject: Portable keyboard for ipad mini 6th gen

All:

I picked up an iPad mini 6th gen 256GB tablet for myself on Thanksgiving. Merry
Christmas to me! LOL.

I’m loving it.

Since a 14 cell Braille display is currently not in my budget, can anyone
recommend a portable keyboard that I can use with my new iPad? Something I can
carry for travel as well.

RE: Be My AI and what it may teach us?

2023-11-14 Thread realman02 via VIPhone
My point -- and then I'll let this go and not comment -- is that I do not want
a machine large language model providing me with subjective opinions about
people, their expressions, etc. I think that should be reserved for human to
human interaction. Who knows if the description is accurate? Who knows what
criteria the AI program used to generate its description?

Only, that is not a complete description. Like it or not, all of us have facial
expression, and that is a part of what we look like. Of course, expressions
vary, but they are a part of a person's face.

This is how I would rephrase the description:

>partially closed.
His nose is prominent and he has full lips. He is wearing a dark-colored polo

I would agree with Sieghard, but I suspect what Mary and others are getting at
is not what they choose to use or not but what others are using and how that
might affect how they interpret the world based on those AI generated
descriptions. As Mary says though, anytime you're getting a description from
another source, even if it's a sighted person, it isn't going to be free of
interpretation.

Reminds me of a friend of mine in college who was helping me pick out a
greeting card. She told me she would just describe the card to me and wouldn't
be subjective at all. Later on she described a card as "yucky yellow." We had a
good laugh over that, but I didn't get that card.

For those who don't want any kind of interpretation of a description coming
from an AI, I wonder what they would consider an acceptable description. I'd
find it interesting if someone took a response from Be My AI and then
sterilized it into what they would find acceptable. I'm guessing that the more
sterile descriptions wouldn't be nearly as popular and most people find the
interpretation of the image as one of the more interesting parts of the
description.

I think the other thing that people need to keep in mind, it’s just because an
artificial intelligence says that’s your expression doesn’t mean you have to
believe it. You can ask follow-up questions. The beauty is we have deductive
reasoning and can make that determination with further input. Also, if you’re
totally blind, every input of an expression is going to be through hearsay
whether it’s artificial intelligence or another human being. You’re still going
by their interpretation of the expression, not your own judgment. Every single
thing that is described to us is through someone else’s eyes or interpretation
of what they visually perceive it to be. That means, every description is
suspect since no two people are going to take away the same thing. That’s why
it doesn’t really bother me if the artificial intelligence Gives an answer that
isn’t maybe how I’m feeling or etc. because I can use my reasoning to figure it
out.

This description is a great example of what really disturbs me about these AI
descriptions of images.
"His eyes are partially closed, and he has a somewhat stern or serious
expression on his face."

I'm not even mentioning the "appears to be of a comfortable fit " about the
shirt.
Chat GPT or Open AI or whatever are comparing the picture to images of
thousands of other images it has in its data base and making a "judgement"
based on that comparison.
A machine, based on this comparison, is telling you have a stern or serious
expression. That's it. It in no way resembles a sighted person looking in a
mirror.
I wish with all my heart we could get Be My Eyes to ban these subjective
so-called judgements.

RE: taking an app out of a created folder

2023-11-01 Thread realman02 via VIPhone
Here is how you take an app out of a folder on the iPhone.

1. Go into the folder with the apps.
2. 2. Find the app you want to move out of the folder.
3. 3. Double tap on the app and hold your finger on the app for five
seconds.
4.

While holding your finger down, Slide your finger to the left or right to move
the app out of the folder .You'll hear VoiceOver say something like the app is
outside of the folder.

5. You may also hear VoiceOver say that you're moving from page to page.
If you remove your finger you can then move the app wherever you want on your
home screen. The app is now out of your folder. Thanks to Kathy Brandt for
telling me how to do this. Way to go, Kathy!

3. Find the icon you want to move and flick down and double tap on drag
4. Now close the folder (I do this by sliding up from the bottom of the
screen to go back to the home page) and find where you want to drop the icon
5. Flick down to drop before or after and double tap

The app should now be on the home page and not in the folder. If there were
only two apps in the folder then the folder will disappear and the other app
will also be on a home page.

