Re: Braille displays and iOS?

2020-06-01 Thread Greg Wocher
Hello,
The new Orbit 40 that is coming out will have cursor
buttons. The orbits are really good for note taking. Also the new Orbit 40
will have on board translation.

 Hi all,

I am doing some research for a client on the best display to use with her

What models of braille displays are people using with the iPhone?

I have heard good things about the new Focus 5th gen as well as the

 Any insight welcome.

I use the Focus 14 Blue fifth generation. The scratchpad is okay, no word wrap
which I find annoying, but I mainly use it with my iPhone anyway.

Orbit reader sounds good, But from what I gather that display does not

Hi Scott,
I tried hid also but that does not seem to work on the iphone (by that I mean i
tried connecting the brailliant while its protocol was set to openbraille
instead of humanware and the channel to bluetooth).
I dont think the refreshbraille is sold here in the Netherlands but the himms
displays are being sold here nowedays. I did hear though that some himms
displays have a bug where braille input/typing is concerned?
Not that that would be a big issue for me but still… Greetings, Anouk,

RE: what are your experiences with braille displays and ios/bluetooth?

2016-11-05 Thread Todd Patkus
Scott Davert,

I would rather not bother any products from Humanware, for the folks at
Humanware do not do much. I would not bother them but simply stay out.

A friend of mine has a Brailliant. The friend makes similar statements about
the device as you said.

Scott, I do have a Braille Sense Mini U2 which works good with any devices. I
am fine with the U2.

You should better off any contact or any product with Humanware.

Thanks,

Todd

Hi.
Yes, I've also noticed that the Brailliant display line has had various issues
with Bluetooth connectivity over the past few years.
The newer firmware seemed to be a bit better when using the HID mode, but I
haven't honestly used it enough to really say that it's better over a longer
period of time. I find the Resreshabraille and the HIMS products seem to hold
the connection better. The first and second generation of the Refreshabraille
don't seem to hold the connection over a distance of 3 or 4 meters, but the
newer generation, along with the Braille Edge and Braille Sense tend to hold
the connection pretty stable for about 10 meters.

Re: what are your experiences with braille displays and ios/bluetooth?

2016-11-03 Thread Anouk Radix
Hi Scott,
I tried hid also but that does not seem to work on the iphone (by that I mean i
tried connecting the brailliant while its protocol was set to openbraille
instead of humanware and the channel to bluetooth).
I dont think the refreshbraille is sold here in the Netherlands but the himms
displays are being sold here nowedays. I did hear though that some himms
displays have a bug where braille input/typing is concerned?
Not that that would be a big issue for me but still…

Hi, Scott. WHAT is h i d mode and how do you run it with the Brailliant BI 40?

Also I am wondering if phone memory makes a difference. I have 16 GB and the

Re: what are your experiences with braille displays and ios/bluetooth?

2016-11-02 Thread Scott Davert
Hi.
Yes, I've also noticed that the Brailliant display line has had
various issues with Bluetooth connectivity over the past few years.
The newer firmware seemed to be a bit better when using the HID mode,
but I haven't honestly used it enough to really say that it's better
over a longer period of time. I find the Resreshabraille and the HIMS
products seem to hold the connection better. The first and second
generation of the Refreshabraille don't seem to hold the connection
over a distance of 3 or 4 meters, but the newer generation, along with
the Braille Edge and Braille Sense tend to hold the connection pretty
stable for about 10 meters.

its sturdyness its braille cells and its performance through usb with windows

I was wondering what are your experiences regarding braille displays/ios and

the bluetooth performance will be a major deciding factor.
Thanks,

Hello, Anouk. I too have noticed the sluggish bluetooth connection with the
Brailliant BI 40, running IOS 10 on an iPhone 6. I called Humanware about
it, and they told me it's an issue with the operating system, which I doubt.

I got a chance to try a Brailliant BI 32 on an iPhone 7 last night, and
things seemed much more responsive. I am seriously considering getting an
iPhone 7 for myself. I'm just wondering which iPhone you are using your
Brailiant 40 on?

Thanks.

what are your experiences with braille displays and ios/bluetooth?

2016-11-01 Thread Anouk Radix
Hi Everyone,
I am doing a lot more with my iphone these days but want to keep my braille
reading skills in tact. I use voicedream a lot and a lot of the books that I
have in there are epub or text so no problem to read those with a braille
display. Only the one that I have now the humanware brailliant bi40 has a VERY
unstable and slow bluetooth connection. I love it for its form factor its looks
its sturdyness its braille cells and its performance through usb with windows
and mac but its bluetooth performance simply really sucks its slow and VERY
unstable often I am not capable to get the connection back either.
I was wondering what are your experiences regarding braille displays/ios and
bluetooth stability? I will be able to get a new braille display next year and
the bluetooth performance will be a major deciding factor.
Thanks,
Greetings, Anouk,

Re: Braille input and using Braille displays in iOS 8

2014-09-21 Thread christopher hallsworth
Not that I know of. The idea is to type in Braille on the touch screen just
like you could with MBraille and BrailleTouch however you can do this in any
text field. Typing on a Braille display should be the same as it always has
been in previous releases.

