How interesting.  I never had this problem when continuously reading in 
iBooks.  I guess you could turn auto lock off in settings/general.

If I remember right, there is a hole sweet of Apple apps you can download 
and install.  iBooks is a part of that sweet along with others.  I think I 
just typed into the search box apple apps or perhaps it was just apple.

I find that teaching basic gestures, regardless of the usage of lack 
there of a keyboard, are part of the building blocks of becoming a good 
Voice Over user. This is like the analogy of teaching a man how to fish.