A few months ago, I tried moving an app and, despite my setting the app to drop
after another app, good old IOS combined the two apps into one folder. Now I
can’t figure out how to get the app out of that folder. When I go into edit, it
asks if I want to move the app within the folder. How do I get the app out of
the folder?

taking an app out of a created folder

2023-11-01 Thread realman02 via VIPhone
A few months ago, I tried moving an app and, despite my setting the app to drop
after another app, good old IOS combined the two apps into one folder. Now I
can’t figure out how to get the app out of that folder. When I go into edit, it
asks if I want to move the app within the folder. How do I get the app out of
the folder?

Thanks

How do I lock the orientation of my Ipad?

2023-10-21 Thread realman02 via VIPhone
Somehow the orientation (portrait) of my Ipad got unlocked and shifts from
Portrait to Landscape. I looked on google and saw info purportedly telling me
how to fix this by going into Control Center and locking the orientation. I've
gone into Control Center under Settings on both my Ipad and Iphone and I don't
see any such setting to change. How do I lock my Ipad in portrait mode?
Thanks John

Notifications are Useless -- or so it seems

2023-10-14 Thread realman02 via VIPhone
VO often tells me "you have xxx notifications" when I'm on the lock screen.
It will tell me where they are coming from - phone, Uber, etc, but doesn't
tell me what the actual notifications. Just now I double-tapped on a phone
notification and my phone called the number. This is useless information. Do
I have something set wrong, or is this really how things are supposed to
work? I have an iPhone 14 pro with the latest updates.

Thanks John

Subject: Another example of Be My AI

Here is one more example of a Be My AI description. I took the picture first
with my Camera app as I wanted to send this to a few sighted friends and
include the picture along with the description Be My AI provided so I took the
picture, then tapped on "Share" and selected "Describe with Be My AI".

The picture is taken from our bedroom window through the window glass. What you
see is our backyard which has some lawn as well as a few still smaller fruit
trees on the right and on the left some raised garden beds where we grow stuff
like beans, peas, herbs, cauliflower, broccoli, strawbeerries, onions, kolrabi
and so on. Of course it is fall in northern BC so all of this is mostly done
except that we still have some parsly, peppermint, jives and so on in one
raised bed, but it's off the picture. We also have an 8 by 8 foot greenhouse
for tomatos, cucumbers, early and late lettuce and some herbs like basil,
rosemary and so on which in our climate do better there than outdoors. Anyways,
here is the description:

The picture shows a serene outdoor setting. In the foreground, there is a lush
green lawn with a few scattered leaves. On the right side are some small trees
and on the left side, there is a small greenhouse with a glass structure and a
wooden base. Next to the greenhouse, there is a raised wooden garden bed with
some plants. A green hose is snaking across the lawn.

In the middle ground, there is a wooden fence with a black tarp draped over
part of it. Behind the fence, there is a large, freshly tilled field that
appears to be ready for planting.

In the background, there are tall trees with leaves in shades of gold and
green, indicating that it might be autumn. Beyond the trees, there are a few
houses and structures. In the far distance, there are majestic mountains
partially obscured by clouds. The sky above is overcast.

One thing I would possibly question a little is the "lush" description in
connection with our lawn. It is relatively green, but we had a super dry summer
and due to water restrictions were not allowed to water the lawn so while now
we have more moisture at night due to humidity and temperatures in the mid
30's, it's green, but I wouldn't call it "lush".

The description of the greenhouse is spot on, it is probably 50 feet away and
the "wpooden base" did surprise me, but it is indeed built on 16-inch tall and
6 inch wide fir timbers which I did to make it not so low. What the description
didn't get is that it is sitting on a concrete pad.

The fence description is also correct, in fact I took one other picture before
this one and in that it even said that the fence appears to be new which is not
incorrect since it's made from cedar and I build it just last fall so the wood
still looks fairly fresh.

The bit about the tarp is also right on. I am still working on building a
double gate for the 10 foot opening in the fence and for now I put a long board
across the two posts and hung a tarp over that because behind our property is
an approx. 3 or 4 acre open field which belongs to a school just a few houses
down from us and they are currently in the process of establishing a soccre
field and green area around that.

Because of that large open space and the fact that due to the drought there are
hardly any berries in the mountains, we have a lot of black bears in town this
fall and while we just picked the rest of our apples yesterday, I don't want
them in the yard if possible. The tarp russles and crackles a bit when it's
windy which seems to work quite well to keep them out. Just in the past 3 days
our Ring doorbell camera captured one nice black bear walking across our
driveway in front of the house and a couple days earlier a Mama Bear with 3
babies in toe walked by around 3 during the night.

