Re: Amazon Kindle books and best way to read
I never could understand the fascination with that absolutely dreadful Alex voice; if I had a reader who gasped and breathed in that fashion, I'd take them to a service station and even pay for the required air. The original IPhone voice does perfectly fine when using Kindle, and with no gasping or silly panting, YIKES! The Bible from YouVersion [was "RE: Amazon Kindle books"]
Thanks for the tip on the Bible from YouVersion. It’s easy to navigate and accessible with VoiceOver. Some Bibles also have an audio option. -- Christopher (AKA CJ) Chaltain at Gmail From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Michael Feir Sent: Friday, June 26, 2020 6:00 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Amazon Kindle books You can use the VoiceOver rotor to easily move by word, character and line. Touch on the page to get near where you want to be and then turn the rotor to the unit of movement. Then, simply flick up and down to move backward and forward through the page. I wrote all about that in my guide. There are books which VoiceOver can't support because they're too image intensive. I suspect they may be scanned images of pages. Apple Books have some similar issues with some books. However, in both cases, books available are overwelmingly accessible and easy to read provided you know the basics of VoiceOver including the rotor and how it works. As to the bible, I think you're much better served getting a separate bible app. I prefer the Word of Promise bible app. It combines a fully dramatized version of the New King James bible with a splendidly accessible text copy which is easy to use and jump around in quickly. The last time I checked, the Youversion bible app was also very accessible offerring a wide range of bibles. I have a vague memory of stumbling on another accessible bible app which might have been called the Master Touch Bible or Audio Bible. It was supposed to be especially accessible as well. Voice choice gets into very subjective territory. I happen to like Alex and think he's well worth is bulky size. However, I also like the female US and British Siri voices, the Irish male Siri voice, the older Australian Peter and Karen enhanced voices. All of these can be put in the proper language slots in the rotor. I look forward to iOS14 since this should let more Siri voices make use of the artificial intelligence on your device to generate themselves on the fly. These will speak longer sentences more naturally. Presumably, VoiceOver would be able to make use of these rather than the copies currently available. That should save a bunch of storage space and perhaps even make me consider ditching Alex after years of faithful if artificially breathy service. On Fri, Jun 26, 2020 at 6:32 PM mailto:chalt...@gmail.com> > wrote: I must be missing something, but I can use the roter and VoiceOver to navigate around a page by character, word and line. David Andrews has a question mark at the end of the statement, so I don't know if he stating that Kindle has never been good at navigation or if he's asking a question about it. The ability to navigate around a book is also dependent on the book itself and this may not have anything to do with accessibility and the screen reader you're using. I was looking for a good bible to read with the Kindle app, and a lot of the reviews complained about the navigation of the various options, and in checking out the different samples, I could see exactly what the reviewer was talking about. -- Christopher (AKA CJ) Chaltain at Gmail > -Original Message- > From: viphone@googlegroups.com <mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com> > mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com> > On Behalf > Of doug parisian > Sent: Friday, June 26, 2020 4:20 PM > To: viphone@googlegroups.com <mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com> > Subject: Re: Amazon Kindle books > > I strongly agree with David Andrews assessment of the IOS Kindle App. Unlike > my > windows version, there seems no way to move through smaller units than a > page, like lines, words, and characters. RE: Amazon Kindle books
I must be missing something, but I can use the roter and VoiceOver to navigate around a page by character, word and line. -- Christopher (AKA CJ) Chaltain at Gmail > -Original Message- > From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf > Of doug parisian > Sent: Friday, June 26, 2020 4:20 PM > To: viphone@googlegroups.com > Subject: Re: Amazon Kindle books > > I strongly agree with David Andrews assessment of the IOS Kindle App. Unlike > my > windows version, there seems no way to move through smaller units than a > page, like lines, words, and characters. Some people like the Alex voice. If he wouldn't do that stupid breathing crap which sounds like he's trying to be Darth Vader or something, he might be okay. I don't like that voice. Re: Amazon Kindle books
Hi, I’m not sure about JAWS since I no longer use a PC. Kindle will be easy with practice. To continuously read, use a 2-finger swipe down. what drives me nuts with Kindle is that your screen is always unlocked, so you can’t have your phone in a pocket. You have to be careful not to touch it. The other way you can read Kindle books is with Alexa if you have one. She will read from wherever you stopped on any device. Re: Amazon Kindle books
There is excellent navigation using the Kindle app for iPHONE or iPAD. You can swipe with three fingers to move through pages. Alternatively, you can double tap on the book and gain access to the menu. Go into the navigation drawer and you'll find the table of contents which you can flick left and right through. Double tap on the chapter you want. It doesn't get much easier than that given the basic objective of giving all of the screen to the book you're reading. Kingle offers other advantages which many fail to discover. These include the x-ray view which can act as a kind of interactive Cliff's notes for a book. You can look up information about characters, terms and concepts in a book. Also, there's the built in dictionary making it easy to look up definitions while reading without needing to leave the app. Hope this is helpful to people. RE: Amazon Kindle books
For simple reading, I find the iPhone app to be pretty good provided that you use one of the quality voice that Apple offers. Pretty much the same with Kindle PC. On my phone, I'm using the Alex voice and have the speed at 58 words a minute and it's almost as good as Audible. Hope this helps. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of David Andrews Sent: Friday, June 26, 2020 12:14 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com; portillo@gmail.com Subject: Re: Amazon Kindle books What format are they in? HarperCollins Publishers 99 cent sale of Amazon Kindle Books
Just thought I'd post that Harper Collins has a number of Kindle books on sale for 99 cents. I know that some of you like cookbooks, which don't come up on BookShare. Here are a few listings, all of which get over 4-star ratings and have paperback and hardcover prices that are much more expensive: • Pizza, Focaccia, Flat and Filled Breads For Your Bread Machine: Perfect Every Time by Lora Brody http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005T5O9UI/ • Chef Paul Prudhomme's Seasoned America by Paul Prudhomme http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007BC2WRY/ • Chef Paul Prudhomme's Louisiana Tastes: Exciting Flavors from the State that Cooks by Paul Prudhomme http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007BC2WFQ/ • Fiery Foods That I Love by Paul Prudhomme http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007BC2ZWG/ • Celebrate with Chocolate: Totally Over-the-Top Recipes by Marcel Desaulniers http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005AJSVDE/ • Death by Chocolate Cakes: An Astonishing Array of Chocolate Enchantments by Marcel Desaulniers http://www.amazon.com/Death-Chocolate-Cakes-Enchantments-ebook/dp/B005AJWTK0/ • The Shun Lee Cookbook by Michael Tong http://www.amazon.com/The-Shun-Lee-Cookbook-ebook/dp/B003V1WTOA/ Here's a link to some more 99 cent Harper Collins sale items of various genres, but it's not complete, and you'll have to wade through the items: http://amzn.to/196RUwC This is also a quick check that my posts are still getting through to the list, since I've had to read this list on the web site for the past week.
