Re: BARD app coming

2013-03-24 Thread Chuck Dean
Hi all,
In anticipation of the upcoming BARD app, I wanted to test the
website
to see if it was navigable on my iPhone's small screen.
I am pleased to report that I could browse, search and add books to my
wish list successfully.
I also read the Talking Book Topics on the website from my iPhone.

Chuck
PS. Once I opened the BARD homepage in Safari, I double tapped the
utilities button and added it to the home screen.

 Hi,
It is my understanding from listening to the referenced podcast that books
can be downloaded directly to your mobile device from the recently added
content sections of the bard site as well as from your wish list.  So as the
explanation indicated you’d either add a book to your wish list from your
computer and then could download it seamlessly to your device from within the
app or you could access the recently added section of the bard site from
within the mobile app itself and download from there.
That is my understanding of how the process would work as they are trying to
avoid the use of iTunes entirely.  I hope I’ve stated this correctly and
 haven’t muddied the waters further.

RE: BARD app coming

2013-02-28 Thread Alan Lemly
Tom, since the iDevices don't have external storage capability, I imagine
users will have to manage the available storage built into their device. A
BARD book takes about 10.4MB per hour of recorded audio so a 10-hour book
takes 104MB of space. If you load up your device with a lot of books, your
space will run out. I suspect the app will work in such a way that letting
the NLS store the books and the users grab them when they need them will be
how most folks will manage this. With more and more things moving to the
cloud, the days of downloading everything to your local PC or to an external
memory device are numbered.

Re: BARD app coming

Well, I read BARD books on my Victor Reader Stream, and do not store all of my
books on the device. I would suspect that you could use iTunes to transfer
surplus books to your PC, or you could use iCloud. You will likely have to pay
a little for the latter.

substantial collection of BARD books. I have students who download a
lot of BARD books and I'm continually amazed at how quickly they can
fill up an 8 or 16-gig SD card. Also, I would expect that you'd need a
good strong wi-fi connection for downloading.

Hi,
It is my understanding from listening to the referenced podcast that books can
be downloaded directly to your mobile device from the recently added content
sections of the bard site as well as from your wish list. So as the
explanation indicated you’d either add a book to your wish list from your
computer and then could download it seamlessly to your device from within the
app or you could access the recently added section of the bard site from within
the mobile app itself and download from there.
That is my understanding of how the process would work as they are trying to

haven’t muddied the waters further.

Hi, Stacey.
It's a podcast, and it's available on iTunes. Info below:

Blind Access Journal

By Darrell and Karen Shandrow

Blind Access Journal is all about the blind and our quest for the greatest
possible access to all the information available in the world around us.
Karen and I chronicle our experiences dealing with a variety of issues as a
blind couple, show how we have dealt with various blindness situations and
seek comments on ways to constructively address the concrete concerns of
accessibility and transportation we face on a daily basis.

RE: BARD app coming

2013-02-28 Thread Cristobal
The one feature I am hoping is included is faster playback than the current
3x speed. 3x is nice, but I still find myself going back to my nls player
for audiobooks just because of the increased rate of available playback
speed.

I wrote the Downcast dev once about this and he said that he'd be willing to
look at offering faster playback options, but that he was limited by Apple
as they only allowed the playback to max out at that rate. So who knows if
even the NLS folks would be able to enhance it on their end.

I guess we'll just have to see.

I doubt anyone can answer that question since the app won't be available

Tom, since the iDevices don't have external storage capability, I imagine
users will have to manage the available storage built into their device. A
BARD book takes about 10.4MB per hour of recorded audio so a 10-hour book
takes 104MB of space. If you load up your device with a lot of books, your
space will run out. I suspect the app will work in such a way that letting
the NLS store the books and the users grab them when they need them will be
how most folks will manage this. With more and more things moving to the
cloud, the days of downloading everything to your local PC or to an external

2013-02-28 Thread Christopher Chaltain
She said that in this current interview as well. She also said that you
could download books from the recent books list as well. This isn't
currently working in the alpha, so I'm assuming they're getting books to
the iPhone via iTunes, and I'm assuming this option will still be
available in the future. Right now, I'm downloading books to my PC and
them copying to my blank NLS cartridge and the memory card I use in my
Booksense. Even if I can download books directly to my iPhone, I can see
where I may still want to download them to my PC so I could use iTunes
and my file manager to copy the books to multiple devices.

The app seems very promising. Direct download from the site, i.e no iTunes,
good control of playback speed, level navigation and more.

Re: BARD app coming

2013-02-27 Thread Tom Lange
Hi,
I'm really curious about how much storage would be required for a substantial
collection of BARD books. I have students who download a lot of BARD books and
I'm continually amazed at how quickly they can fill up an 8 or 16-gig SD card.
Also, I would expect that you'd need a good strong wi-fi connection for
downloading.

Re: BARD app coming

2013-02-27 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Judy Dixon didn't really mention it, but I assume you can still download
books to your PC and then transfer them over to your iPhone to use in
the BARD Mobile app. I know they don't want to depend on iTunes, but I
think they also said that the books they read now with the alpha are
being copied over. I mention this because I just use a 2G blank NLS
cartridge with my DTBM and a 17G card in my booksense, which has about
12G of music on it. I can get about 6 books on my NLS cartridge and
about a dozen on my Booksense. I have more than that on my PC, but I
don't bother keeping every book I've ever downloaded on my PC either. If
I want to reread a book, I can just download it again.

Hi,

NLS books take 11 MB per hour, so that should give you some idea how much space
is required.

Cheers,
Anna