Anyways, the rest of the description is also correct, around that field in the
back ar tall poppler trees which are turning yellow now and you can see some
houses a couple of hundred metres away and then looking further across the
valley Hudson Bay Mountain which is a little over 8000 feet tall rises up and
by now it's got a bit of fresh snow on the top, but Be My AI didn't pick that
up because it may very well be obscured by the clouds today. There is probably
also some smoke from a nearby forest fire because it definitely smells smoky
out today.

RE: Question about when I upgrade

2023-09-24 Thread realman02 via VIPhone
My suggestion is to get rid of the apps you no longer want or need, download
the apps you want, do a backup of your old phone and then upgrade using what's
backed up. Ideally doing an encrypted backup using Itunes lets you move more
things like passwords, etc, to your new device.

This is just my opinion, but I think it's always best to start from scratch
This way you don't propagate those mistakes you made on your previous device.
That being said, I always bring everything forward in iCloud. I'm just too lazy
to go through all of those settings I've tweaked. Note on Windows, I do always
start from scratch.

Subject: Question about when I upgrade

Hi,
Does anyone have thoughts on what is best when upgrading, whether one should
start fresh with the phone or whether one should always get what was saved from
iCloud. I'll be upgrading from the 12 basic to the
15 pro, and I noticed that when I upgraded from the XR to the 12, I simply got
what was saved on iCloud. It was the same settings and same layout as before,
and somewhere along that time I got apps that weren't being used anymore or
that I had downloaded and didn't need. I guess the question is whether I should
start from scratch on this new phone and download the apps I want or whether I
should get what I want from icloud and keep everything I've had for years in
the way of older apps and layout and such.

RE: Be my eyes new service

2023-09-21 Thread realman02 via VIPhone
The problem is that a non-human thing, Open AI, is making subjective judgments
about people and objects in pictures and there's no way to query the AI why it
came up with that judgement. Plus I want to make my won judgements and don't
want to be influenced by a machine. All I'm saying is that we need to think
carefully whether we really want Be My Eyes to be giving us these judgments or
having them reserved for human interactions.
I realize this is veering off topic so won't be replying anymore.
Happy listing!

I asked if this app could also describe photos on my iPhone and followed the
directions given. I am absolutely amazed. Below is a description of the day. My
current guide dog met his puppy raiser and her new pup. The details really
bring the picture alive.

The picture shows two adorable dogs sitting on a floor. The floor has dark gray
tiles and there is a beige rug where the dogs are sitting. On the left, there
is a black Labrador with a shiny coat. It has soulful brown eyes and is wearing
a collar with a tag. On the right, there is a German Shepherd puppy. It has a
black coat with tan markings on its legs and face. The puppy has bright,

I am disturbe dby this description. I don’t want an AI tleling me something is
“adorable” or “ugly” or “horrible” or any subjective description.

Also. “Soulful, curious, etc” are extremely troubling. This is how I want my AI

You wouldn’t have this problem on iOS. You can attempt contacting Google
accessibility but if you have the experience Jonathan Mosen and others who
called his show have had good luck.

I was having a lot of trouble double tapping under iOS 17 until I adjusted the
double tap delay under accessibility from 0.25 to 0.30. Now double tapping is
working as before for me. It may be worth trying.

My question sort of sums it up. I’m thinking about getting a new phone,
although I could wait one more year, since this one is eligible for an upgrade
this year. If I do get a new phone, I am contemplating whether it’s worth it to
go for the pro because of lied AR. There was a lot of hype around it when it
came out, and I haven’t heard much cents. What does it do for us in particular
as blind people? I could care less about taking pictures except for the
purposes of getting descriptions, texts, etc. In other words, regular
photography interests me not one wit.

something that be my eyes may not have control of. I think letting them know

Hi,
I’ve had very good luck with Being Eyes AI; it gives me great descriptions of
what the camera is seeing, but I’m somewhat mystified, as I am having problems
copying the descriptions to the clipboard so that I can put them into Notes or,
as you did, copy and paste them into an e-mail. Can you give me the exact
step-by-step directions on how to copy the descriptions? Be My Eyes should add
a way to add that to the Share Sheet.

What model of iPhone are you using? Do you have LiDAR, and if so do you think
it helped? I haven’t really been paying any attention to this AI InVision

I have been googling to see if this was possible. The impression I have is that
it was possible at one time, way back in iOS 10 maybe. But it isn’t now. That
has certainly been my experience, as I have really wanted to set the input
language to Russian on my phone but leave it in English everywhere else. I have
a good reason for that, but it’s apparently not possible, unless I’m missing
something. I would really like to make this happen. I It helps when you’re
working with native Russiannative Russian speakers and your spoken Russian
isn’t what it used to be.