Re: Braille input and using Braille displays in iOS 8

2014-09-21 Thread Wayne Merritt
Okay, thanks all for the responses. I was talking about the ability
to, perhaps enter text with a Braille display like the new braille
input mode or handwriting modes for entering text. I don't think that
it would be that difficult since many displays are already supported
and can be used to enter text. In my suggestion to Apple
Accessibility, I mentioned that perhaps a dot 3 and space or dot 6 and
space could be used to switch between numbers, contracted, and
uncontracted braille. Given the new braille input mode I have heard of
in iOS 8, it seems like this could be possible. Oh well, perhaps in a
future update. I think it would be cool if they added it though since
that could mean input by Braille display to even more places in iOS.

Best,
Wayne

Re: Braille input and using Braille displays in iOS 8

2014-09-21 Thread Teresa Cochran
It has been possible to use Braille input on a display since Voiceover was
implemented. This works independently from any screen input mode. The onscreen
Braille input is meant for you to be able to Braille directly onto the
touchscreen. This comes in handy if you don't have a Braille display or if you
don't have it handy.

Re: Braille input and using Braille displays in iOS 8

2014-09-21 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

A reasonably quick way to search for an app and open it is to make sure focus
is anywhere other than the status bar. Then type Space with dots 3-4-5-6. This
opens Spotlight. Type a few characters and press Enter. Press Space with Dot 4
a few times, and you should reach the app you want. Press Return again to open
it.

Best,
Anna

Re: Braille input and using Braille displays in iOS 8

2014-09-20 Thread RobH!
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but input from an external braille keyboard would
send to the iDevice just like a qwerty external keyboard, so cranking round
the rotor to braille would serve no purpose, probably complicate the issue.

The rotor setting is for those who can't or don't have an external braille
keyboard.

Re: Braille input and using Braille displays in iOS 8

2014-09-20 Thread RobH!
Ok, this is much more interesting.

So, anyone with a working external keyboard, a bluetooth one - I know it's
been an issue!
But, if you have a working external keyboard, do as he asks, crank the
rotor round to braille, then tap the first letter of an app that should be
on the screen, and see if it finds anything.

That would be useful, and, if it worked for one, it should work for the
other.

JMO, RobH.

Sorry, I suppose I should have explained more. I was wondering if you
could turn the rodar to braille when on a home screen and use the
braille display to open apps from the home screen? I know you can
braile things from the display in different edit boxes and files.

Greetings all. I have an iPhone 5 with iOS 7. I haven't upgraded yet
and am not sure tha i Iwill until I get a new iPhone 6 next week or
the week after. I have seen people talk about being able to type in
Braille in iOS 8. My question is: can this be done with a Braille
display? In other words, when on iOS 8 can I turn my rodar to braille
and then write in Braille using my Focus 14 Blue display? I sure hope
so since I sent a note to Apple Accessibility about this not long ago
and it would be great if they added that ability.

2014-09-20 Thread Teresa Cochran
I'm confused by your question, because using the onscreen keyboard doesn't have
anything to do with an external device. It's like turning to handwriting mode
and trying to use an external keyboard. I don't think the two modes are
compatible. I did try using a Braille display to enter text while on the home
screen, and it doesn't work, with or without the onscreen mode being activated.

No. If your rotor is set to handwriting, handwriting is all you can do, and
not from an external device. It is done on the touch screen. That would be
like trying to write onto a sheet of paper by using a typewriter across the
room that had no paper in it.

Re: Braille input and using Braille displays in iOS 8

2014-09-19 Thread Flor Lynch

In iOS7 (and before), with your braille display Bluetooth paired and
Voiceover running, you can already write (in braille) with your braille
display's keys, without need of any rotor adjustment beyond the usual
Voiceover things. You can also write with the onscreen keyboard and your

Thanks in advance,

Sorry, I suppose I should have explained more. I was wondering if you
could turn the rodar to braille when on a home screen and use the
braille display to open apps from the home screen? I know you can
braile things from the display in different edit boxes and files.

The setting on the router is to be used when you want to use an onscreen

Perhaps there would need to be a specific 'fraille display' Rotor setting for

Hi All,

Apologies for the blank message I just sent.

Would there be any interest in a list specifically for those using braille
displays with iOS devices?

I've been thinking of starting such a list, but was curious about the level
of interest before I set it up. If you are interested, please contact me at

Thanks,

,Hi Tracy,
I would be interested in a separate list for all things in braille for iOS
devices. I am using BrailleTouch as we communicate about you starting a
different list. Keep us in the loop what your decision is regarding this.

Best,

Hi.

I am the moderator of that group. We got so little traffic, that I am in doubt
about the value to have a braille list. Maybe things has changed, if you like,
I will send the necessary information out. I will have to figure it out,
because googlegroups has been changed after I made the group.
