Ok. Go to the search tab. Go to the search field and type in
the podcast you’re looking for. Then find the search result. There should be a
subscribe button. Do you have the latest version of Downcast?

I'm glad it's working. YOu don't have to move your finger up one edge. Just
start anywhere at the very bottom. You'll hear a pop sound. Then slide your

your finger.

It does if it automatically sets brightness to 0%. This way you can turn auto
brightness on and then turn the screen curtain on. Your brightness will be at
0% despite the auto brightness and if you want a sighted person to look at the
phone all you have to do is turn screen curtain off and the phone will revert
to whatever auto brightness setting is appropriate.

If you turn auto brightness of and manually set brightness to 0% then you have
to go into Settings > Display and Brightness and turn it up which involves a
lot more steps than a 3-finger triple tap.

That's probably because only blind persons would want to turn brightness very

Ed,

Turning auto brightness on and off was moved into Accessibility Settings
although I don’t for the life of me know why Apple did this, according to my
logic it is much more appropriate under Display and Brightness in the main
Settings where it used to be.

Anyhow, open Accessibility Settings, you are looking for “Display
Accommodations”, it’s the fourth item from the top after Voiceover, Zoom and
Magnifier.

As for brightness dropping to 0% when auto brightness is enabled and screen
curtain is on this does seem to be the case although when I first tried this it
didn’t seem to be so. When I first toggled screen curtain on and checked it
still read the same value as before, but once I locked my phone and then
unlocked it it was reading as 0% so it seems that if you turn on screen curtain
the phone first has to lock and then as long as you keep screen curtain on when
you unlock it the screen brightness is indeed at 0%.

Regards,

Sieghard

turn auto brightness off and then manually set your brightness to 0% or 5% if
you want just a bit of backlighting.

Also, just as a little tip which I think many of us forget, when you can’t find
a particular setting but pretty much know a word from it’s title, just try the
search field at the top of the main settings screen.

If you type either “auto” or “brightness” or even “bright” the setting for
adjusting auto brightness shows up in the list of matches. It even reads the
settings group where you find that setting.

Now, here is an interesting item: Auto Brightness exists twice, once in General
> Accessibility > Magnifier and also General > Accessibility > Display
Accommodation. If you tap on the item in the search results it does take you to
the Accessibility Settings, but interestingly enough not straight into Display
Accommodations.

When I checked Magnifier the setting for Auto Brightness there was turned off
on my phone although it’s turned on in Display Accommodations. I assume maybe
Apple moved it to Accessibility since you can control it separately for when
you use the phone normally and when you turn on magnifier?

Regards,

Sieghard

an iPhone X. I will say that the gestures are easy to learn if you are willing
to learn them. First to unlock and to go home you swipe up from the bottom edge
of the screen until you feel the first vibration. You will hear clicking
sounds. You will want the first click to go home. To go to the app switcher
swipe up from the bottom until you feel the second vibration. Instead of triple
clicking the home button you triple click the side button which was previously
known as the sleep/wake button. A face ID tip: when setting up Face ID you want
to hold the phone at about arms length away from your face.

Hi, I received an iPhone X for Christmas and am loving it. As
Aleeha said the gestures are very easy to learn. I did however get to practice
the gestures before Christmas but didn’t get them very well until I got to
spend more time using it.

For
the blind, the big differences are that the x has face ID and no
home button
on the screen. Both have the same processor so performance
will be the same
in each phone. The reason technology journalists say
that the 8 is a
disappointment is because the 8 was an incremental
upgrade with no new
technology. The x has a new camera system and a
bigger screen with greater
image quality. Face recognition is way more
accurate than in Samsung phones.
I don’t believe the X is worth the
price for blind users
though.

Re: iPhone 'chaiOS' bug can freeze your phone with a single link, The Verge

iPhone 'chaiOS' bug can freeze your phone with a single link
You don't even have to click the link
By James VincentJan 18, 2018, 5:50am EST

A bug has been discovered in iOS that crashes the Messages app and can
freeze or restart your phone when you're sent a specially-engineered website
link.

The bug was discovered by software developer Abraham Masri, who gave it the
catchy - if slightly alarmist - name of "chaiOS." It exploits the fact that
Messages preloads any links to webpages so it can show users a preview of
the page. Speaking to BuzzFeed News, Masri explains that he created a
webpage hosted on GitHub and stuffed its metadata with hundreds of thousands
of unnecessary characters. Masri suggests that Messages crashes when trying
to load all of this unexpected information, sometimes taking the entire
operating system down with it.

thanks to @aaronp613 @garnerlogan65 @lepidusdev @brensalsa for testing!

Abraham Masri (@cheesecakeufo) 3:00 PM - Jan 16, 2018
Judging by user reports, the bug doesn't work consistently. Sometimes it
crashes Messages, sometimes it causes lag, sometimes it freezes the device,
and sometimes it triggers what's known as a "respring" (when iOS reboots the
software called SpringBoard and kicks the user back to the lock screen).
Masri tested chaiOS successfully on the iPhone X and iPhone 5S, and says it
only affects versions of iOS from 10.0 to 11.2.5 beta 5. The bug can also
crash Messages on macOS.

Thankfully, finding working copies of a buggy chaiOS link isn't easy. Masri
initially hosted the bug on GitHub, but this link, along with a number of
other mirrors uploaded by third-parties, has now been taken down by the
site. Masri himself says he isn't going to re-upload the bug, saying he only
released it "to get Apple's attention."
No, I'm not going to re-upload it. I made my point. Apple needs to take such
bugs more seriously.

Abraham Masri (@cheesecakeufo) 10:17 AM - Jan 17, 2018
If someone has sent you a copy of the bug and it's currently stopping you
from using Messages on your iPhone, there are a couple of fixes you can try:

. Block the domain of site hosting it. So, if the link is coming from
GitHub, for example, go to your Safari settings, then General > Restrictions
> Enable Restrictions > Websites > Limit Adult Content > Never Allow >
GitHub.io.

. Delete the thread the link was sent in. We've seen mixed reports
about whether this method works - it depends if you can quickly delete the
thing before the app crashes.

. Reset your iPhone to factory settings. This is an extreme measure as
it'll delete all your files, photos, etc. Don't do this unless you've backed
up your phone, and even then, it's probably better to just...

. Wait for a patch. We expect Apple will be sending one out soon
enough, although the company didn't respond to our request for comment, or
give any additional details on what it's doing to fix chaiOS.

This isn't a new breed of bug for the iPhone. Similar strings of text or
dodgy web links have caused shutdowns in iOS in both 2015 and 2016. And at
this point chaiOS is more of an annoyance than anything else.
Still, considering the end of last year was a particularly bad time for
Apple's software, we hope the company is more alert and responsive in 2018.