There are several features that might be of interest of VoiceOver users.

You can set sentence pause and pitch for each voice.

There is the option to read aloud the web page from Safari.

One popular accessibility app is crashing on start, but people don't like when
I mention it so you will have to hear which one it is from someone else. But as
far as I remember it was crashing on each beta thus far so nothing unexpected,
just it might be important if you want to use it as the daily driver. I haven't
seen any other app to crash thus far.

Certainly you can't expect beta to be bug free and it may get worse on your
device, but this beta is fairly close to being daily driver unlike for example
iOS 16 early betas. This is very close to the iOS 16 launch quality level
(which was very bad for the official version).

with most of the betas the battery life is poor.

One thing you have to remember is that if you put iOS 17 public beta or any
early public beta on your primary phone that you have to be willing to expect
problems. This could be small stuff, but it could also mean that certain apps
you use crash and are unusable until the developer updates them or something in
iOS 17 is changed. It May mean more battery drain and this is certainly
something I have read about in connection with iOS 17.

Another issue some people seem to experience is that the Messages app is very
sluggish.

Also, ifyou do go ahead you should be willing and able to send feedback to
Apple when you run into an issue so they can look into it and if you feel it
concerns a particular app you should also contact the developer of the app to
let them know.

One thing I heard about for Voiceover users is that drag and drop currently
does not work; this seems to have been fine in the first developer betas and
may possibly have only been introduced in this first public beta release
although once again, it may not be an issue for all users.

Hi all,

I read an article by Kim Komando about the public beta being out now. She
obviously didn't talk about any accessibility aspects of 17. I am just
wondering if 17 is worth the upgrade or not for VO users. I haven't used betas
in IOS before but was kind of toying with the idea this go round.

Have any of you tried it yet? Is there anything in 17 worth our serious
consideration?

Thanks.

RE: accessible air fryer

2023-07-14 Thread realman02 via VIPhone
I have an air fryer that is totally inaccessible and required extensive
labeling. Once I labeled the flat top panel with dots and Braille labels, it
works great.

Can you use it without the app? I have a friend who has no A-lady who has some
vision. Does the fryer have a touch screen or knobs/buttons?

Thank you.

Hi, is there air fryers that are accessible that allow you to use an app to
control them? Has anyone done a demo on them? Yes I would want it accessible

I haven’t gotten the message yet, but I expect to. Last week sometime I saw an
article in one of the tech publications talking about how T-Mobile was going to
do this. Given the number of security issues that they have had, I personally
do not intend to give them my bank account number. It’s almost enough to make
me switch carriers. But I’ll keep it. It’s going to be a pain paying each month
instead of having it automatically dealt with. But there’s no way I’m giving
them my checking account number. If somebody gets in there, you have no
guarantees at all. If something happens on a credit card You’re covered. And if
you have an Apple Card, they don’t get any information that’s useful anyway. I
don’t care about the five dollar discount. I care more about the inconvenience
of having to get online to pay it every month. Plus it’s bad faith. T-Mobile
has just had too many security issues.

Try the Logitech k811. You can use it with multiple devices; the internal
battery lasts a long time -- you recharge it with USB and you don't need to
physically connect it to the Ipad.

hi,

take a look at the Zag Folio keyboard case. it is great, with the iPad
orientated like a computer screen, at the top, and keyboard at the bottom. the
battery last for about three months, and it charged via micro USB. to charge
the case, the keyboard must be removed, but that is a sympol and
straightforward process.

Since the latest update of the iPhone, I can no longer jump from chapter to

What setting do you set to have books automatically deleted form your phone
when you delete?

I agree. Audible might be a tiny bit slower at opening, but it works fine for
me. I've got my audible app set, to once I finish reading an audible book on
my phone, to automatically delete itself from my phone. It works great. I'm
currently reading Dreamcatcher by Stephen King.

Hi John,

Audible seems to be working pretty much the same as before on my 2020 SE. Maybe
it’s loading a bit more slowly, but not too much. I did notice that when I had
it set to only show items on my device and then deleted something, I had to
reload the app to get the deleted item to disappear from the Library screen.
I’m pretty sure that in the past, deleted items disappeared immediately.

Best,
Anna
